Dear xda community,
I've rooted all my previous devices before in order to disable bloat, make them faster and to block add's.
The Note 5 (n920c) however is the first device i'm happy with stock.
I've upgraded to MM (UAE stock) and while it is much snappier/faster, android OS keeps draining my battery (Knox = 0)
The things i've tried are: Factory reset, clear cache, don't install any apps, disable bloat but the max SOT is 4h (light use).
So my question is:
Will rooting, installing TWRP and using SkyHigh kernel improve battery life and increase SOT?
Thanks in advance

Rooting definitely is, I was just wondering if installing a custom kernel (SkyHigh) would improve battery life in common.
I would like to try it, if only Knox was reversible

It all depends on you and your level of knowledge on setting things up
Personally rooted has always given me better battery life over not

If you want to disable samsung Bloatware, NO NEED ROOT
Try to use this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.packagedisabler
This app run WITHOUT ROOT permission
It will show all bloatware and you can disable any app, package (installed, bloatware, system) you want :good:

Thanks for the answer, but I've already disabled everything using Package disabler Pro.
I think i will take my chances and just install custom kernel and recovery.
The only downside on doing this, is that the resale value drops massively here in the Netherlands.
yea, i was on the same boat. note 5 is great with no root. but it can feel limited if you've always rooted your previous phones. For best battery life, I would suggest custom roms. That was the best thing for it.
I like my n5 enough to skip upgrade this year. Acutually I’m kinda at a point where upgrading phones is losing its appeal. I’m actually considering using my n5 until it breaks. You know, like anything else I use. Seems like only thing I buy even though it’s not broken, is a phone. And the high of a new phone only last for a short time, then I want another one. Just doesn’t seem right anymore. Getting old maybe. Only thing that worried me about N5 was the non-removable battery, and my previous Samsung phones battery usually performed bad after 1 year, but always could just buy another one and drop it in. BUT I saw a diy video of how to replace the N5 battery. That’s the only reason why I bought my N5. If it was pretty much impossible to replace the battery, I would’ve never bought this phone. So for me after using my N5 until it breaks, the resale value isn’t gonna be that much of a difference whether knox 1 or 0. That’s why I rooted. If you’re gonna upgrade this year to N6 or other phones, then it might be a harder decision. I would buy something else that doesn penalize you forever for rooting. Yea, listing your phone as knox 1 when selling is gonna be much harder, unless you sell it for much cheaper. That was my thought, too.

Hey everyone,
So I don't normally post, I usually just read, but wanted to ask this question/poll to current N6 users. I'm about to get my N6 on Wed (YA! ) and wanted to know, should I run decryption as soon as I get my device or give it some time (month or so) to wait for an update?
Battery life and performance are concerns for me and I know the device has the hardware to make it happen.
Thanks for any response.
Might as well decrypt as soon as you get it. No point in waiting, as it will only increase battery life and performance.

Unlock boot, decrypt, root, install greenify.
I managed 7hrs 8 minutes sot yesterday. Up from 3.5 my second cycle before doing the above mentioned. Helps immensely.
Noticeable responsiveness improvement and remarkably better battery.

Will doing any of that prevent OTA updates from Google?

Short answer: probably. But that's the only way to drop the encryption for the time being.

Root will. OTAs that overwrite boot.img will re-encrypt. At least that is the theory, as it hasn't happened yet.
It would be really good to hear from Google as to whether or not they are working on addressing this issue. I read many of the popular tech sites but haven't even seen one mention that they reached out to Google for comment on this. I'm going to give this a week or two to see if we get a response from Google or not. Even with encryption, battery is getting me through a day and performance is much faster than I'm used to. Still loving the experience, but the tech nerd in me is bothered by the fact that it can be even better without encryption.
I would also be curious to see if any of the tech sites that do a battery rundown test have redone the test with encryption off. It would be good to see some real metrics that measure the effect it has on battery.
If you wait it will require a complete factory reset of your data. That should help you decide.
I don't think reviewers are saying anything because it isn't an issue in every day use. I tried the phone both ways and couldn't tell a difference in how the phone felt. Only benchmarks really showed any difference. I don't think reviewers care much about benchmarks other than to run a few for the nerds among us.
So you didn't notice apps loading any faster? Particularly games or apps with a large footprint? To be honest, I want it for the battery life more than anything. If encryption is really being processed in the CPU, that is very inefficient and all those extra CPU cycles are wasting battery.
I noticed improvement in performance. Not a lot as the device is already lightning fast. I'd imagine the more user data there is to decrypt/encrypt the more noticeable the performance would be. But yes battery life seems to have improved immensely.
Thanks everyone for voting!
Just got my N6 (WHOA...this thing is a change from the N5) and Im going to go with decryption. Unlocking as I type... :highfive:

do you have something else except for greenify for battery increase? for greenify don't you have to install xposed which is not compatible(or fully) with lollipop(uses art) ?thanks

Xposed has an alpha that works on Lollipop, and I think there is a beta version of Greenify that has more features and works with the Lollipop version (the old one may work too).
Amplify is another one I have seen a few people mention in efforts to get better battery life.

So i haven't rooted my phone or roamed in a while now. The last time i did was with the nexus 4 in the early days i put franco's kernel on it for better battery life and downloaded a few root apps. Now i have a nexus 6 i love it so far. I was wondering if there is anything worth rooting as of now?
The reasons are the same as they were before. I don't understand why people think it changes, we root because we're on XDA and we want to maximize the potential of the device we've purchased. As usual the reasons for rooting are,
- Apps requiring root (adblock, titanium backup, greenify, kernel tweaking app, etc)
- Custom ROMs / Kernels to maximize features, battery life, etc.
- Decrypt the phone to increase I/O speeds
... etc.
I really only rooted to have RGB control of the screen (get rid of the yellow tint). I used Elemental's kernel on here and I'm so glad I did, the difference is extraordinary.
I don't think I will root untill someone comes out with a multi-window mod. Kinda upset google didn't have this built in stock at this point. Would make my nexus 9 a lot better too.
Hey all,
Last flashed on FireKat months ago and have been wanting to try out Lollipop but wasn't sure if it was ready yet. When I first used FireNote, mega was remarking that it would be a few months before KK was stable enough for everyday use.
Have you guys had good luck with custom Lollipop ROMs? Which ones are the "best" ones you'd recommend?
Sorta/not really. It's like smooth sailing except when you hit the new barrier reef. But it's pretty!
Latest problem is Viper4android can't possibly work until someone figures out how to enable SELinux Permissive mode. Then like something makes a noise or vibrates in a way you might have tamed with Xposed before. But there's no Xposed either. How do you fix it? You don't. I might just go back. Sucks either way for now.

How's battery life? Right now on firekat I'm losing 35% per hour during use and 3-5% per hour when the screen is off. Can't be worse than this.
Lack of viper and xposed aren't really deal breakers for me. Inconvenient, yes, but still usable.
Root WiFi hotspot still works I assume?

Yeah i figured that battery life was abnormal. Not sure how to troubleshoot it, though. When I go to look at battery stats (using GSam) to troubleshoot, it just shows that most of the battery is consumed by "Android System," followed closely by "Kernel (Android OS)." Battery life was pretty good when I first installed FK, but has gone down considerably since first install.
Any idea on how to further troubleshoot?

Not knowing how you flashed it. always odin back to nc2 then install ss and tr, Flash the rom. Never use battery saver. When using greenify make sure its uncheck in exposed. Don't forget to make a fresh backup of nc2 before flashing fk. But the new build v19n3 and v19n4 is running awesome. Great battery life. One thing I do is in tb is to change Google play services from system app to user app. Hope this helps. If you try this rom again and have problems jump over to the fk thread since this thread is Q&A on LP.

Yeah I installed FK according to all the instructions and it was fine at first. Battery life degraded over time, though. To give you an idea how long ago I installed FK, I have version 4 installed.
What I'm wondering is if i should install the newest FK or jump over to lollipop. Anyone have any experience with both? Curious to see all the new lollipop features and battery life can hardly get WORSE compared to what I have now.

Well I tried LP on a older Nexus 4 that I just tinker with I didn't like it. I put slimkat back on it. But the new fk builds is great. I'm not switching to LP unless Mega does a LP build for us. Like I said if you try the new builds just jump over on the threads if you have problems.
It looks like allianceROM is one of the more popular Lollipop ROMs. Anyone have any opinions on it vs firekat?
I think lollipop roms are awesome, very smooth. I did have better battery life with 4.3 then anyother
Hi,
i am very curious. I've just ordered this watch for an alltime low price on a local store in germany and will have the unit tomorrow or friday.
I am quite experienced with custom roms, rooting and modding several smartphones but having a look in this forum especially the rom development section, there's really nothing much to see there except one or two kernels.
So what's the benefit, are there any apps which requires me to have the watch rooted or is there any thing i am missing out there?
What do you think?
Cheers.

When I first got mine a couple of months ago, I rooted and installed the custom kernel pretty much automatically because I always root and mod my phones and I assumed that I would want total control over the system on the watch, too. It went fine, and it was fun to learn about Wear. The kernel definitely improved battery life substantially. With respect to UX modifications, there isn't much that requires root beyond uninstalling bloatwear, which, for me, was just two or three apps.
A couple of weeks ago, I was getting freeze-ups and factory reset with the intention of re-rooting. I got interrupted and figured I would do it when I had time. Well, I have been on stock since, and am pretty happy. I just change watch faces frequently which of course doesn't require root. The crashes have ceased. The battery is not as good as it was on the custom kernel, but it's more than adequate for my use case.
I'll probably get back into hacking it when I have some free time.

i have already received the watched and did the setup procedure a few times by now. i unlocked, flashed twrp and rooted ( didn't confirm root so far ) after i upgraded to 6.0.1 ... i'll see how it runs for now before flashing any other kernel or whatever to check out the current performance.
I've been very happy with MM on my N6 and still get great battery life and performance. I'm comfortable with ROMs/mods and my phone is pretty much where I want it in terms of functionality and UI. After months of debate, I'm still unsure if it's worth moving to Nougat (and not impressed with O preview either). I'm so unconvinced that I don't even feel like investing the time in testing 7.x particularly after reading posts of battery or compatibility issues. I'm not trying to be "stuck in the past" but just don't see a convincing reason to update.
The last dedicated thread I saw on MM vs N was from Oct 2016, any new opinions since then?
I'm thinking about moving back to MM because of the terrible battery life and performance on nougat.
In the same boat. MM seems to give me better battery life but Nougat seems a little bit more snappier.
I've only been on 7.0 for a couple of weeks, but no complaints.

Hey... Flashed Pure Nexus with EX Kernel as soon as its nougat iteration appeared and never looked back. Well I can't really compare about battery life as my phone is now 2 years old. Still it performs very well, nothing to complain about. Screen on time is the same and standby is better on Android 7 i think. Of course stock firmware is not as polished as it should, but custom ROMs are here to change that. I don't need that much mods on my phone anymore except theme, ad blocker, theme ready apps and maybe a few other things.
What kind of incompatibility issues are you talking about?
Well, I understand you don't want to waist your time , but it's just a matter of backup/flash/test. You won't loose anything and if you don't like it, you can always revert back to MM anyway. I think a weekend is more than enough to decide if it's worth it for you or not.
I usually prefer testing things myself and not based on people statements. Because everyone has his tastes and they unlikely match mines...
Cheers...
I'm on 7.1.1 stock with Franco Kernel, encryption disabled and F2FS filesystem.
No problems with stability, lags or battery life. In fact, I usually get around 5h+ of screen on time, which is pretty good for a 2 years old phone.
Usually, battery life and stability are user fault. Of course we can't say everything is related to users... But if you configure correctly your apps permissions, don't install anything out of the play store and don't do things like undervolting... You should be good to go.
Regards,
Rafael

I'd have to go back and look at the threads I've read, the only thing I recall being a deal-killer was not being able to use net.tethering under Nougat (is that still an issue)? I've been very happy with Pure (MM) with Franco on my other devices but have kept stock on my N6. I agree with testing it out myself, just need to find some time, but generally trust opinions on XDA.
Phone has been solid for years and rooted with Nova, adaway, lightflow, multiwindow, and tethering has met my needs. Maybe I'm just being lazy or in a rut but definitely would like something more revolutionary to encourage the upgrade.
Thanks for the input everyone, gives me a lot to think about.

Sadly I can't really help you with net.tethering as I don't use it...
Just make a search in Q/A or open a thread if nothing shows up. I'm sure you'll get an answer... :good:
Good luck...
Couple of days with stock 7.1.1 and so far it's fine, nothing that made me thrilled with the update but nothing that makes me want to roll back. Can't say it's snappier than MM or has better battery life, though. Enabled tethering using the usual net.tethering entry as well as 'settings put global tether_dun_required 0' so nothing lost there. Guess if this is the last, full-point update for my beloved N6 I can live with it (until I find an annoyance I can't stand and flash Pure or something else).
Thanks again for everyone's input!
Bought my N6 used back in September. I still have official 7.0 My device has never stuttered or slowed down (outside of extremely low battery and high CPU apps). I have a lot of apps installed, I use it hard, and run some demanding apps (like raw photo conversion) on occasion. And I just clocked 3+ days of battery use with nearly 7 hours of SOT under a variety of uses. I can't imagine not using N on this device.

Its all about standby battery life when using a bt device like an android watch. Not going to get into arguements here but have tested and 7.0 doesnt have the bad drain on my unit and 711 absolutely does. Thus cannot be an old battery if the only change i made was OS version and drastic difference in battery drain. 711 has about 2x+ the standby drain with bt on. 7.0 and 6.0 have much better drain
