So i haven't rooted my phone or roamed in a while now. The last time i did was with the nexus 4 in the early days i put franco's kernel on it for better battery life and downloaded a few root apps. Now i have a nexus 6 i love it so far. I was wondering if there is anything worth rooting as of now?
The reasons are the same as they were before. I don't understand why people think it changes, we root because we're on XDA and we want to maximize the potential of the device we've purchased. As usual the reasons for rooting are,
- Apps requiring root (adblock, titanium backup, greenify, kernel tweaking app, etc)
- Custom ROMs / Kernels to maximize features, battery life, etc.
- Decrypt the phone to increase I/O speeds
... etc.
I really only rooted to have RGB control of the screen (get rid of the yellow tint). I used Elemental's kernel on here and I'm so glad I did, the difference is extraordinary.
I don't think I will root untill someone comes out with a multi-window mod. Kinda upset google didn't have this built in stock at this point. Would make my nexus 9 a lot better too.

so i never wanted to root until i tasted what the stock froyo can do.
and it's been over a month or so and i am wondering if i should root or not.
mainly came to xda-developers for firmware updates and just some general information about phones never really read into about rooting and whatnots.
i really want a smooth experience with android and while 2.2 is indeed faster than 2.1, i'm still not quite satisfied.
so i'm wondering if rooting will boost speed performances. like smoother scroll, opening apps faster and hopefully a better music player. the custom themes are nice but performance and functionality is my thing and priority.
or should i be waiting for 3.0?
In all honesty root your nexus. I had mine since February and only rooted my nexus two weeks ago.
I had the same doubts of what would rooting give me over eclair and then froyo but after rooting and putting on a custom rom i am kicking myself for not doing it sooner.
My phone is rooted with a locked bootloader so i don't have to worry about that unlock padlock when powering up my phone. I get too use rooted apps and best of all the different roms. I was going to wait for google with each update new features being added, but it takes too long. With the custom roms they have features that should have been in the stock release like waking up the phone with the trackball and other trackball colors beside white, different customizations to your liking and speed increases.
Today it is even easier to root your nexus one then when it first came out. Since putting a new rom on my phone it feels like i have a new phone all over again without the cost and contract obligations.
Give it a try and see if you like it if not you can always unroot and go back to the stock rom. But keep in mind before you root and start tinkering with your phone read up as much as you can beforehand so you are sure you know what you are doing.
Best of luck.

Hello Everyone. I am a long time Android User, new to rooting.
Before I get too deep in this I had a general question....
I have a Droid 3 that I am finding to be slow compared to my stock Google Nexus One. I really enjoy the qwerty keyboard and don't want to go back to my Nexus, However the lag in the contacts autofill indexing and email autofill indexing is Killing Me.
I run my email, calendar, and contacts etc through the gmail/ google apps platform and REALLY want to get the speed I had with my Nexus One on my Droid3.
What would you recommend?
How can I speed this thing up and still have a very reliable phone?
I also need to be able to use the following features (which work now):
wifi hotspot
tethering
hdmi out
bluetooth
calendar
Thank you so much for any insight you can provide. I am really impressed with the knowledge base on this forum.
Much Appreciated.
I am by no means an expert in Android devices but can definitely tell you that the 'slow down' you are experiencing is due largely in part to the poor ROM/Skin that is built onto the phone by Motorola and Verizon.
I would recommend rooting and trying out one of the custom ROM's in the Android Development section.
I have an XT860 so there are no ROMs really available at this point but from my experience with my HTC Desire Z, there was a night and day difference in speed and usability of the phone after I rooted it and began using custom ROMS.
For the Droid 3, 'Steel Droid' seems to be a very popular ROM, but again I don't have any direct experience with it because its not compatible with the XT860 (Canadian GSM variant of the D3)
Hope that helped a bit...
i use steal droid its great. renaming your bloat to .bak will speed up your d3. if you do use steel droid just flash dlna back.
I am reasonably intelligent person, confident with technology, but am finding it difficult to make sense of many of the posts because of the jargon.
Is there a cliff notes version on how to do this?
I rooted my phone with the 1 click root.
I have also installed Droid3 Bootstrapper (but I dont know what it does?)
I believe this helps me build a backup in case the ROM fails?
Where do I go from here?
Thank you!
its also for flashing roms in the form of .zips
Check out this thread in the development section, it is for Steel Droid specifically but in the first post, just after the changelog, he gives pretty good instructions on how to flash the ROM.

Be like me my friend. Just start searching around the xda forums, on google, rootzwiki, etc. Start absorbing information. I started with a normal Droid 3, and within 3 or 4 days, I found out just about everything I needed to know. You are correct about bootstrap, and it also allows you to install system files, theme files, kernel files, etc.
I would recommend Liberty. It's mostly AOSP (Android Open Source Project) which means it's not bogged down by Motocrap. It flies, you can still have some blur elements and I have not experienced a single bug.
U need to root, install custom recovery, then I recommend installing a stock android rom from the android development section. Also try SetCPU to raise your processing power. But as said, the speed is mosly do to bloatware. You can also remove these without installing a rom, using root unistaller( must find of internet). Must be rooted though.
Please thank me if I helped.
Just my 2 cents, contrary to others I won't necessarily recommend flashing a CUSTOM Rom. But definitely update to the 5.6.890 to see an increase in battery life and performance, and root your phone so you can debloat.
I have seen no real improvement between custom ROMs besides the themes and user experience. however if you are satisfied with how your phone is running and have required apps you need to work, i'd just debloat the stock ROM yourself. it will be a lot faster with the bloatware frozen using an app like titanium backup. a lot of the custom ROMs end up having bugs, especially Liberty seemed to be causing trouble for some folks before the update. but basically all the speed improvements people are seeing is from the apps removed from running in the background that you don't need, so do that and youre good to go.

What settings have you done in SetCPU??
I was having major issues with SetCPU when I originally set it up...
This was also when the phone just got rooted too though...
I thought we needed a modded kernel to do any CPU clocking things...?

Set cpu will only allow you to underclock and change governor. I would only suggest switching the governor to performance, which beware will drain your battery faster, because its reported that other than stock governor and performance cause phone to act goofy.
Cannot overclock yet, we may not be ever be able to because **** bootloader locking.
Just Froze most of the bloat ware using the free Bloat Freezer in the market and am already experiencing improved performance!!! Thank you all so much!
Hi all. I rooted my Sony Xperia Neo because he needed it, better speed, higher clock speed, everything better.
Then i bought HTC One X. After 6 months i rooted that to. Much better battery, more speed, smoother, better roms over all.
I am between rock and a hard place with the HTC One. Should i root it? What are the benefits? It's fun i know, but will the battery last so much longer? It has speed. It's smooth.
Please help make this decision easier :silly:
Thanks
I honestly don't think there's any real need to root it unless either you find bad performance in some areas or you want access to root apps.
Much like you, I've rooted previous devices because they needed that extra boost so I'd flash certain ROMs and/or kernels to solve those problems.
I didn't root my One for about a month because I wanted to see how it performed and it needed no boost whatsoever. I did end up rooting it though purely so I've got access to root apps which I'd previously used and got so used to them.
So my advice would be to leave it unrooted for now so you have time to really test the phone out and then see if you feel it needs any improvements at all

if youre satisfied with your phone as it is, i wouldnt root it just yet. unless youre bored or something and just want to mess around. or wait until you have a need to root it and then just do it.
I would agree with what has been said above by my fellow XDA'ers. I haven't rooted my One and it's going on 2 weeks now since i bought it. I honestly don't feel like i need any more CPU/GPU performance out of the device. I managed to get an AnTuTu score of 26511 on a completely untouched stock setup. All the apps and games that i've tested - and i've bought a handful of the most graphically demanding ones, like GTA Vice City, Modern Combat 4, etc - have showed no slowdowns or lags whatsoever. It's like having a Snapdragon 800 device at the moment - there are no apps/games right now that actually require its power. All that you can find on the Google Play store runs perfectly on a Snapdragon 600-powered device. Maybe by the end of this year or early 2014, if newer apps/games prove a bit laggy on the stock ROM, then i would consider rooting. By the way, i would highly recommend ARHD ROM from all the feedback that i've read. I downloaded his ROM already, but haven't made up my mind when to install it.
Battery life
Is the battery life better on the rooted htc one?
That's the biggest concern i have because im not too impressed with the battery performance on the stock phone.
I'm thinking about putting the latest cyanogenmod version on my one but not sure if i want to go through with it. I've had mine for couple days now.
1. What is the current root method? I know there's the D4 Utility but I'm not sure it's been updated for a good long while. Don't knock a good thing I suppose. I feel I've still seen Razrblade roaming around out there as well. What is the best root method at the moment, as I've seen there are different builds of BusyBox and Superuser these days. The last time I loaded root with the D4 System Utility I had a handful of things go wrong, nothing major but very decent annoyances, the Permissions for some Apps working right, but with others night (Or ones I've used before without the rooting problems). Just trying to find the most compatible/up to date one.
2. I'm confident the answer will be a resounding Cyanogen, but hear me out - What are the best current ROMs which involve energy efficiency, RAM/CPU Optimization? I'm a simple guy, I love tinkering but I don't keep any one thing installed for long. My normal day involves texting, browsing a web page or two, and playing a silly game called Dragons World, which eats battery like a mofo. I would just like the ability of longevity through the day, as it stand right now if I open Dragons World 4 times in a 2 hour period that's over 30% of my battery gone.I'm sure it's just the App, but I do adore it so.
3. On the same topic, What's the best modified Stock out there? Meaning deodexed, debloated or slim (Or all of the above), reducing the garbage usage of unused processes, or setting most of them to On Call only instead of running whenever they feel like it (I glare at you MotoGarbage). Just something nice, clean and effective.
4. Now the fun stuff, personal ROM right now? Most customizable? I love to have a side-loaded ROM which supports the latest features, alternative Lock screens, a new built in home screen (Not just a downloadable launcher from the Playstore thrown on top), a powerhouse of features, and interesting new items. the AVATAR ROM seems pretty nifty, however I've never used it's line, and I hear a lot of people run Eclipse however the latest edition I could find was for 4.1.2 ...
5. Leading me to the next question: So how about that 4.4/4.3? Is it even worth flashing at the moment? Is 4.3 stable and 4.4 highly questionable? Is there a major gain? I'm still running 4.1.2 stock after a fresh wipe from horrid slowness.
6. Last but not least, let's pull it all together: Safestrap or BMM? It feels like BMM has made a huge comeback, I see it's name everywhere these days, but I've been more or less born and raised on SS, ya know as with the D2 the only option was CWR and nothing else. I've seen a pros and cons, I consider myself an advanced user (As I've fiddled enough to wipe my own stock system even with SS...) so the mechanics don't scare me, more so the reliability of the programming itself. I hear it allows 2 system partitions thanks to the Webtop mount? That's pretty amazing, and has me willing and ready to try it unless proven otherwise of how SS is superior, since I know it just updated to 3.65.
Am I right in saying the top contenders for ROMs are still Cynanogen, Eclipse, Avatar and XXSlim?
It's been a while since I've been delving into this realm. Let me know what you can, I'll continue googling in the meantime.
I'm curious on this topic too, seems my d4 has been a little lacking on the tech side lately and it's time for a refresh!
Razrblade is the current root method unless you've updated to the latest version of the stock without root then you'll have to wait for a new method. Safe strap recovery I have found to be better than bmm. Stargos cm11 ROM is the best yet in my opinion. Try it out and good luck

Dear xda community,
I've rooted all my previous devices before in order to disable bloat, make them faster and to block add's.
The Note 5 (n920c) however is the first device i'm happy with stock.
I've upgraded to MM (UAE stock) and while it is much snappier/faster, android OS keeps draining my battery (Knox = 0)
The things i've tried are: Factory reset, clear cache, don't install any apps, disable bloat but the max SOT is 4h (light use).
So my question is:
Will rooting, installing TWRP and using SkyHigh kernel improve battery life and increase SOT?
Thanks in advance
it is personal preference to personal using.

Rooting definitely is, I was just wondering if installing a custom kernel (SkyHigh) would improve battery life in common.
I would like to try it, if only Knox was reversible

It all depends on you and your level of knowledge on setting things up
Personally rooted has always given me better battery life over not

If you want to disable samsung Bloatware, NO NEED ROOT
Try to use this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.packagedisabler
This app run WITHOUT ROOT permission
It will show all bloatware and you can disable any app, package (installed, bloatware, system) you want :good:

Thanks for the answer, but I've already disabled everything using Package disabler Pro.
I think i will take my chances and just install custom kernel and recovery.
The only downside on doing this, is that the resale value drops massively here in the Netherlands.
yea, i was on the same boat. note 5 is great with no root. but it can feel limited if you've always rooted your previous phones. For best battery life, I would suggest custom roms. That was the best thing for it.
I like my n5 enough to skip upgrade this year. Acutually I’m kinda at a point where upgrading phones is losing its appeal. I’m actually considering using my n5 until it breaks. You know, like anything else I use. Seems like only thing I buy even though it’s not broken, is a phone. And the high of a new phone only last for a short time, then I want another one. Just doesn’t seem right anymore. Getting old maybe. Only thing that worried me about N5 was the non-removable battery, and my previous Samsung phones battery usually performed bad after 1 year, but always could just buy another one and drop it in. BUT I saw a diy video of how to replace the N5 battery. That’s the only reason why I bought my N5. If it was pretty much impossible to replace the battery, I would’ve never bought this phone. So for me after using my N5 until it breaks, the resale value isn’t gonna be that much of a difference whether knox 1 or 0. That’s why I rooted. If you’re gonna upgrade this year to N6 or other phones, then it might be a harder decision. I would buy something else that doesn penalize you forever for rooting. Yea, listing your phone as knox 1 when selling is gonna be much harder, unless you sell it for much cheaper. That was my thought, too.
