How do I update my rooted phone? - Sprint LG G4

I have a rooted Sprint G4 running stock android 5.1 (with some apps frozen), my software version is LS991ZV5.
I am interested in updating to some of the newer ROMs running marshmallow, but I'm unsure of how exactly to do that as pretty much all of those say you must be running ZVA (or 6 or 9 or B).
If someone can hold my hand through the process - I'm particularly interested in this ROM - that would be awesome, but I would totally be cool with just some direction on what to read in order to figure it out by myself.
Thanks!

Hi there! Welcome. First, what you need to do is flash the stock system.img for ZV5. You can download that here.
Next, you need to update to ZV6. Then update again, to ZV9. Then update 1 more time to ZVA. DO NOT update past ZVA or you will be stuck and unable to flash the ROM.

Thank you. I'm assuming I can flash the system image via the instructions in this thread. For the updates, do I just take the OTA updates? Will this require me to root again once I get to ZVA?

Yes, follow those instructions to flash stock image. Then take OTA updates, but DO NOT update past ZVA. Unfortunately, root is not an option with Android 6.0 and our device.

I'm assuming I need to identify my DIAG port, and use that for the send_command.exe
After that, do I immediately type in the string from step 5, or wait for something to complete?
How long should each step take to complete? I don't see any sort of feedback on the phone or via the command prompt.

You type the command for step 5. Then, 2-5 minutes and you should see the # sign re-appear.

Here is a breakdown of software versions starting with ZV5 IN ORDER:
ZV5
ZV6
ZV9
ZVA
ZVB
So, if you check software version and are anything before ZVA, keep doing the software updates. Once you check software version and are at ZVA, you stop updating. Then flash ROM. If you are at ZVB, you are screwed and cannot do anything.

Download the nce downgrade file in the OP. And you'll be unrooted. Remember that ATT will most likely update you to 5.0 after they fix it or they will give you a phone with 5.0 on it most likely. if they replace it.

How can I back up recovery.img from Lollipop 5.1?

I recently unrooted my Moto X 1053 DevEd (GSM) in order to accept the Lollipop 5.1 OTA. I got the update and it's working great.
Now I want to re-root my phone, but first I want to be sure that I have a copy of stock recovery.img for Lollipop 5.1.
How can I back up recovery.img from my phone without my phone being rooted?
Thanks!
is temp booting custom recovery still possible... I haven't messed around with stuff in a while, but I think if you can temp boot twrp recovery (fastboot boot twrp) you might be able to use it to back up the stock recovery... you should google for more info on that, make sure it doesn't flash instead of boot.
otherwise you can't backup stock recovery without root. it's kind of a catch 22: you want to back up stock recovery before you root, but you can't do that on the device without root.
normally you can get the recovery from the stock firmware zip file. but I don't think Motorola is handing them out for 5.1 yet - if they are then it will be in that file. if not I suppose the next best thing is to rummage through the OTA file. I haven't unzipped it myself but it has to be in there right? some info that might help: the recovery size is 10mb. I can see it with the DiskInfo app, along with its block partition name mmcblk0p34, although it probably won't be named that in the zip file idk... anyway you can find the OTA here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9Eu943ka0GfQVVsdS13eHhZaU0/view?pli=1
That is a really, really helpful post, dtg7. I had hoped Moto would have posted the firmware, but I guess I'm too impatient. As I didn't have a separate copy of the OTA, I'm doing as you suggested and grabbing the OTA from the site you linked to. I'll try to extract the recovery.img file from there. I'll post my results.
Yes, this is a classic catch 22, as you say.

This is precisely my problem. I get semi-proficient with phone stuff every now and then when I'm changing things around, but then I forget almost everything I need to know to do the most basic geek maneuvers. When I had an HTC Sensation, which was a favorite for ROM-makers and modders, I was swapping out the ROM nearly every day between meals. With the Moto X I haven't done this much, maybe because I've gotten older, but mainly because there don't seem to be as many custom ROMs for the Moto X (nor is as much need for them, with Xposed and with a decent stock ROM.

Isn't that a link to KitKat 4.4.4 (i.e., 213.44.1)?
I've got Lollipop 5.1 on my phone, and "About Phone" lists it as 222.21.15.
It's actually system.img from 222.21.15 that I'm trying to get ahold of.

Maybe I didn't look hard enough.
I *did* find the 4.4.4 recovery.img in the uncompressed file I requested and received from Moto. It seems like Moto sometimes uses the same recovery.img from release to release, but I'd be skittish about using this with stock 5.1 until someone can give it the all-clear. As of right now (27 june 15, 9:00 GMT), Moto hasn't posted stock 5.1.

Downgrading troubles ZVA->ZV6

Hey guys,
First off, i thought I had already posted this question but I can not even find it in my ousting of posts. So I want to apologize I advance of this ends up as a duplicate.
I currently have a Sprint LG4 that upgraded to ZVA and I lost hotspot. Trying any method to downgrade, fails. Using LGUP fails with "SPC code does not match." and LG Flash Tool says error at DoDownload and nothing other than a code, 00000064. I have also tried the method using systemZV6.img and dd via SendCommand but nothing happens at all with that one after i press Enter and wait a few his.
I have tried various USB ports and all drivers I could find on these forums. Windows 7. Any other info I can provide to help you help me? I am no stranger to flashing other phones, but having no luck here. Searching the web hasn't turned up any help. Thanks in advance.
Is the phone bricked now? You can't downgrade from ZVA to ZV6, because the qfuse version is different.
Thanks apparently i missed that one somewhere as a search via duck duck go never gave turned up results that stated so. In fact the last posts of http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-g4/general/how-to-free-mobile-hotspot-root-t3165049/page16 led me to believe it was possible.
Fortunately it is not bricked. Thanks for your reply.

Since it is not bricked, you could probably fix it by flashing the ZV9 update. I don't think there is a tot for ZVA yet, so you might possibly have to wait until there is one available.

I don't think you can even use ZV9. I know I said you probably could, but I forgot that's the whole reason you're here; because the qfuse version is different. You will have to wait until a ZVA TOT is available.
I could be wrong, but I'm not a dev. At least be thankful your phone isn't completely bricked.
I just downgrade from ZVA to ZV6 using LGUP. Just the first boot take more time than usual but I did factory reset and everything fine.
qfuse is not different. It should work fine.

Having issues as well. ZVA>ZV6. When I dl the tot file and run it in LG up it says it's not a valid tot file. Also tried the LG flash tool method and get an error message. Any help?

Anyone try to update back to ZVA after root?
Once rooted you can't use the OTA updates because they will fail. They check for that kind of crap. Sucks, but you're stuck on ZV6 with root until the devs work out a bootloader unlock, which may take some serious time. LG sucks major donkey balls because they have some pretty secure bootloaders, now. The best thing you can do is stick with ZV6 at the moment. I know, I know, security patches! Marshmallow! Still, wait until they get something worked out.
Thanks, i figured. Only reason i ask is because im having an issue with mircast. Not sure if its because im on ZV6 or because im on UltraPop..

yes, same thread, just do the steps about OEM Unlocking and Root. i would grab the most recent twrp image from here (3.1.1-1) and the latest SuperSU here (2.82 TWRP Installable Zip)
you will also need adb and fastboot tools on your pc, get that here, latest version is 1.4.3
or you can just flash twrp and then flash an already rooted system image for 20v from @MicroMod777 found here

For me, that variable is twrp. If I flashall to stock I can take the ota, then resinstall twrp and root after. Worked today too.
I was going to install LineageOS and just gave up on it lol. So I flash-all'd back to stock and the OTA worked this time.
So is there a method for clean flashing or i just flash over a rom using fastboot? I tried flashing a retail rom on my tmobile variant, it work but some things were broken.
