[Hardware] How to fix Xperia SP SIM Reader? - Xperia SP Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First of all, sorry if it is not the right subforum for this question.
The pins of SIM reader are broken and I ask for help to fix it. I know it is necessary to change the reader but I was searching the solution and Im not found a tutorial that explained well. Someone has managed to fix the same problem? If so, please share it. I would like to return to work.
Thank u very much and sorry for my english.

Hi
I am not well into electrical component, but in my experience of disassembling the Xperia SP, the SIM reader and SD Card slot is mounted indefinitely to the motherboard. I'm not very certain that you can replace it.
Although, if you are speaking of changing the pins directly on the module, then I am really out of knowledge on that matter.

insert the card in a adapter and see if ur pc reads it. it the pc reads the card than problem is w/ phone. now this could be either hardware or software issue ad i suggest u check w/ ur carrier.
I think it is a hardware issue.

for more details and post any ideas there svp
I have made a poll to see how many Kaisers have the same problem.

Kaiser problem: cannot read storage card

Hi guys,
I have just bought my Tilt 8925. Everything is going fine except the Storage card, the PDA seems not able to read the storage card - Kingston 1G mircoSD.
I tried something like:
- Format the card with my PC and copy some file into the card but when I use File Explorer to find the card, nothing there.
- Check About: Expansion slot: In use
- Check Memory: Total storage card memory: Not installed.
What should I do to make the PDA recognize the card? Any help is much appreciated.
Hi there
Have you tried formatting the card with the PDA instead of the PC? I'm sure Windows Mobile has the setting somewhere (can't think off the top of my head!)
Or, could use 3rd party software like Pocket Mechanic to format it?

I have used Pocket Mechanic but even this software can not find the storage card. I have also tried with a few other cards but the phone can not read either.
What should I do now?
I think you may have a bad storage card. Have you tried another one?
If you try another and it still fails to read the card then it is the Tilt, but try another card first.

If you've tried other cards, then it seems like your phone has a hardware problem with the microSD slot. If you're still under the 1 year warranty, it should be covered.
Had a similar problem with my htc tytn ii (not tilt). Was a day away from booking it in for repairs when I downloaded the official WM6.1 rom. Flashed it and it worked.
Then it worked again. Hard reset didn't do the trick for me.
Thanks all guys
I have tried all solution that I could find from forum, google...But I have to convince myself that it is hardware problem.
I will flash another ROM as last hope.
I have the same problem for about 1month now.. It just stopped reading the mem card.. After a few days, I was able to see the card again in the device's file explorer, but after a few minutes it desappeared (lol)
I needed my tytnII, so I haven't send the device for repairs yet, but I will tomorrow..
I tried everything possible (tried to use other mem cards, flash offcial roms, cooked light roms, etc) but nothing worked.. And my mem card is read by other devices.. I'm also convinced it is a hardware prob..
Just be sure to revert to an official rom and revert the SPL as well, so you don't void the warranty.. You can find the instructions here
Cheers
Hi again
I know this doesn't really help but I had a similar problem with an SD card I bought for a digital camera a while ago (256MB card - biggest there was when I bought it )
I had bought 2 cameras and 2 cards (one for me, one for my dad). His memory card just refused to work in either of the cameras, but worked fine in my Nokia 6600 (told you it was a while ago!). Tried formatting with the PC, phone etc. but nothing worked - had to get a new SD card in the end to replace it
I'm having the same problem. Expansion slot says it's in use, but file explorer shows no card installed. Settings - Memory says no installation. Do you really think flashing a 6.1 rom might help?

Who are you asking?
Does it not see other cards? Even after a hard reset? If you don't have 6.1 then I would say that you are behind the times.
ChumlyEX:
I've read plenty of posts saying that 6.0 is preferred for many situations, stability among them. I just moved to ppc and haven't flashed yet. Do you recommend a specific cooked version?
Very Similar Problem
Hey everyone, before anyone says anything, i researched this pretty good and havent seen an issue similar to mine and this thread is a bit old so i might start a new one.
My problem is that my at&t Tilt is only reading one of my microsd cards,
they are all sandisk, they range from 64mb, 128, 256, (3 different 1 gig) 2 gig and a 4gig sdhc
the tilt reads the 128 with no problems, the others, in About section it shows expansion slot in use, but under Memory it says not installed. does the same for all except the 128mb
i tried them on another tilt, they all work fine
i tried them on my htc wizard, they work fine (with the exception of the 4g sdhc) because wizard has no support for sdhc.
they are all formatted over and over, tried fat32, and fat16 using windows xp, also tried formatting using good old DOS
Scanned them for visruses, none found
I just got the phone so i dont knonw much about the history of the situation, however it had original ship rom, tried reflashing, upgrading to different at&t roms (3 total) tried custom roms.
anyway if anyone reads this and knows something it would be very helpful
Thanks
I had the same problem. My Tytn stopped seeing storage card. I tried another card, same problem. I've flashed the ROM, same problem again. So I guessed it's not the software problem, it is hardware. I gave my device to repair store and they realized that one pin from card reader slot was broken and unable to read card.
That happen because the card I bought was just a slight wider than it should be, it's card manufacturers problem. And when I was putting that card in the slot, it broken one of the pins. It's unable to see it through slot, you need to open device.
They needed to replace whole slot and that cost me about 250 Euros.
****ty thing..
p.s. If you planing to return your phone to repair store and you still got warranty, be sure that you put back original ROM, if you have flashed now. They will not approve you warranty if you have custom ROM
Feedback changed flex cable
ok so this is intressting, and as i was saying in my previous post, there was no problem with the cards (that im aware of) and they worked on my friends tilt, so after some convincing, i got him to agree to let me take his phone apart this morning and swap up the cables so i dont go and buy a flex cable and it turns out its not it. well i took em both apart (without braking anything!!) and i power it up, and guess what, it did the exact same thing!!!!
so a working flex cable did not solve the problem, i tried my cable in his phone, and it worked, read about 7 different micro sd cards!
unless its the motherboard of the phone, or it has to be some software that a hard reset or oem rom wont fix.
there has to be something, i just wish i could find it!
well yesterday i was drunk and dropped my tilt into a toilet full of piss. I took it out to dry, took battery out and shut it off... i forgot to take out my microsd card though.
My tilt is working somewhat fine but its still clearly water damaged. same problem with all of u.. my phoen wont read the microSD card now and i cant load up android which is bull****. so it must be a hardware problem imo
that sux to hear, well i dont belive mine got wet, not that i know of and no signs of water intrusion on the little white water detectors. I am still trying different sdhc drivers but nothing yet
I solved my problem with a new front board and main ribbon. Swapped them out and everything reads perfectly. I paid around $30 or so on ebay for the part.

lucky you!! i did that and it didn't change anything
i even swaped boards, sim card reader, lcd screen, but it has to be something in the main board, i still belive it's a software issue or firmware maybe, something still stuck on that board, i tried it all from hard resets to different roms, spls, radios, reverting back to ship rom, other official roms and nothing. expension slot shows in use, but no storage card with the exception of a couple of different small ones that will show in file explorer, i can install cabs from them but cant really copy anything from device to card or card to device this is so annoying. I even went out and bought a new micro sd and ended up returning it cuz it did the same thing
Final Update
well i was sure that it had something to do with the board of the phone or at least a software or registry issue that was causing this problem, after being 100% sure that it wasnt the flex cable or anything I was lucky to find a motherboard for $26.50 (with shipping) on ebay, so i didn't even hesitate, baught it, swaped the camera (it was the only thing missing) and everything works! i dont know what i'm gona do with the board, but i doubt that im gona give up on figuring out what caused this problem and how to fix it, and i will keep on checking this thread on regular basics

att TILT erased all my data on the SD Card

Hi All
I had stored all my data and some apps on my 4gb Sandisk SD card and all of a sudden all the data from the card is gone. I notice error messages of applications like google map etc that i had installed on the Sd card when they were trying to run they could no longer see the files. IS there a fix for this problem? I see i n other places they decribe a lengthy procedure including buying some softwares for restoring data, however if i do that i think the data can vanish anytime again. I also see others complaining about this,, please let me know if there is any other easy way to restore data, and how can i permanently fix the problem? does att help??
Put the card in your computer, see if you can run a disk check on it.
I've had my SD card 'look blank' or not even show up on the Tilt three times since I've owned it and all three times I did a filesystem check and it found errors. Once corrected, the card was fine again.
Yeah, you need to find out a little more information as to what is going on.
First off figure out if it is the phone or the card that is the problem.
Remove the card and find some other way of reading it. It could be something as simple as a bad connection on the terminal pins. Maybe clean them or see if they are bent out of place.
Maybe the card has bad sectors. Doing what khaystsus said will help you find that out.
At any rate, there are alot of things that could cause the same problems so a little more investigation and information is needed for anyone to help you any further.

Thanks I will try with the computer, ,but this is not a isolated problem if you do a search in google, you will see very many people complaining of the same thing.

Of course this is not an isolated problem -- this can happen on any WM phone. given the right conditions
It happened several times on my old ETEN.
One culprit is if you run the tweak to store your IE cache files on the card instead of internal memory -- this has been known to corrupt the card.
Other things can happen also -- which is why I backup my card at least once a week.

My HTC does not read micro-sd

Friends, a cordial greeting to all.
My problem is that my sister was cleaning the bed makes a bit and then accidentally not fixed in the cell and fell.
Since then it recojí and then wanted to listen to music but the micro-sd not detected.
Probe with other, but did not work, blowing the memory input and nothing, told me that did not detect the SD Card.
So let me know if you can help me with this problem, or return to Windows Mobile without SD Card, since I have Android and I have installed gives me problems starting, I need help please!
Try other card if can't, try reinstall rom if still can't you need to change the flex cable.

[Q] Captivate Hardware ?'s

I got my cappy a while back as a backup. Rooted, installed cm and moved on to the "captivating xperia theme'd rom" that I found here. I have a GS3 so I decided to get a sim card adapter to use it in the cappy. I tried it out and it worked great. Unfortunately from there I had the stupid idea to put the empty sim adapter in the captivate's slot because I thought "hey this is really small and I don't want to loose it". The adapter card just got stuck on the push pins that make contact with the sim and when i pulled it out one broke off.
So, I searched around and found a nice main board replacement guide. I also found a replacement board for about $17. The main board has the sim card and ext sd card structure attached, but I don't know what else is contained in there?
Does anyone have experience with this type of hardware replacement?
What is contained in the "sim card and sd card pcb board? With this new board will my device be hardware with no software? Will I have to flash everything as if it were straight off the assembly line or is that info contained somewhere else in the phone?
Thanks for any help

I'm not 100% certain but the last time I had my cappy opened up I believe the sim/sd card board attaches to the main board via ribbon cable. If that's the case then you should just be able to swap out what was broke and move on. Again I'm not certain of this and don't have the time before heading to work to disassemble my phone to check.
As far as what you would need in terms of software on a complete replacement I'm sorry to say that I have no idea.
hey thanks for the response -
indeed there is a big ribbon with over 20 pins on it that comes up from what may actually be the main board along with a smaller one
then there's the ribbons that go from this board i've taken out to the cam and the speaker as well
i've actually already got the thing disassembled and waiting on the new board
i hope this is the case and i don't have to worry about trying to flash from the very start

Just in case anyone saw this thread or encountered the same issue with the sim card/sd card slot -
I got the parts easily and fast from global direct parts
I switched the parts out and the phone works great
The SD/Sim portion of the board actually separates from the main board with some simple shielding underneath
I found a great tear down guide here -
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+Samsung+Captivate+Motherboard/6823/2
But you have to go one step further and pull separate the sd/sim board at the end.
