Help Needed. Screen cracked need to retrieve photos - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Wish I was posting with something better then this. Anyhow I recently dropped my phone, and it destroyed my screen. I am unable to see anything on the screen but it still seems to respond to touch. I do not have MTP mode enabled and need to retrieve some photos of my kid off the phone before I have to send it back to asurion. I tried to find a step by step online that included pictures so I would know where I needed to touch the screen but alas I wasn't able to find one. Would anyone be willing to screen shot the process for me so I can retrieve the photos, or does anyone have a better idea? Thanks guys!

When you setup your Gmail account there was an option to save all contacts and data from your phone. I would try to login to your Gmail account then on the side it will say photos and your picture might be in there.

Contacts with higher res pics?

is it possible?
I would like to know this too, currently they are shocking.
(from what I found on the web) Apparently the facebook app saves small thumbnails, and they look bad when blown up on hi-res phones.
As a workaround you can try to set a google contact photo manually instead http://www.google.com/contacts.
update: this does not work either so its not just a facebook app issue.
One of my contact pictures is set through the phone via a photo i took with the camera, it still looks ****e. I can't think of any workaround.

yup, contact images set via google contacts show up blurry too
facebook for HTC is using hi res facebook profile picture when synching to contacts..
i switched to sense UI the other day and i found out contact synching with facebook using facebook for HTC not the normal android facebook app.
One of the developers had tried in the past to make the dialer show the contact photo filling the entire screen. Unfortunately Google resizes the images to 96px (if my memory is still working.<EDIT: Memory is working! yay!>) This is a setting we don't have any control over, its something google has set, above and beyond our control.
EDIT: This is the thread where pics are reported to revert back to 96px after they sync with google.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=576310
Then again, I'm not sure if anyone has tried to just call the images locally off the sdcard or something along the lines. (The problem would be, once you lose your phone, all the contact photos would be gone.) No sure if anyone has tried this before, if not, I might take a whack at it.
Man...didn't notice 'til I read this thread...LoL.

[Q] facebook sync / profile picture problem

Hi, im ob darkys ROM 9.3.
Made a fresh clean Setup with factory reset.
The following steps were performed in many different ways:
I can't synch my fb contacts. Hi see the profile names with their information in my contacts, their photo also, but at the linked accounts field is the standard green phone contacts icon. Instead of Facebook its labeled with:unknown. But the missing blue fb icon (and the option to see the media and social fb tab in my contacts) there is another thing that is real annoying :
The profile pictures are shown in their profiles on my phone, but there's a blank image if they call me or in the message tab. Tried several different ways to solve the problem:
Import of an full contacts backup via Titan/myphoneexplorer/kids. Once in an empty phone without linked fb accs. Another time with facebook-filled contacts and than i tried to merge theprofiles..
Itried to use apps like acepic, which shows me an empty profile pic for the online and offline account (at this time both of them were definitely not empty) i tried the photo unlocked, which should give me the ability to use the stored fb profile pictures at my phone in other apps like goDialer... (so i thought it should also work for my message/caller id problem) but it said "coulnt connect to database... maybe busy. - over and over again.
I can set.up the fb contacts in 2 ways: about the account settings in my phone menu,or about the Facebook app. The first option gives me the option to select "add friends" (sorry, don't know the English title for the button. It is the one in the contacts menu, which let u choose your sns account in order to perform a buddy synchronization with your local contacts. But its kinda grey and if i select it, there pops an empty box with an ok button.
Probably you noticed that i tried several ways. I really have no more clues... i want this damn Facebook pictures in the message history and as a damn caller id. Iam from Germany... maybe that's important for some localisation things, i don't know.
PS. It worked before darkys
hey not that its much help but ive been having this issue also. also was on darkys
finally! Im not alone, thats nice to hear... googled like crazy but didnt find anything.
google seems to be a pain for finding these things.
im stuck on my own problem at the moment, i flashed a captivate firmware on my phone by mistake now wont boot :/ and i need my fone fast lol
Google removed that feature from.facebooks functionality about two weeks ago. Sorry guys!

yeah, is red it already. But it only affects the Nexus One. Dont know if u red my post: The sync option IS available! And it works. But the downloaded pictures were only shown in my contact book.
And because of the app "photo unlocker" which repeats in saying: Database is busy, try again - i think theres a problem somewhere, which blocks other applications from reading in the database....
i have installed js8 with a rom of the kitchen. It seems that the pic sync doesnt work the way it should.
Is there any PC manager to sync and manage contacts ? So that i can give them pictures and push them back to my sgs ?

[Q] Google Contacts Pictures with dot filter

Hi All,
Setup my device last night, and a while ago, I started creating all my phone contacts as google ones, so that on restore, or setting up a new device, syncing my google account would bring all my numbers down.
However I noticed something a little bit strange. Some of my contacts appear to have their pictures there, and look fine in the small thumbnail in the people app, but when opening up the picture, it has a strange dot filter applied to it.
I use HaxSync to add facebook pictures as my google contact pictures, and when viewing them from a web browser they are fine. Doesnt seem to happen to all, just a few.
Anyone encountered this too? Any ideas about how to get around it? Seems very odd
Regards
Jonny
Update, well there was definitely something strange going on, and I haven't figured it out, but as a work around, in gmail (on a PC) I exported all my contacts to a google file. This neglects to export images that are on the contacts.
I then deleted all my contacts and synced my phone up, basically removing all contacts, and removed HaxSync. I then imported my saved contacts and instead of using a third party app to get high resolution photos for contacts, I did a contacts sync from the facebook app direct.
The images pulled still seem to be of decent clarity so maybe its something to do with the way the phone (or contacts app) parses images that are embedded into your google contacts.
I actually remember reading in a review about this filter too - trying to find it, but not that important now really.
Anyway. If anyone figures out why it does it then that would be good, and probably helpful to others at some point

From my understading HTC have been quite clever
Google contacts as a general rule of thumb (pardon the pun) use small thumbnails. Only recently have they started using higher quality thumbnails for contacts. Anyway, if the image is of low quality instead of it being pixelated and looking like sh*t, they basically add the dot matrix filter to make it look a bit more professional. To be fair, hats off to HTC it works and they are the first people i've seen attempt such a thing.
The secret is to get gmail contacts all high res, the problem is i am still struggling on just how to do that, seemed to work fine on my nexus but it varies from one device to another, pain in the arse in all honesty.
Ah that seems to make sense. That would explain why it would happen on only a few specific pictures.
The Facebook contact sync still seems to be working well, and there are only a few that have the filter now. I might go and double check to if those that are filtered have low resolution pictures on their Facebook account.

That is OK and definitely solve the problem. But to do it contact by contact having 1400 people in register and approx half of them are pictured, then it may be be time consuming process Interestingly I have not had this problem with my recently purchased xperia Z. Would be fine to solve it with an updated patch.

[Q] Contact photo question, this is driving me INSANE

Hey y'all
Anyone know of a way to stop contact photos from syncing to my address book without disabling contact sync altogether?
I went through and deleted all the Contact Photos associated with the contacts in my address book. It took forever. Seriously. And 5 minutes later all my contacts had their photos re-synced back in to my address book..
I don't want to disable contact sync altogether because I do use it but how the hell do you get rid of their photos without them returning?!
THANKS!
AHH!
I think if you delete them off your device and from your Google account on a PC, you should be fine. Perhaps put your phone in airplane mode to be safe, delete photos. Log into gmail and be sure contact photos are deleted? Never tried, so I'm just guessing here.
Check the settings in Google + there is an option to keep contacts up to date or something like that.

Repeating emails

Hi, loving my new P20 Pro.
Apart from finding a good screen protector, my only issue is emails.
Using the stock APP and keep getting the same emails coming in, sometimes 3 or 4 times a day.
I'm using Sky Mail on POP3 as I don't want to lose anything that I might want to save to a folder on my PC (it's using Thunderbird in case that matters) and I don't get doublers on there, just mobile.
Any thoughts much appreciated

Howdy stewarta13wsb,
Depending on where you live, I would recommend looking through amazon. I've been able to find a pretty affordable screen protector. That's first.
Now regarding your repetitive pop ups about new emails. Help me clarify a couple of questions please. You are receiving 3 or 4 notifications on your phone about new email, correct? The main server is receiving just one email and doesn't duplicate anything (I'm assuming this because of your mentioning about that PC only gets one email).
My guess would be the following: either your mobile is setup to pop up a notification about new email multiple times (until you actually check the contents of the email), or the email server keeps on sending email and isn't receiving a confirmation receipt from the phone, thus pushing new email item multiple times until this receipt is finally sent by the phone/received by the server. That would also explain why it's not consistent (happens 3-4 times instead of it being always 2 for example).
Again, this is just a guess. I would recommend looking into the email setup on your phone again. Perhaps deleting any profiles from the phone and setting everything up from scratch again. As IT would always ask: "Did you try rebooting it?"
Thanks for that, 3rd screen protector arrived from Amazon today... looking good (Spigen - same as case!)
No I don't get multiple notifications, I get multiple copies of the same email. Your second description made a lot of sense though - I'm pretty quick at read & delete, sometimes just delete and immediately empty the bin. Maybe it's me - too fast for the receipt message to be sent. I wondered if it kept coming until I deleted it on the PC but I don't know for sure.
Further testing and maybe re-add the account. It's just Sky I think, not my GMail account.
Thanks for your thoughts.
Screen protector issue sorted - Spigen Huawei P20 Pro Screen Protector, Case-Friendly, Tempered Glass - although it doesn't seem to stick right up to the edges? There is a definite gap.
Email wise, still driving me mad. Didn't like Gmail or IMAP, prefer POP3, and didn't find it easy to use - might just have needed more time but back to stock APP, but still get double or more email reciepts after they have been deleted and cleared out the bin. Some of today's must have come in maybe 4 times!!
Any thoughts?
Anybody else on stock APP have this issue?
Another day, another 6 emails arrived possibly for the 4th time... anybody?

Hope the screengrab worked?
This is driving me mad... I know there's an expert out there, they just need to read my post
