MHL Adapter - Galaxy Tab S2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!
I just bought a MHL adapter for my Tab and it doesn't work. The adapter runs with no problems with the HTC ONE M8(just Plug&play) , but on my Tab S2 i get only a slow chargin message.
Is there something that I need to do in the settings menu in order to get the connection?

I had all kinds of trouble getting either my 710 or 810 to connect. If I fiddled with it enough, pluging/unplugging, turning the TV off/on while plugged in, switch apps etc. it would finally connect but the resolution was lousy. Broke down and bought a Chromecast dongle. Even with that, the Screen Mirror res was bad but apps with built in Chromecast connectivity like Netflix were OK.
Sorry for the bad news but Samsung really dropped the ball on this issue.

I have a cheapo mhl adapter for my tab S that works just fine. Resolution is fine too.

Is your tablet rooted?

Which MHL adapter, specially, are you using that doesn't work?

A cheap one,i don't know...it just says MHL Adapter on the damn thing.
And is a 5 pin model,i'm going to try one with 11 pins.

Yeah, I think you'll have better luck with an 11-pin adapter. I don't think a 5-pin one will work on the S6.

http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab-accessories/ET-H10FAUWEGUJ

The best will be universal - 5 & 11 pins in one.

Define "fine". What resolution are you getting? 460P , 720p or 1080p? And what aspect ratio? IOW, does the picture fill the screen or do you have wide black bands or each side?

Galaxy Note TV Out

Can't find anything on the internet so here goes. Does the note support TV out. I haven't got a cable to test at the minute
Thanks

You cannot find, or you forgot to google ?
The note hs HDMI over MHL.
So you need to buy the cable
Yes I know it has hdmi out as I have found that on Google and eBay I'm talking about standard old Samsung TV out via 3.5mm so I can use it with my vuzix wrap

Yes it supports TV out. You need to buy an MHL adapter though. That said, it works like a charm. However, it does bog down the performance of the device (except when playing movies) because it's having to do the processing for two displays instead of one. Playing games, or web browsing, etc will be noticeably slower. However, if all you're using it is for media output, you should have no problems.
You can usually get your hands on an MHL adapter for about $20 or less.
I'm thinking about buying a HDMI MHL "cable", but have anyone here tried this one or this one? Do we need a specific MHL cable, or can we use all of them?
Edit: Found the original Samsung MHL cable for 20 Euros, so i think i'll go with that instead. It says its for SII and Galaxy Nexus, so i guess it'll work with the Note too.

Either of the one that you listed should work just fine. There's really little/no difference between those and the official Samsung one because MHL is an open standard, and hence will be compatible across many different platforms and vendors.
OK! Thanks
Now, here's a tip for possibly getting your official Samsung MHL adapter for free: Go to your local AT&T store and ask the rep if they still have the accessories for their Infuse 4G display unit. Normally they send those all back to corporate, but if you're lucky, they may still have theirs, and since corporate just throws them away anyhow, the store had no issues with just giving me their spare MHL adapter for free
I set it up with external power but couldn't get it to work. The phone switched to CLOCK.
Would a cheap $11 eBay MHL adapter work well or do we have to fork out $40 for the Samsung one?

I bought a (what would be about) $9usd cable in a small store in Hong Kong, and it works perfectly.
You have to plug the power part in first (I have a power bank thing which works well), then the micro usb into the phone, and then the phone will start outputting. Don't just plug in the microusb->hdmi and then the power, that didn't work for me and I spent a while trying to figure it out. I haven't noticed any additional lag at all.
Everything is displayed. When the phone is in portrait mode (e.g. launcher) the TV will have lots of black on either side. When playing videos landscape, it takes up the full tv screen. Sound is also output.
my tv does not have hdmi and only have the traditional red/yellow/white input. Is there any cable to connect my note to my old fashioned tv?
You can probably get some kind of HDMI to component converter, but with hdmi being digital the signal will need to be converted to analog so it will be expensive.

the price you will pay for that best you buy a new tv because the convertor sucks trust me when i say so..... a proper convertor will run 100 bucks plus even then the tv can handle the HD res so it will flicker and blank in and out or dont shows at all... spend 129 and get a nice 27" or higher native hdmi monitor...

Well, now you have one more reason. Also, a 15" CRT (ie. the old-style tube) TV consumes several times more electricity than even a 40" LCD/LED one so you're only doing a disservice to yourself by using it.
How to turn off screen using hdmi out? as battery consumption is so high even the charger cant keep up when streaming video.
I'm also having problems with my MHL adapter.
I bought this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005KJYMSC/ref=oh_o00_s02_i00_details
from amazon, as it was cheap says specifically it is compatible with the Note.
But it doesn't work, my TV just says no signal. I have the charger plugged into it, I have my 3g turned off. Everything seems right, but it wont work. I'm rather annoyed.
I have a feeling, that despite it saying so on the listing, it is infact not compatible with the Note. It says on the packaging max resolution 1280x720p... so that could well be the problem.
Moral of the story, buy the official Samsung one and save yourself the bother!
Guys,
I would like to connect my note to my car radio (7 inch screen) which has video in RCA cable.
I bought this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=261025098138&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123
However, it does not work when I try it on my TV. It says 'no signal'. I was told by the seller that the Note does not have the TV out option as opposed to the S2 for example. I've checked the specs on the samsung galaxy website (TV out for S2, no TV out for Note in the connectivity list).
So, is there a specific cable like MHL to RCA that I could use?
Thanks
I got the original samsung mhl adapter from a very nice fellow here on xda for $10 shipped, he had a bunch of them he was giving away, I tried it on my S2 (Note on CM9 doesn't do MHL) and other note was broken.
Once I get both my notes back I can update the thread with more info.

MHL cable anywhere?

Has anyone found a compatible mhl cable to order?

I tryed my old MHL cable adaptor (bought some months ago for my old SGS2) and the video quality it's great but no digital audio from device. :'(
Some other people tryed other adaptor?
Samsung works great
I bought the one from Samsung original, amazing 1080p quality, best I ever saw on my 40 inch television.
It's the one that samsung offers for S2 and S3 and it works really perfect, no lag, no glitches and it gives amazing high quality.

But Samsung has different cables for S2 and S3... I have MHL adaptor for S2 and it works perfectly with P880. With sound of course...
Is there a way to wirelessly mirror content? I think the SGS3 can do this with a special apparatus or something.

I retried it and great video and audio. Sorry. But only in 720P. My TV it's HD-Ready and not FULL-HD.
My MHL adapter it's a simple model compatible with GS2 and I bought on eBay one year ago. I payed it only 10 euros.
I can see some of you having success in display it on the TV
but I have try two different MHL adapter (I dont know if it is for S2 or S3 but I can;t seem to get it work on a computer monitor with HDMI
are there any sitting I need to change or apps that I need to install???
Maybe some settings in the hidden menu will do the trick for those where it doesn't work (not tested, since I don't own a MHL-Adapter)
Type: 3845#*880# in the phone app and the hidden menu will open. Scroll to the end and choose "HDMI Resolution Test"
There are some Settings, maybe something will make the Adapter work
will try
Hey,
I am occurring the same problem, and its annoying, but credit to Hidden92 in the "resolution" menu under "HDMI Resolution Test" , i have changed resolution to any of them and only once the email on my Samsung TV appeared.
Also i have noticed that the settings that i am selecting doesnt saved and each time i am getting into "HDMI Resolution Test" menu , the settings rolled back to default.
Well...
Anyway , you should try to do this , the less it will work for you
=====EDIT======
I have managed to Play movies using MHL cable.
it has been some connector problem, i have moved the cable abit left to right and it begin to work.
Hey MrWunderbaum,
I own 4X and using Generic MHL cable 1080p that was bough for 15$.
Everything works fine.
You should try.
In Addition, LG owns their own MHL cables , but they are abit more expensive.
I tried and mhl 3M cable that is supposed to charge the cell phone while you project, but the problem is that it must be connected to energy to work. the cable is supposed to be designed for samsung SIII and SII
Sorry for hijacking this thread a little bit and pardon my rant.
Not too long ago i bought a mini HDMI to HDMI cable for my Optimus 3D. But now im using 4X, I can't help but feel i've been f**king trolled by LG somewhat cause that cable i had is now utterly useless. Instead they are using this MHL cable.
i mean, why can't they put a mini HDMI port for the good of saving the planet and our wallets like what they are doing for microUSB?
I've got few questions in mind. Are they going to introduce another cable for their next line-up? Is this MHL port here to stay? Nobody wants to spend 30 bucks buying a cable and to have it put out of the picture by the time he change phone next year.

MHL will stay I guess. Mini-HDMI is actually quite useless, it is necessary to add an additional port to the phone for something that can be done using the already existing one (less places where dust can get into the device). The only problem is the high price for MHL cables (The mini-HDMI adapter for my O2X was about 3€).
Cheap and good
I use this: http://goo.gl/13LEr
Play 1080p and Netflix for HD TV very well.
I have ordered myself S2 mhl adapter that also has seperate charging port. I dont need long wire as i already have long hdmi cable connected to tv, so i just needed smaller adapter to connect to tv hdmi cable. Hope it works - mhl + charging
Check out the 1 i ordered (already shipped ) :

HDMI Cable

Will any Mini HDMI to HDMI cable work for the Nexus 10? What I mean is, are there different ones, the part you plug into the Nexus, I know there are like tons of different usb connections.
I want to play content on a TV. I found a nice cheap $7.99 cable from Walmart, but don't know if it will do what I want?

It is microHDMI. I bought this one from Monoprice for $7.50 and it outputs both audio and video just fine.
So Mini would be a different one then?
Alright, are there USB to HDMI cables available? Does that do everything, any benefits?
You need a micro hdmi cable for your nexus 10... There are micro Usb to hdmi cables but they are for phones/tabs that use MHL... The nexus 10 has a dedicated hdmi port

Hey guys.
So I bought one of these, only a 3 foot one, and it's absolutely wonderful.
Two questions though....
How long of a cable can I have before there becomes a streaming issue?
Also, how can I blank the tablet's screen while having it still continue to stream video content?
My device is rooted and I have Xposed framework installed.
Cheers.

WTF! This g-d [email protected] thing ruined my tablet. I installed it, then it went to screen off mode, which disabled my HDMI out too. So I couldn't see anything, so I turned it off and back on, and when it came back ... it was all reset to factory! everything is gone! Piece of crap

I have a micro HDMI I got from amazon and I use this app and works well after you learn how to set it up. Once you install you need to set your screen on regular settings to stay awake, I usually set it to 30 min, so the tablet won't turn the screen of while watching video, then I set the app in the settings to turn off screen with HDMI cable detection, then if you need to wake the screen after is off and you're watching something, it has a shake to wake feature, just shake the tab and will wake the screen up.
I have had it wake the screen up before while watching a vid but not often.

[Q] MHL Lag with official Samsung Adapter

Has anybody tried the official Samsung MHL adapter with the Note 3 yet? I picked one up and it is laggy. The tv displays exactly what is on the phone but when hooked up to MHL the phone seems to lag. As in, if I look at the phone's screen it is lagging behind too. When I unplug the MHL cable, it stops lagging. Tried with some games and even the line that follows your fingers using swype lags. Anybody else try this and have this issue?
Note 3 has MHL?
I plugged it in with my MHL cable that came with my home theater receiver and nothing came up on screen.
On my Optimus G I just plug the cable in to the micro USB and bam it works.
Do we really need a special adapter?

If it is a normal MHL cable you need the 5 pin to 11 pin adapter Samsung sells. I think I may have figured out my issue. Looks like I purchased the universal MHL 1 adapter from Samsung. Last night I ordered the MHL 2.0 adapter which hopefully will work out better as I've seen videos of people playing games without lag.

How'd the new one work out? I am using a Chinese one I used with my gs3 and its perfect for videos but with games there is a fraction of a second lag that makes playing Mario impossible.

Did your MHL cable work for the M8?
I have a cheap one I got for my Samsung s3, and it has an adapter that goes between the phone and the cable and if I don't use that adapter it works fine. I think the Samsung interface has a switched wire that's why it needs it. So not all cables are the same but if the universal one had a removable adapter it will probably work.

How did you guys got it to work? I bought two different MHL 5pin adapters and none worked. The MHL symbol does appear on the phone but there is no image on the TV. I dont undestand and I am getting desperate, does someone has any tips?
Cheers
A "cheap" MHL cable will probably be MHL 1.0, which won't support 1080p (1080i @ 30Hz max rather than the 1080p @ 60Hz that MHL 2.0 supports)
Most MHL cables are also designed for use with recent Samsung devices, which use a proprietary MHL implementation, which is NOT compatible with non-Samsung devices.
The MHL "standard" is almost totally useless, mostly thanks to Samsung creating this confusion, plus the fact that almost no-one ever categorically states what version of the format (1.0, 2.0 and now 3.0) their devices are.
The new Sony devices support MHL 3.0, if they use a standard implementation then their adapters might be the way to go, assuming they eventually turn up and don't cost an arm and a leg.
Anyone with T-Mobile firmware can please confirm if MHL works?
