Galaxy Note 5 4G data heating issue - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi XDA team,
I have this phone for about 3 months now and it's been great for me overall. However starting last week, I started to experience a heating problem. Whenever I'm on data and on 4G connection, my phone heats up crazy, about 43° Celsius and I did not wait to find out how high it can get. This is without doing anything!
So I can say I'm not that really new when it comes to troubleshooting Android phones, I had my fair share of bricking my older phones due to tweaking, rooting, etc. However my Note5 is not rooted, dual sim version but I only use 1 sim.
I already suspected an app that might be causing it, but gsam can't really see what the suspect was (Now I realized, troubleshooting a non rooted phone is harder) so I want to safe mode. Now all my 3rd party eliminated, after turning my 4G on and locked the phone, it still heated. :crying:
So, I tried putting it on 2G or 3G and my phone does not heat up the way it does when it's on 4G, it only comes close to around 36° and this is normal while browsing.
It never did this until just last week, what are your thoughts?
I'm in the Philippines and I'm a Globe user, anyone experiencing the same? Does it have to do with the signal? Screenshot attached about my firmware.

If this is the signal strength then the phone will behave in this manner. Try going to a location with full signal and see if the same issue persists then give it to a service center and ask then reload the firmware.

Happening to me right now. My Note 5 started heating up last monday everytime I use the 4g connection. I think it's not the signal strenght in the area since I've been using 4g/LTE since I got my phone last Dec.
I noticed that I was having a hard time connecting to 4g last Monday (August 22) then my phone started to overheat everytime I connect to a 4g signal. I tried formatting my phone then not install anything but still, it heats up.
I hope someone can help us with this.
I'm also from the Philippines, by the way.

its a known issue among users here....especially after upgrading to MM. It happened to me. If you still have warranty, you can bring it to Samsung Service Centers and based on the similar experiences of others, they will replace your unit with a new one.
Check the FB page "[Temp Group] Galaxy Note5 N9208 overheat and battery issue"

Does anyone tried reverting back to lollipop? Does it fix the issue? thanks

[Q] No 3g

So I am already on my second Bionic after the first one stopped working (completely stock btw.) Just picked up the second one yesterday and have not been able to connect to 3G at all for the last 3 hours. I have done 5 battery pulls, toggled airplane mode more times than I can count, switched between CDMA only and LTE a handful of times and not even once has the 3g symbol appeared at the top. Just the phone signal and when I reboot it a triangle for a few second where the 3g symbol is supposed to be. Any ideas? If nothing else I am bringing this one back after work too and reverting to the D1 until something else comes out.
This appears to be a common problem with the Bionic. I am suffering from the same thing and getting ready to take mine back also, but I dont think it will fix anything.
Some on the forum have tried a fix outlined earlier on the forum that involves pulling your battery and SD card, then sliding your SIM card in and out repeatedly, which theoretically creates a better connection between the SIM card and phone. I have tried this and it did not work for me, but others have had success.
Verizon should extend the 14-day return period until after the supposed October/November patch is released.

Took my Bionic onto the local Verizon store, and the tech guy wanted to try a new SIM card and see if that worked, because I still have a week left of the 14 day period. I was willing to try it, because I have nothing else to loose.
So far, I haven't had any drops, but it has been only 4 hours. however, I would have experienced several by now, so hopefully it was fixed.
I find this odd because only the 4G is controlled by the SIM card, and you said you were having 3G issues?
In any case, my 3G drops sometimes, but a quick airplane mode ON, airplane mode OFF always works. I might take it in and say you had this help your case though, and see about getting mine looked at.

Well, the problem isn't fixed. It started shortly after I posted about the SIM card. This is getting frustrating.
I guess the next step is a new phone.
I'm having the same issue along with horrible data speeds for both 4G and 3G. My down speed for 3G is sometimes as low as 50kbps, and my down speed for 4G is 1.5mbps. That is also with apparently "full" signal strength.
The 14 day return/exchange policy is thursday for me so I'm thinking about going in and having them exchange it. I'll probably also point out the headphone issue since everyone seems to be having that one. There shouldn't be a problem right?

[Q] Losing signal completely

Hello. Have any of you experienced total signal loss? (The triangle in the status bar is hollow/empty). This happens seemingly on random and it "fixes" itself in a minute or so, and I can make calls and have mobile data.
Thanks
I have been also facing this issue lately with different roms. In my case, I loose the network and have to reboot multiple times to get the network up. Sometimes because of this, my phone shuts off. Not sure what is happening.
I flashed Dirty Unicorns a few days ago, and signal would drop every few seconds. Turns out the APN was set for MetroPCS, changed it to T-Mobile IPv6 and it fixed it.
I found my issue is related to my network operator. I am not sure why this happening, everytime I reboot or shut it down, I loose the signal and it takes many attempt's to get a connection. It could either be lollipop bug, network compatibility or issue with the device. Will find it out on Monday.
same here
I've been dealing with this same thing for two days. I have Sprint.
I was on Chroma and traveling. I noticed I lost data during my drive. Once I got to the location, my wife had full 3g and I had nothing. I thought it must have been from dirty flashing an update. I wiped and flashed again chroma with the sprint.zip for apn. Still didn't work. I occasionally would connect to 3g but would lose it randomly for long periods of time. I ended up walking around with my verizon hotspot to have data.
I just flashed stock and I've been waiting 10 minutes for it to try to activate. I'm hoping it will work this time. What a mess this phone has become.
It seems like it's a lollipop bug. I tested my sim on a different phone and multiple times, I rebooted without any issues. I wonder if Google messed with lollipop or is it Motorola.

Yeah, even if there the signal bar gets empty, it doesn't interrupt in incoming or outgoing calls Even mobile data works perfectly fine. For me it comes to normal after 5-6 seconds
For me it does interrupt calls and I don't have mobile data. I really hope its a lollipop issue. I guess they can add that as number 1500 to the bug list...
I am currently experiencing that exact same problem no matter which rom I am using. It is really becoming a PITA. Spent 950$ for this POS phone.
Not a lollipop issue.

Few things to explain if you really want to find out what is wrong. Who is your carrier? Or you running stock or modified ROM? Are you rooted? Giving information like this may help you get to the problem. If it were a lollipop issue, don't you think everyone or at least a lot more people would be experiencing the same thing and posting about it???? Come on guys, be a little more precise when posting issues with said device.

Hi,
WIth Fido in Canada. As some others have posted, if I choose LTE (recommended) in Preferred Network Type, I lost my connection every 15 minutes for 1 minute. If I set to 3g, all is fine. I tried the sim in my nexus 5, doesn't happen.
Tried CM and some other AOSP customs roms, always have the problem. Also tried different radios., same problem. I will definitely retry with the factory image soon, but I have strong doubts it's the OS. I contacted Google, they are sending me a replacement phone.
It's insulting to shell out 950$CAD for a new phone, have it bug on you, then have them ship you a freaking refurbished device. I have a 64GB midnight blue from the first Canadian run (I was one of the lucky bastards, or unlucky!). Then they wonder why people buy iPhones...yes they are very limited, but at least the damn thing works.
Almost every single Nexus I have purchased has given me problems (4-5-6-7-7(2013)). The only one that has yet to show me problem is the 9, but that was a gift for my mother, so she won't even notice if things go bad. I am definitely done buying a Nexus device when it is released...lol
Forcing 3G
Hey Guys,
I tried switching from Euphoria OS to Omnirom but no dice.
I deleted all unused APNs and forced 3G connection, rebooted and it seems to be stable for now.
Hope there's a better fix soon.
Got another nexus 6 from Google...same problem. Every 10 minutes LTE drops. POS....
No problems here.. Sounds like a network issue not a hardware problem.

Note 8 keep dropping connection once a while. Cannot call, text, data.

Hi! Thanks for reading my problem.
I have a tmobile note 8 that I have successfully switched to verizon firmware according to the guide here. It got the verizon boot logo and bloatware just like vzw phone.
It work perfectly after the switch, 4g lte ,call or text all work.
But it will drop after a while of use. It can be a few hours or few minutes. I cannot receive call, cannot access internet, cannot make call...
If I restart it all will become working again for a while. Any recommendation how to fix it? Thanks again.
I have a note 8 (SM-N950F/DS) for about three weeks now. I am using FP on AT&T network. When I just got it, especially while I was moving in the car or train, it would lost the data connection quite often even though showing full bar signal. I had to put it on air plane mode then switched back to reconnect.
Then after 1-2 weeks of use, the issue went away. I don't know it was due to the latest update (I am on Dec security patch now) or some kind of the phone learning my travel pattern.

Interesting, My phone lost it while I m at work... not even moving
For the longest time I thought was alone here. VZ Wireless Note 8 user here. My signal also just drops out of no where. When I look at my screen the 4G LTE upload up arrow is the only one turning up and down. Sometimes this issue will go away on its own after a few minutes or longer. But, randomly out of nowhere this started to happen. Few weeks now and counting I'm guessing it has something to do with a update that I recently upgraded to. I never had this issue when I first had my phone.....
I also have the problem.. Also Verizon branded Note 8.
I see a global Android update coming to possibly address this
From Android Headlines (AH):
"New Android Update For Galaxy Note 8 Improves LTE Stability"
"The latest Android update for the Galaxy Note 8 was designed to improve the stability of the phablet’s 4G LTE functionality as it specifically addresses a bug that occasionally caused interruptions of such connections, as revealed by a changelog published by Samsung earlier this week. The update appears to be rolling out on a global level, with its distribution officially starting on Wednesday, 15 days after the Seoul-based phone maker launched the latest security patch for the same handset."
Starting this month..
Anyone with ideas how to resolve this in the meantime?
I am still having this problem after oreo update.. I don't think I want samsung anymore..
Ok guys those who have Verizon, go to settings, mobile settings and change network to cdma and reset your settings. Turn off the phone, pop the sim tray out, power up ur phone while sim is out and turn off the phone again, this time push ur sim card in and turn on your phone. It should solve the problem of signal being dropped. Good luck.

Network outage issues on Note8

Hi
I have been having issues with my Note8. It loses the cellular network periodically, and doesnt acquire it back. A reboot is required to get the network back but then doesnt last long. I have tried most everything. Listed in order
1. Reseating the Sim / Removing the SD card to check if that was an issue
2. Switching network from 4G to 3G to see if that was the issue
3. Factory reset a few times, including once while not installing apps and letting the phone run with less apps
4. Changing SIMs
5. Changing SIM tray with an S8
6. Using another network sim card
7. Running the phone in Safe mode.
I have exhausted everything that I can have done. Any other thoughts or suggestions?
Phone is within warranty so I can get it fixed, but the issue is that I live in a different country now and they will charge to just take a look at the phone.
Side effect is that while hunting for the network, the phone gets hot and runs down the battery.
I am hoping that there might be a software issue, as the phone does connect to the network for a while before losing connection.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks a lot.
It looks like you have done all of the obvious stuff - it's starting to sound like a hardware fault to me.
Thanks! My worst fear unfortunately.
Was hoping someone might have a software solution or something else which I could try but...
i had same problem with 2 x galaxy s8
after they test for a month and big fighting with those F customer care
they replaced 1 with sealed box and the other one they changed the motherboard which doesn't help , still same problem
i sold both

Question Mobile Data cycling with "No Service"

I don't know how I ended up letting this issue last for so long but it has been happening for a good 3-4 months. It might have been after a firmware update, it might not. But at this point it's driving me coco-nuts.
Phone: Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G (SM-G998B/DS), using an e-sim.
Whenever I try to "actively" use my phone on cellular data (e.g. opening the Youtube app), without fail I will lose all connectivity and the "No Service" logo will show in the status bar. It takes 10-30secons to cycle back to having service, rinse, repeat. I get 2-3 seconds of working cellular data each cycle.
This doesn't happen if I don't try to "actively" use data. The phone holds service, I'll even receive Whatsapp Calls with no problem so long as I don't initiate them.
I've tried resetting network settings. I've also tried switching Network mode from "5G/4G/3G/2G (auto connect)" to the other options.
Any ideas?
bump
It's likely a problem with your e-sim data plan. Have you tried using a normal sim?
I should've mentioned I tested it with a plastic sim from a different operator and the issue remained.
I had this same issue since Jan. A few S21U phones have it and it seems to be some kind of software + hardware issue that affects a small portion of the phones.
The OneUI 4.1 update should fix it. have you got this on your phone yet? If not you should see it soon.
Thread from the Samsung community forum. posts at the end from MattH665 is me, detailing my extremely frustrating ordeal with this issue:

Until you have the update, if you force your phone to 3G (assuming 3G isn't shut off where you are) then you might be able to get by. Mine worked fine on 3g (of course it's slow).

I had tried googling the issue using many, many keywords and was getting stumped with unrelated results.
Your "S21 Ultra reception fail" youtube video is basically exactly what was happening on my phone, albeit a bit faster to recover from the no service status.
And...... I basically got the notification for the OneUI 4.1 update around the same time I was notified of your response. The issue has disappeared altogether.
Thank you for bringing it up with the techs at Samsung. Don't know how long I could've held on to the device in this state.
As a side note to anyone reading this in the future, there was an update to the "Private Compute Services" app available as soon as the phone reboot from the OneUI 4.1 update. The 24th of March patch notes claim "operating system improvements and capabilities. Bug fixes and various optimizations.". That could also have been the fix.
Cheers.
