Recently bought an M7 for cheap off Ebay. Needed a phone to get me through a few months until the 10 drops in price.
Just wanna know what updates I should do. I figure 2 years later, there would be a general consensus on what updates were hazardous or beneficial to the phone.
My main concern is battery life. What android version yields the best? Should I go to kit kat and stop there? Or go on to Lollipop? I've read some issues about the lollipop update that a few m7 owners experienced, but I'm not sure if that's more user error (no factory reset etc) or actual reality.
Make sense? What do yall recommend I update to?
Also, can this be rooted? Will sunshine work? I have the Verizon model.
Thanks

Personally I don't have any issue or battery problem on the latest firmware but I remember a lot of ppl complaining about battery drain on lollipop so you might want to stop to 4.4.3. Since your phone is a Verizon model it bootloader can't be unlocked using htcdev.com. Your only option is to achieve S-OFF first so you can unlock the bootloader and then flash a custom recovery and root. Sunshine will S-OFF and unlock your bootloader at the same time. Better to s-off before updating your phone. You might also need to achieve temp root for Sunshine to work (see here). Btw there might be some alternative to Sunshine if your phone is still running an old firmware, better to check in the verizon htc one section.

Because they are always running. If you take a better look you'll see that they don't eat up more than 10% of battery. If they do, your phone is just lying on your table, and you are not using it. The fact they are on the top of the list is, as I said, they are always running, you can't turn them off. As long as your phone is on, Android system and kernel are working, as opposed to other things - apps get killed, screen off (no usage), etc

Why is then that my m8 before this phone, never had those issues? The kernel and system were never using that much juice (10+%).
And my idle time doesn't seem to be great. Burning 2 to 3% every 20 mins or so. Seems a bit much for me, if it's just sitting on the couch.

My bad. I forgot gsam got updated. If you didn't use your phone it's normal for android system and kernel to be at the top of the list. I don't know about M8, but M7 is like that

What kind of screen on time do you get? I keep my brightness at 30% and I barely make it to 3 hrs by the end of the day. Is that normal? Because that's not great. Or even good.
And what about drain when you watch a video? If I fire up a YouTube video, and I've documented this several times for consistency, I generally lose about 1% battery for every 2 minutes of video. So, say I watch a 12 minute video... I would lose 6% battery life. This normal for you as well? Again to me... Not good.

Wait a minute... 3 hours SOT is not good??? Dude, we have a very old phone with a small battery. 3 hours SOT is awesome! If I want to go through out the whole day, I ususally get 2 - 2.5 hours SOT with about 24 hours off charge. If I push it hard, I can pull almoast 4 hours SOT, but my battery lasts about 10 hours off charge. So, to conclude, your battery life is not bad at all if you consider the age of the hardware, and the software, and battery size

Did much better today. Currently at 10% battery and exactly 4hrs and 30 mins SOT. Course, I had to help it out a bit. Screen brightness is on auto and on minimum. Actually not too dim unless I'm in sunlight or a bright room. Also, I turned off WiFi and data for a few hours when I wasn't using my phone.
I think more realistic usage will be around 3 1/2 to 4 hours going forward. Which I'm OK with. It's only until HTC sends me my replacement for my M8 which took a swim a couple weeks ago.
It's kind of sad though. I love everything about this phone but he battery life. The design is the best of the one series, imo. Feels so good in the hand. And I actually prefer the more squared and blocky design over the curves of the m8. It's way easier to hold onto. And since I'm not into cases, I like that.
Does seem that they took some cues from the m7 to design the 10, but I still wish it was a little closer. Not sure if I'll upgrade to the 10 eventually or not. A bit disappointed they left out the stereo speakers, as I consume a lot of media on my phone. We'll see.
But I love the m7. If they could replicated this design and improve the battery, I'd be hooked.
I get through a day with moderate-light usage, but if I'm on my phone a lot for a day, I am plugging it in about 5-6 hours after waking up and charging it. It's an amazing phone, the hardware has always been one of my favorite things about the device, but the battery is not what it used to be and I'm even running the MIUI 7 KitKat rom which has really good memory management. The days of my M7 are slowly coming to a close though, I managed to snag a Xiaomi Mi4 on sale for $130 that will be arriving in about 1-2 weeks. I'm always going to hold onto my M7 though, it's going to become my car music player.

Nice. I'll probably pick it up once the price drops a bit. I like to buy off contract but HTC is asking for my arm or leg with the 600$ price tag. 3 to 6 months from now, things should be a bit more manageable.

First of all let me say, I got my Nexus One about 2 weeks ago.. Rooted and flashed Desire rom as soon as I got it..
I didnt like it it seemed to run slow.. So I flashed CM 5053 on it.. I can't remember if I wiped between flashes, but I think I did
Anyway, my battery life is totally crap, is there a correlation between not wiping and an improper CM5053 flash?
I have a friend with the exact same setup who gets like 5 more hours than I do
I fully charge to 100% battery drops to like 98% 2 mins after I unplug.. One full day at school minimal use and its like 15% when i get back, thats 9am - 5pm
Help!
PS, i've tried Task managers.. no bueno...

You should always wipe when switching ROMs.

and try an undervolted kernel. I recommend one from kmobs.
I am sure you have read a lot of battery threads already so rather than rehash considering your struggling pretty hard I would suggest going to a rom that is known for better battery life right off the bat. Enomther and the newer version of cm are both better and benefit further from an undervolt. For cm I would consider grabbing the bundle rom with pershoots undervolt already built in. Less hassle and you are already familiar with it. After that at you will be on a less thirsty rom and can start looking at the little stuff like turning off apn in weak singal areas and the rest.
I use enom and UV and my battery life doesn't beat my old G1, but I was comparing it to my friends 3GS and it was on par. I really wish they stuck a bigger battery in these suckers. Battery life is the one thing that's holding me back from going Desire rom. I would absolutely love to run desire on my N1
I agree if you search Google iPhone users also complain me killing their battery in 6 hours flat. so I don't feel too bad about it.
I like to think that my friend kills his iphone in the same time I do with 2x the screen rez, ram, faster processor with 10 widgets running and live wallpaper
Your phone would not of booted if you didnt wipe, No matter what I try, I cannot get a desire to cm or cm to desire without a wipe. I either get a bootloop or am stuck at the bootloader.
hey dude, i had the same prob. couldn't get my battery last more then 6 to 10 hours depending on the use. i read all the threads i could find and did try all the teeks and apps from the market i found. did get some small results, but never nothing relevant. only if left the phone on stand by all day without playing with it i reached 14h. but i mean really not touching my phone. that option simply wasn't for me because i didn't spend more than 600 € to leave it on stand by all day. so, i did the following: went to by at espansys online a official spare battery plus a unofficial dock from "ORA" were i now can charge both the phone and the spare battery - can charge both at the same time, but that's not necessary because since i always have another fully charged battery and only have to change the empty one on the phone. the phone gets a full one and at that time i put the empty one in the charger. after max 3 hours it is fully charged and i can use(after turning the alimentation so it don't. continue charging) the dock to put the phone on it having it were ever i am (work, home). when you are at a secretary it's much easier to navigate through the phones menu having it in the vertical... at least for me. even better is the fact that my official spare battery lasts at least more 1/3 more time giving me 16 to 20 hours depending on use. even that is after the best pro i did get is this: i have no need the restrict me since i use one battery for lets say 10h with the horse one, after that i change. and get more 16 hours (my Last day of use, intense use). spent 96€ in both items. for me outcomes any other solution i read on the threads mostly because i don't want for now to root my phone. it's only my example but i gess yous guys should know about. if i wasn't a knew member i would post some pictures, but you can simply go to the espansys web site and look for "ora cradle for Nexus One" and off course the official spare battery. both very easy to find
i even get around the fact google didn't realleased N1 in Portugal, some don't dispatch the battery to Portugal. also the official home dock don't charge a spare battery. that's all.
Cyan 5.0.5 has really bad battery life for some reason.
Upgrade to 5.0.6 or try Enoms ROM, both of which give me mush better battery life.
Oh and switch to 2G until you actually need fast data (i.e you are web surfing / downloading something). I use a little 2g/3g switch from the market to do this quickly.
OK I can find the answers here most likely but I just wanted to ask questions.
I have had s2 and s3. both rooted. both custom kernels. etc. I noticed vast improvements. the one frankly makes me nervous. should I even root it?
its on telus network in Canada. seems the ones are all the same no? unlike Samsung galaxy series. is development advanced enough to go ahead? I've only had the phone now for less than a week. I really do like it. miss the physical home button. don't care about aluminum design etc. nervous about sealed battery. but the battery life is awesome so far. even on the first charge I got all day and 6 hours of screen. this was with playing with settings. trying speakers. etc. but of course I'm always looking for more.
I'd say rooting my s3 meant I went from all day and 5 hours screen to all day and 6 plus hours screen. definitely worth it. should I expect the same here? I really want a secondary way to wake the device. pushing a touch button or swipe would be nice. will these not work in a dark room? any detrimental reasons why I wouldn't want this?
I mostly want battery life. convince me that I have the right phone. I can still return it I think. but got a good deal on the phone. basically paid 500 for it new. on a plan. 150 off price. and 500 device balance should I decide to pay it out. s4 is still 150 on contract. plus the 500 device balance. I want to like the one I really do. but missing Samsung sometimes. this is not an s4 vs one thread. just help me make the most of this device.
oh and today battery life is not so good. 12 hours up time. 2.5 hrs screen and 40% left. not terrible I guess. but perhaps something is sending it down some.
another question. what root features will do me the most for battery? with s3 I set screen off max to really really low. and that helped. under volt across the board and limit CPU speed. but this is my first quad core. thanks
Don't wanna sound mean, but save yourself the trouble and switch the One for the S4. I've enough experience to know that when you're questioning a phone, asking whether it's the right one for you or not, usually means the mind's set on something else and you'll never be happy with it. If you miss Samsung and you like the ability to switch batteries, why not go with the S4? It's not a bad device, and you said yourself that you don't care about the aluminium design of the One.
If battery life is what you're after, I'd be happy to let you know there are a lot of beefy batteries available for the S4. Check Amazon for instance.
Cheers.

Fair enough. I don't know any battery saving tweaks as I don't pay much mind to that. I just use my device like I want to use it, then charge whenever I see fit. I have a charger at home, next to my bed (which is also conveniently close to my desk) so I'm happy if it lasts 8 hours of medium usage (whenever I'm working)
I just don't wanna see you miserable, mate. I've seen far too many people making the wrong choice of phone (myself included, though not with the One) and ending up hating anything and everything (not literally ).
i agree with theshawty 1st post...
@OP, i think you only want some attention and some words to help you sleep at night... you're not a noob in rooting world, you already know about the difference between HTC and Samsung in battery area, and now you want others to convince you? nobody can...
Try JuiceDefender. It does a good job of managing radios and turning things off and on based on location in addition to some other solid battery saving techniques.
Also, I hear your pain. I love the design and the speakers. I even like Sense for the first time ever. I think I miss the physical home button of my S2 and 3 though. Reaching for the power button is annoying and compounded by the fact that the screen stays off when texts are received.

you should stick with the S4. The battery life on the One will make you hate it later. I had the S4 but switched to the One because I just enjoy the screen of the One more than the S4.

really? i average 30+ hrs with 5-7 hrs screen time which is on par with the s4 i had but the lag was to much. how does a phone with the same processor as the one but overclocked to 1.9 ghz lag when the one at 1.7 ghz doesnt? that is unacceptable for a flagship device

I'm not a noob to rooting. I've done it with almost every phone I've had. I just happen to not have much experience with HTC. I had a desire HD. rooted. but got rid of it shortly after.
like I said if I was so desperate for the s4 I would get it. or i would go out and buy one outright. i saved 150 buying the one, its got rave reviews, and so far save for a few thinga i love it. I said I don't care about aluminum, but truth be told this phone seems much more robust than s4. materials aside. and that's important. if it was a robust plastic phone I would not care.
I've been reading the forums but really haven't had much time lately. thanks for replies

I feel your pain, brother. Came back to Sammy for the Note 4 after 6 weeks with the OnePlus One, where I was getting 40-60 hours! But, my signal in 2nd floor apt of a 3 story was unusable on LTE, and the One doesn't have wifi calling. It looks like even after rooting, freezing, greenifying, I will be lucky to get 15 hours.....But what a beast of a machine this is! Gonna play around with slow vs rapid charge, and keep my 10,000 spare battery with me, and use this til the 64 bit goodness rolls out next summer/fall.

Possibly a defective one? Im getting amazing battery life. Even before I was rooted and had all the tweaks that custom roms give us. I leave my phone off the charger all night and drop maybe 3% over 8hours. Ive been gaming, surfing the web through LTE and Wifi and it seems like I have to really push it to get a solid battery drain.

Turn to 100% dont touch phone check 1hr later see how much battery drain you have.
Let me ask a question, cause its bothering me; I had an N5 and loved it, the no-crap android os is what I want. Unfortunately I had to go through all kinds of hoops and do all kinds of crap to get it to last me a full day with no charge, I changed kernels and kernel settings, etc. and usually had to throw it on a charger to get through the day and periodically would hose my phone due to under-volting which was hit or miss anyway.
I picked up an invite for a 64G OnePlus and it was insane, its like I got double the battery life and did nothing, no kernel, just the stock CM. I lusted for the N6 and got it last week. Man its big, but I'm loving it, but......wtf is the issue with the battery? I'm reading other stories and I have not been able to really benchmark mine, I got the phone Fri. and have not had a normal day yet, but I'm starting to get a little worried. I had wake up notifications, LED blinking and the same amount of wake ups as I usually have. But I don't think theres anyway I'm getting 5ish sot. Why? Whats so different? Is it me or the device? I can live with 4ish sot, nothing less and I don't want to **** around with kernels again. I'm still in my 14 day return, but so don't want to. I'm rooted, custom recovery, don't want to flash a rom (well maybe CM when available) and did not feel a need to decrypt, but maybe thats the answer. Anyway, any additional thoughts?
I just think that the nexus 6 panel is very power hungry. 5 hrs sot is kind of what I have been getting. It kills me that the note 4 has the same processor and same battery yet gets better battery life.

But I figured the Moto like peek feature would be less power then a full wake up like it was doing on the One. I want to keep this phone, I actually did the unthinkable and tried the IP6+, just to give it the benefit of a doubt, I got it on a Fri. morn and brought it back Mon.
Any chance of software fix from Google? I know there is not a clear answer, but I'm wondering what the xda-gods are thinking, hence my questions.

You have likely offended the xda-Android-dogs by your sacrilegious act described above!!! You need to smash up a brand new IP6+ as a sacrifice to atone for this act! You infidel!
:silly:
On a serious note, OnePlus is running a custom OS, with a custom kernel and all the goodies that we Nexus users have to make changes to get. One+ is already running the optimized OS. I'd say that is why it gets better battery life than stock Lollipop.
I have to first tell you I had the SG S4, HTC M7, HTC M8, as my previous Android phones before I
switched to the iPhone 6 plus. As soon s I saw this Galaxy S6 I could't wait to get back to Android.
I really hate Apple and the way you have to use itunes to do anything on the phone.
Received my new SGS6 edge 128 gb sapphire black and it is fantastically built and the perfect size.
That's where all the joy ends. Lets all face the facts, the battery life on this phone stinks. Yes I am a
very experienced Android user and disabled ALL the bloat. Then you have to star disabling features
like VOLTE, wifi, push services etc.... Why the hell would you pay 1,000 for a phone that in order to
barely make a business day power wise you have to disable so many of the features? With that said
and a ton of stuff disabled the phone barely last 12 hours. That is not acceptable. The iPhone plus goes
2 full days (48 hours) with everything on before I have to charge. Before you start asking, yes I did multiple factory
resets, I did the clear cache etc. Like I said I am very experienced with Android phones.
I was so disappointed in the G6 with its sub par battery life. I still hate my iPhone and am looking
for the next Android release (Sony or LG) to see if they are any better. I like the Note 4 but I believe the
international version does not have LTE on ATT.
If anyone has any other Android suggestions please advise me so I can escape the Apple lock.

Have you looked at the HTC M9? I have the M9 currently and it's a pretty good phone. We already have a lot of devs making custom roms and kernels.
I am interested in the s6 which is why I'm looking at this forum, but the M9 is a really nice phone. I'm never satisfied, I have an addiction, a very expensive addiction.
Have you tried charging several times and bleeding the battery out after a couple of days? I noticed it wasn't really impressive batt life..then I disabled the at&t apps, cleared cache from recovery, disabled WiFi scanning, use power saving mode and I can get through the entire day, gym, and charge it at night with around 30% left..I'd give it a week or 2

Sameer,
Yes I did run down to 0 and then charged full, reset cache and there was only a marginal gain.
This is a business phone and I cannot be in the situation of worrying if my battery is going to
die while I am out with customers.
I will monitor this forum to see if any software update fixes the problem.
BTW I did get the Samsung push update and the Google services update.
So frustrating because I really wanted to make this phone work.

Lyall,
I loved the M7 and M8 and battery life was outstanding. The only thing that was
bad was the camera. So I have 2 questions:
1 - How is battery life
2 - How is the camera (I read not very good things about it)
I had the Developer edition on both the M7 and M8.

Battery life is acceptable. I listen to podcasts and do light browsing all day at work and my battery usually drops between 3 & 5% per hour. If I watch videos or play a game the battery drops a lot faster. I would say the battery life is about the same as the m8.
The camera has improved greatly with the new firmware updates from HTC, but it's still probably not as good as the s6. One thing for sure is, the camera on the m9 is definitely better than the m8.

I am confident the S6 is better then the iPhone 6. I love tech so I'm always comparing the top two competitors of this industry
The battery is an easy fix, update google play services to the latest 64bit version and then kill it dead a few times and use the quick charger to charge it to 100%. I am having zero issues making it thru the day and then some.

Designgears,
I did exactly what you are suggesting. The only thing that fixed was the cell standby usage.
Before that update the battery was unusable, so yes that helped.
If I watched any kind of streaming video, you tube, nexflix etc, the battery went down unbelievable.
I had a video conference for 20 minutes the battery dropped 25%. Any stress on the phone the battery
drops like crazy. I really believe it may be a lollypop issue but I cant justify over 1,000 dollars on a phone
that won't last the day. Especially if its not unlocked with software updates few and far between.
Should I try the International version? If anything the updates will be quicker. Do you think without
any bloat ( I did disable all the bloat) will the battery be better?

I only lost 3% battery watching an ep of Futurama on Nextflix and Youtube. A 10min video call on skype only dropped me down 5%. I think something else is sucking your battery dry.

I am giving the G6 another shot, ordered the 128 gb Black Sapphire (non edge) from ATT.
Hopefully will have tomorrow.
I did not like the Edge anyway because of txt distortion on the edges. Will follow all
recommendations on battery life. Thanks to all

I would hit APKmirror and grab all of the updated google apps. That has helped the most.
Thank You
