Signal but no bars - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am using about unlocked and rooted US Cellular phone on T-mobile. It's working and I get clear calls, but I do not get any visual "bars". It's not a major concern, but the OCD kicks in now and then... lol.
Any idea how to fix this?

US Cellular is CDMA and T-mobile is GSM. I am surprised it even works but my guess it's that your phone does not know how to read the signal and or does not have a symbol to use.

Attached is an image showing what I am describing. Also an image showing that I have it at for Global. I also tried Lte/Gsm

I am in 3G.
I have no problems when putting my sim in my tp2. And talking while surfing.
And i am not the only one. No one has givein a reason as to why.
Uh..unless you changed you radio settings to "WCDMA only" you should be able to talk and surf.
It should work. I do it all the time, but it is network dependent.
In case it works on your TP2 i suggest you check your settings.
Hey big guy are you using a t-mobile nexus one on AT&T? Or AT&T N1 on T-mobile? That used to send all my calls to voicemail while I was on the intarwebs

Incorrect. "WCDMA only" is still UMTS/HSPA (3G/3.5G in consumer speak), therefore you still get voice/data at once. I can only conclude that you're under the assumption that UMTS/GSM work the same way EVDO/CDMA does. On an EVDO network, all data goes through the EVDO network, while voice stays on 1xCDMA, because EVDO is an addon to 1xCDMA.
UMTS and GSM are two completely incompatible technologies that only share GSM backend features and a SIM card. The circuits in the phone are separate, the antennas on the towers are separate. You're either completely on UMTS for voice and data (inc. both at the same time) or you're completely on GSM (for voice or data but not both at once. In fact, if you're locked on to a strong UMTS signal, the parts of your phone that handle GSM shut down for power conservation and only wake up when your signal drops to check to see if you'll get a superior signal over GSM. It will do this periodically, but won't stay active for long unless your UMTS is so bad that you won't be able to hold a call. THEN your phone powers up and maintains the GSM radio, while putting the UMTS radio on standby, only powering it up momentarily to look for a better signal.
The only time you have GSM and WCDMA/UMTS powered on at the same time is during hand-offs from one network to the other. That's why staying in areas where you bounce between the two kills your battery so quickly, the radio is drawing roughly twice as much juice as it normally does, plus it's computing which one will do the better job for the moment. Even then, at that time, the phone and its OS will be using only one of the networks at a time, and if it's UMTS, you'll be able to hold a call and surf the web.

TMO on TMO.
Attached are my settings.
I have this on every rom or radio i try.
Hey, sort of same thing just happened to me
in my case using GSM Auto (prl) or WCDMA prefered I can connect to HSDPA but GSM is in emergency calls only, weird.
but I can do both on GSM only (GPRS/EDGE)
Re-flashed to official release of 2.1 same thing.
i use voice and data on my nexus at the sme time every day. it just works. as long as you have a 3G symbol next to your reception bars, then it works.
i dont know what you could have done to break this. can you demonstrate to us what you are doing that is not "working"?

I am connected to 3G network. Call comes in. I can not browse on the internet. While i am on the call i go check settings and i have droped to GPRS. As soon as i hang up i go back to 3G (HSDPA)
Have you ever changed your build.prop file at all in the past? If so that's the problem. Change to hsxpa=2 to fix it.
If not then I have no clue.

I have no problem on my TP2.
I use it often too but today I was unable to it. Hopefully its because my area is being updated to hsdpa+
i think i have the same problem. 3G drops during voice call, doesn't connect during the call. reconnects after the call ends.
stock nexus one tmobile FRG83D
When you have bad reception, that's what happens. Normal and expected. During the call it won't re-negotiate 3G, only when the call ends.

Yeah, that is normal and it really sucks when you're on a long call. Once you lose 3G signal it's gone for good. I don't know if it's a network problem, or the phone, but it should be fixed.

no EDGE on T-Mobile

Is anyone else not getting EDGE in various spots where other phones can get 3G/4G when using the First on T-Mobile? I understand if there's no 3G/4G access, but I'm wondering why my phone sometimes can't even pick up an edge/gprs signal.

have you setup the epc.tmobile.com apn?
if not, then do so as your phone needs it to understand how to connect to the web on tmobile.
If so, then no. Do you get a good voice signal in those areas.

Bionic w/CM 11, orange LTE signal bars

My wife's Bionic is on CM 11; however, it seems to have a hard time staying on LTE - it keeps showing orange signal bars, and when that happens internet is lost.
Is there something I can do to fix this? I heard something about replacing APNs, but not sure if this works for the Bionic, or exactly how to do it.

What carrier? Have you tried reactivating it?

Verizon... and of course it has been activated, she's used it for quite a while. I did try the *228 option 1 and 2, although I have heard that that doesn't work or do anything for LTE phones.
Note: On my Razr CM11 I actually have an APN option under settings... mobile networks; but that option doesn't seem to be on the Bionic.

Try a new sim card. They usually will give you a new one for free at your local official Verizon store.
Has anyone found a fix for this? I experienced this a lot on cm11 m10+ on mine and another bionic and was annoying till I switched ROMs

? Question about Verizon and data roaming

Using my N6 on Verizon, I frequently get messages that I have left my home and dont have data roaming enabled. I don't understand because my note 3 had no problem with Verizon. If I turn on data roaming for data might incur charges from some other provider? On the status bar it used to say either T-CDMA or Verizon Wireless, now it says 3100. My SIM is the same one I used in the note 3. If it matters I am using Liquid Smooth ROM and Franco r2 kernel. Voice seems to work. Any suggestions are welcome.
I'm having the same problem. I have to keep going back to stock to get LTE. I've tried liquid smooth, validus, and bliss pop and all gave me roaming and no LTE. All are their latest builds too. I've also tried popping in and out the sim card with reboots as well.

That is exactly what I am seeing. I'm on WiFi 99% of the time but when I leave the house I have no data.
Good ole Verizon making it impossible to do anything without them approving first. Its probably because Verizon doesn't want people to use the phone on their network before they release it.
They've never been good about nexus though. If you don't recall the whole galaxy nexus debacle
I had the galaxy nexus on Verizon but don't recall them interfering. I do hope that once they offer the 6 that our network access is unfettered, or the community will figure out how to make it work with custom ROMs.

Your roaming goes away? I can't run any ROM without roaming on Verizon...
I noticed this issue on CM based ROMs. Any that are stock based are not effected by this bug, for me at least. I have spent a couple of hours trying different things out that people suggest but none of them have worked. I was able to get 3G to work on liquid, but no LTE. and it reverted after a reboot. I sure hope someone can get this fixed soon.
im running cm12 on my n6 and using verizon and it works perfectly. No issues.
on Bliss Pop the Status Bar icon is NOT roaming but if you pull down and check the tiles it says roaming. I dont think its actually roaming though...LTE Discovery tells me I am still LTE and so does Network Signal Info.
So I think its just in the UI.

You think it is still on vzw when it thinks it is roaming. If I enable roaming data I won't get a huge bill from some provider?

Well, I cant swear to it for sure, but I from the apps I have I am still attached to the same cell tower, so not sure how that would equate to roaming.
LTE Discovery also shows as roaming, but all the other info also shows LTE. Same for Network Signal Info.
IANAL , but if your attached to your normal home cell towers, it would be hard for us to be roaming I would think....and hope
It may have to do with LTE vs 3G. When not on LTE it says 3100 (or 31000?) and that bus when I am "roaming". So confusing. I've gone back to stock rather than Liquid Smooth. I will try an AOSP ROM like Pure to see what happens. Although I'm not missing much on stock.

So all I can add is that I just looked at my bill which ended today. I have been using BP for the last several days at least, and I have 0 roaming charges FWIW YMMV all those caveats....I have a Nationwide Talk 450 Min plan with the standard 2gb data.
HTH, but remember I added the caveats, caveat emptor
Any update?
I have same kind of problem too. Im afraid the bill will goes up by this.
Please let us know if there is a fix for this
Yeah same problem... I don't get why some Verizon users agent having the same problem. Would unrooting and doing a factory reset maybe fix the problem? Frustrated that I can't run a custom ROM without roaming...
Go take a look at your bill/usage online and see if things are showing as roaming. like I said mine looked fine. And it seems like an issue with quite a few roms from understanding.

I just tried out Broken and it has working LTE on Verizon! I'll have to look at my bill, haven't been on a custom ROM with roaming in effect for very long though, so I probably wouldn't be able to tell very easily.
I have a Stock Rooted, Unencrypted N6, with a few custom Tweaks. On VZW have not had ANY issues whatsoever with my service or LTE. Perhaps some custom ROM/Kernels might be causing these issues?
Stock seems to not have the issue. It is said herein that AOSP based ROMs don't either but that is not true in my ecperience. LTE Discovery says 31000 is Verizon Wireless so I believe that even though it thinks it is, it isn't roaming from VZW. I enabled data roaming and switched back to Liquid Smooth and I should be alright. Thanks to everyone for the insights.

Unstable signal reception after January patch?

Hello,
I noticed that even I should have a perfectly good signal strenght it fluctuates quite often. I can't connect to mobile data even in my usual spots. Seems to be unrelated with my internet provider, as nobody around me have any issues.
What's your experience?
Same thing. I'm losing signal for no reason whatsoever. I keep seeing 1x for a signal. I have to use Signal Spy's codes to switch to a carrier. Rebooting doesn't work. Just goes right back to 1x.
Signal Spy seems the only way to force the network to go back to something that connects.
This is only since the January update.

Hope it will be fixed in the next OTA. Anyone else with the same issues?
Which carrier do you both have? I haven't seen the issue with Verizon, but I'm curious if it's specific to a carrier or not? I know they pulled AT&T's firmware into the unlocked version of the firmware in January (Verizon specific to the 6 mm-wave is still separate).

Ok, that is good to know. There is a free app called SignalCheck Lite that will tell you which carrier Fi is currently attached to. This will help tailor down the issue a bit. Thanks!
