Hey guys, I just finished downgrading from Lollipop .6 back to 4.4.4 on the Pure Edition (US) and upgrading to 22.21.11. I couldn't update to .11 from .6. I have a some questions now that my whole process is complete...
1 - Is their a way to root the Pure Edition that would allow me to take future OTAs without needing to downgrade next time? If so, I am wanting to root my phone again, where is the safer root method? I used CF-Auto Root when I rooted back in November.
2- Or is the downgrade/upgrade always going to be necessary on Lollipop on the Moto X (2014)?
3- Can one make an unrooted custom recovery nandroid image by booting to the custom recovery from adb? If so, what is the procedure? I would like to make a nandroid of my phone before I root it, so I can have that custom image to flash back to if I need to update Lollipop the same way again.
Thanks for all your help guys! I really appreciate it! Merry Christmas!
Hello all,
Im totally confused as to how to go about rooting my device c6902. Ive owned a couple of android devices and Ive rooted them all, however....with this device and there seem to be different ways people have rooted from reading the threads and im totally confused, So far I have unlocked the bootloader, and upgraded the device OTA to lollipop .242 (before the bootloader was unlocked), I dont intend installing any custom firmware, just want root so I can use TB and maybe delete a few bloatwares with root explorer and use xposed.
Im confused as to whether:
1. I have to downgrade firmware to kitkat, just to get root, then upgrade back to official firmware?
2. Ive been under the impression that a custom recovery and supersu, is enough to get root. It doesnt work that way on this device?
3. I saw some oneclick root programs that worked on the z1 compact would any work here
Just trying to know more about the phone and understand, so any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Using the guide on the link I just posted, you are not required to unlock the bootloader, unlocking the bootloader without backing up the TA partition can cause problems with your phone.
You need to downgrade to KitKat 4.4.4 with kernel 108, then root it with easyroot install supersu and rootchecker to make sure your phone is rooted, the use NUTs recovery to create a recovery partition, after that search XDA forums for a pre-rooted lollipop flashable zip and install that, and voila you should be on lollipop with root and recovery.
I am not sure about one-click root programs.

Thanks for your help.
I already unlocked the bootloader though. Do I need to downgrade the whole kitkat rom or flash just the kernel? thanks
Figured out. Thanks
Hey guys, the title sais it all!
I have some expirience with flashing roms and custom recoveries and rooting, but on Samsung phones its SO much easier then on Sony. I read through some stuff with flashboot and ADB and what not and I don't really get it. All the ''step by step'' guides are not step by step, their using terms that a normal person wouldn't understand. So I was just wondering if anyone here knew the easiest way to root my Z3 compact running on the latest firmware, without unlocking the bootloader?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/general/how-to-root-backup-drm-keys-t3013343
Downgrade the firmware, as the root exploit only works with older firmware such as 23.0.A.2.93.

Long story short, you can't root using the latest firmware. Follow the guide to root.

Why not flash a pre rooted rom and keep your bootloader intact. Slim 1.3 has a good following and Wajk is a committed developer
Destroying your TA partition just so you can get onto the latest (bug ridden & problematic) deployment seems a bit extreme.
Edit: if you already have MM installed then you will need to follow bilboa1's great guide on how to back up your TA partition and root
This will mean downgrading your rom to an older version, then rooting, then adding recovery, then flashing a MM build with root built in.
It's a long process but non destructive, you'll get to the magical MM but with bootloader intact.

Thank you, one question though, you said that the bootloader will be intact, what about the drm keys? i've read that the DRM keys might go even if the bootloader is locked!

If you take the time to read the thread linked thread above, you'll see that it shows you how to care for your DRM keys so that they can be restored in the event of something untoward happening.
There is an encrypted partition (TA) on your phone that has your personal DRM keys, unique to your phone, they can't be replaced with anyone elses. To open you phone up to a custom kernel or a CM build rom you have to overwrite this encrypted partition, or unlock the bootloader.
Once you have used the old rom exploit to root the phone, you can flash any stock rom without fear. Stock roms are designed to work with the TA partition and pushing a stock rom onto your phone will not damage your DRM keys. That's why I said unlocking the bootloader is a big deal, not to be done just to root a phone. There are less damaging ways to get to an MM build, with all your camera functions intact.

so if i want to root but still keep my DRM keys i must use my phone with stock roms only? that's fair
Thanks again

I just would like to add that you don't have to keep stock roms (like the pre-rooted stock roms) but also stock based custom roms, for example SliMM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/development/rom-slimm-t3359831). There are probably more stock based custom roms but SliMM is probably the only one that is being actively developed. I use it daily and love it.

Yes. Sorry for basically repeating your post, I just wanted to make it a little bit more clear for him, that there is a difference between stock based custom rom and a custom rom
to tell you the truth, i didn't know that slimm rom was a custom rom, i thought it was a stock rom with "more features"
If you don't know what root is etc I suggest you do some research on it before just jumping in without knowing anything about it ?

If I'm rooted on 4.4.4 can I just go to about phone and update it from there and lose root? Or do I have to flash a 6 rom?
I've sort of come to the conclusion that I'd rather have an updated phone than root access at this point. But I'm not sure if I want to start from scratch and re-download all my apps and configure all the settings again.
You will probably need to unroot first. If you are using a rooted stock Rom, you might be able to then update ota. Chances are you will need to reset and wipe at some point though. I'm in the same boat, I want the MM features. However, I will not give up root. I will wait for a custom MM Rom with root or just stick with lollipop and root.
