You can backup apps+appdata using ASUS Backup app.
You don't need to do wipe userdata. Internal memory will be unaffected. I have flashed all pre rooted ROMs from 1.13 to 1.17 without deleting userdata or factory reset. The only annoying thing is that your first boot will show up "Android is upgrading " which will take around 40mins to reach homescreen. Just wipe cache.

System + user apps with data
I am assuming you have stock Rom installed.
If yes, you don't even need to backup anything, if no you will have to backup atleast app data (you will understand when you use the backup app) and restore using the same app after flashing pre rooted firmware.
If I had wiped from recovery, I would lose data, which I don't want as I am too lazy to set up my phone again and again. Also restoring from Backup app takes time. I know I can avoid the "android is upgrading" but I don't want to spend time on frequent restoring, though I always keep a backup of mini militia to save game data since it bothers me:silly:
can I still update to marshmallow if I root my device now?
It's almost useless to root without unlocking bootloader. If you can't flash custom ROMs then it's of no use. I would be happy if you can find a way to unlock bootloader unofficially coz official unlock app does not work

Not really. Root is still very useful for some of us. Some people tend to prefer stock roms and will even upload heavily customized versions of stock firmware. Hell, I've even seen devices with the most hacked together root solution that was hard earned development-wise because it evolved painfully slow as it all revolved around a partial root solution that prevented full on custom or bone stock roms like CM or AOSP.
My point is, if you can't find root useful without a custom rom, then you're doing it wrong.
What do you even do with root?

You can root if you have unlocked bootloader but converse is not always true. We are going to get updates for MM. Its impractical to spend time on patching every official firmware to gain root access. Instead, everyone should focus on unlocking bootloader. The best use of rooting this device would be if we can unlock bootloader with root access. I have been trying to achieve it since the day I bought this phone. Most users gave up but I won't! I quote @LuK1337, "ROOT means nothing unless we can unlock bootloader"
Do you have a pre-rooted fille for the latest Android 6.0.1 firmware???
Thanks!

What if u flash with fastboot the pds partition? And what is exactly the error u get?
If that doesn't work just flash with rsd-lite (latest) and your firmware (latest) and recover it. From then on u can try again.

I assume you have a working adb and fastboot, otherwise u couldn't have installed the recovery.
Your firmware can be found under section E.
When you have downloaded your fimware (always 4.1.2). Extract it and flash the pds_signed or pds.bin. Something with pds.
This can be done by moving the pds* to the directory with the fastboot executable. Then boot into ap fastboot mode and check if your device is recognized by using "fastboot devices". If yes, do the following command to flash the pds partition "fastboot flash pds (pds-file)"
If it doesn't work, post the results. Not only that is says an error, but post the error string.

I looked a bit further into your problem, u may have this problem: this
So what we now are going to do is the following.
First can u enter recovery? and if i can, do u have a nandroid backup. If yes, restore it and just boot up the phone.
If u don't have the above. (all can be found with a bit of searching in the link in my signature)
1. Install RSD-Lite 6.1.x
2. Install the USB drivers for the phone
3. U already downloaded the right firmware (latest and the one from your region)
4. Boot in AP Fastboot and connect phone to USB port PC
5. In RSD-Lite u won't see your device. It doesn't have a system installed.
6. In RSD-Lite search in the above bar for the firmware zip file.
7. Click on flash or something. (there is a RSD-Lite tutorial in my signature in my post)
8. See what happens
9. Report back

Are you sure you installed drivers? RSD Lite should show Fastboot smi S as connected.
If you have installed drivers, and nothing is being detected, then you might want to prepare for several hours of headaches and lots of swearing.
You might have a chance doing this:
You will need to flash a custom recovery. If you can get CWM or TWRP working, you might have a chance to flash a zip.
i.e.
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Since your PDS is damaged, Omar's MotoJB ROM will probably not work, so you will need to flash a clean, stock ROM.
The only stock ROMs I've found (that can be flashed with custom recovery) are:
deodexed Retail Great Britain ICS ROM
odexed Retail Great Britain ICS ROM
Note that going back to ICS using this zip file will not brick your device (at least it didn't for my phone) unless you do it with RSD Lite.
But please don't hold me responsible if it makes things worse for you.
If you manage to flash this and it works, you can then try the PDS fix.
Good luck... :good:

Hi guys, today I am going to share this simple tutorial on how to root without unlocking bootloader of sprout.. Many people asked me how to do so I am here to create a simple tut for everyone..
Requirements
1. Any custom recovery for sprout (I prefer philz http://forum.xda-developers.com/cro...e-general/sprout-philz-touch-v6-57-9-t2887574 )
2. Fastboot files (google for minimal fastboot) and fastboot drivers
3. Supersu update zip (http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu)
Proceedure
1. Install fastboot drivers and fastboot files..
2. Rename the custom recovery as "recovery.img"
3. Place the recovery.img within fastboot directory (where the fastboot.exe located)
4. Put supersu.zip in root of your phone's sd card
5. Connect your android one device to pc using usb cable in fastboot mode (switch off phn and press power+vol up and then select fastboot)
6. Use the following fastboot command
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
This command will not flash the recovery, it will just let your phone boot into recovery and it will work on locked bootloader
7. You will get the recovery menu then. Install the previously downloader supersu.zip from external sd card using the recovery menu.
8. Congratulation, You have successfully rooted your android one device without unlocking bootloader...:good:

thanks
Thank you. Just what i wanted.
Anyone tried? And how to unroot if needed ?
UPDATE : I tried. It works and works like charm. I have created CWM backup of my stock ROM, rooted device and installed xposed also.
You can always unroot from settings in SuperSu - Which essentially removes itself and su binaries.

Hi, if I root my device this way, just to backup some apps via TB, and not modify the system any other way, are you sure just unrooting will be enough to safely apply the Kitkat to Lollipop OTA?
I've read about this new "verified boot" thing in Lollipop, which essentially means if you modify system partition in any way, even if just to add the SU app/binaries, the OTA will fail (where it obviously didn't use to, before lollipop). I'm not sure if this verified boot thing will apply to the OTA for Kitkat to Lollipop too, or just updates From Lollipop to future versions.
(AP did an article just a couple of weeks back, check it out here: http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/1...e-means-update-will-fail-system-modified-way/ )
I have made a backup of Stock ROM before rooting it,so when LOLLIPOP arrives and in case i have changes some system files, i can simply restore the stoock ROM to recieve the updates right???

Good work
Hi, everyone this is my first post.
Though I am not new to rooting, but earlier i used to do one click root..so unrooting was also that damn easy.
Recently i rooted my moto x 2nd gen xt1092 by unlocking bootloader and after flashing TWRP and later using SuperSu.
But here is the catch I didn't take nandroid backup before rooting.
So my question is
1 If I take backup now , will this backup be a rooted backup , means that if in future I flash this backup my phone will be directly boot in rooted mode..?
2 If I unroot using supersu are there chances I may stuck in bootloop?
3 now as I alreday have Twrp flashed how can I get to my original OS I once had? 9(system recovery image)
Plz let my doubts get cleared.
thanks in advance

1. yes, you can do a full backup of system, data, recovery, boot, etc (default configuration of backup) and when you do a restore you have the same root system.
2, sometimes, you have a 50% of possible failure, the best option is flash the stock system files and after do a ota update or similar (never do a downgrade, can kill your phone(hardbrick))
3. Via bootloader (down volume button when you turn on the phone)
Write or copy this lines on bootloader mode (in the same folder where you have execute the command for your unlock code for the unlock of boot loader)
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot reboot
The recovery is on image of StockRom.

1. yes, you can do a full backup of system, data, recovery, boot, etc (default configuration of backup) and when you do a restore you have the same root system.

Thanks cyke31.
My two doubts are absolutely clear.
I have a doubt regarding the 3 point.
where I will find that recovey.img file?
And after flashing that recovery.img file will I get back to my stock rom, that I had before TWRP was installed ?
Can I take OTA updates?
Will TWRP get uninstalled ?
your english is pretty good..
I am Indian ....so don't worry . I'm not grammar NAZI..

I recommend downloading the stock rom and do a clean install , because any change you've made in system, will generate bootloop...
Here the links to the Rom (you must download The xt1092 version)
Firmwares 4.4.4 hasta 5.0.X: https://mega.co.nz/#F!TkIwRTjR!m7W1V35qfLBiiUargAx1vg
Firmwares 5.1 y 6.0: https://mega.co.nz/#F!ow8igZRL!Z7vmN8GOpez2bVMYDvEKkg
And them install via guides on xda.

so its better to flash system files than flashing recovery.img
though I'm in no mood to unroot my device. just wanted to know the consequences. I'll do normal backup of my current rooted rom. If in case anything happens I'll flash stock system files from motorola website.
Thanks for the info.
Xposed is the reason I rooted my device. Heard that is better to take nandroid backup before installing Xposed.

Hello everyone,
I'm in a little trouble. I need to install custom recovery on my Xperia SP C5302 but I have no PC.
How can I install TWRP ( preferred ) / CWM/Philz on my device ? Is there any way ?
Thank You.
Note : There's a cyber cafe beside my house. But all their computers are running Windows XP.
If there's no way to install without PC then can I be able to install custom recovery on my device with Win XP ?
Thanks again.

Most likely soft brick. But who knows, hard bricks even happen when they never touched anything for some people.

okay. Is there any way to install TWRP without PC then ?
or any custom recovery. philz, CWM anything
Install a terminal emulator by Jake Pelvich from Play store.
Extract the official TWRP img from the TWRP fota zip, or, if you already downloaded an official img, put it into the root of your internal storage.
For ease of access, but still mnemonic, rename the img into "twrp.img"
Open your terminal emulator, and enter "su" and run. This will make the terminal to request root, as you're elevating the shell into root.
Now, we "dd" the TWRP image into your FOTA partition. Copy and run the following:
Code:
dd if=/storage/emulated/0/twrp.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/FOTAKernel bs=4096
Reboot to check if recovery is accessible after hitting volume up when LED lights up

What ROM are you using? You need a ROM that can boot a FOTAKernel recovery, and not all of them can (especially stock based ones, since stock by default doesn't allow this).
Ditto.
If you are not using a ROM that supports booting from TWRP, then I can't suggest a method to install other recoveries without a PC.
I do not say it is impossible though, but it'll take a lot of brain power, and moderate understanding of shell scripting in order to reverse engineer the other recoveries provided in the dev subforum.

I tried with Terminal Emulator and it seems okay. But I can't boot into recovery. Tried a lot of process. Doesn't work. Now can I install TWRP with pc ? or I need to flash my stock back to install from PC as I replaced my stock img file ?
Again if I flash stock now, will my bootloader be locked again ?

Like already explained by Tomoms and me, you need a ROM that supports booting recovery from the FOTA partition in order for my explained method to work. You didn't also tell us which ROM you are using.
No, you dont need to flash your stock back. Leaving the FOTA partition replaced does no absolute harm at all.
If you flash stock, your bootloader will still remain unlocked. In order to relock, you will need to explicitly relock it, by using the relock bootloader option provided by flashtool. If you backed up your TA partition, restoring it will automatically relock your bootloader.

As the bootloader isn't unlockable yet, any flashing of the recovery, kernel or rom will most likely end in a brick. This may not be recoverable...

But that modyfied rom too much power consuming! Guys, if you got stock ta1000, dont even think of that damn ta1003rom.. it got native 6 cores active all the time while stock got 2 cores active in stanby.. and no ota update is sad. I think i will try stock ta1025 from nokia 5 instead.. or wait a bit for some new mods
