Camera issue Android N Preview 3 - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
I recently installed the last preview of Android N on my Nexus 6 and noticed an issue, I want to share with you and see if you also faced it and, maybe, if there is a fix for it.
When I open the Google Camera installed by default with the preview 3, I have no button to switch from back to front camera, so no selfies possible, when this was working with MM before.
Any idea? Any help?

What do you see to the left of the camera shutter button?

I'm on Preview 3 and the stock camera and I have the camera switch icon to the left of the shutter button.

Mines there too. Maybe reflash the ROM? Was it a clean install?

Mine was missing as well. I rebooted and it returned.

[FIX] Possible fix for CM 6.1 Camera FC issues-MERGED 20101122

The fix below has been merged into the nightlies!! expect to see it on the 23rd.
If you're impatient, you can install a compiled version of the apk from recovery...
---------------
The camera issue is for ALL of cyanogenmod, not just us dinc users.
I've grabbed some of the patches that are being worked on and put some of my own work into it.
Please let me know what you find.
For me, it crashes almost every single time if I use continuous focus, but it's fine with infinity.
Screen off and on works without FC, but the camera is hard coded to not allow recording with screen off.
1. Backup
2. Flash aosp-camera-fix-v1.0.zip
3. reboot..
flashed
Just flashed, off to a meeting but will report back shortly. I would love to be able to shoot video in 720.
in to see the responses
no issues
No FC in continuous or infinity mode. Shot about 10 minutes of video in both. Screen off then on kills recording. Still no 720p recording mode though (not that this was supposed to fix that, I was just hoping).
Recap: No camera/video FC in either mode (continuous or infinity)
Thanks for this
...
To get 720 p.. Make sure quality is set to custom and file type is mpeg4, then it should show up in the settings.
Someone alert camalus!
I will be flashing this after work today! Thank you!!!

hi seanzer. on cm nightly build #161 - issue: when on videocam, and i turn off the screen (recording or not), when you unlock, the videocam becomes almost half the size of the screen (with the preview screen almost a quarter the size, and is now on the lower left), and it's unresponsive.

Same thing happened on my friends moto Droid 1.. i think the latest commit to the camera broke it. Try a nightly before the 24th... which only contains my camera fix. I haven't had time to test the latest nightly yet, but I will have to investigate more what happened..

anyone know? is this the same with all aosp roms?.. the camera just isn't as good as the htc cam.
Fixed my Nexus One
Installed on CM 6.1 on a Nexus One, fixed the camera for photos, haven't tested the videos.
Symptoms: Camera keeps crashing after a few shots. Force Close the application and if I tried to run it I only got a blackscreen until the Force Close window appeared.
It also rebooted my phone one 2 occasions.
Installed using Rom Manager:
Install from SD
Selected .zip
Backup Rom (Yes)
Wipe (NO!!!)
Everything went smooth.
Now I'm taking pictures, modifying settings, Touch Focus, everything seems to work.
Took 20 pictures in a row and fast.
Thanks for the fix
I had high expectations on this one, I tried it but I still get FC on the camera.
I have a Magic and I am running the CM 6.1 Rom

If you look at the resolution of the 8mp wide setting on the stock sense camera, it's not actually 8mp. It's really the same as 6mp wide on the CM camera.

How to enable camera widget on 4.2

Simply change the DPI to 210 and voila you got the camera if you swipe to the right from the lockscreen.... you also have to deal with the phone ui then... not something I would do because of that... just making you know....
Very interesting that Google simply lock the functions that are already on the system... why? At least we should have widgets on the right then...
Other annoying thing is that if you change the DPI everything go smaller but you don't get the tablet UK.....

If you mean that you don't get the tablet ui even if you go down to 160 or so, then that might be expected as it seems google is wanting to do away with the so called "tablet UI"...evident since even nexus 10 has phablet ui.

Yep, but then why keep the phone ui in the same as the phablet? and why hide the camera? is not that it isnt installed, is just hiden....
It's possible that they are intentionally not enabling the camera on the Nexus 7 because it doesn't have a rear facing camera. Just a guess but it makes sense. The camera can be integrated into applications that make proper use of the front facing camera (skype, etc...) but it's not real practical to use a front facing camera on a tablet to snap photos of anything other than yourself and Google might not want to imply that it is.

Ok , but why don't they take it off the system instead of hiding it? Seems to me that the software is the same as the n4... gives the impression to me that they are just lazy to not create its own software for the n7...

The camera app is there, but hidden. I noticed this in Evernote when I went to create a picture note it asked if I wanted to use "Camera" or another camera app I have installed. I chose Camera and it opened the new camera app, minus the video/photosphere toggle.
They make the camera app available for programmatic use by third party apps. An app can turn it on and take a photo or video. In other words developers don't have to write their own interfaces to the camera. I am actually a developer and just checked out the API calls that do this. This is exactly what the apps we use to turn it on do.

[Q] Front Facing Camera Upside Down/Inverted

I'm having an issue with my Nexus 6 Front Camera inverting while in certain 3rd party Apps. Works well with the Stock Android Camera App but when I download certain 3rd party apps the picture is upside down. Even while using Google Hangouts video call and other video messaging apps the camera is inverted. It's not limited to just camera apps when I use anything with attach a photo/take a photo the camera is upside down any way of fixing this.

Same here. I use a 3rd party app called Battlecam and it uses front and rear camera's. The rear cam is just fine but the front facing cam is upside down everytime. I have a Nexus 7 with android 5.0 and it works fine on that device. I'm thinking this is nexus 6 strictly.
Anyone else?

I got my Nexus 6 a couple days ago, and have noticed that on Snapchat and Hangouts the front-facing camera shows upside down. On Snapchat, it even utilizes the accelerometer to ensure that no matter the rotation, my face is always hanging down from the sky. Very annoying.
Anyone figure this out? I plan on factory resetting my phone later today and starting from scratch to see if it's a problem incorporating settings from my old phone.

Hey please let us know if performing a factory reset did anything to fix the problem because like you I'm annoyed with having my front camera face upside down. All apps should work properly front camera or not this is disappointing because this is a new device and this should not be happening.

These type of issues usually occur with new devices running the new OS - aka 'initial bugs'
El Goog will get these sorted out (make sure you put in a bug report)

Factory reset fixed the issues I mentioned in my post. I suspect they were caused by importing data/settings from my previous device, which had a different version of the OS.
I'm having this issue, and I didn't import any settings from a previous phone. Is this a software or hardware problem?

Nexus 6 portrait orientation is 270 instead of 90
The developers of these apps assume that the orientation for portrait mode is 90 degrees. From some reason on Nexus 6 it should be 270 degrees. Developers of camera apps should follow the code example at: http://developer.android.com/reference/android/hardware/Camera.html#setDisplayOrientation(int)
Yup, for the most part - it isn't your phone, its the app in question.

I use an app called Open Camera, and have no issues.
I "fixed" this problem by uninstalling the updates on my Google Camera app. I guess something in one of the updates inverts the pics taken. At least, this was the "solution" on my Nexus 6. I re-installed the latest update to the camera and the problem came back.

[Q] Big Camera problem - Xperia V

Hi!
Camera in my Xperia V does not work properly. It can take pictures only in sunny day, in the dark does not turn on. I tested all the official systems (including 4.0.4 4.1.2 4.3) and CM11, everywhere the same bug. In the pictures , where a very strong light, purple stripes are visible (see the Attached Thumbnails). I thought it was hardware damaged, so I bought the camera, but unfortunately nothing changed
So anybody has idea what is wrong?

Interesting is the fact, torch turns on using flashlight applications from google play, but each of them get freezy and FC after 1-2 min. When I turn on the default application for torch in custom ROM (like Carbon, Lovins) everything is ok.

Try flashing stock 4.1.2 firmware using flashtool and do a complete wipe during the install (tick all three boxes on the right side: data, cache and something which I don't remember the name of). You might've messed something up when flashing custom roms and flashing back the stock one should fix it. Also check if your camera lens is scratched/cracked. If none of that helps. I'm afraid it's a hardware fault then. :/
Btw: I remember people talking about the camera bug which you have in 1st picture in some 4.3 rom (not the latest one). But it's the first time I've seen a bug like you have in 2nd picture.
Camera lens look perfect on both camera modules. I am surprised that after the exchange of the camera is the same problem.
I'll try flash tomorrow or later (you know, New Year) and and I'll answer.

Proper Working Gcam is Here:

Hello there.
I've been using Gcam from past a year on my phone.
Till today, @the_dise, @Arnova8G2 and @Parrot043's Gcams have been working tremendously awesome on Nokia 6.1 Plus.
When checked, parrot's gcam have more features on comparing with the other 2. And at the same time, some of you might get annoyed after capturing images, because, parrot's gcam create some Halos and ambiance no matter how much you change the settings.
One thing that is common in all the Gcams is that: SlowMo!
It works!
7FPS!
Links:
Parrot: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/f/changelog1066/
(Halos:/)
Arnova: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/f/changelog1072/
(Manual focus doesn't work. It focuses on its own)
Dise: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/f/changelog1062/
(His Gcams are near to stock!)
Hi
I have 2 questions
1. Is your device's bootloader is unlocked and you have custom rom installed?
2. Is your phone updated to android 10?
Every gcam don't work on android 10 in this device (shutter button doesn't work & solid green pict)
Not working after few clicks
Hope it helps.
Cheers!?

That problem exists. As the new update on Nokia 6.1 plus has changed the vendor after Android 10.
Turn off the battery optimization for the app on the settings for better performance. Remember that, the app might drain battery. Neglect it.
Usually, it stops clicking images untill you reboot the device.
Edit:
Gcam stops clicking images only if you preview images no sooner you capture the images. You need to wait till it completes processing(and that can be seen in the notification bar). If you preview the images after processing, there will be no issues.
How it helps, cheers!
Use this camera, everything is working.

You clicked the preview button no sooner you capture the image huh? It happens only if you do that.
You're supposed to wait till the image processing is done and it can be good on the notification bar. If you don't wish to wait for 5-6 seconds, then I'd recommend you to TURN OFF the HDR mode and then capture the images so that you might not need to wait.
Reboot your phone once, gcam starts working again now.

Have you turned off the battery optimisations? ?
In Nokia phones, it has to be turned off. I dunno much about your device tho!
But, it doesn't usually cause on my phone but yeah, when you capture too many photos at once, it stops capturing until rebooted. You've to wait for atleast 10 secs to capture next shot unless burstshoot
