Hello everyone, today i had an idea for a xposed module, that would be very helpful for people that have phones without a native HD resolution, like me (800x480).
So here is the deal: i thought of a module that could emulate an HD resolution on the YouTube app, therefore, allowing people to watch videos with quality above their native resolution. I need that because i think 480p on my phone (that is HUGE) looks awful, maybe because the screen ia huge, i dunno...
If it's possible to do so, or if anyone has the skills to do such a needed module please do!!
And thank you.
Greetings
Rusty
It won't be useful. You have a 480p screen. Watching a 720p video on a 480p screen is just wasting your bandwidth.

Yeah, it will be useful, for one simple reason, 480p on a screen this size looks just horrible, and no its not wasting my bandwidth, because with 480p on my phone on YouTube, my phone buffers a 40min video in like 5-10sec. So 720p on my phone's screen will make a big quality difference (will be more pleasing to the eyes) and it won't matter on my bandwidth.

What is the purpose of playing a 720p video on a 480p screen?

He thinks that bigger screen = bigger resolution. It'll not work, there'll not be any difference.

Less packet loss, therefore more quality. I can easily notice some packet/frame loss by quality decreases along the reproduction of the video, particularly in some more "fast paced" videos i watch, mainly in drift videos and rocket league videos, that are uploaded at 1080p 60fps.

Since when does packet loss have anything to do with the resolution of a video? Care to explain that?

I can´t explain very well, but have you ever been watching a stream on twitch (on your phone) on High quality, not Source, HIGH, and when the video starts moving faster (camera pans/jumps) the quality degrades? No? Then you can never understand what im talking about. That is waht im trying to fix....

Solution: update your device to a newer device with a higher resolution
It is not possible to make a display with a given resolution to show stuff with a higher resolution.
Basics: the screen's resolution is determined by its pixel, which means that there is a maximum resolution available for a given device. A higher resolution will be downscaled or pixel will be merged as not all provided pixels can be shown on that display. Simple as that.
Such a module already exists. It's called YourTube. Just search for it in the installer or on the website.

Seems like some people managed to play 1080p on iPhone 4.
SGS has almost the same CPU with better GPU and option for overclock.
What is the reason that is preventing us from playing 1080p? Not good enough app or something else?
1080p on a 4" screen? no thank you.
We just seems to be needing a good codec to play 1080p. So it should just be a software limitation unless the GPU is capped at 720p!

I would never watch 1080p on 4'' screen (even though some people would)
I'm just curios about the hardware.
@Prankey,
I guess SGX 540 can play 1080p if SGX 535 can.
I'll make a wild guess here:
iOS has all the software needed for full hardware acceleration while Android don't.
How is this a development related question?
And I thought galaxy can play 1080 without problems (didnt try though, as its very stupid).
so iPhone display is 960 x 640 pixels?
1080P is 1920 x 1080 pixels
unless it can output HDMI, seems pretty pointless to me.
The screen resolution is 800x480 anyway so the extra resolution does not benefit you at all. It's just a minor convenience to avoid converting the video but you're wasting battery power to decode the video and a lot of space. 720p is enough of a battery and space waster.

1080p isn't even listed as a file which can be played. You can't even upload it via iTunes, so there is no official hardware acceleration built in for 1080p.

We can use microUSB to HDMI and we have DLNA. So it would be useful to us. Anyway, as I've already said my interest is about hardware capabilities not watching full HD on my phone.

You still have to convert the video though for these devices still cause h.264 codec support for mobile devices don't support all of what the codec can do. It's also wasted bit rate as well. It's better to have a lower resolution video with a decent bit rate then it is to have a video with a massive resolution but not enough of a bit rate to smooth out artifacts. this resolution race for videos on mobile phones is a tad stupid.
Rock player plays 1080p for me.
The Video I tried was a bit choppy though but acceptable.
(I guess about 15-18fps). I only tried one Video wich I accidentally loaded on my device.
As far as I now Rock player does not use any GPU acceleration though pretty impressive what this little CPU is capable of.
Definatly plays full hd better then my atom netbook.

I wasn't talking about hardware accelerated 1080p playback. I was talking about how everything in iOS is adapted to support as much of the hardware features as possible, while Android is not adapted to support the SGS hardware in any other way than Samsung just tossing in (semi)working drivers.

1/ there is no point, resolution-wise
2/ with iphone there is a VERY limited range of file formats you CAN actually play, so you will spend half your life converting to a format that apple can control. Most my 1080p movies are mkv format, a format that works on Galaxy S but not on iphone. All my SD movies are Divx and Xvid, again, not compatible with iphone.
Mark.

Anything that can be done on the iphone 4 can be done on the galaxy s, just needs the right software to be made.
The only difference between the iphone 4 and the GS is the software, the screen, and the galaxy s having one generation newer gpu
Anyway what's the point in this? sd cards have a 4gb filesize limit, 1080p would waste so much battery for no benefit over a 720p file
technical spec yes
real life usage, not so great
wireless N is what i use for my home teather, yes it "works" but load time is horrible, as well as the random cut offs, then waiting for the load time again.... it's a pain in the aussie
it's much more convenient to first copy the entire movie into the hard drive via wireless N, then watch it
but that defeats the entire purpose of streaming a movie
From the website:
"SVP allows you to watch any video on your PC file with frame interpolation (like you can watch it on high-end TVs and projectors). It increases frame rate by generating intermediate animation frames between existing ones to produce very smooth, fluid and clear motion. The technology is well-known for a while ("TrimensionDNM", "Motion Plus", "Motionflow" and others), but now it's available for free to PC users with simple GUI and just a couple of mouse clicks.
SVP provides GPU acceleration and it's possible to watch FullHD 1080p-video recalculated to 60Hz in real-time with mid-range CPU and almost any GPU hardware.
SVP actually is not a video player itself, but it enables almost any player to play smooth video."
I've been using this for a few days now and have been blown away by it. The initial kneejerk reaction when using it for the first time is that it's a little odd. We're so used to seeing video played back at the same low frame rates that we've had for decades that it takes a little time for the brain to adapt. For the first couple of hours of using it myself i had no intention of keeping it installed. After the second day of using it you couldn't pay me to go back to watching low frame rate video again! It's a night and day difference.
I could go on being effusive but you really need to try it yourselves to make your own minds up. All i would say is use it for a couple of days. You'll be impressed. The SVP package includes, and is preconfigured for MPC-HC. It does work with other players too though. I would recommend installing the full package using the default settings, ensuring that you've removed any other instances of MPC, Codecs and Filters first. And you do need reasonably decent hardware to run it well too.
Playing back a 1080 video uses 40% on all cores with my 3770K and 25% on my GTX570. I for one am actually glad to have something to run on a daily basis that justifies having spent money on good hardware though. Today i've watched a selection of HD movies and sport and each time it's taken my breath away how life-like everything appears. The clarity and immersion is incredible.
Here are some more links about SVP and HFR video:
Guru3D
Short Wikipedia entry
Interactive Demo
Demo Videos
Here are two short clips from Sons Of Anarchy. The first is normal framerate and the second at 60fps:
Original
HFR
The difference should be immediately obvious watching those two clips. If it's your first time watching HFR playback you might have experienced what people call the 'soap opera effect'. I know i did. That's what takes getting used to, but you soon do. It's LFR video that looks wrong to me now!
The flip side to using Frame Interpolation is artifacting. I found it intolerable with the default SVP settings, but setting 'Artifacts Masking' to 'Strongest' in each Profile has almost completely eliminated it for me. I might notice it once or twice during an entire movie only using that setting. Beside that, you might want to select the option for running SVP at Windows Startup and disabling the SVP On Screen Display too.
It's a profound change. James Cameron and Peter Jackson say it's the future of film. I would agree. Give it a go and see for yourselves.
Sounds pretty awesome. I'll give it a try and see if I like it.

I'm watching live sport at normal framerate right now and it looks like a stuttering, jittery mess. Once you go HFR, you can't go back.

I think I read somewhere, that when compared to video, we see at 30fps. Not saying that we DO see at 30fps, but that's what the video equivalent would be. That's why watching 29.95fps (most) movies they have a natural feel to them, and with something like The Hobbit with 50fps, most critics hated it, and said the 25fps version was much more pleasant to watch.
Yup Hobbit was 48fps..they are critics after all. I thought higher fps in 3D=less strain.
Anyway, I tried reading about this whole frame rate and eye thing yesterday night and gave up. Glad i didn't take up medicine in college...

The human eye doesn't see in still frames, The reason why shooting at 24fps became standard was because first, it was just high enough to give a sequence of images a continuous look, while second being not so high that it became too expensive in celluloid costs.
As for The Hobbit. Remember the kneejerk reaction i mentioned? After a century of film being played back at 24fps we have become used to that. Of course it looks a little strange at first when seeing HFR for the first time. For most people, watching The Hobbit was the very first time they had been exposed to it. A lot of people conceded that by the end of the film they had not only grown accustomed to it, but also didn't notice it any more. It took all of a couple of hours for the soap opera effect to disappear for me too, as it does for everyone. As i said in the OP, you have to use it for a day.
Have a look at the Poll results on CNET. Most people liked the HFR version of The Hobbit btw:
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-33199_7-57559560-221/poll-did-you-like-the-smoother-hfr-hobbit/
As i said before, i've used SVP all weekend on a variety of media and it is amazing. Once i had to watch something at normal speed after being adapted to HFR it really exposed the difference. LFR is a stuttering, blurry mess in comparison.
HFR is the future. James Cameron has already committed to it for his future projects. Most good quality HDTVs are released now with different implementations of Interpolation that people are getting used to using. SVP just brings that ability to the PC/HTPC. The same software also makes it possible to re-encode any movie you have made to 60fps ready for uploading or sharing, but improving the quality of them. Great for fast moving gameplay videos. The package also includes SVPTube, a nifty little app that lets you play back YouTube videos in real time with HFR applied to it. Pretty cool!

Well that's my question. Does the YouTube player have the 1440p option? On my note 4 the highest option available is 1080p but there is a hack where changing the build prop to 5.0 allows the 1440p option. I would prefer not to do this though as it's being reported it breaks s-note

Any particular reason? Your screen is "only" 1080p, so I have no idea what you want to accomplish with this...

I solved by installing OGYouTube 2.7

How can it be "solved"? You can't display the resolution so what's the point?!

I'd assume it would work similar to PC's. I only have a 1080p monitor but I can still watch 4k videos on youtube and they actually tend to look quite nice. No idea if it would be worth on a 5'5 display though.
Do you want to zoom?
1440p, 4k videos are looking better on 1080p screen, because there is less video compression artifacting. And you can watch 4k 360 videos too! If you know xposed, then use the YouTube+ module.
It's kinda pointless since our screen is 1080p. It won't display more pixels than it's capable of

Yeah, because the hardware in your phone is immune from creating those video artifacts...
Until I see a comprehensive, professional comparison article about the results of the YouTube/Google downsamlping algorithm vs the hardware solution in the 821 CPU I'll take that claim with a 4K sized grain of salt. But whatever, it your bandwidth and power to waste.
