Has anyone noticed an oddness with the stock messaging app on the P9?
When I send out a group message, say to 2 or 3 of my friends. When they reply to the message, their messages come separate as individual messages and not show up in the original message thread that was sent.
I had the EVA-10(Chinese dual sim 64gb) but got rid of that and got the L09 Int'l Unlocked single sim version. Both are doing the same thing.
Just wanted to see if anyone knows if there is a solution to fix this?
Also, I didn't have this issue on the Chinese version but I am having it on this Int'l Unlocked version. The stock messaging app is giving me this error when I want to text someone. 3rd party apps work but the stock is not allowing me to text people within the app. If I go under contacts and choose to send a text through the contacts app with the default messaging app, it works just fine but it won't work from the messaging app directly. Really odd.
Thanks
Huawei P9 stock SMS app issues - need group MMS fix
I confirm having the same issue with the unlocked international (EVA-L09) version of the Huawei P9.
You can fix the texting individual people by reformatting your contact numbers into appropriate international format with Playstore app "Twitch 2.0". That worked great for me and avoided the need for any root access.
I still need a fix for the group MMS issue. All me sends to/from a group always come through individually.
Hope we find a fix!!
Yes I noticed the invalid number issue had something to do with only US numbers. Every int'l number I had in my contacts would work just fine. All I had to do was to put a +1 in front of the US people and that fixed the issue but like you said no solution for the MMS issue at the moment. I am hoping with @paulobrien getting a ROM out soon, we might get our issue resolved. I will shoot a tweet out to Huawei too but doubt they will even respond.
Any update on this issue? I'm experiencing the same problem and was hoping someone had figured it out by now.
I know this is an old thread, but was hoping someone found a fix for the group MMS issue? I have a P10 and the same thing is happening. Huawei support was no help.

Hello there. At&t user here. I have been using at&t for a while and can't switch carriers, and was wondering if anyone could solve this dilemma for me.
I need long messages to get merged to one message for the recipient, which would probably best be suited by having them converted to mms.
I was wondering if the moto x has this feature, as it is the one phone I am looking at on at&t, or if anyone knows an app that can do this, and if I could install this on the moto x unrooted.
Handcent for example, merges them into one and converts to mms, but it needs the sms to be at least 3 sms's long before it does that, so that ones that are between 160-320 characters still get split. I know that gosms doesn't allow this either. This is work-related, so if anyone could help me I would be forever thankful.

I have a stock, unrooted moto x on verizon, but I imagine the settings in the stock messaging app would be the same. There is an option to use MMS for Group Messaging that states "Use MMS to send a single message when there are multiple recipients". Maybe just adding your own number along with the intended recipient's and sending the long message as a group message would be an easy fix? SImilar to copying yourself in on an email.
Edit: Just tested this idea and it works. I sent a long message to myself and another recipient and it automatically sent as a single MMS. Did not receive split messages on either phone, so this could be a workaround for you.
Hello,
I am using a BLU Vivo XL with metroPCS service and I am having a two MMS issues: 1) Every MMS is duplicated, and 2) MMS service is very unreliable over WiFi. Also, I have 1 sms issue where my messages from some contacts do not thread/aggreagate correctly. For example, I send a sms to ContactA and when they respond, it is in a new thread, I can then continue the conversation in that new thread.
I have updated my APN information to the t-mobile settings. I have had a "phone reset" by a metroPCS CSR over chat. Any ideas on how to rectify these issues?
Similar Problem
I have a similar problem on AT&T. I get duplicate group messages while using google messenger. It only happens with group messages and is fine with normal MMS. Sorry I was unable to help, but you are not alone.

I'm trying to use my BLU Vivo XL with Chomp Messenger (AT&T). It seems to work other than it won't play any notification sounds no matter which one I choose. It's not blinking the message led either.
I was having the same issue on T-Mobile, my solution was to go through each contact and make sure there were no spaces in any contact numbers. Example: 1 (123) 456-7890 would give me problems, but 1(123)456-7890 worked just fine.

Exactly the same with me on AT&T. Any time someone sends me an MMS, I get 2 pictures instead of just one. Crazy. I also get the issue where I send a SMS, and then when they reply, it starts a new thread instead of appearing in the one I just sent. Weird. Let me know if you figure this out.
I seem to have found the CAUSE of this problem, but I have yet to find a solution. I had the same problem as the OP when receiving MMS. Instead of getting one picture, I would always get 2. No matter who was sending to me. Also, as the OP stated, "messages from some contacts do not thread/aggreagate correctly. For example, I send a sms to ContactA and when they respond, it is in a new thread, I can then continue the conversation in that new thread."
I remembered that when I got this phone, I replaced the stock messaging app with Google Messenger (I thought the stock messenger was lacking). I had a hunch that the 2 messaging apps were somehow conflicting with each other. So I deleted google messenger and had my daughter send me a picture. Boom. Problem fixed. I received only one picture from her using the stock messenger app. So I re-installed the Google Messenger app from the play store and had her send me the same picture again. This time, I received TWO pictures. I have no idea how to fix this behavior as you cannot "disable" the stock messenger app. I probably could try a different messenger app other than Google Messenger, but that's the one that I like. Anyone have any ideas?
EDIT: I deleted Google Messenger and tried a different messenger just to test, and it worked as it should. So it must me some kind of incompatibility with Google Messenger, and I'm guessing other messenger apps.

Yup, there appears to be a non-stock messenger app problem. Both Google Messenger and Textra were resulting in duplicate MMS.
I saw this thread and thought I would jump on here real quick. My GF also has metro PCS and she keeps trying to swap the default messaging client out with say GO SMS pro. And whenever she gets a new text she doesnt get any audible notifications. And the LED doesnt light up so she has to manually check her phone all the time. Has anyone else experienced that? Have a fix?

Swipe down from the status bar, click the little icon on the right, select GO SMS pro, toggle the Set to important notice.
Phone type: Blu Life One X on Android 5.1 (whatever happened to Blu promises for a droid version update? Word of caution: Don't believe Blue marketing 'promises'. Nice phone, but don't buy it unless its the OS you are willing to live with until your next phone)
Ever since google began sending love notes about its texting app becoming obsolete and I began using a different texting app (forget which one), I started having problems with duplicate messages being received. Last night I installed Textra and thought the problem was finally gone. Today while looking at the same texts received during testing last night, I suddenly have duplicate texts from last night for some messages (they were single copies last night). Really bizarre. I have also noticed that with Textra, the double text replies seem to now be only with my group texts.
Reading various threads, I became suspicious that maybe something in the Google contact phone numbers has become corrupted. Sure enough, some of the group contact phone numbers could no longer be easily edited. I messed around with the suspect contact information until I could edit the phone number to its simplest form (from +1 (123) 345-7890 changed to 123-456-7890). Seems to be working now. Will need another day to see if the texting acts up once again.
Now to figure out what is corrupting my Google contact information...
it's the 6.0 marshmallow update ..my Blu Vivo was just fine until i updated my phone i suggest you factory reset your phone.
I'm still on 4.1 and having issues with group texts. The stock messaging app (which I happen to like) threads them as individual texts. Not a group text. I didn't see any option for threading group messages in the settings.
I hate sms (this is one of the reasons) but everyone in the USA still operates on it.
Anyone else experienced this ? Any fixes for this in the stock messaging app? (Yes I know I can download a different one). I'm on t-mobile USA.
it is exist in Emui 5, you should update your phone
Okay, thanks for the heads up. Well I've tried but huawei hasn't pushed the update yet for my region (USA) and I'm not willing to hack it since it's irreversible and I might be selling my P9 and getting the plus.
Hi all,
I finally received my note 8 yesterday. I have the unlocked version on cricket wireless network (att). Everything on my phone is working fine EXCEPT my group messages. They are coming in separate. I do not mind using a texting app but I found recently that Textra is having problems- so I'm trying to avoid using a texting app.
All advice is needed and welcomed. Thank you.
If I understand correctly, I am having the opposite problem. I set up a group to send messages to and everyone sees all the replies - they want my texts, but only want me (and 1-3 specific other people, if only that were possible) to see if anyone replies. I'm using Message+ and can't find a setting to change that... if I understand this correctly as well, I think they are sending MMS and I want them to send SMS so only I see the replies. I have have tried other apps but they either limit contacts to 20, or everyone has to have that app, etc. Is Textra still having problems? Maybe I'll check that out.
My phone is a dual-sim version from Austraila (XQ-AT52). I'm in the US.
As I was setting up my phone, and before I installed the ATT sim card, the native google text message app showed the ability to use MMS for Group chats. As soon as I put the sim in, that option disappears from the menu.
Now, in the group texts ported over from my old Sony, I get a note right in the message sequence saying that all messages will be sent to each person in the group individually, and by SMS not MMS.
It seems like this might be a function of this build not being a US build, and that somehow there's a firmware difference where the single Sim, non 5G phones in the US (and maybe Taiwan) doesn't have the issue.
I'm using a third party app called Textra, and it's working okay, but I'd really like to get back to the native Google App with full group text functionality. I'm not sure if it's an ATT issue (given the option exists until I plug in the ATT sim card) or if it's a build issue, and I need to modify the phone.
Help!

How did you buy one from Australia? They don't sell them there. Also try putting the ATT sim in the second sim slot.
Cheers, Ben
Anyone have any solutions/suggestions? I have the same model (XQ-AT52) and am in Canada and it does not have the group MMS option in Advanced settings. Is this basically a build issue?
Gonna bump this old thread. Anyone ever find a fix? XQ-AT52 here on ATT in the US also no group messaging in Google messages either, and Textra is pretty awful...

That might be a problem with the carrier
Fixed it. used Newflasher and replaced my HK firmware with TW firmwarre, and replaced the oem_cust files from that, with the US firmware files, and now group messaging in android messages works.
Just because I'm curious; why do you still use MMS?
