I honestly made the best decision ever of removing the Facebook app from my phone, with it installed, my phone would drain 20% of battery overnight even with greenify. With it removed, I lost only 5% battery, couldn't be happier.
However, with that said, I use the alternative client Swipe, I really like it for normal browsing, but not the Messenger feature. I still have the FB Messenger app due to its calling, emoji, sticker, etc features, but man is it a resource hog. According to the wake lock detector, it woke my device 58 times.
Do any of you know of any other client alternative to the current messenger app with a better theme than the one in Swipe with the same features as current FB Messenger app. Not too fond of Swipe's messenger as it just loads the mobile site version, its features are limited.
If not, do any of you know how to restrict the app properly to not wake my device so often? Greenify seems to have no effect
Trillian will work with your facebook account. Last time I used it, which was about a year ago, the interface wasn't the best to look at but got the job done. It handles other messaging protocols such as Skype, but doesn't work with Whatsapp (naturally).
I was gonna suggest a all in one like trillian and someone on these boards made a facebook messenger and twitter all in one app tho i forget the name. I never go on facebook but I leave it installed but it never takes like any battery, tho I turned off all notifications and turned off chat in the main app and turned off auto load video etc. No issues tho but not many options for third party messenger apps but search forums for the all in one i mentioned.
Possibly IM+? I used this way back in the day with earlier versions of Android, might do the trick! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.shapeservices.impluslite
If I remember correctly you can also use Disa with the facebook plugin. that way you have SMS and facebook in the same app

Now that I updated, I have 2 facebook accounts in my accounts tab in settings.
Also, I can use the app, but when I click things it just takes me to the mobile facebook page in the browser. I can do that on my own!
I clicked don't sync as i feared that would happen. I did read on the sync page that u can at anytime change ur setting for sync.
Also read the engadget review comments and seen that most will just bring u to the browser. Pointless update to me.
Does ur.phone at the same as before.

Facebook still hasn't implemented global notifications, which makes this update completely worthless. The UI update is nice, but I'd rather have functionality at this point (coming from a Blackberry that is archaic compared to media usage.. I find this a bit ironic).
The sync feature is hit and miss as well. You will find two options in your sync options for FB now. One of them, even if left off, is a placeholder for your log in information for the app. Turning the sync on will just load another set of linked contacts, most likely slowing down Samsung's OS even more. I checked it out and then removed all of the links by turning it off (nice touch, FB). The feature will be nice for people who load a stock 2.2 ROM on their phone (when available).
useless and horrible update, read the thread about it:
http://androidforums.com/android-applications/141091-facebook-ver-1-3-now-out-3.html
I updated before I read this thread and now facebook is killing my battery.

But what about the contact sync issue?
I had mine to sync every 2 hours. Each time it would sync'd, it added another link to the contact. So, after 6 hours, I had 3 more links to my contacts that had Facebook.
I turned the sync off in the Facebook app, and used the sync with the phone. I have a Captivate and for some reason it has two different Facebook options in the account sync settings which do different things.
FB for android is horrible... man, I thought FB for Blackberry was bad.
Has anyone else noticed that on the News Feed it doesn't even show 1/3 of the posts? Also, why does it take you to your browser when you click on any link to a notification or comment in the app?
I ended up turning on SMS notifications for facebook because the Android FB UI is garbage
not only that, it synced my contacts so many times i had 8-10 seperate listings in my contact list for everyone in my phonebook that has facebook.
so i removed that using Titanium and im good to go.
Does FB synchronize photos for you guys? I'm talking to friends with other androids and they say it does... not so for me. Wondering if its the Captivate or my settings.
Also, when you click on "View Profile" when looking at a contact does it take you to their profile or yours? When I click it it takes me to my profile instead of the person's.
Hi Guys,
I am trying to find an email client which supports Microsoft Exchange / Activeysinc, and which can support multiple folders syncing. Right now i am using Note's stock email app, which is reasonable, but will only update the Inbox.
I however, have a large folder structure coupled with many server rules which automatically move the mails into their designated folder, so only updating the inbox is definetly not enough for me, because i can receive new emails in those folders but the mail client will not alert me when they arrive... instead, you have to go in each folder and update it manually, which is a real pain.
So, back to the original question: can you point me to an advanced email client who can do the above (automatically sync all folders and alert me when i receive new message in all of them, not only in inbox).
Many thanks in advance for your help!
regards,
devlin-ro
Moxier Mail. Not cheap for the priviledge but it does as you ask and has a trial so you can test it before you buy.
I really like Touchdown by NitroDesk. You can sync any folders you want, and works for not only email, but also other Exchange functions. It's kind of expensive, but I find it's often on sale at the Amazon app store.

I like touchdown except for a couple things:
One, in the sea of settings, there's no setting to have it default to classic view; I have to switch manually each time I open the app. I like the newer view except that in portrait mode most of the screen is wasted space. I want more emails shown.
Two, poor battery life. There were other contributors, but I disabled push, switching to polling once every 24 hrs, and better battery stats still showed a huge number of wake locks. So now I keep it frozen with titanium backup until I really need it, like doing a server search.

I agree with you there. I currently have the version from the Android App store, which doesn't have that option for the view. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one that couldn't find a way to turn it off.
I've been watching BetterBatteryStats, and I haven't had an issue with it using up my battery. Actually, K9 Mail is the one that kills mine.
Hi to all of you!
Many thanks for your replies. I actually tried Moxier and Touchdown, but I could not configure Moxier while Touchdown worked like a breeze... so I stayed with Touchdown. Currently I am using it in evaluation period and it looks ok to me (does what I need). I configured it to only update manually, so I did not see any issues with battery (so far, at least).
Once again, many thanks for the sugestions!
All the best,

I am running both Friendcaster pro and Facebook because I have issues with both. Basically friendcaster shows some of my friends posts and Facebook shows other posts, neither shows all my friends posts. I can't for the life of me figure out why this is happening, settings maybe? This very annoying that I have to run both apps in order to see all posts. Another issue I have is that I try to run facebooks widget on CM9 but I can not scroll through the widget. Any suggestions on these issues or recommendations on another Facebook app where all post show up. Thank you.

It's an app issue. Friendcaster has been becoming less stable over time

There are two main causes of this.
First, it is possible that some of your friends have set their privacy settings to block access to their profile, wall, photos and status updates from third party apps like FriendCaster.
If you go to your Facebook account and select Account -> Privacy Settings -> Ads, Apps and Websites and click “Edit Your Settings” and check “Apps You Use” you’ll see an item entitled “How people bring your info to apps they use” you can see checkboxes for the items that are available to apps. As an example, If your friend has “My photos” unchecked here, they won’t appear in FriendCaster. If “Platform Apps” are turned off here, the account will be completely invisible to 3rd party apps like FriendCaster.
Unfortunately Facebook has this restriction in place and unless your friend allows third party apps we can't get around it at this time. If your friends are using that setting, the info will only appear on Facebook itself.
In addition, the Graph API that Facebook provides for us to provide information to your FriendCaster app doesn't provide Top News or Most Recent exactly as on Facebook, it's actually it's own feed that's probably most similar to most recent, but not exactly the same. So some posts may not be in the same order or may not appear at the same time.
It's more than friend permissions...

Facebook says that Friendcaster has not even attempted to access my friend's photos and videos since July 31. NONE of them.
I promise, my wife and children are allowing me to see. But Friendcaster is not attempting to access.
I am using the simple email app included, Gmail is disabled. Using arhd 10.1 but this problem was here long before with original stock.
I guess I have already tried all possible combinations to have the mail sync, maybe someone else has an idea on how this works if at all.
In settings I tried the smart sync, then each number of minutes, whatever I put in there, the only way to have the mail query the server is to manually open the application. For instance, I send myself an email from desktop, my ipad picks it up in a matter of seconds, I mean the fu$#er is in sleep mode, cover on, then I almost instantly hear that notification sound. The One however, I could wait all day, no sign it knows about it.
I have 2 email accounts configured, yahoo and Gmail, I also tried to add one at a time, nothing seems to help.
Thanks for any idea on how to make it work or any suggestions on a third party app?

Smartsync takes time to build a database of data about your usage and when to check for email. For Gmail the best bet is the Gmail app, which will get almost instant push notifications.

I'd rather be using only one app for my email accounts - - the stock mail for instance.
It's just that no sync mode seems to work, be it smart or not

like the guy said above. smart sync needs to build a repour before it will know when to check. its not having information pushed to it like the gmail app is. your best bet is to use the 2 separate apps since each individual app has the ability to push emails immediately while HTC's smart sync or manual sync is just basically timed sync-ing. its just that smart sync is timed to how the phone learns your usage?

As I said the manual mode doesn't work either.
I am going to try k9 for now..

Okay, I think the problem might be elsewhere: the k9,same as mail doesn't seem to sync either. I have tried this over wifi and data, in power settings the sleep mode is disabled, I even disabled power saver.
Does email synchronization works for anyone excepting gmail users?
I am going to enable gmail, see how that behaves with sync..

Manual mode as in your in the mail app and request it to refresh? And the email still doesn't come through? Not sure then.. I used smart sync for a while then I found it to not update fast enough for my needs. But it did always work.

The mail app syncs over wifi, I found out. Yes, it took a while (set it up to check at 5 minutes.). However, it still doesn't work when screen is off.
While on data only, the whole sync is very conservative. Unless I open up myself the mail thing it doesn't bother to refresh. In fact, the only thing synchronizing over data is weather from BW widget, but even then I am afraid it only refreshes itself when opening the screen. Ah, and Google play, I get notifications over mobile data as well.
I mean I used to want this conservative data behavior when on 100mb data plan, however now I have 3gb to spend and having trouble with email notifications?
I suspect there might be a misbehaving app will try reinstalling everything and one app at a time..

Does this help?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2267281
penultimate post.
I am experiencing significant battery drain from the Exchange linked native E-mail app on the T-Mobile S6 with the push update installed. The drain accounts for ~50% of the battery usage and is attributed to "Email Sync" from the native app. Has anybody else with an exchange linked phone experienced this? My battery lasts only 6-7 h in the presence of this drain under normal use. I tested the drain during rest overnight, and the drain accounted for ~40% drain over a 6 hour period of absolute rest with complete keep awake over the same time. This drain is a deal breaker and is killing the phone for me...
Your feedback, possible solutions, or sympathetic experience is greatly appreciated.
I froze the native email app and the exchange stuff since I need to bypass exchange security.
Using mailwise, I have no real drain syncing with my exchange account. It's a free app and really good so you might try that as an alternative.

I was hoping to be able to use the native app and avoid a 3rd party exchange mail app. Mailwise is great though. Actually better than the native app.
I cannot freeze native email services and apps though. Restarting after removal of the account details on the native app worked and all is well. I can finally enjoy the phone!
Many thanks
