Adaway Google opinion rewards - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm using Google opinion rewards and adaway at the same time. I have not gotten any surveys lately. Do I need to white list in adaway to allow surveys to come in? I thought ad blockers usually only work on websites not apps?

AdAway rewrites the HOSTS file, and thus blocks ads within apps as well as ads in the browser. You'll need to whitelist Google Opinion Rewards to get them.

I have been using adaway and Google rewards together simultaneously for as long as I can remember . I get surveys like clockwork . Currently I'm on N preview 3 but usually always running Pure Nexus . Once in a while none come in for a short time for no apparent reason.

OK so you don't white list anything and it still works?
I have clients.4.google.com and survey double click white listed.
Adfree used to allow them to come through no problem but it's having issues so I am using adaway now. I'm running Pure Nexus at the moment

Correct. I have nothing whitelisted bro. I use adaway purely to block stupid pop up ads and such. I don't ad anything to the block lists. Yea I have seen you in the pure nex thread. I would wait a few days. The survey's should start filtering back through. On a side note I have my adaway installed the systemless way this time with N preview 3,all other times it was installed the regular way. Neither has seemed to make a difference getting survey's.

Ad sponsered free apps increasing, Any type of firewall?

Well been doing alot of study lately and it seems ALOT of apps on the market that are full versions and are "free" seem to have ad sponsored elements in them. Sending your GPS data to whoever or other various things. Now while if the dev mentions on the description that their "Paid" version is ad free. Least its up front and honest about it. However alot of Apps I found out hide this info it seems. Is this going to be the new "Kazaa" on the G1? Back when Kazaa came out, is when the influx of "Spyware" was increasing. Im worried is this happening to the G1 now? While I can understand devs choosing this to make their app free and gain from it a lil. Whats to say other devs wont use this for other intentions that may have some negative impact?
Just wondering tho.. for modded G1s. Is there some sorta firewall app or so yet that might be useful? Anyways just thought I would post for discussion case I am worried over nothing.
Install AdFree from the Market.
Cool ill try that. Still tho some discussion would be good. Cause I don't know if this should be something to start getting concerned on. Apps running in background draining battery, and reporting info possibly and so. Or am I getting concerned over nothing?

A little paranoia is a healthy thing, too much is bad, but these ads collect all sorts of location information to profile you and provide relevent advertising, but who knows what else happens with the data etc etc etc
PS you need root access on your phone to use AdFree
Yea Im fully rooted, No worries there. =) Thanks for this heads up. I use host files as well on my PC.. since then never had a issue with spyware again. Any news on if he would let us update the host file ourselves? Id love to use the file I have on my PC. Heh.
Anyways as for discussion goes. Can these ads know your G1 email, or linked email account? Next off, is there a ability that these ads could read your personal data as text msgs, contacts (to spam phone calls) or anything like that? Android being a new OS.. not sure what devs and ads can do with access to a phone. Its like a new gateway has been opened.
Kinda wish a dev could comment if the G1 would even have this ability and if it could be a bad thing.
Edit: Good question, this Ad Free, is it like if you add a hosts file in a router? Like if I use the G1 to tether, is it blocking the ad banners even on tethered connections? Would be interesting to know for sure since imagine a built in firewall that protects tethered PCs too.

You can use your own hosts file on your own phone, AdFree just automates the process, if you look at this thread it started off describing how to do things manually.

Possibly, I haven't looked into accessing the google credentials from the android APIs so I don't know for certain, might be a private API google only shares with it's own apps, that doesn't mean someone won't figure out how to access them however.

When you install an app there is a screen displayed of the permissions the apps ask for, read/write contacts, calendars etc will all be displayed, you should be able to see the permissions an app will have access to after it's installed as well from memory.

You should be more worried what google will do with all the info it collects to be honest, but that's another issue altogether.

You are prompted during install as to what the app will be able to access, google leaves it up to you to accept it or not.

Depends how the tethered setup gets DNS info, if it uses the information from the hosts file then yes, but this is dependent on what the tether setup does.

Only if you never bothered reading the permissions requests when installing an app. They clearly describe what permissions an app wants to use and you can cancel the installation if you feel you don't want to give an app the right to access your personal info. So if you install a game that says it wants access to your Google Account info (which would include your email and thus all your associated google services) then you have only yourself to blame if the dev sends you a ton of spam or sells your email address.
Bottom line is read the permissions requested carefully and decide whether you trust the company/entity that created the app before installing it. Also, i'd be very wary installing any root apps, since root apps by their very nature can operate outside of dalvik sandbox and do practically anything they want to your system. I'm only running two root apps right now: Market Enabler and Wifi Tether. They are both open source.
Well of course I read the permissions thing. However still I would still wonder about things.

Unless you audit the code and compile it yourself, you have no idea what the binary is actually doing.
Location data is only used for serving the right banners and calculate the profits the banner view/click has depending on the location (country) of the viewer.
Its not anything malicious and you can easily see the permissions when installing.
People all like free apps instead of paying a few dollars, but when an ad is added people try to get rid of it... Havent you all ever wondered why the ads are there? Just like on a forum as the one you are on right now? Right they generate at least a little bit of money for a dev that doesnt want to charge the users directly by letting them pay, but spends almost all his free time to keep apps updated, write new once and answering questions.
As soon as there is virtually no way too make money on a market, the market will die as developers/companies will move over to an other platform of development.

Many people don't like to view ads on their computers, let alone their mobile phone. Thus if people can block the ads easily, they will. Content producers and software developers will simply have to find a new business model to pursue. Maybe that's a free/premium differentiation model or maybe its microtransactions. That or they will have to deal with a percentage of their userbase blocking ads.
Well I am sure most devs Block ads too, either on their mobile or pc.. no one wants any type of issue.
Now again, I said I understand why they are there for free apps. Its just that as a user myself.. I like to know Im protected from potential hazards. Also alot of devs like to make something hot to use on later resumes and projects. Ive worked with alot of devs in my time start with nothing and grow to get bigger jobs in RL cause of the project. =)

I didn't say it was hard to get or compile it, but auditing the code to make sure nothing malicious is going on can be very difficult at times. There is a code obfustication competition each year and it's extrodinary what some can do and you'd never know unless it was pointed out to you.

It's not just "issues" too many ads tick a certain segment of the population off to the point that they go to these lengths to get rid of them.
This is of course before you factor in this segment of the population are usually the least to click on ads, usually for ethical/moral reasons, so them getting rid of ads is usually no big loss.
Last time I checked AdFree was downloaded less than 5,000 times, now compare this to a speedometer app I made which anyone can run and it's been downloaded over 10,000 times I highly doubt any dev relying on ads will actually loose out by the people that can and are blocking them.

The meta data that can be gleened from this sort of advertising can have all sorts of flow on effects and unintended consequences.
I see the world and potential pitfalls in things differently than others, I don't know why, but the more data collected the worst things can be.
If you are interested in what country they are from/in just pull the country code from the SIM card, why narrow it down to within a few metres?
Well since I have been using Adfree. Let me say this. My G1 seems to be running faster! I dont get as many force close/wait errors. Certain apps like atrackdog for one RUN faster. I mean without the ads running, it seems my apps speed through their task and do what they are supposed to. Kinda interesting note oddly.
Also lets say a app you know would be using GPS to locate you on a map. Thus triggering "Give app permission to use your GPS" which you know why it needs it. But does the app also tell you that it uses the GPS for Ads? So I dont always trust what it says when it comes to permissions as it doesnt mean in the underline that its not using the same permission to do other things. Would be nice if the G1 had a notice that the app uses Ad support.
Linux is a wonderful and powerful operating system that can do just about anything you can possibly dream of.
First, the hosts file hack is a piece of crap since all it does is it points potentially malicious domain names back to self. It doesn't take into account connections that are ip address based... those will still go through and there is nothing that can be put in the hosts file to stop that.
iptables on the other hand.... included in 1.0 and 1.1, and several custom 1.5's, can do many strong things; block by ip address (including if it tries to lookup by dns), block by port, *BLOCK BY USER ID*.
The latter is particularly interesting since each program installed on android is assigned its own userid. That means that with the correct iptables rule, you can block all network traffic for THAT PARTICULAR PROGRAM. Or you can blacklist/whitelist servers for that program, etc.
http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/block...ingle-user-from-my-server-using-iptables.html
http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/linux...ng-access-to-selectedspecific-ip-address.html
For example, when I issue this command:
iptables -A OUTPUT -o tiwlan0 -m owner --uid-owner 10017 -j DROP
My browser is no longer able to connect (since it is uid=10017) using wifi (tiwlan0 is wifi). Note: leave out the entire "-o tiwlan0" argument and it should block all outgoing on all devices for that userid.
To find the userid for a particular program, do "ls -l /data/data/program'sdatadirectory"
So on JF 1.51 is this ability already there? Yea I know Linux is great for iptables. Always is, even in routers hehe.
If its not in there already, Debian, how well does that work on the G1?

root your phone with towelroot and then save your battery with DroidWall

this guy just saved me from switching to verizon after being on att before it was cingular. i cant have a non rooted S5 because of the battery consumption from all the web traffic and the bloatware. Bloatware slams the memory and CPUs and consume web traffic making your wifi radio work. warm up my pocket. i can feel myself getting cancer.
if i disable my wi-fi adapter my S5 will last 3 days of low phone calls, tons of text, few pictures and some hours of music. i use an app called DroidWall to block network traffic. I used to use it only on my 4G connection to limit use of bandwidth (still do by the way and saves gigs a month thanks to Facebook and Google updates), but will now use it to limit what apps can talk on wifi when i want them. Droid wall needs root. The other saver is Es File Explorer. It works without root, but with root you can manually remove or disable bloatware. best of all you can disable it from startup so you use when want. you can simply disable it (read up) so you dont actually uninstall it and install it back if you need it for some reason
go the website below and download the app to root your phone, install it, open and click the 'make it rain button'
go to the play store to get droid wall and es file explorer, will need a few more apps to make root work (read up).
here is his first post with all the links and instructions, i take no credit for this guys awesome work and i will probably donate him $100 for saving my phone.
let me know if you have any other questions about what i have done. my phone just went from lasting barely a day with not much use to lasting two days with low use (i havent had root long)

i am not going to suggest what you should disable, you should probably try this on an app by app basis and see if you break any process or applications while disabling apps. Its best to freeze or disable them then to uninstall. no telling what will happen if you uninstall an important system process.
somehow i have disabled an app that prevents my gear from getting email notifications. so i am trying to figure that out myself. as soon as i make some progress, will share what i have done as a suggestion.

with the AF firewall limiting apps using my 4g and disabling, freezing the following apps my battery is still at about 70% as opposed to 40% and the end of an 8 hour work day. i also have the gear 2 on all 8 hours to read my email and text messages (and tell time!), so bluetooth and the wifi is always on. Dont even have to use power saving mode
frozen/disabled apps
blurb, dualclock, headlines, knoxagent, knoxsetup, mobile print, onlinehelp, kidsmodeinstaller, sounddetector and travelservice.
all the AT&T apps except the wifi, chaton, chrome, device help, google drive, drive mode, flipboard, google books/movies/newstand/text to speech, isis wallet, my AT&T, play games, s health, samsung billing, samsung print service, yellow pages.
phone works great. check my exchange mail every 15 min, but leave the 4g and GPS off unless i need it.
keep in mind i just froze these apps, didnt uninstall them because i have plenty of space.
i did have samsung account disabled, but realized i couldn't update my gear apps, so i had to unfreeze with Titanium Backup, and then the apps updated fine.
this works for me, cant promise it wont break something you use.
anyone know of any other obvious apps i can disable to save more battery?

I did add two custom host files but that shouldn't matter. I turned them off and it's still blocking ads. I do use Chrome Canary though which is different than the stock Chrome that comes with our phones. It's an alpha release and is ALWAYS updated just about every day. Sometimes it crashes because the devs are trying new things but they usually fix it within a day. Until they fix it I then run Chrome beta. I never use stock Chrome.
As for the setup? All you have to do is make sure the host files that came with DNS66 are updated before you start the task. Click the "reload button" in the upper right hand corner then wait...once they are updated then press start. Here are screenshots of a web site I go to called "Project Free TV" It's HEAVY on ads. You can see what it looks like with DNS66 on and with it off. It's DEFINITELY working.
P.S. Make sure you add it to the ignore list or "white list" of apps NOT to kill if you're using a task killer like Advance Task Manager or Greenify.

I'm loathe to use any VPN tool that is not open source. You never know what traffic from your phone is sent to what server. Also VPNs in general take a toll on battery. I really hope Adhell can be fixed for Note 8

It's done locally, so there are no risks to your privacy. VPN is a little more battery hungry compared to DNS blocking, but Adguard doesn't leave empty blocks everywhere like other adblockers do.

I know the vpn server is technically done locally but basically the app has access to ALL of the network traffic to/from your phone so it can do whatever with it and unless it's open source, I personally am not comfortable.
This is a good read. Might help someone out.

Good ad blocker without root

Hi,
I always used Adaway on my rooted Galaxy S6 and was working perfect, especially with blocking ads in apps.
Now I have a Note 8, but from my company. I don't want to root this right now. Is there any ad blocker that is working as perfect as Adaway, but then without root?
Thanks!
I've been using adguard for over a year now. Gets the job done nicely. No complaints.
I used Adguard also but I hated how you will always see a notification icon when using it. Some people report that it's noticeable on battery life but I never noticed it. That's cause I never used it for more than a few days or so cause that's about how long I can last without rooting then I switch to AdAway.
I hear DNS66 is another good one.
I also been using Adguard for nearly 3 yrs on my pc /laptop (Windows) and my phone.(Android)
I very seldom see an advert. Also Adguard presence on XDA helps. I have had no issues with their support
services. Yes, it has subscription service etc. but worth it.
Battery usage , for me is very minimal.
If users take time to read Adguard explanations /help , on why it reflects a higher level of battery usage, you will understand that Adguard routes all website traffic
through it's VPN etc and thus its not actually
Adguard battery usage alone, but the other apps also (that it re routes.) combined, that is normally reflected.
Overall for me, the best option if you have no root.

Thanks for your reply. But I am not looking for a ad blocker only in a browser, but for all apps as well. When I see Adaway on a rooted phone, it blocks also all ads in an app (for example games etc.).
Is there any blocker for non-rooted devices that does all?
Thanks!

Hi,
I always used Adaway on my rooted Galaxy S6 and was working perfect, especially with blocking ads in apps.
Now I have a Note 8, but from my company. I don't want to root this right now. Is there any ad blocker that is working as perfect as Adaway, but then without root?
Thanks!

I'm using Disconnect Pro from the Samsung app store, It's pricey $25.00 but does seem to block system wide.

Adguard ( standalone ) does all .
Pc/laptop or Android.... ..standalone !
Block In app popups ,blocks ads (all sorts of apps)
Also has a whitelist to list websites not to block ,all type of spam filters etc . .etc .
No root required .As stated been using it for about 3 yrs ,i hardly seen an advert slip by .!
If you want full benefits ,then the subscription is best .
The free app does not work so good ( my opinion )
And i forgot ,somebody mentioned about notification in notification bar ,
Well it's there for good reason .
https://adguard.com/en/welcome.html
and
https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/adguard-ad-blocker-doesnt-require-root-t2958895
Yes you also get Adguard ( extension ) for Samsung Internet .
I am not talking about this extension , i don't even use this extension .
Good luck .
I'm using dns66 and it seems to be working great and it works in many apps.
try blockada, works great for me
Blockada
Just tried blockada so far I like. I hate the key in the notification bar but really not that big of deal. As l long as blocks out ads that's what matters to me. I downloaded tried a game ad blocked opened up terrarium tv app known for lots of ads blocked 31 ads in two apps did not see one ad
So far I like
Disconnect pro from the Samsung store (yes, 20€ for an app that makes your 1000€ phone better) or adhell (in case, that is still available). They are both using the Knox firewall to block ads. Imo that is the most sensible way, better than a pseudo VPN.
Are the VPN solutions compatible with other Vons?
Adhell ... very good search the apps store for it .

Huawei Mate 10 Pro Ad Block and other tips and tricks

So here is a short Huawei Mate 10 Pro guide. It might work for other Huawei's as well. If so pls let me know.
How to kill ads on Huawei Mate 10 Pro without Rooting the phone
What does the good people of XDA think is the way to go to kill ads without rooting?
NB: These tips and tricks are not my brain work. It is a collection of problems, issues and solutions to things I've experienced with the Mate 10 Pro, and the solutions are the great work of this forum and various contributors. My only contribution is to try to gather them all here in post one so people don't need to read the whole thread. In particular i would like to thank Pretoriano80 for his contributions in this thread. He made my life easier. Thank you.

Recap:
Remove Ads from browsers:
This solution worked well for removing ads from browsers, so I bought it from playstore to show my support. Thx to Pretoriano80 for resolving most of my ad problems.
This solution also takes care of the in-apps ads!

Hi mate, i also hate aggressive ads, so after many trials and errors, i finally found the best (and also free and no Root) solution.
I'm using an app called "Virtual Hosts" which is blocking ADS by creating a local VPN and loading a host file.
The app is open source and you can get the apk for free, downloading it from here - > https://github.com/x-falcon/Virtual-Hosts/releases < - or from Playstore by paying it (both versions are identical).
Once installed, you can downloaded and use the "host" file from here - >

Youtube without ads:
A youtube version that is slightly altered to filter out ads. Works on non rooted devices and can be installed alongside the original youtube. Notice the modified MicroG apk on the second quote for using this modified youtube with your google account.

How to root Huawei Mate 10 Pro:
Some of you looking into this thread might wanna have full control over your Mate 10 Pro by rooting. There are various ways but the MAGISK seems really nice, and you can choose which apps shall see root or not. Read more here; https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk
A short video of Magisk; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFJVoIjKZJw
Pretoriano80 said:
Rooting with Magisk is possible on Mate 10 pro, so you can use banking app or any other app that requires a "stock" device. As long as you pass SafetyNET verification and you hide root from the eyes of those apps, than you can use them with Root.

Huawei Mate 10 Pro apps loosing 4G and Wifi connection
When I first started to use the Huawei Mate 10 Pro I noticed that every once on a while an app would not work when I tried to restart the app. Suddenly I got an error saying their was no data connection, meaning no 4G or wifi. It was faulty error because I could use data in other apps. For me typically the problem was related to Spotify and Audible. The only fix I could find right away was a full reboot. It always took care of the problem and apps would work properly. Reboots are not welcome in a busy day. So I've looked around and found that I could manually control the power saving management for each app in >setting>battery>Launch. By taking back the control apps worked flawless once again.
A few weeks ago we had a yet another firmware update. And behold, once again the problem started. Only this time even in manual mode in >Launch the apps would still loose their 4G connection randomly, or even wifi if at home. It seemed like a reboot was the only choice to get things working. Until I by pure luck tried to enable the Ultra Battery Saver from the pull down menu. Enable it, then exiting it somehow resolves any power saving issues. Apps they work fine, they get their data connection, both 4G and wifi. The quick fix takes only seconds to complete, and there is no need to do a full reboot in order to have apps fully working.
I'm using adguard. To avoid some popup that coming from browser. And in the same time, if the apps have ads and i use the app continuesly, I'll purchased it, as im supporting the developer.

So I got a new phone, after years with a LG G3 it finally tanked. Today the replacement came. Huawei Mate 10 Pro.
And what a strange experience it was to fire up the unrooted phone. So much ads. Everywhere. Overwhelming.
I've been on a custom ROM rooted G3 for the past 4 years or so. I forgot about the ads.
The plan was to keep this phone stock, no root. In order to comply with all the crazy folks that try to force us to not use rooted devices. But as many of you have seen too, there are so many services that we use daily that will not work with rooted phones. I've worked around that before and have been happy.
But for now I am not ready to use a custom Rom or to root.
how can I kill ads? Ad guard, DNS66 or maybe block-this?
Maybe I am getting old, have a touch of paranoia or are just not brave anymore. But adding APK from sources I don't know much about feels well not good. There are so many scams and ****ware floating around. I would hate to end up with crapware for trying to get some peaceful surf time without ads. Apps are for the most part OK, because I pay for almost all those apps I use, and by paying I support and avoid ads. But even using a browser to read news I get littered in ads. Man ads really take the fun out of internet. I would easily pay good money as yearly fee to avoid ads. IS there anything out there that will work as a paid app?

P. S : Let me know how it works for you. Here is working perfectly and with almost no battery drain.
In regards to browsers. I used to use Dolphin browser, which has a good ad blocker, but, ever since Oreo, it crashes when I enable the ad blocker. Anyone have luck using Dolphin? Firefox also has a pretty good ad blocker but I find it slow.
A while back I had to send the much beloved Lg G3 to change screen, and the week it took before it was returned I had a loaner phone, a G5. Phone was not rooted so I added a adblock by DNS can't remember the name of it, but that thing ate battery as well as cpu. One could feel phone starting to bog down while surfing. That being said, I didn't put any time and effort into the loaner phone so I didn't try to tweak anything so the sluggish result could be my mistake also.
As soon as I have made a complete backup I will start trying these, and the virtual host one by one and put a small review here in this thread. I just learned that twrp should now also work for unrooted devices. That makes me very happy as it is familiar to use. Got to check out to see if maybe even Titanium now will work for unrooted phones as well. That would be really sweet.
Forgot how much work it is to get a new phone. Nothing is the same, and every brand UI got their own take on small bits and pieces just so we get our heart rate going
If others have other suggestions for anti-ad apps I will make time to try those as well. Thx you all for your input. Much obliged.
I'm using adclear. Helps a lot.

Root was never required for TWRP to work, only unlocked bootloader. Anyway, there's no TWRP available yet for Mate 10 Pro.
Titanium Backup will never work without root cause is the only way it can write on the /data partition.
Oh ok I thought that no-root-needed was a new feature for twrp. I guess as Titanium will not work with un rooted phones neither will any other apps similar to Titanium?
Is there any apps similar to twrp that will work with Huawei Mate 10 Pro?
No matter what I guess I just have to start testing adblockers this weekend. Because I can't take all the ads I struggle with now. Too bad I didn't start out with the new phone by testing, before I sat up the phone they way it is now, with all apps, settings etc. Cos now if I would like a fresh start after testing various adblockers I will need to do the whole process of installing and tweaking all over again unless I find something like twrp for the Mate Pro 10.
Btw the xda app named my device BLA-L29, is that a name that is widely used for the Mate 10 Pro? Never seen this name before.

Installing the app i recommended has no risk, you don't need to backup anything. If it works and you like it, then you keep it, if not, just uninstall the app simple as that.
That app is open source, so no bloatware or any hidden stuff, it doesn't use DNS to circumvent ads and doesn't track anything, all it does is pointing Internet traffic to your "host" file, it's nothing like AdGuard and similar apps that also sell your data to third parties.
It only takes 5 minutes to test and decide, without any harm. [emoji6]
@Pretoriano80 thx a lot. That worked great, so great I had to support by buying the app.
Next step is to make youtube clutter free.

No problem, i knew it would work perfectly. Battery drain is also low and it doesn't throttle net performance.
I think that for YouTube the only alternative with no root is to use a modified version (look here on XDA if interested).
@Pretoriano80 Not sure I follow you, modified youtube? Search came up blank.
Is that an app/apk to replace the default youtube app? Because when I try to uninstall youtube from phone I get an error msg saying "system app can not be uninstalled". Should I just overwrite?

You should be able to deactivate the app and install the modded apk.
Ok, will retry. Seems that iYTBP - injected YouTube Background Playback might be a solution worth trying?

You Can use newpipe. You Can download it for free on f droid open source market. Works very well
Thx again @Pretoriano80. Now I got a phone that is very usable and responsive and it is still not rooted. I will quote your ad free youtube solution in the first post so others find what they need easily.
Now lets hope all them crazy people out there stops with the root discriminating behavior, so that people in the future damn well self decide to root or not without being locked out from using services, apps or whatever.

One more thing to get sorted, and that is a backup. I would prefer to find a custom recovery image that works with Huawei Mate 10 Pro, and that will also work well for non-rooted devices.
I have only used twrp myself, but twrp will not work with Mate 10 Pro. I also know about cwm recovery, have not tried it yet but that one will only work for rooted devices. So neither twrp or cwm will work for the BLA-L29/Mate 10 Pro.
Any suggestions?
