So I just lost my phone. While I shop and research for a replacement I was thinking of using my old Nexus One. Software is version 2.3.6.
Is this is really stupid idea from a security point of view, or is the software so old that the bad guys have long ago moved on?
I wouldn't be too concerned, I still slap a sim in older phones then this from time to time for fun - the vast majority of security issues will need you to let someone in, ie install a bad app or download something malicious
In truth it is not a simple thing to find a way into an one individuals phone without their consent
Are there possibilities? Sure, but so unlikely

Thanks demkantor. I figured it is easier to just play with an old phone for a week or so vs. doing all the work of loading up a temporary phone.
Cheers...
I also do not think about "bad idea". It's always the user in front and not the tool or software that make something "insecure".
It's fun because I bought a Nexus One again, yesterday, to give it a try again after the years. It was and is a wonderful piece of hardware.

Christian

So long story short my fascinate has turned into a thunderbolt and now I'm wondering if I should return it to get the revolution that comes out tomorrow. I took the thunderbolt right away since my favorite devs are already working on this phone, but it appears that the phone isn't very stable.
I haven't experience random reboots yet even after the phone applied a update right out of the box....I have experience some issues with the 4g staying connected although it seems to fix when I turn on and off the mobile data.
So I've already dealt with a binged phone before since I had the fascinate and that was fixed in the first month, my question is are there any other bolt users thinking the same thing after using the bolt?
My sig says no. sorry. nuh uh. nope.

Love this phone....LG is garbage...u might see me bashing the phone...but I love it
Bing on an Android phone makes me lol. So that's a no from me. I know that it's "fixable" but why do it in the first place :/

Google has nothing to do with that, VZW is the reason that Bing is becoming the new search engine for their phones. Why they would do something like that is beyond all of us...
But to answer the OP post, both phones are very much alike. There is a strong dev community for the TB already, where with the LG it's questionable. I haven't read up much about it but I don't know if it comes with a locked bootloader or not. If so, TB all the way, if not, I would say it's all about your personal preference.

I know this, it just sucks they want to further ruin the Google experience by belittling it with Bing, let alone all the crapware they install on the phone.

i am also thinking about these two and i am just waiting on the dev section of the revolution to see how it is and if it can rival the dev section of the t bolt
Love my TB go with it bro LG looks like it loaded crappy stuff on it plus it has bing on it ewwwwk
I have a fascinate so I dealt with bing and u get over it quick and work arounds are made in like first or second day of release

There are 500 Million reasons.
According to the Register, Microsoft has paid Verizon Wireless $500 million in a five-year search deal to make Bing its official search engine on most smart phones, like the BlackBerry Storm II.

If you have problems with reboots, try flashing another radio. I did and the reboots stopped.

from what i've seen, a dev community for the revolution has been nonexistent. i can't find one anywhere
Ok, I traded the Thunderbolt for the Revolution. I do not recommend the Revolution at all. First, it takes forever to charge (its about 25% as fast as the thunderbolt to charge). The default keyboard is garbage. It doesn't have the new Android market (uses a version of the market that was updated months ago) and is missing some apps that are normally on the market (in my case, it was missing one that I had paid for). There are some compatibility issues with some apps. It also lags occasionally( often lags when ending a phone call)
The major downfall for the Thunderbolt is its battery life, but that can be fixed with rooting and installing a custom rom. The Thunderbolt is a much better Android than the Revolution. The only thing the Revolution has going for it is that it comes preloaded with Netflix.
I will be trading in the Revolution within the 2 week period and trying out a new Android. Anyone know if Verizon has a limit on how many times you can trade a phone in within 2 weeks before they cut you off. If they don't have a limit, I will keep trading it in until the Bionic finally comes out.
I simply don't understand why anyone would chose the Revo when the Thunderbolt exists. The Charge I could understand for its screen and battery, but the Revo is inferior on almost every spec. It is a phone that was released out of sequence.
so i was given a tab for fathers dad and the wife went to BB and they talked her into paying full price for a tab i think it was like 400+. it was what i wanted (a tab at least) so i played with it for a while but took it back because i felt she spent to much. while i had it though it was a bit sluggish on its performance and did freeze and the browser did crash a few times randomly.
so after i had it i knew i really wanted a tab so i began my search and for my use of one just to waste time on the net and send emails and maybe watch some youtube i just needed a cheap no high end tab. well i was going to buy the nook color and root it and call it a day but 249.00 was still a little high. so i came across an amazing deal and got 2 tabs for less then 300.00 so with that said i have a few questions
1. is there an app or do i have to root then get an app to correct the sluggish issues??
2. my tabs say verizon on the back is this a good or bad thing. just talking random people on the streets i hear that because of the carrier im restricted in certain capacities??
3.ive seen u can over clock these but its only by .2 is it worth it??
4. is upgrading to honeycomb gonna be worth it ?? like is there a performance benefit for this or is it just cosmetic
5. my wife does online classes with phoenix she says she needs to be able to write and save papers as word 97 format. will she be able to do this on the tab??
very excited to start playing with my tab thanks in advance guys
As far as a app to fix the sluggishness, its not one app fixes all, its a combination of alot of things, search the forums, see what people are doing. As far as verizin on the back. That just means that you can only hook them up tgrough a cdma network and at that price they may very well have bad esn's, which if they do, there's a high chance that they are stolen. Not trying to give a don't buy used speach. It just means that they will never work on verizon.

Honey comb will not come out for these devices. They use the phone version of the new software which is gingerbread and yes that is already starting to roll out in italy.
As far as a .2 over clock, it really depends on what you are doing. Some people say yes over clock some say no. Once again just browse the forjms and see what people say. Doesn't have to necessarily be just the tab. See what peoples results are with any device, that should give you a pretty good idea.

One more thing. As far as gingerbread, it does do something for performace. Don't quote me on this but I belive I read somewhere thay samsung was improving the video drivers for the hummingbird chipset so we may see better graphics after the update.

Having a CDMA tablet also limits you to the Roms you can use. Make sure, if you decide to upgrade firmware, that it is a CDMA rom you are flashing as the GSM roms will probably brick your device...
Ok so from the responses I need to make sure I use CDMA roms and not gsm. What is the difference?? Also I need to make sure I run gingerbread?? Not sure what that means but I guess I have some homework to do. Lol. Also I'm not going to be using these on the 3G networks just wifi. If they did have broken cs..somthings that was said above will that effect the wifi??
Hello all. I have recently rooted my AHd and would like to know all I can about this phone. I learn real fast and don't want to brick my phone. I have limited exp with phones but back in the day there wasn't a console that stood a chance against me. Any help would be awesome. And once I become proficient in phones I will endeavor to share all knowledge I am taught.

LOL. I still have a box with 5 dismantled XBOXes (not 360, I fn hate 360's with a passion). People would come over and would go
WTF, is that FFVII on an XBOX?
Yep, gonna play Castlevania SOTN next, followed by Mario 3.
Hold up, PSX and SNES on an XBOX? How did you do that?
Loaded a Splinter Cell save game.
??Do wha?? Gotta explain that to me.
See, the save loads and that runs a buffer exploit involving some fonts that allow unauthorised code to...
Can you say that in English?

I really wish Microsoft didn't skimp on the power supplies. I miss my Chipped Xbox :crying:
Seriously though, you have 2 choices right now -- read the SafeStrap thread and start using SSR to get into custom roms or wait for the bootloader unlock exploit to be released and start custom romming with fastboot and a proper TWRP or CWM for backups. If I were you I'd wait for the latter.
I got into Android phone 2 years ago with the Moto Bravo. At the time, our choices for roms were a Stock Deodexed and a halfway working Defy CM7 port. There were a few power users left, but most had already jumped ship for better phones. Soon I was left with the choices of being stuck with that or try to learn something. Been learning ever since. Though if it weren't for XDA user Quarx I probably wouldn't have learned near as much as I have -- he's never taught me anything personally, but because he started supporting the Bravo it encouraged me to get into source which, in turn, made me learn much more.
A few hours reading the threads here and you should know the basics of AHD modding, but like I've been saying, most of that'll change soon.
I like direct, specific questions...so ask those
//I hate 360s cause I had four of em red-ring on me -- the last one was 12 hours after purchase -- Got home around 11pm, installed Oblivion to the drive, went to bed, woke up and it red-ringed. I had only had the damn thing powered on for 30 minutes total. Never had one last more than 2 months, seriously. Really bad product.
Wow to the hater. If u must know my life history I have probably been working with electronics and computers longer than you. But I had an unfortunate happenstance in my life that made me take a 8 year "vacation" at a wonderful " Men's Camp" so I am a little out of touch with today's tech. I was writing games back on my Tandy SL 1000 in GW basic. Do you even know what that is? And as far as Xbox and Xbox 360 those were child's play. And I rooted my phone in 2 hours having never even touched Linux or a smart phone before. And the syntax in the tut was screwed up. If I was such a idiot how did I figure it out myself? It looked a lot like old does commands so I fiddled and Presto

Microsoft went cheap with thief solder and heatsink attachment system. Every one I got I immediately re-balled solder on GPU and CPU as wheel as added custom heatsinks and attachment method. They would work great. There was a time before my exodus that I made over 2 grand a week repairing 360s flashing firmware and customizing. I even had Pawn shops bringing me their consoles

I wasn't referring to you in the quote box, just my idiot friends who don't even know what a OS is, let alone anything about modding and tweaking ....and no I don't know what a Tandy SL is. Sorry if you took offence and that you though I was calling you an idiot -- I wasn't -- I just figured you had friends who were equally amazed by what guys like us consider to be "normal use". Ya know, CSB and all that. And, FYI, you probably do know more than me, but I don't really care. I know what I do and I try to learn more each day*.
I also rooted my first phone android phone within 15 minutes (a Bravo 2 years ago) and had this rooted in 5...but being able to read, follow directions, and figure it out when it doesn't work isn't a major accomplishment.
*Know any good sources to learn Java and C? I'm feeling like I've plateaued and I that I need to seriously learn a language if I'm gonna be able to advance in skills.

After hearing the first lost on HTC, it does make me wander what's going forward. It is surprising to see this unfortunate turn around when mobile phone market grows quickly, there's something wrong with HTC's approach somewhere but I kinda don't get it why. I only get the fact that if HTC go under, or hurt too much, my phone will get less support. But if Lenovo takes it, I think it's a good thing because lenovo seems to have some magic on keep things running well, like IBM, although I don't appreciate their computers too much(don't have one ever) but looks to me a lot others do, and they rose sturdily to the biggest PC maker anyways.
Chinese companies acquisitions recently gave me an impression that those companies are not very intrusive on doing things their way, but tried a route of observe at a distance and help when needed. Like IBM, like volve. They seems like not only want to acquire the company but also learn their management, operation, tech, brand name and so on, so that the addition is a different level of products not total blend in.

when you search the internet the Galaxy Gear gets bad press and its nuts, I was a little put off buying one at the start but decided yesterday to spend the cash as I am in Brisbane Australia for 3 weeks of training then back to NZ, I when I first brought my gear (yesterday) went to try some notifications and thought what the hell Samsung why would I want a notification that means I then had to open my phone.......... now think about this
Samsung is NOT some back yard designer/manufacture but a multi discipline very very big company, did you know they build heavy Industries?
So now we know Samsung is a very clever bunch of people... why would they sell a product with such a negative response from the public?
My answer to this came today when I upgraded my Gear to the latest firmware version and suddenly ALL the things we wanted were present, think about this.... how hard was it for Samsung to add this extra features? SIMPLE... so why release it without it?
NEGATIVE ADVERTISING IS THE CLUE
If you think about the amount of coverage this has given Samsung in a very short time well....... and they fix it with a simple update? perfect marketing!!
Oh and im very happy with my gear including the price, it will exponentially improve over the next few months
Also look at the thread count and posts in the smart watch section, another thing you see comments out there stating its useless without a phone.... well yes you need to do the initial setup, but its got a built in clock, when you turn off your phone, or flatten it...it still keeps time
samsung is great at making hardware, but i can't think of any part of the software that i really appreciate. i would love if they just stick to releasing new devices itself running pure android.

yes I can agree with that, its better to be an open market for this sort of thing
Samsung with the latest update is wayyyy ahead of sony smartwatch witch is on the 3th generation. They launched the gear without some of the improuvments because they WANTED baddly to be the first, before Apple. What i don't understand is why samsung is not sending again the gear to be reevaluate by tech media after the last update.

Also, the negative publicity because of the non-availability of key features on a device that's hardware specs should allow, makes developers naturally want to get their hands on it and fix these problems, then what does Samsung have, a bigger developer following to help enhance this newer device form factor so they can be the first on the front lines with the most development, so they can set themselves as the main smart watch manufacture, so they can control more of the market, in short, they peoples at the Samsung do da business sneaky and outs o dey own greed like a de apple butt-a-heads (but not nearly as selfish and unconcerned about the true advancement of technology as the advancement of their own wallet) Lolz on rants but it's true.
