I am only just getting used to CM on my Fire. I have set up a restricted profile for my child. The problem that I have is the home screen is black (the lock and open apps screens aren't). If I switch to the open apps screen it says "Your recent screens appear here". If I go back to the home screen then I get "Unfortunately, System UI has stopped", so I have no way to launch apps in the restricted app.
I have enabled apps in the restricted profile settings.
I've tried a "normal" additional user and a guest and both of these appear to work.
Just wondering if I've done something wrong, or if restricted users don't work ?
I forgot that I posted this as I never got any answer at the time, I probably posted to the wrong place
Anyway, to close this out, I discovered that the "HPROF" app needs to be enabled (in the owner's "App&Content Access" settings screen for the restricted user) for the restricted profile to work properly. With this app enabled for the restricted user everything works fine.
Sorry to dig this out again.
How have you been able to setup a restricted profile at all? I'm on 12.1 with my Kindle Fire (Thor) and I'm only able to setup new profiles without having the chance to chose between regular and restricted. Any hint?
Hi, yes. I have set up one for my daughter and used a restricted profile. Here's what I did...
As your main (owner) user, bring up settings and then users. You need to go that way - don't swipe down and tap the user icon on the right hand side because that lacks the restricted user option.
Anyway, from the settings->Users screen, select "add user or profile" and choose "Restricted Profile". After you've added the profile it will appear on the same settings->users screen. It will have a little cog next to it - tap that and then enable the apps you want to allow the profile to access. By trial and error I discovered that you must enable HPROF. I think that everything else is optional. Good luck
Thanks for the quick response. Unfortunately CM 12 and 13 builds for the Kindle seem to be "smartphone" rather than "tablet" builds. As Google has removed the feature of restricted profiles for smartphones, on the Kindle the option of setting up restricted profiles is missing :crying:
Ah! I just noticed that your device is different to mine - this is the forum for the Amazon Fire 7" - 5th Gen 2015. I have CM 12.1 and it works on my device (Kindle Fire 7" 2015, codename KFFOWI). Sorry it didn't work out for you
True, Fire HDX is different to Fire. Nevertheless I would have expected, that at least classification of the devices (smartphone vs. tables) is equal. Thanks anyway!

As you are discovering custom ROMs for HDX sometimes identify the device as a phone vs tablet. Some HDX models do come with a LTE radio which may be a contributing factor. Fuller response provided in the HDX forum.

Hi Folks
Before we start , A bit of background as I've been reading these forums and I am aware how some may find this a contenious subject, So before anyone goes accusing me of any illegality let me say I have a Kindle Fire 2 and Kindle Fire HD, both in demomode as they were acquired from the Comet UK Firesale after the company went bankrupt late last , Unfortunately I don't think the staff where that dedicated to customer service at that point.
Right Down to business - So in the doing the research the obviously the Factory Cable Method and that's about it isn't it? I thought I have a little play around as my solder skills aren't the great.
The Firmware on the Device is 10.0.2.A I'd expect this to work on earlier firmware, Later ones however I'm not so sure, The Aforementioned Fire HD which I also have has had the Final Part of the process I'm going to describe fixed.
What You Need: Your Fingers and A Wifi network you can connect to!
1. Boot The Fire, Touch To Try The Fire and Run.
2. With the device in Potrait, Press in the search box , three options should appear below the search box ( Libraries , Stores and Web )
3. Press Web. I was the informed I had no network connection, and very nicely asked "If I wished to sign in?"
4. Press the Wireless Settings button which should take you to the wireless network settings. where you can configure a network
5. Download an apk file, any apk file will do , google code have lot, and I've heard this other site, I think it begins with an X They also have a couple
6. Pull the Nofication Bar Down, You should have a notification that the download is complete, Click to install
7. You'll Should Get a notification about non amazon prime apps not being allowed along with the option to change that setting,
8. Press the Settings button to take you into the Device menu. From there you can get into developer option and turn USB Debugging On!
9. An For the Icing on the cake , you can restart adb as root from your PC. as demo seems to have an insecure boot image. lol so you don't even need any root explioits.
Not much else to say other than "All you are demo modes belong to us", I'm glad I didn't go with plan A to update the firmware.
Note: Don't worry If it restart demo mode in the middle as your wifi connection settings are perisisted
Also Keep Unknown Application Sources off and you'll be able to run this process as many times as you like.
I'll post pictures etc later on as I've not removed demo yet. I've not remove demo mode yet.
Like I say this could be very specific to just this version the firmware
Hack On People!
Hi all,
I've had a Nook Color and a Nook Tablet. Loved them. But I don't do a lot that's technical with them. What I do is read free media (gutenberg and the like) and use the web browser. On each of those old Nooks I bypassed OOBE and enabled third party apps (not that I installed any).
I recently bought an HD+ (2.10 firmware) and I'd like to use it the same way. However, it appears that when I bypass OOBE, I do not get a 'web' nav button (or an email nav button).
I did diligently search for answers here. The closest I came was a year-old thread saying that if you bypass OOBE, you get no apps. That was for 2.05.
So my questions are (and you may assume that I won't be getting a B&N account to make it work, though I'll probably register with my wife's to see if there's any difference):
Can I get the browser to work if I bypass OOBE? (I'm assuming it's Chrome) If so, how?
If not, am I going to have to enable third party apps and sideload a launcher and browser? If that's so, any recommendations for them? For the record, I preferred the Tablet's browser to the Color's.
On the technical side, does Chrome (and the user manual) actually not exist on the HD+ until it's registered? (As in, they have to be downloaded from a registered Nook) (I suppose that's a little different way to ask the question)
Thanks for your help.
I don't know about chrome and whether it is available with oobe, but you can install third party apps by going to my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature and making a bootable CWM SD and flashing my enable unknown sources zip.
Also sometimes native apps like chrome are hidden by your profile settings. I can't remember exactly how to get at your profile settings but it should be explained in the B&N help online.

Leapinlar, I used your methods on my previous Nooks, so thanks for that. And I'll also use your current method on the HD+. I'll check on the profile thing, but my gut says it's bypassing the OOBE that's caising my pain, as all the manuals say you should have 5 nav buttons, and I onoy have 3. Also, I just powered it up and bypassed. No messing with profiles.
I think my test method will be to register with my wife's account. That will allow me to at least determine whether it's the bypassing that's the trouble. It does kind of throw me that the manual isn't present on the device.
Although it's completely nuts, leapinglar is right that apps can be hidden under the profile settings. In order to possibly help others, here's what I did.
1. Bypass OOBE.
2. Go to home screen by clicking the N button. Note that there are only 3 nav buttons: Library, Apps, and Store. Also notice that if you look in Apps, there are none.
3. In the lower left hand corner, there is an icon that looks like a list. Tap it, and amenu appears.
4. In the menu, tap Manage Content For Profiles. There will be an item for Apps. Open it.
5. There will be list of apps, with checkboxes next to each. Tap the checkboxes for the apps you want (for this exercise, be sure to check Chrome).
6. Tap Save.
7. Tap the back icon or click the N button to get back to the home screen.
The result is that now you will have a Web nav button.
I want to setup a HP Touchpad which supports restricted profiles (aka kids mode) so I can have my kids use the TouchPad but only give them access to a few apps and games I select and barring them from other apps, changing system settings, etc..
I just tried updating my TouchPad to JC's CM11 (cm-11-20140625-SNAPSHOT-jcsullins-tenderloin.zip), I was successful but restricted profiles don't seem to work in it. Details are below in case anyone wants to know.
I don't really care which CM version I install on the TouchPad, I just want one where restricted profiles work. If there's anyone out there who has used this specific feature successfully on their TouchPad, please let me know what ROM version you are using. Thanks!
My CM11 experience with restricted profiles:
When to Users, Add Restricted Profile. Did the Set Up Profile now and got the Welcome to CyanogenMod Wizard for the new profile, Select English, Google account setup - Select Skip, Setup your CyanogenMod account - Select Skip, Location Setting - nothing selected, Setup is complete - Select Finish and then got the message Unfortunately, CyanogenMod Account has Stopped. Then I got a Black Desktop. Back, Home, Windows button bar at bottom, Status bar shows Wifi, battery, time, the apps I selected to give that profile access to was not shown. I consistently get Unfortunately, System UI has stopped messages as well.
I recently retired my son's Galaxy Tab 2 (7") for a new SM-710 (updated OTA to 5.1.1). The old Tab 2 (running CM12) was setup in multi-user mode with him as a restricted user. It worked great - I could limit his access on an app by app basis, his data didn't cross-over into my data, he could log into services with his own account etc etc.
So I had intended to setup his new SM-710 the same way - me as the primary user, him as a restricted user. One HUGE problem - the Samsung (TouchWiz) version of Lollipop seems to be missing a critical menu item that is present on stock Lollipop devices. I can't find the "add users from lockscreen" option in the USER settings. On stock devices there is a menu button (top right) where this option is located. It is usually defaulted to unchecked, however on the Samsung version, the device behaves as if the option is checked, and yet there is no menu item to uncheck. This results in both the "GUEST" and "ADD USER" items appearing in the multi-user lockscreen menu when the device is locked. This is a problem for a multitude of reasons. My son could simply create a new user from the lockscreen and use that account to bypass all the restrictions I have placed on his account. Moreover, anyone else could do the same thing, making it impossible to secure the device.
I have tried a few fixes that I found here and elsewhere. All of them required me to root the device, none of them worked (build.prop edits, sql db edits etc). Happy to describe in detail what I tried, but didn't want to make the post any longer that it had to be). Has no one else noticed this problem/error/bug? Am I missing something obvious?
Any help / insight would be appreciated.
Have a look at Samsungs' "Kids Mode", available in the Galaxy Apps store. It is supposed to be their solution for handing your tablet or phone to your children. It requires a pin code to leave the Kids Mode. However, I suspect it is targeted at rather youngish kids.
My T815, which is still at 5.0.2, doesn't even have the options you describe. I'm a bit annoyed that Samsung has spent time disabling features that just come for free from Google.
The build.prop edit should have worked according to other threads. I'm not rooted, so I can't tell.
What would happen if I deleted the data in my fire prime photo and fire launcher apps? My device is a kindle fire 5th gen 7 running Fire OS 5.4.0.0 .
Pretty much nothing. If you are registered to Amazon, your info is on the cloud. The data will just pile up again. About the only way to at least limit the effect is to install a firewall and begin manually deleting the data of each app. I use NetGuard. If you buy the log and filter options (one time fee), you can block host names and manually block IPs that apps try to connect to. I believe 'Lock Down' is free. While setting everything up, you can immediatly stop all apps from using the internet, and choose which ones can and cant access it by selecting 'Allow In Lock Down Mode' from the drop down menu of each app in the list.
If you are a little more tech savvy and know how your way around IP ranges, you can block entire ranges manually with NoRoot Data Firewall. I started with this one, but I grew more attached to NetGuard.
Savvytech... and I have been experimenting trying to somehow 'break' an Amazon app. (I was successful only once. Somehow managed to delete ALL app data and it's stored data, including system apps. Haven't been able to repeat the process yet.)
Until then, aside from shutting off WiFi, and a firewall, you're stuck. However Brevent does a good job at killing and "disabling" most of Amazon's apps, until reboot. That's where I found Autorun Manager came in handy. It stops a good portion of Amazon's apps from booting when you power on, allowing Brevent to try and stop them from running once boot completes. Be advised though, with Brevent, you have to run a code through ADB every time you reboot the device. It gives you instructions upon installation.
Another tool, good to clean app cache and other junk, All In One Toolbox. It will at some point ask for Accessibility access. To save it the trouble, go to Settings, Accessibility, Scroll to bottom, Select 'All In One', confirm selection. Amazon won't let you give it 'Usage Access', so you will need to install Activity Launcher. I made a thread here, where you can get some detailed steps. Open it, tap drop down at top left. Select 'All Activities.' Scroll to 'Settings' and tap it. Scroll to 'Apps With Usage Access'. Select 'All In One'. Disable access to any of the listed Amazon apps or services if you like. I have for quite sometime so I don't think any harm comes to it. Probably just irritate Amazon's servers a bit more.
Given the firewall, Autorun and Brevent, at any given time, I never have more than 8 to 10 Amazon services or apps running, All In One controls memory pretty well, but sometimes you are better off force stopping apps yourself. Brevent will eventually be able to tell you which apps will auto start. It will be able to disable their background processes, but not their main ones.
Thanks! I'll try yo use the info, got a lot to learn".Thanks again!
To DragonFire1024 , I have installed netguard, no root data firewall ,brevent , all in one toolbox, activity launcher, and auto run manager. I also have the permission remover apks and the testkey.pk8 and testify.x509.pen files in my apk storage folder. Have been playing around with them ( the apps ) and have had some success. I can now see data dropping for a change! I'm still have not done everything you suggested - have to get funds in to buy the paid versions,
but what I' be done so far has helped a lot. No root firewall is what I'm using now ( as is ) - was blocked but got in the second time in activity launcher removed the app usage of the apps you suggested. I am having a bit of trouble with Brevent - I have not learned how to find and use the command line on my PC.Need to get a bit more tech savvy so I can get root access on my fire when it becomes available. Til then I'll push on! Pardon my writing skills, are not so good. Thanks again for helping! I'll be back soon, maybe I can give a few more details next time.
I have been trying to start Brevent - found command line on windows PC, tried entering commands but PC will not respond found and downloaded windows platform tools zip, extracted but I'm still stuck.what next?( I downloaded platform tools on my kindle fire 5th gen. , running fire OS 5.4.0.0 )
