Help with Nexus 6 stuck in demo mode - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have searched the XDA forums and have not found anything that pertains to this (I hope I didnt miss something), if I did miss something could you point me in the right direction? Here is the problem:
I recently got a Nexus 6 from my work, it was a store demo. I am having problems unlocking the bootloader in order to flash to the stock firmware. I have tried using the nexus root tool kit, adb, fastboot and android sdk, but to no avail. I am posting here because I am new to this and may have missed something. The phone is stuck in the demo mode and all the settings are locked, meaning that I cannot get into developer mode and check unlock oem bootloader, and cannot get into any other type of setting to take apps or switch security settings. When I try and open the developer options or other settings, I get a picture of a padlock with a caption of "This device is locked" and " Certain device features are unavailable for demonstrative purpose". It is running Marshmallow 6.0.1 and the build # is MMB29Q. I already have all the stock .img's and need a little help getting past this lock. So any help would be great.
Thank you

if its running in demo mode, then it is also running different software. since its on different software, i dont know if its possible to enable bootloader unlock in the dev options. if you cant enable that option, then the bootloader is not unlockable. but that all is just my guess.

Installing one of the OTA images may help with this.

I tried to install OTA using adb, kept getting a message saying "missing APK file". Any ideas?

So, I have not found a way to get out of the demo mode. I went ahead and did a factory reset on the phone, bug mistake. Now I have the problem of not knowing how to login due to the fact that I cannot get past the google sign in part after the factory reset. Any ideas?
Thank you

Bypassing factory reset protection can be done, but it isn't easy. For your sake, let's hope that you don't have the latest security updates installed on the phone.

The build is MMB29Q running 6.0 I found a back door kinda, I can get into the phone but will not let me get into developer mode doing this, and reset the phone, still needs original google sign in. I added a new google account under users in settings,to see if that would help, but still no luck getting into developer mode or other options. bootloader locked, so cannot get into adb shell. Any help, difficult or not, would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Get the original sign-in or have the original owner remove the device from the account. Those are far easier to accomplish than attempting to bypass FRP.

There is no "original" owner as it was a store demo. I have emailed the gmail account that was associated with it but no reply. I noticed that all the store demos had the same gmail associated with them. I believe that they may have been set up in mass, then sent out to the stores.

I work for a Verizon retailer in the U.S.. I believe that the people or person who set up the demo mode and set the google login were the ones who the retailer got the phones from. As I have asked the procurement manager, and he does not know either. They have a repair center located inside the store, this store refurbishes old store demos. I used to work for that department, now I am a field tech for that same retailer. They were having a hard time getting rid of the store demo on this phone, because there is no place to put a pass word in under the demo app, that we can find. They asked me to help, I could not figure it out on my own, so I came here to ask for some help.

I assumed that logins/passwords for all demo phones are the same. That's usual in shops etc.You could try the login used by 'refurbish department.
When not successful..... call Motorola.

That's the problem, the people in the repair/refurbish department do not know the logins/password either, that is why they asked me to help unlock these phones, so they could sell/ use motherboards for repairs. Motorola it is then, unless there is a way around the lock, which I was hoping to find here.
Thank you

I don't think you will find on XDA how to bypass Google's anti-theft stuff. It's against the xda-rules.
It is the retailer or Motorola!
Btw when the phones have been sold as 'demo' (cheaper); I don't think the retailer will help.

flash the factory image for android 5.0, set it up, put in your own security then flash android 6.0.1. i say 5.0 because thats before googles security went into affect.

now this isnt an official way around googles security, nor a non official way, its a way to fix human error. thats all.

I need to install Metrotalk on my new phone and I need YOUR help

I searched and searched and cannot find a clear answer to this, so I apologize in advance if I'm asking something redundant.
I recently purchased an Icon and my most used app on a daily basis was Metrotalk. I was part of the beta and purchased it as soon as it was available eagerly. The dev was awesome and updated the app in a way that set a high standard. Well, with the threat from Google of blocking access to Google Voice for 3rd party apps, the developer decided to unpublish the app just weeks prior to me finally upgrading to a WP8 device (which he added numerous exclusive features for).
Here's the deal though: the xap is still available for download from it's page on the store. Is there any way for me to get install this manually on my phone still? If so, can anyone direct me a thread here that tells me how to do it?
Thanks, folks. Here's to hope ...
Does your phone have an SD card slot? If so, download the .XAP from the web store and put it on the SD card, then (with card in the phone) open the Store hub. There should be an option to install the app from the SD card. I can't promise it'll work but it's worth trying.

Unfortunately it doesn't.
I've read about developer unlocking my phone, using a xap deployer and several other things but I'm hesitant to go that route without knowing for sure it would work. I'm not a developer and I'm not looking to sideload a bunch of apps or anything like that. I just want this one that I purchased back really, really bad. Yeah, it's that useful of an app for me.
When it's unpublished, there's no way to redownload it. You need an unencrypted xap for that (not from the store). Best way would be to ask the developer, and if he gives it to you you can just download the windows phone SDK, register the phone & deploy the app.

Well, the worst that could happen is him saying no. You don't put your device security to risk, it's not illegal and should be ok ^^ if you don't want the whole SDK and don't need it, you can get the "lite sdks" from arnold link here: http://dhost.info/vink/avink/forums/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=4 it has everything needed to deploy the app.
Tried to contact the dev 3 different ways and no response. This sucks.

I tried there too, along with email and reddit.
What I don't understand is why the pressure to remove the app from the store when other apps (such as Free Talk) are still available on there? Was Metrotalk singled out because it was awesome???
These are rhetorical questions, as I know no one here can answer them and the developer only talks about Metromail now ...

Make sure to provide a decent reason - I kinda lied about not using my new phone, but reality is i'd really sell it if I could not unlock it and get rid of ads.
I guess, simply saying you want adaway installed and that needs root shall be enough. Last part skips voids-warranty-are-you-sure? exchange.
A friend of mine called UK support on viber on may 10th, but ended up with same uk support mail exchage asking him for details, warning about risks and got his code a day later than me I believe.
He told them he wanted to flash clean firmware or something like that... be creative.

If you already have your unlock code it should be fine.
If you don't you should still be able to use DC to get it.
But this is for current phones, for future ones we may not even get unlock code from DC (as P20 can not, for example)
Which ends the ROM scene.
No need to go and unlock it. No developer will support this phone ( or Huawei) for buy long..
Luckily, due to Treble, existing customers will not be left in the cold. Not sure what Huawei will gain from all of this though. They also lost me as a customer. And my friends, and my family.

Just boycott their products : )
I think it makes sense for them to avoid users from unlocking their devices. I have seen several people returning their devices for installing custom stuff badly and then when they revert back to stock, some features are lost (again, for doing things the wrong way). Stupid people costs any company lots of money, ergo, they rather remove the feature and remain safe.
Any idea how to register for an account on the Huawei website? It doesn't give an option for the US (or Canada for that matter).

Which Note 9 do i have?

I picked up my Note 9 from Rent A Center, it said "duos" on the box. It says sm-n9600, build number ends in hu1arg6. I'm asking because the way rent a center has their phones configured, set up is kinda weird and I may want to root, etc. So I want to make sure I don't have compatibility issues. One thing I did was run a program that shows it has a sd845. Not sure how accurate that program was, forgot the name.

You have the HK/Latin america snap version, your bootloader can be unlocked!
There isnt as much development for this version typically as on the exynos but at least your not stuck with a crappy device thats locked down tighter than a drum.
Yo, I have a note 9 from rent a center as well and was hoping to get a little help here.
I have the N9600 ending in JHDF
I do believe that its unlocked but rent a center did a few modifications that I can't gain access to developer options. I did find a way in by stopping the set up process and get into developer options but I couldnt turn on usb debugging which is where I am.
How can I get into that to root? Can I flash the original N9600 to see if I can remove rent a center setup? Or can I straight up flash twrp and root from there? I probably have to flash some other file but I'm unsure. Any kind of help or direction would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

It's probably restricted in some way due to the terms of agreement they offer when you buy the phone from them. If it's paid off they should be able to remove it for you.

My guess is they probably buy those because they are more easily able to install their tracking and lock-down software on it. They probably have the bootloader unlocked, a custom rom with their software installed, and then re-lock it all.
There was a fella on the note 8 forums a while back with similar questions with a renta center device.

Yup. They use the 9600. And if you pay it off in 6 months, then the phone costs $1,871. But if you use the full 78 weeks to pay it off, then it costs $3,119. That's insane.
My concern would be the original owner would stop making their weekly RAC payments, and you get locked out of your Note 9. I believe that's what happened to the guy in the Note 8 forums.
I would assume that the prices from RAC are different depending on the region because in California right now the 6 month buy out cost us 1400 and at the long term is about 1900 which us still extremely high but some people have very bad credit or no credit at all and have to resort to something like this. The only other reason I did get us is because it has an unlocked bootloader and will be able to root it and start moding it to my preference etc. But I will have to wait till I pay it off now. I was hoping someone had already found a way around RAC type of lockdown.
Oh my god... How do they convince people to pay over three times the price for this phone?

I mean... Priorities? There are any number of other smartphone alternatives besides a three thousand dollar phone that's actually worth less than 1k. If you're that desperate to obtain the latest Note device maybe shift that determination onto sorting out one's personal finances? That's just my thoughts.

First of all, I have my priorities and my finances are well in order. I can go on about credit, interest rates and over pricing for a smartphone, you dont know what I need this smartphone and its definitely not not all for pleasure. For you to go out of your way and quote me on something like this and judge me on my finances is just plan ignorant but if you amuses you, go right ahead quote me, I wont play your game and simply ignore it from here on out. I'm just here for help and guidance on information about the phone and root.

Why do you need to bypass FRP? It's used to prevent theft of your device so why would you even want that?

Perhaps OP bought a pixel second hand and the phone was shipped via carrier instead of in person? That's nothing unreasonable.

Then go back to the seller and either get a refund or have them remove their account, no?

What if the seller ghosted OP? Have you heard about scams? Although, if @shawnbro4 believes he/she was sold a stolen device, go to the police. They'll go after the seller hopefully.
There are ways to bypass FRP on a Pixel, but I feel like it violates forum rules by providing such information.

No, police can't do anything unfortunately. This type of thing happens thousands of times every single day, all over the world. In the US at least, it's considered a civil matter - not criminal. They'll take down a report if you insist on filing one, but they can't - and won't - get involved

Uhhhh, "(model) FRP bypass" seems like a great place to start

I know that Samsung built this phone for Google, but it's not a Samsung phone and you cant use Odin to update firmware or anything else. Feel free to try, if you dumb enough.

I couldn't care less about "odid".
But you directly contradicted yourself with the rest.

You are right. I hve not had to think about bypassing frp since my old Galaxy s8, the process is now a little vague.
After reasearching, It is much easier to do now.
You can absolutely bypass FRP. Using Wifi and Google Assistant, you can reset the phone via settings to bypass. Worked on my Google Locked Verizon Google Pixel 4a 5g.
