Switch Wifi AP based och signal strenght - Tasker Tips & Tricks

Hi guys,
I have two wifi AP:s at home with the same SSID and password (TP-Link AV 500) and I want to automatically switch to the AP with the strongest signal.
Anyone have a good profile for this? I am running Marshmallow.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your answer.
I have already been looking at this tutorial actually but I have not tried it since comments to the video says that the plugin used ``Wifi connect´´ doesn´t work with MM.
Another thing is that the profile is for switching between routers with different SSID:s. I want to switch between AP:s in my home network connected to the same router/SSID.

Can you be a little bit more specific? Have you ever been able to connect to wifi stations anyway?
are you sure that your router wifi is enabled? and broadcasting the ssid?
Sorry its a home adhoc wifi

(solved) note wifi disconnecting :(

Hi all. i have a problem with my note. on some instances if i try downloading large files(for games or navigon maps, or just browsing on some sites, etc) after 10 15 seconds the wifi adapter shuts down/resets and the connection is lost. the adapter restarts and connects to the wifi in 2 3 seconds but is very frustrating to try downloading something many times before succeeding. anyone else has this problem? i searched the forum but didnt find anyone else with this problem. any ideas as to what is causing this problem?

Re: note wifi disconnecting
Hmm. Try changing the router wifi settings to transmit only b/g and retest.
Had the same issue, please tell us what version and kernel rom you are using?
->I had only when using CM, on stock GB and the XXLSC roms, I did not encounter this problem (also with cm 10.1 I seem to have a stable connection again)
**I do want to note, that it can't be possible to have a worse connection when on CM vs TW, but I have experienced it this way. So I can onlyh draw my conclusions from that...(I don't have any developer knowledge whatsoever)
Re: note wifi disconnecting
I would start by un plugging the router and plug it back in.

baseband version: N7000 xxlpt. kernel version N7000 xxlq3. android 4.0.3. This issue was present from day one. but never tried downloading large files from another router and my htc legend never had this issue with the router. will try to see if the router is the problem today and get back to you. tx to all in advance

Try this:
Dial *#0011#*
Press the menu button on service mode screen
Select wifi
Turn "wifi power save mode" off
It seems like this is only working on samsung roms. I'm on CM10.1 and I have to dial *#*#0011#*#* to access the service mode.
Also there is no wifi entry in the menu.
Re: note wifi disconnecting
just downloaded a 700 +mb file with no problem. i set the router to b and g only. seems it was the frickin router. tx a lot to all 4 ur support.

CHanging to b/g works
Hi,
I have router DIR 855 and had the same issue with my note. Wifi kept disconnecting whereas all the other devices at home stay connected. So it was clear that Note was the one that had the issue. Changing the 2,4ghz to b/g setting helped but I would like a stable connection on my 5 ghz band and that one keeps disconnecting. Any idea how to fix that? I am using NAS and the speed is much better when using 5ghz instead of the old crappy 2,4ghz.

For me too 5GHz is not stable on note... Why not use the router on Auto and then use the settings on NAS to use only 5GHz
Please explain

Hi,
Can you please elaborate on how to do that?
My router has two different bands and it cannot switch between the two. What do you mean by NAS setting?
Depends if your router can run simultaneous dual band.

Same problem here. Im guessing it could be the amount of wifi traffic you have in your area?
Could also be some routers. You could try mixed modes b+n+g or just n etc on your router maybe that solves it.

As said most likely your router.
Download and install wifi analyzer and see what channel is best for you. If possible disable b+g and only use n.
Sometimes simply rebooting the router will do it.

Disconnecting WiFi

Hello,
I've used my Mi A2 around 2 weeks now and I'm really satisfied with the phone. However, I got some annoying issue about wifi. When the signal strength of wifi is not so strong (below -70 dbm), it tends to disconnect for around 10-20 sec and then reconnected again. This happened to me like 10 times since I got the phone. And wifi works perfectly without disconnections when the signal strength is strong enough.
Does anyone experience this issue? Or I got a defected device?
Thank you
Same here, sometimes it just disconnects ...

It is a normal stock android behavior, because android detects that signal of wi-fi is to low, and tries to switch automatically to GSM mobile data, or to another wi-fi if it is available in the area.
I don't have this happen but wifi signal is strong and also; gsm data is turned off.
That *may* help to turn that off possibly, as it obviously can't (now) switch to it?

Even if mobile network is off? Is there a way to change such behavior? I tried to find in the setting but what I just found is Aggressive WiFi to mobile handover, which was already turned off.

I think that it is called smart wifi, or wifi+ option in other types of android OS, and here it is just a automatic option in stock android i guess.
I don't mind it, because it will change my wifi router AP if it get stuck, and need an reboot, so it will automatically switch to another closest one that works.
You better think of some way to get a better signal then to turn off this function.
Try with aps like this on the link.

The thing is that wifi also disconnected when there's no other nearby networks to switch to. I did something to get better signal in my room but this still happened sometimes.

Pixel 5 wi-fi calling on 3UK

Hi,
I'm seriously considering getting a good refurbished Pixel 5, but I would like to know if it's possible to set wi-fi calling preferences on 3UK.
To explain, I live in an area with very spotty cellular coverage so WiFi calling is a must have, but unless I can set the phone to prefer WiFi calling over cellular calling, I have to put my phone into airplane mode in my house because there is just enough cellular signal strength to prevent the phone from automatically using wi-fi for calls. Failure to use airplane mode results in many dropped calls because the signal isn't strong enough to support the call.
Any assistance gratefully received.
Thanks

So it's possible to set the preferences to use Wi-fi calling whenever there's a wi-fi connection, even if there's a weak cellular signal?
This is on the UK 3 network?
Thanks

It'll give you the option whether there's WiFi or not. It's either on or off.
Yes, 3uk
Thanks, but I don't think I explained my question very well.
What I'm wondering is, when you turn wi-fi calling on, is there another setting to prefer calling via wi-fi, or calling via cellular?
Cheers for your help.

I know this may not be what you're looking for but it may help..
I am on Pixel 5 Android 12L stock ROM
When turning WIFI Calling on, you get this menu option.
I'm imagining if have WIFI Calling options, then the menus would be the same, being the same phone/firmware.
But I obviously can't confirm.
Thanks!
That's exactly what I was looking for.
Which network are you on?

Just a shot in the dark, but changing your default language to US English might work. Here in Canada I had to do that to get "Hold for Me" working

Thanks for the suggestion but I think the availability of the wi-fi calling preferences options are based on the mobile network.
I'm currently using a Samsung Galaxy S20FE because it has Bixby Routines, which lets me disable the cellular radios when the phone connects to my home WiFi network. Obviously, this isn't as elegant as allowing me to set a wi-fi calling preference.
The point is that this is a dual SIM phone - I've noticed that it offers wi-fi calling preferences for my O2 UK SIM but not for my 3UK SIM.
I don't think I'm going to get any luck with this unless I change network.
Thanks to all for your assistance.

Very interesting.
Now I don't use it, I should start looking into it, but I just don't have any uses off the top of my head, like what I foresee could work to your advantage.
Instead of Bixby, why not give tasker a try? It should be able to allow you to do what Bixby does and probably more.
You should def. be able to set up a Tasker "Routine" that allow you to disable the cellular radio when you connect to WIFI network, and maybe even a Tasker for setting the WIFI calling preference?
I wish you the best of luck with everything!

I actually tried Tasker first (I've used it many times over the years) but it isn't able to toggle Airplane mode without having to either root the phone or grant specific permissions via ADB (each time the phone is rebooted).
In case you are wondering, I have configured Airplane mode to leave WiFi and Bluetooth untouched, so it actually only toggles the cellular radio on and off.
Since Bixby Routines are "baked in" on Galaxy devices, it has no restrictions on setting Airplane mode on/off. Obviously, this solution is only available on Galaxy devices, which is why I'm using this S20FE 5G as my daily driver at the moment.
With any other devices, I have to remember to turn airplane mode on when I'm at home to force wi-fi calling. The problem is that I often forget to turn airplane mode off again when I'm out and about.
Thanks again to everyone for your help and suggestions.
