MMS on Textra (Android N) - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone experiencing MMS failing to send or receive on Android N? I was fine on dev 3 and when I switch to stock messenger I'm fine although I don't get any notifications that it doesn't send or receive like i get from Textra.
I've tried the manual settings in Android and in Textra and even turned off wifi to try it but it doesn't work. A reboot will work for awhile and then eventually it'll fail.

I know this is a year old but just in case you or anyone else is racking their brains out re: MMS failure to send or receive - looks like a Nougat issue that can only be rectified by a carrier firmware update:

Thanks. I moved over to pulse SMS since it allows me to get texts to my smart watch while away from my phone and on the data connection on my watch.

MMS not functioning while on Wifi

I have a weird issue that when my nexus 6 is connected to wifi, it can't send or receive mms messages. In the Google messaging app, it shows mms as failing to download. The second I turn off wifi though, everything goes through, both sending and receiving. My nexus 5 on lollipop had the same issue. Has anyone else on 5.0 experienced this? I couldn't find anything on the AOSP bug list. I am unencrypted, rooted and have TWRP.

That's been my experience with every device I've ever owned on both Sprint and T-mobile. Nothing out of the ordinary there
That's unfortunate. What's weird is that my nexus 5 with kitkat had it working just fine. I guess I'll just hop the wifi calling fixes it whenever that comes out.
My Nexus 6 doesn't like to send texts while on wifi. It takes a very long time for them to send but if I flip wifi off they send immediately. I haven't tried MMS but I suspect it would be a similar experience. I just leave wifi off at home now. I get LTE anyway and have unlimited data.
I had this problem at first, but seems to work fine now. Only thing different I did was change APN protocol to IPV4/IPV6 instead of IPV6. I read somewhere switching it to IPV4 solves MMS problems, but so far the combo has worked for me. Not sure if that was the issue though, worth a shot.
Now if I could fix my general signal issue, that'd be great =/
I hope this helps. It worked for me when I had the note 4 but now I'm getting a Nexus, don't have one to test this on yet but you guys can.
In short you can try setting up an APN with the MMS port as 80 because right now its probably blank.

I'm having the same issue on Cricket with my Nexus 6. Rooted, stock 6.0. With my wifi turned ON, I can not send or receive any grouped messages. I cannot send or receive any MMS messages.
I use the stock messaging app.
There doesn't seem to be a solution. I've quadruple checked the APN. Made sure the MMS Port is set to 80, nothing has worked. I feel other solutions like Using a Different Messaging App, or remove every App are bandaids for symptoms. Not solutions for the problem.

The issu could be due to the app not switching over to data properly when needed. This could also be a radio issue among other things. Without a logcat to tell where and why it is failing everyone is just shooting in the dark.

A logcat is trouble shooting 101. Just search for how to do one and you will get a few tut. It does need root sometimes so keep that in mind.
I had major mms issues on T-Mobile. I did some searching and changed the apn. I also now use hangouts for SMS/mms, and all is well again. I could not send mms at all before with WiFi on. Make sure your apn is correct for your carrier. Mmsc was blank right out of the box on T-Mobile.

I am on T mobile and it had worked fine until 6.0.
I was on cricket and had this issue; drove me insane. I finally ported my number to Google Voice and started a new line with cricket. With GV handling all the SMS/MMS through Hangouts, I haven't had any issues, whether it be on wifi or not. Might be worth considering.

MMS issues Nexus 6 on Verizon

So today I switched to Verizon from At&t. I had no issues prior to today with sending pictures or group text. Now I can do neither. :crying:
I've tried talking to Verizon and Google. Both have no solution. I've also tried doing a factory reset and I'm still having the same issue.
Anyone know how to get into the APN settings? I can only get to them via the hangouts app. But it doesn't give all the fields I'm used to seeing in typical APN settings.
Anyone run into this and have a solution?
Swap your Sim card

When you say switched, do you mean you used AT&T on your N6 and switched to a Verizon sim? If so, you need to factory reset. You don't change APN settings on Verizon though, the sim card sets them.

I already tried a factory reset. And I'm still having the same issue. If I'm still having the same issue tomorrow, I'm going to swap the sim card.
I think there is or was a problem with MMS on VZ and using Hangouts or Google Voice. I read somewhere that this was being taken care of by VZ soon.
Yep -- I've been having issues with receiving SMS / MMS messages on Verizon too. Sending works fine (tested and confirmed) but I can't receive anything. It used to work but it hasn't for me since last Wednesday or so.. Maybe they're making changes before they launch the Nexus 6 themselves? Who knows. It caught me off guard though as I used SMS for my Google two factor auth. Had to switch to Google Authenticator because of this.
I use Hangouts and do not have any issues with VZW MMS sending or receiving. I live in Chicagoland.

Just to confirm it's a Hangouts Verizon issue, I'm on the OG Samsung Galaxy Nexus and have been having this issue for roughly a month now. Not sure what prompted it, but it's been plaguing me for some time now.

Not OP, but I have. I had a single SMS message sneak through last night -- much to my surprise. I haven't been able to receive SMS / MMS for about two weeks now. Over that period of time, I have sent myself multiple "test" messages from other numbers as well as other people's phones. Only a single, unrelated text has come through. SMS / MMS works as expected with this SIM in my old Galaxy Nexus. Very odd.
N6 on VZW
I have an N6 o Verizon and I have not had issues with sending or receiving mms or sms and I got my phone almost a month ago. Only thing I don't like is when I'm on a call, if I get group messages or a picture message, I may have to tap to manually download after the call because the phone doesn't do voice and data at the same time.

friend of mine on pure sent me sms and mms this morning and i sent both back from my note 4 and no problems on either end.
Hey guys, I am having a weird issue here. I have had the Nexus 6 for about 2 months now and everything has been working fine. I am using hangouts and have been able to send and receive MMS no problem, up until a few days ago. I now cannot send MMS, but I can receive them. I've pulled the SIM, restarted, tried using Messenger and Handcent. When using Handcent I would get an error about the APN settings. I set them to what Verizon has listed for MMS and it was still erroring out. I am not back on Hangouts and still can't send an MMS message. Any ideas? I guess the next step would be a factory reset...
PS - I am unlocked, rooted, and un-enecrypted running the latest stock OTA ROM.
Bump? Anyone? I am still unable to send MMS. I can receive them just fine though. I did a TWRP factory reset and still was unable to send. I might have to flash back to bone stock or wait until Friday when Verizon officially supports this thing.
I only have ever used Textra on my phone (Verizon, rooted, OTA, encrypted) no texting issues I am aware of.

Thanks for the help.
Tried Textra, no luck (it's beautiful and I will probably stick with it!)...I will start from square 1, hopefully a full reinstall will fix this.
I don't know if you saw it in the options but there is a switch to try to "fix" MMS within Textra . Something to try anyway...

I had a problem for the first time the other day.
It ended up being a host file MOAB (Mother Of all Ad Blockers) I added to Adaway ad blocker app.
Did some googling and it seems others have had the same problem.
Just throwing it out there.
I am hoping to get some input from others. I had the note 2 running CM prior to my Nexus 6. I say this because I don't know if CM ran MMS/group messaging different than stock, but here is the scenario:
When on CM, if I sent or received a group text, all the replies were in the same thread. Very convenient for obvious reasons. However, on my N6, if someone starts/sends me a group message all the replies end up in the same thread. If I start and send a group message, the first message shows one thread with everyone in it, but when people start to reply, each message comes individually and not a part of the group thread.
Is this normal? Is there a way to get all messages in one thread?

DUDE!!! YOU JUST FIXED MY PROBLEM!!!
I disabled the MOAB host file in Ad Away and now I can send!! Did you figure out if there is a specific host file you need to white list to keep MOAB and send MMS?
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!

OK!! I added
mms.vtext.com
to the whitelist in AdAway with the MOAB host file and it sends just fine! Thank you very much for your help!!!
EDIT: corrected the above list, I had an extra "X" in after the "V"

Rcs

Just noticed this morning when texting the wife
The 6.0 update included rcs for the stock messaging app
Works over WiFi calling and video calling works as well
I've seen people report this but whenever I tried it's just the same regular one as L. Does it only work over WiFi calling? But switched to cm now so I guess it doesn't matter.
RCS?
Yes, I'm curious, what is RCS?
Rich communication services (T-Mobile advanced messaging) its similar to imessage or WhatsApp just allows you to see when someone has read or is typing also allows for sending of larger MMS sizes I believe.
It must only work between G4's because i only see it when texting my friend who has one but nobody else.
My wife has a galaxy s5 and I can see it when she's texting me and she also see's it when I'm texting her.
hmmm, I wonder why mine doesn't work with others. Maybe i need to do a reset, since my wifi is acting up also.
It only works with other devices that have the RCS update.
How can you turn RCS off? I like to ignore sms messages frequently and don't want the sender to know I'm not getting back right away.

MMS come but MMS don't leave.

Symptoms: I can receive and send regular SMS just fine. Calls 100% , Quality is what it should be up here in the mountains. However MMS messages I can receive but I can't send them including group messages that come in as MMS.
Rrcently took the phone back bone stock. Full firmware flash of the latest out on the web site. It started working so I flashed Cyanide with stock kernel and it was working. Flashed my favorite kernel and then the issue happened again. So back to stock and it's only hit and miss if i can send.
Would this be a hardware issue? Software issue? Bad network in my area? When I get it working it will sometimes stop doing it until I reflash the stock kernel. I'm trying to get pointed in the right direction to figure out why
Then I can fix it.

This will be hard to figure out as many things can effect it. The flashing I think has less to do with it then the act of it rebooting. Forcing a reconnect to the network could be what is causing it to work for a while. I would run a logcat and see if it picks something up.

MMS no longer auto retrieves with oreo

I made the switch to oreo several weeks ago and have not been able to get any MMS messages to automatically turn the data on.
I've tried quite a few messaging apps to make sure it wasnt that and have tried several different APN settings for Cricket.
At this point it just seems like I may have missed something when flashing over to Oreo (N95OU version).
Has anyone else experienced this and found a fix for it?

No suffering here. Awesome battery life. Everything works just like it should. Are you on the official crc2 oreo release? I'm actually using crc5 but even on crc2 I didn't have that problem.

I'm literally having the same problem. Driving me nuts
Got to your settimgs and reset your iternet settingsa amd mobile alsonit wil do it also after that it will work you will get the mms
any work around with not able to send sms? I ahve the note 8 N9500. before I can send sms with att and tmobile sims as I have dual sim. after I rooted I can't send anymore sms. apns are all correct, wipe the phone even to factory settings. then Even tried the revert to original firmware not working yet. anybody that had the same problem with sending sms after update?
Bump.. anyone found a solution to this? I updated to Oreo on Verizon note 8, and MMS stopped auto retrieving MMS. Now everytime there's a group msg, I have to turn off WiFi and click the download button to download msgs, timestamp will be messed up tho.
Please anyone know how to fix this, it's annoying. I want to go back to nought if I cantget this to work.
Couldn't download mms on my note8 after software "upgrade". Took my note 8 to the Samsung guru at Best Buy. She got rid of downloaded messaging apps, told me I should be using the original firmware. Set it up. Turned on data and it worked. I began downloading mms immediately.

MMS works when data is turned on. It's just that when data is turned off or when both WiFi and data is turned on, MMS does not auto retrieve. It used to auto retrieve on 7.1.1 when data is turned off or both WiFi and data turned on. When data turned off, MMS used to auto turned on data temporarily to download the MMS, but not anymore. I really want to fix this. It's very annoying. Now, It will just tell me there's a MMS message to download
