Canadian OnePlus 3 discussion thread - OnePlus 3 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hey guys just thought I'd start a thread for us Canadians to share information and also our experiences with the OnePlus 3. I just got mine this Monday and so far I'm very happy with it. What about you?

Got mine two weeks ago and loving it. Just like when I got my OPO years ago, I had to adjust my APN settings for my 4g to work properly.

I'm on Rogers BTW

Same here, on Rogers. Just got mine today, had to change the APN from chatr to Rogers LTE. No problems. Absolutely love it.

Have you had a oneplus device before?

On virgin mobile in Ontario. No issues and no need to change the APN .

I had the one plus one which I had traded for an LG G3 and back then I felt like I was the one who came out on top. I 0assed on the op2 and opx due to the lack of NFC. It was a deal breaker for me. This one plus 3 rooted with xposed is sweet. I really don't miss my s7 edge, yet...
Seeing as you're with Rogers you don't miss VoLTE? I'm trying to find a way to get it to work.

My signal was dropping constantly from 3g to h+. Switched the APN to Rogers LTE and it's so much better. Make sure you change these settings.

I'm on Bell in New Brunswick and didn't need to change the APN or anything.

There probably won't be any way to get VoLTE working unless Rogers decides to sell this device and add it to the list of VoLTE capable handsets. I went through all the hoops with my Nexus 5x trying to get it to work. Even the 6p (which they sell) isn't added to the list of capable handsets and therefore does not get VoLTE.

Yeah... man I tried EVERYTHING, everything with my 5x and 6p. There's more in the op3 build.prop tho, so maybe there's a chance. Maybe. Rogers needs to pull their heads out of their a** and just open up network, let the phone decide if it's able to support VoLTE.

Can't have that. They want everyone buying handsets from them on contract. Not unlocked.

I bought the s6 edge, note 5, s7 edge and I'm going to buy the note 7 when it comes out. That's 3 contracts I'll have payed off in 2 years. The least the can do is open up their network to my other devices.

Hey guys anyone having issues with some widgets not populating after reboot? For me it's news and weather and the android authority widgets. I have to remove and re add both or either after each reboot.

Just got mine a couple days ago. It's so fast! Pretty light, and much easier to hold than my Note 2 which has served for more than 3 years and died 2 days before OP3 arrived. Finger print log is instant but sometimes it shows errors like: not recognized or finger move too fast. Another issue palm rejection is not working very well. Also enabling adaptive brightness sometimes make the phone very dark. Hopefully, these issues can resolved quickly.

Fido. Came from OPO. Anyone notice that mobile signal strength notification in the status bar icon is less than the OPO on LTE? I still get about -110dBm so not sure about the difference in the status bar icon.

Loving my 1+3 , been on it for a week now, can't imagine going back to my old phone. Anyone having weak signals on the Telus network?

Has anyone received the new update 3.2.1 without doing the VPN trick??
Juat checked now and still haven't received it.

I've made my decision....

I have both the G4 and the S6, as you may or may not know the S6 is unlockable and has had root for a while now. Despite that, I have decided to keep my G4, the potential locked in this phone is way too much to give up on. Odd thing is, the G4
doesnt seem to have had its radios tweaked or optimized, the S6 is a touch faster both on WiFi and LTE. The downside is
the bloat ball called touchwiz. It's choppy and eats a TON of ram. UX 4.0 is far and away better. As far as the cameras go, the
camera on the G4 is faster at getting locked in on what i'm shooting, but when zoomed in, the picture almost looks like an
oil painting. Once we do eventually get the G4 unlocked, I hope we get a camera mod much like the one I had for the G3.
I'm also looking forward to viper4android, that's definitely a must have for Google music imo. Anyway, hopefully we'll get
our beasts unlocked soon.
I agree totally. I had the s6 for a while. It has some awesome features and the camera is great, but it always was buggy and the ram issue was horrible. The G4 may not be perfect but I am enjoying it a lot more than my s6.

I concur with both of you. I had the S6 Edge and sold it for the G4. I'm just surprised we not only don't have root yet, but that there hasn't really been any direct talk of if anyone is close. That is a big concern to me. From my experience, there are usually folks chatting about their progress (or lack thereof). Anyway, love the device so far....

i agree too on going with the G4, i sold my nexus 5 and got the G4 before i even checked in here to see if it was rootable/unlockable yet
and the reason no one is talking about it is that so many people come in here complaining about no root or not being able to unlock their phone yet, but it is being worked on and in fact the devs doing it have unlocked carrier phones (from what i have seen), they are just working on a way to make it easy for the general public to do it and to make sure there is a way back or at least a way to not brick your phone. plus LG is on here too so there isnt much chatter here so that LG doesnt patch what they are working on before they can even get it out to us
it will come i am sure of it
Me too, i find this to be this first device i could use without root, i would still rather have it than not, but i could own this phone long term without it. Glad to see a positive note and people having the same experience i am with the phone. I also was a former S6 owner, my wife has it now so i can really check them out side by side and its no contest, and thats with my wife on a custom rom.
I was thinking how far phones have come since I got my first Android phone back in 2012 (Mytouch 4G Slide) Some great ROMS on that old thing. I moved on up to a Nexus 4 from that. The so called professional review sites claim that the differences between the S6 and G4 cameras are so small that it's hard to pick a clear cut winner, but I tell you, the only flaw in the G4's camera is the over sharpening. The S6's camera software kinda sucks, the viewfinder looks grainy and the pictures aren't any better. The ram issue sealed it for me, the darn thing has 3gb of ram available, how does T/W use that much?
Wow, so sad to see no progress on root and twrp. I bought this device thinking I was getting the "full" flagship experience.

define full flagship experience?
[soapbox]
and just because no one is posting about it doesnt mean no one is working on it. give it time, dang, the phones only been out for 2 and a half months. thats the problem with xda these days, we are so hellbent on having root and being unlocked so we can void our warranty and flash firmware to our expensive devices for what? so we can say "hey look i unlocked my phone and flashed CM on it, take that LG, now my phone is not near as good as it was when i bought it"

Love the phone but the jank is really starting to get to me. Picked up my N5 today and was shocked at how much smoother it was than my G4
Hi all, jumped the Sammy ship after some 3.5 years using Galaxy devices (latest was a S4). It's actually the first time I get a flagship almost when it's been released, and so far this phone seems like a great device. I'm not looking for custom ROMs yet, root would be nice, but as it stands it's an awesome Android flagship.

Because the N5 use stock android, the biggest advantage of the G4 is much longer battery life. For me it's matter because the battery on Nexus is non-swapable and battery life is not good.

Left the note 4 because of the crap camera taking forever to focus and the gps that never could find a signal. At first i thought i made a mistake because of the lag i was getting before updating to the new N update and i am not looking back. The g4, at its 479 price point is a monster

LG G2 Thoughts in 2015/2016

With 2016 approaching do you have any intentions to upgrade to the LG G5 or otherwise? What's keeping you from upgrading or pushing you towards upgrading?
I only need Band 2 LTE to use my new T-Mobile line with. What about you guys?

I would probably switch to G5 if it comes with a 4k display and if it looks something like this the concept shown on techradar.
I'm pretty happy still though haven't had phone long. Would like an update to 5.1.1 then see what comes along. Lots of good phones out there now at good prices. But this is still one of them.
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk
I wouldn't. The battery life of this one its incredible and the new ones dont offer anything that can be real % improvement.
Only if LG creates something like the S6 active (with incredible battery, water resistant, rugged, etc) that would be the only reason to change it. Otherwise, there's something that the G2 can't handle?
If the GPS was perfect, then I would never upgrade. This phone can still do everything and it's perfect size and screen to body ratio.
I feel like the camera could be better. So I am upgrading the note 5 or moto x pure. Going to try another rom first though.
GPS is my number 1 issue, mine doesn't work at all. I will hopefully upgrade when the new Nexus 5 comes out (Verizon better have it...)
This phone has aged really well though, still as fast as when I got it (my galaxy nexus not so much) and there's really been no significant improvements for phones since it came out.
I'm not interested in a phone that I can't update myself and there just really hasn't been anything that I am interested in upgrading to that's out currently.
The stock rom on this phone is god awful ugly though, got rid of it immediately with CM.
The battery life is why I haven't moved on to a G3,G4 or a Samsung. My GPS works fine, when I need it. I'm only rooted and using the LG stock rom 39a.
My only real wish is a better camera, though the video part comes out fine

the jury is out
My wife has had hers for over a year, my screen broke. I just bought her a nexus 6 for christmas, she bought me a note 4. The jury is still out for her lol I think she likes the G2 better. The note 4 she got me is verizon so Im not very impressed. Ive had the Tmobile note 4 and that was a GREAT phone. The VZW version just isnt development friendly. Sucks because I love the note 4.

I already pre-ordered mine. Main reason is I don't think I can stand the S6 lag anymore. Latest OTA "fixed" it but not completely. Samsung, you were so close to making the perfect phone. So close....
I'm seriously considering getting one too, I'm tired of the ****ty battery life, will try getting an exchange from T-mobile and if the new S6 (probably refurb) still has battery issues I'll get a 5X. My main concern is that I have a 64gb S6.
Battery life will be better but not great and that's coming from the lead designer of the new nexus phones. I still enjoy my s6 even though it's stock. Maybe next year I'll switch to a nexus phone

The Snapdragon 810 in the Nexus 6p SOC is not a good alternative. Slower, hotter and I guess therefor eating up more battery.
Camera wise, LG G4 and S6 are still king imo. (here are some shots - best case scenario-: http://www.theverge.com/2015/9/29/9417599/nexus-5x-6p-camera-photos-images)
While I would love to buy another nexus, I have to pass this one and wait for next year, as it is way too expensive imo.
Be warned! No band 12 support (at least initially) with the new nexus phones. T-mobile won't let unlocked phones use band 12 unless they become VoLTE certified.

A couple things I'm hopeful for. 1, the 810 is ver 2.1 so it should fix those issues. 2, the camera has been rated and did extremely well. http://www.androidauthority.com/nexus-6p-second-best-mobile-camera-645771/
Back to the Snapdragon 810 vs our phones. I'm so disappointed with what Samsung has done to this fantastic hardware with their crappy software. My phone lags, stutters. My old HTC M8 is lightning fast compared. So specs are great and all...(dont misinterpret my frustration, its solely towards Samsung)
Just wish we could get a vanilla based rom for the s6. :/ lol

I've been trying to figure this out... I chatted with T-Mobile but still don't really have a clear answer. I currently run on Band 4 on my Nexus 6 (which I love BTW) and my S6. Where I'm at, Columbus, Ohio, there is not support for Band 12. If/when Band 12 is activated here, will I then lose the ability to access LTE via Band 4? Or would Band 12 just simply be added in addition to Band 4?
This is the only reason I am debating on canceling my pre-order for the Nexus 6P... For those wanting a direct comparison of an N6 vs S6... I'll keep it short and sweet, the N6 blows away the S6 in every aspect except camera and fingerprint reader... The fact that the 6P has a significantly improved camera, and a fingerprint reader, it was a no brainer for me. The N6 has SOOO much support on XDA, endless options, constantly getting updates, doesn't have the super annoying poor ram management of the Galaxy lineup, I could go on and on. I'm still going to hold onto my S6 and sell my N6 and OPO for the 6P. I think once Chase is added to Samsung Pay that may drive me back to the S6... but as I flip back and forth between my N6 and S6, I find myself constantly going back to the N6 for longer periods of time.
I'd have a 6 already if not for the size. I can't wait to actually sacrifice this 6S to a hammer and get something else. The holy grail would be the Sony Z5, but it's unlikely to make it here. I'm very disappointed the 6P/5X don't have wireless charging though. Push comes to shove though, the 5X might be the way to go.

It would be added in addition to band 4. The only issue I have is in my house band 12 is always a stronger signal but it doesn't have the fastest bandwith. So I might get a faster download speed with band 4 even though it has a week er signal. I can manually change to band 4 with my s6 by using the code *#2263#

Have you tried using the Play Store to browse anything whatsoever? Holy s**t is it laggy and jittery. I'm on the latest version, and it's still a jittery mess. Also selecting a text from the notification shade takes 5-10 seconds to open Hangouts. Those are the two big ones for me. That and the constantly restarting apps even when they've been hanging out in RAM draining battery. WTF? One example: Chrome can hangout running in the background draining my battery like a champ, but if I switch back to it, it reloads...every...single...tab. Grrrr!

My cousin got it and I was able to check it out in person. I wouldn't mind switching my S8 for an Active. Seeing it and using it made me start thinking about it. Hope to hear about everyone's experiences with the phone!
I have one and love it
Got it first week of December. GREAT phone. Battery life is incredible (coming from S6 Edge) and screen is amazing. No root, and I always root my phones, but I haven't had many issues or circumstances where I miss root.

I am not sure I understand what you are saying please elaborate. Are you asking a question? or making a statement?

should i buy?

hey i am currently on the market for a new phone, i currently have the google pixel xl and i love it, ive heard bad things about the 2xl though with all the problems it has and i dont like the fact that the s9+ is unrootable in america and the international version doesnt work on my carrier sprint because they only support cdma bands and the international version only supports the GSM bands and ive heard the OP6 is terrible from a lot of people so that really just leaves the note 8 but it doesnt seem like theres much as far as development goes for it

U.S. snapdragons are also bootloader locked, like the S9s. The international versions are not, and have lots of development in the roms section. Not sure they would work with Sprint either though.

it makes me wonder though, if i can buy an unlocked phone then why are the bands different? shouldnt an unlocked phone be able to go to any carrier with both gsm and cdma?

I know what you mean, but I guess there are just different phones for different markets. If they are sim unlocked then all it means is that it is not locked to a particular carrier. It doesn't automatically guarantee that it will work with every carrier around the globe, or work in the exact same way. I believe the U.S. Snapdragons have CDMA (unlike Exynos), but I've never used Sprint so can't say for certain how that works. I can't see the Note 8 being different from the S9 in that regard.

yeah i just looked up their processors and it looks like snapdragon supports gsm and cdma but exynos doesnt support cdma atleast for the s9+ so im still stuck lol it looks like the note 8 you can root on the sprint version but i didnt see too much development for it is snapdragon just unrootable or do you think theyll find a way to root it? i really like the features and things of the s9+ but theres just such an untapped reservoir of potential with not rooting it

I have an Exynos so I may be mistaken here, but to my knowledge the U.S. snapdragons were able to be rooted on Nougat (even with their locked bootloaders), but it's not possible at the moment on Oreo. That could change, but I don't know how likely (or unlikely) that is. Check out the SamFail thread for more info on root for Snapdragon.

the s9+ can be rooted? ill check it out
I am starting to consider the Note 8 as well. I had a Note 3, loved it, had an S7 Edge for a couple years but recently sold that and picked up a Pixel 2 XL. In my case the 2 XL is a great phone, it's fast, stock android is great, but it continually drops the Bluetooth connection to my Gear S3 frontier which is maddening. The S7 Edge was rock solid and never once dropped the connection to the watch, the 2 XL has dropped the connection at least half a dozen times today alone.
$200 off currently on an unlocked Note 8 has me seriously considering returning the 2 XL as I am still within the 30 day return period.

I don't know about the s9, I was speaking about the note 8.
The most important reason to buy a note series device should be the s pen, in your case, I believe that the spen is not the main reason, so, I would sugest to you to get another device

I've actually just today considering trading my Unlocked Note 8 for the Google Pixel XL 2 but it didn't go through as planned. I'm really interested in the great camera on the XL 2 and I'd like to try the stock Android experience. Do you only have Bluetooth issues on the gear s3? I have the Fitbit Ionic and use Bluetooth in my truck so if there's a serious Bluetooth issue I'm not so sure anymore. I had the same Bluetooth issues on the LG V20 which is why I got the Note 8.

Honestly, as much as I love the Pixel 2 XL, the camera is great and stock Android is exactly what I had hoped (no junk apps, nothing I can't remove if I don't want it etc.) the Bluetooth issues are seriously frustrating. What is doubly annoying is that on Monday for example, it disconnected from my Gear S3 at least half a dozen times, but yesterday did not disconnect a single time. If you take a look though, BT connectivity issues definitely plague the 2XL, take a look at this thread for example, started in October last year: https://productforums.google.com/fo...!msg/phone-by-google/-lpPfDGvkNw/hzLdYStbAgAJ As you can see, it is still ongoing and covers all sorts of devices.
I am kind of stuck really, part of me wants to return the phone because I use the Gear S3 far more than I ever expected, taking calls on it is handy if I am in the garage for example and don't have my phone on me, my work calendar syncs to it which is great for quickly checking in the morning on my meetings etc. But, on the flip side the phone is so fast and smooth, that I really enjoy using it.
Overall how do you like the Note 8? I loved my Note 3, one of my favorite phones to date.

Thank you for your honesty. I did further research and I found many saying my $300 Fitbit Ionic watch isn't compatible with the Pixel 2 XL, so I'm glad I didn't trade my device yet. The only device I wouldn't mind trading for is the S9+ because I know there won't be any issues with compatibility.

No problem, I wish I had known about the Bluetooth issue before getting my 2XL. I had heard there were some issues but was not expecting it to be quite so extensive. Annoyingly, I may be stuck with the phone as I am a few days outside the 15-day return window, which will leave me just hoping for a fix.
