For example today it took over three hours to charge from 57% to 100%.Phone was being charged whilst turned off.
Noticed the other day when recharging both the recharger & the back of the Note got pretty warm whilst recharging & phone turned off.
Could this be caused by an app, say something like anti-virus, I run Avast?
Sorry to bump this but it's still an ongoing issue.
Also bump, I have this problem as well. I haven't damaged/dropped the phone or exposed to water. I have tried both mine and my wife's official samsung faster chargers and my anker multiport fast charger. They all charge slowly. Any information would be helpful.

hi ,
i would suggest you try and pinpoint cause of issues eg , to phone ,usb cable ,charger etc .?
Then decide what action to take .?
I would suggest you start by to check charging ,discharging etc. of your devices ?
i am currently using these two apps to check my cables/charger charging ...
Ampere and Galaxy Charging Current ..............................(Plus, there are plenty other similar apps /options Just check for free versions , as i have the paid ones )
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gombosdev.ampere&hl=en
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.abmantis.galaxychargingcurrent
To give you an example why i suggest this ,
is that just yesterday i checked , all my usb /chargers .
I found that the one usb cable ,one family member was using .
He was complaining about slow /forever charging ,
The usb cable was only charging at 300mA average
I changed it with another cable ,that was charging 1200mA ...+ ( average )
i also made sure (in past) changing usb cables and chargers around and check current .
If this does not work ,surely it points towards your device and not an accessory of device ?
Only option then is to take to service center ?
Just remember ,
you don't have to "damage" your accessories /device ?
to experience issues, like i described above in my post .
good luck
post note
Nearly forgot .
Remember there a diffs between cable charging and fast charging.
Firstly ,fast charging has to be enabled, in your Device/ Smart manager ,Battery ,at bottom Fast cable charging.
Secondly ,
If your device is fast charging or cable charging,
it will tell you this in your drop down
Notifications list eg . fast charging /cable charging .
I have found that a lot of Usb cables /chargers "don't " fast charge. !!
One moment it might say in Notification "fast charging " then a few days later that same cable/charger , will suddenly stop fast charging .!!
I also don't recommend ,always fast charging .
I am sure it will eventually damage/shorten , your lifespan of battery .

Willcor summed it up nicely. It's also worth mentioning that in the past I have had similar experiences, albeit as a result of firmware (stock) that I flashed via Odin. On some it would take forever to charge to I flashed something else etc. If you've had any updates recently then it may be related, but it also could be your cables. I remember reading somewhere that people had faulty fast chargers (or ones that would develop faults overtime) as well as some of samsungs cables (which are also known for bad "batches").

Hi, I would like to ask if there is anyone of you happen to be via a docking station charge the phone for a long time ? Yesterday I played Real Racing 3 which understandably draining battery as hell , so I put the phone in the dock station and keep playing RR3 but battery had been keep drained so I turned off the game and tried simply just looking over the net with the phone still embedded in the dock but situation has been the same percentages keep going down . So I turned off the display and let it charge if it stabilizes . I've found that one percent will be charged in 5 minutes which means over eight hours to full charge . I've tried to force kill Smart Connect (I've read that might be solution for this unusual draining) but nothing hapens...even about 2 times that process Smart Connect itself again launched and let notification popped. Otherwise I've tried to kill all applications to sure that no application is taking battery time. My charging set is :
1x Dock M36H
1x USB charger original manufacturer
1 MicroUSB cable length 2m (buying longer because of log distance of the socket)
My observation is that it could cause just that long cable because when I charge the phone with shorter on one side connected to the dock and on the other side to the PC and it worked flawlessly , and the phone has been around for 3h charged . Do you have some experience with it ? Or cable length does not affect the charge? Thank you for your insights
not only the length, the built quality is important too (armoring and connectors). the more tick it will be the better results you'll have (transfer speed and charging efficiency). for the dock I advise a cable of 1 meter only if it's cheap.
Made in ZR
To further test and see if your extension cable is faulty:
connect the extension cable directly to the phone itself, not the dock and see how fast it charges compare to the stock. You can also download the app called better battery status as it shows the actual charging current. by comparing using just stock cable vs added extension, it should give you a better idea.
For some reason (since lollipop cm12 nightly 20150121, currently on DStrikerz 4.7 stock-based ROM) my phone takes a while to recognised that the charger is plugged in ( an average of 1-2, sometimes not at all, sometimes longer and/or sometimes it randomly stop charging in the middle of charging).
This is what I have done:
I have done a clean flash by going to CM11 (not CM12) back to Dstriker ROM thinking some residual code may have stayed from Lollipop CM12 (cause it had slow charging issues, reported by many), but issue still persists.
I have tried different Power Bricks. I get 700-850mA from iPad charger with 2.4A (2400mA) output with stock cable. I get 200-300mA on a brick with 400mA output.
I have yet to fully verify this but I have had no problems with the other bricks (still need time)
(End of What I have done)
Now my question is that:
Is the lower mA normal when charging?
Do I have issues with my charging port (had charging port issues on previous phone which is Sammy GS2) or is it the brick and/or cable?
How long does it take for your phone battery percentage to go up 1% on average (mine is 1.5 - 5min average) ?
Any other software solutions you can suggest? (Optional)
Can you post a screenshot of the mA of your battery while charging so I can compare? (Optional)
Look at the screenshot at the bottom.

My phone has stock rom, and i used to have the problem of phone immediately not starting to charge...
I found out that the stock cable was loose when connecting, so i started using the cable of my older xperia u, which works fine
Have you tried turning off the phone and then charging?
Because sometimes the kernel gets moody and all that, i had these problems on my xperia u, and i then used to power off and then leave it on charging for some time

That's for the reply I just found the problem. It was the plug. My friend connected it to his GS3 for 1 hour and it only charged 3%. I've tried other charging plugs with stock cable as well for the past night and didn't have any problem. So I might have to replace or fix the plug myself.
test again try to start charge when the battery is at 20% and see if it still 300-400 mah so u may have to get a new cable or to get new charger also maybe the plug
the charging from 90 to 100 is usualy slow comparing from start to 90
test and tell

Interesting. I pushed the USB connection on the plug upwards (seen attachment) and it started charging properly at 700-900mA until 90% where it was 300-400mA, compared to the 300-500mA no matter what battery % I had left.
Charging was much quicker.
I remember doing the same on the GS2 charging port and phone charged properly.
I guess its something to do with no reenforcement at the top of the port. Both S2 micro USB port and Z1 USB charger plug port have no reenforcement at top. Think this is a design flaw.

Maybe, but my mobile also get fully charge in about 2 hrs max, and when i once checked this app about current, it was showing around 400-500mA at about 48%, although the mobile didnt take time to charge, maybe at that instance the current was that?
I noticed that my note 5 is not fast charging while the screen is on
After doing some searches I realized that it's an option included by Samsung software
Is there any way to disable it and always have fast charging even while using the phone ?
That would be great

hi ,
i just want to point out ,that i am not to sure where you read above claim....?
re not fast charging while screen is on ..??
I have Note5 ( 920C ) not rooted ,stock Rom .
Fast charging shows up ..all the time with screen on !
( see screenshot .)
......how would i have taken screenshot without screen on ?
I had a issue about an month back that my phone did not fast charge and i swopped Usb cables ( took an spare old Note 4 cable ) and it worked again !
To me it points to some "error" ??
Not showing up !!
good luck

Yes it will still show Fast charging but the incoming current will be limited to somehow around 1000 mah (check it using Ampere or galaxy charging current)
I read it on official samsung website ( Check the screenshot )
There is no option to turn fast charging on or off. That option was only found on the Note 4.

hi,
interesting, what Samsung claims.
What I found in real life usage is, if i have fast charging enabled (showing in notification) and my data /wifi is on and i keep on using my device , it still " fast" charges (ok, with how much mah, i dont know) to 100% in the +- time as stated in notification.
If i use my original Note5 usb cable with fast charging adapter it states
that it is now "cable charging" and actually slowly loses battery %. while i am using the phone.
My current setup is.....
i am using my old long Usb Note 4 cable with Note5 fast charging adapter.
Further, yes it is logic that if device is in sleep mode, it will charge faster...! but while I'm using it with fast charging "enabled /activated " (my opinion) it's also fast charging.!
The only difference is in the mah..? but charging faster than cable charging..... yes.!
Bottom line...
my logic says it's not good to always fast charge, as it can have a negative impact on battery in long run.
I alternate between fast and cable charging.
Anyway, for each their own way!
good luck
The max screen ON charging limit of 1400 mAh is set by the kernel. You can find this in source. This is not opinion, but fact.
I have battery charging controls (by AndreiLux) implemented in my SkyHigh kernel to control screen OFF rates.
Yesterday I've received my Tab S2 8.0". After the first charge I connected the tablet to my computer to upload some files and I get a red "X" on the battery and the message: "Slow charger connected"
In the notification area I get a constant red "Device charging slowly. To charge faster, use the original charger".
Is this normal? Cause I'm using the USB cable that came with the device and tried with USB3.0 and USB2.0 with the same results.
Oh, extra info! The tablet was bought in France, I'm from Argentina.

Yes it's normal.
USB ports cannot put out as much current as a decent charger (like the one the tablet came with). Hence it charges more slowly using USB (or indeed some inferior or lower powered plug-in chargers), and it's warning you that it is doing so. I think the maximum a USB2 port can provide is about 500mA, with USB3 about 900mA or so.
Compare that to the proper plug-in charger, which is 2A (if I remember correctly).
Some motherboards etc do have higher current USB ports for charging etc, but that's non-standard and they are usually specially labelled as such.
Oh, thanks for the help. I got a little scare with the warning.
I got the same tablet, and also noticed this warning about battery charing slowly, and asking me to use original charger.
It's working resonably ok with original charger, though it charges slow with other chargers with the same AMP rating. E.g. it charges slowly with the larger iPad charger, which is also 2 AMP rated ...
Charing with iPad charger is so slow, that when I use the device with during charging, it drains faster than it charges! Quick unusual ...
Anyone? Any comments?
Theres an excellent app called Ampere which gives you info on the tablets charging and power consumption - useful and interesting.
Cant post links yet so just search for it on Play
Also don't forget that (when not built-into the charger) the cable is also important to the amount of current reaching the tablet.
The best charger in the world may well struggle if a long cable with hair-thin high resistance wiring is used to transfer the power into the tablet.
Lastly even though many chargers are labelled as 5v 2A, they may not actually be able to provide that under load, and if things drop when a hungry device like a tablet is connected then things will slow up.
I have a few 5v 2A chargers which come up as slow charging, whereas others which were more purposefully designed (e.g. the 5v 2A charger from my old Nexus 7) work just as well as the supplied Samsung one.

this is such onfortunate ongoing issue
i got my Tab S2 - SM-T715Y in Thailand as i am backpacking Asia ..
I know the warranty is per country .. so I can not use it where I am now - in Vietnam .. or back home in USA
I realized that this was a major factor before buying .. so I can go through my credit cards extended warranty ..
in the future I will buy Acer or Asus or alike that have international warranty ..
yesterday I was on a road trip
and I was using my 12V car charger
and then a battery bank .. and I think it rigered this problem or fact that I drained my S2 to 0%
fact is that now it is showing "slow charger connected" .. I am using the original charger and cable
now it is slowly *discharging* when connected to AC!!
also will try to whipe the cache..
this is so terrible
I am losing faith in Samsung :/ (had charging issues with my Note 3 .. 8 months in .. motherboard issue)
I can not find a solution to this problem
I am thinking of putting it in a refrigirator? maybe it will do something to the battery?
So my note 9 (snapdragon) is never using fast charging and even if i manage to get it to give me fast charging it gives 1 hour 39 minutes to charge and takes 3 hours, when i charge by cable charging with disabling the fast charging setting it charges in 2 hours 10 minutes while it is cable charging not giving me fast, with the setting enabled it charges in 1 hour 59 minutes.
One side of the type-c never gives fast charging and the other side writes fast charging for 4-5 seconds then switch to cable charging and rarely doesn't switch but the charging time is 3 hours as i mentioned.
I tried everything possible other than trying to flash another software it is with the stock but unlocked.
I cleaned the socket, used 10 different chargers with different cables, wiped cache and tried safe mode and more.
Sorry for making it a long post but this problem is driving me crazy and i want to know can it be software issue not hardware because the phone is used for 2 months and the socket can't be cleaner, and if i flash the stock rom again will it be locked by T-mobile and i would need to unlock it again?
Thanks alot.
First of all, try to change the cable that 98% of the time is the problem when having these types of issues . Then consider the fact that the battery's temp influences the time needed for charging so if it's hot, software will decrease power in charging so that will give a longer time to charge. Even using the phone while charging or leaving apps in background will extend time for charging.
I have posted this so many times.
Samsung uses cheap USBc connectors that short out. Once you lose FC the only way to get it back is so get a new USBc installed by Samsung or a third party. This happened to me about 4 months after I got phone. I never fixed but I will never buy Sammy again. Its not your cables, its not the power cube, its the connector on the actual phone.

In every case, better Sammy's phone USB c connector then iPhones phone lightning connector because after a year you can't even charge the phone at all for having intermittent false contacts when you plug in the cable for the phones connector going bad....

It's possible the the USB C connection is faulty, it's also possible it's a faulty charger cable or even a faulty charger .
Eliminate one by one, buy a good USB C cable to check if that cures the problem, it often does.
Whilst as Tokedup says it may be the usb socket in the phone as according to his post he didn't fix the problem it's not possible to conclusively determine the cause.
It's unlikely to be caused by software, but high ambient or high battery temperature will lead to charge rate reduction
Maybe try an app like accubattery, this will show the charge rate in mA.
With a genuine charger and cable fast charge will reach a maximum of 2800mA

The problem is the phone isn't fast charging at all.
I believe it's the phone socket actually.
Thanks anyways

I already tried alot of cables and chargers so i am sure it's not one of them and now i am nearly certain it's the socket since you said it's unlikely to be a software issue, but i really wanted to know what could've caused it because i am sure i didn't do anything wrong.
I have been monitoring accubattery for a month now everytime i charge the phone. The mA is always between 800-1200mA and the phone takes nearly 2 hours to charge.
Thanks alot mate
just to be sure that it is not software related, remove all the battery optimization related 3rd party apps. clear cache and test the phone with stock usb cable and charger that came with the phone. what i had experience is that my note 9 SM-960F is sencitive to charger. if i use a third party fast charger or cable, it give me some sort of trouble like overheating or slow charging. so make sure you are using stock charger and cable that came with phone.

Why not get a Samsung wireless quick-charger and try it?
A wireless charger will not be faster than cable charge but I would get one so you don't wear out that port to where it doesn't interface with a computer if needed in the future. Btw all my new phones thats the first thing I turn off is fast charging it degrades battery more over time.

When I purchased my note 9 I did a post somewhere where I said the weakest link in this phone is the Charging port. And so right from the first week I got a wireless charging pad.
Also during the rainy season I keeps saying there is moisture in the port. Basiclly god help you if you live in a place with high humidity.
Like you this is the last Samsung Note I will buy in this life. My Audio packed up after the update. I suspect the over heating caused this. And their support is outsourced in India so they don't give a hoot about your issues.
To the OP.
Try a wireless charger if that fast charges Then you know its a port issue. If that also does not fast charge then its a chip / board issue.
I predict all note 9 users are going to see more and more problems as the over heating causes components to start to fail.
You can get a new USB port with flex cable for like 4$ on ali express go for it.
