Hi all !
Just bought the OnePlus 3 ! Rly gud.
But now i'm searching a car base ! Any of you have found a good one?
Is magnetic car mount safe ? (Both mechanical support and for the internal electronic of the phone.)
Thank you !
(sorry for my bad english...)
I am using a brodit car holder. Very variable but expensive. But you get a very stable holder that can be removed without damaging the car.
I am using the Version for the Oneplus One with my Oneplus 3 Mobile inkl. the wooden case.

Wow this looks good =) i will take a look
I've been using this Mountek magnetic holder over several devices, HTC M8, M10, Nexus 6P and now this 3.
To avoid sticking the metal plate on the outside of the device I put it inside.

magnetic car mounts are my favorite hands down.
vent vs CD vs windshield mount depends on your preference / vent configuration / sun

Hi
I did the same for my OnePlus One... Now switched to the Three and was wondering if this would be possible for the Three as well..
Did you already open your phone and was there sufficient room to add a metal plate?
In my One I had the smallest of the two plates.. (. 25mm), if you have opened yours I guess you have used this one as well?
I have been using the magnetic mount in my car with my previous phone NEXUS 5. I never needed to use any metal plate on the phone before of it's built-in magnets inside the back of Nexus 5 which was used for wireless charging.
So it was a perfect match.
Now due to heavier weight of the phone,,, I plan on purchasing a slightly larger version of magnet mount.
But please do not that, magnets will not damage your phone but it may mess around with the built in sensors inside the phone which may rely on tiny magnets in the phone.
I remember reading somewhere that, that is the reason why Apple do not recommend using magnetic type of mounts with iPhone. or some thing like that...
But again... I really haven't had much issues with my previous phone Nexus 5 and even GPS navigation worked fine. But I did have issue where GPS directions were messed up somewhat. But worked pretty much all of other times, so I don't know whats up with that.
Hi, can you please let me know which Brodit model you got? Can't seem to find one with a cradle that has a suction cup to use in cars. Thanks.
ProClipUSA.com sells mounts specific to your car. You can then purchase a universal phone holder to attach to the mount. They sell everything you need. Might be a bit pricey, however their mounts look very professional. They take 2 minutes to install.

You probably don't want the charging option anyway due to not being Dash. Try to locate the universal holder. That way you can adjust a few screws and place any phone in it. Which mount you get is up to you .

In my OnePlus I have added a metal plate (non magnetic). I cannot imagine this changing anything to the phone or it's sensors. Only when "hanging" on the car mount there is some magnetism involved.
Did anyone have the guts yet to open his OP3 and add a little metal plate ?

Yes there is enough room for the plate. I had to cut the plate for another phone so it's now 4cm which went in without any issues. Someone said it might effect NFC but since I never use this feature it doesn't bother me.

Anybody know if there is a car mount available that is either specific to the Holiday, or one that is universal but works just as well? I want to try iOnRoad:
Not that I need it, because I'm a good driver.. lol just curious as to how well it works. Plus, I use navigation on occasion and it would be nice to have a real mount rather than propping the phone up on the dash or holding it.
Here you are.
Awesome. But, you know, I can't really Google any car mounts Vivid users have already tried out and experienced for themselves. Because even though I have, I haven't found any. So that's really why I asked. Nice try, though.

next time, maybe you should check the google links before trying to be funny... you know... the ones that don't actually have mounts for the vivid...
thanks.
While they don't have one for the Vivid/Raider yet, I've always used ProClip mounts (Brodit outside of North America). They come in two pieces, one custom fit to the vehicle and one custom fit to the phone, and I like it very much. I've emailed them to see if they'll make a Vivid mount, but they gave the standard "We don't know what our plans are" answer. If people are interested, email them, maybe if they get enough questions, they'll actually make one!
The ProClips are ok. I've used them before. However, I've really grown to like the Scosche universal that you can find at Walmart. It uses two small bottom feet and has sticky gel on the back to hold the phone.
It comes with a windshield mount. When the gel loses its stick, just clean it with a damp rag. Mine has lasted through three cellphones and going.
Kensigton Universal Car Mount
I just bought this a few weeks ago and it work excellent with the Vivid, it holds the phone securely and has very minimalist design. To remove the phone from the holder is just a press of a button. I used the vent clip mounting option, as I prefer not to obstruct the windshield with anything. Below is the link to the product page on Amazon, which is where I bought it from.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003SE6LD0
I picked up a thunderbolt dock last night at Verizon (only $10) cut off the left side (farthest from plug) and it fits and world really well, im ganna add some foam to the back so it fits in better and more securely.
I am actually using a Kensington iPhone car mount (can't post a link yet) granted my Vivid isn't in a case but its only about $10 on Amazon and it holds the phone snugly while given access to the charging port and can rotate from lanscape to portrait easily.
The only issue I have is that the mic on this phone is so weak that I can't be heard on the phone if I answer on speakerphone while driving. Does anyone know a fix for this?

Anyone know if htc makes different cradles for their car docks? I recently looked at an htc car mount/ dock for an evo 3d and it looks like an amazing mount with superior quality. I found a way to take off the evo 3d specific "cradle" and was wondering why they designed it that way if I couldn't find any other cradles online. It would totally make sense if I could go to a parts website and just buy the cheap cradle part. The mount is clearance at Best Buy so this would be the best inexpensive option I think.

Ive actually been in the market for a vent mount myself. I dont like window mounts mainly because they put your phone where it's sitting right in the sun the entire time its in the mount. Vent mounts help some to keep it out of the sun. I haven't bought one yet, but I plan to in the near future. However, before I do, I think I'm going to try this first. Found it in another thread, thought I'd share it here too.
http://lifehacker.com/5747897/how-to-build-a-car-mount-for-your-cellphone-from-office-supplies
My personal favorite is still the Mountek.
My first mount for my Inspire was a mountek. It worked great for what it is. I read somewhere that:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0052G6IRG/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
can be modified to fit the phone. Mine is due to arrive tomorrow and found this thread looking for the other thread lol. IIRC you have to modify (or cut off for the less handy) the portion of the mount that curves around the top of the phone (mic jack area). No worried as the USB port with firm top/bottom clamping should hold the phone from lateral movement in landscape modes. I definately would not try to have it hold the phone upside down when modified.
Try a type similar to the Rocketfish Universal mount...
Hi guys,
Just recently got the Vivid. Best Buy sells the Rocketfish Universal mount for about $25 or so. I'm sure there's something similar out on the web...I like this mount because I can move the arms/feet around the buttons and still secure the phone in mount. Useful if you have a GPS (like google navigate doesn't do a fair job) or another phone that you swap in and out with...
Would love to find a mount suitable for a '95 Honda VT1100 (though with some velcro strapping the Rocketfish would work. Any suggestions there?

Try installing "Equalizer", from the AppBrain market. It really will boost the sound quality both ways, and it's customizable.

Does yours allow the phone to actually charge properly? Mine it just slowly drains, figured I would see what your results were before dropping even more money on yet another cig lighter to usb port. My current one is spec'd to 500mA so if its functioning its provides the juice.
EDIT: Tested in car mode attached directly to the charger and it still slowly drained. must not be the dock then :/

Hello, I don't know if you noticed, but recently a new 128 GB sdxc card from lexar was released... this is kind of great for storage freaks like me, who just can't get enough of it...
Unfortunately, this is a standard sized SD card, not µSD...
But re-joy , there is an adapter that exists, available on some chinese gadget site (~ 5 $)
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/sd-to-microsd-transflash-card-converter-module-27001
, that allow us to use such card on our phones, with very little hack...
To use this adapter, you'll need to drill through the plastic cover, so I'd guess that it will void the warranty,
consider yourself warned ! (thus you can already find extra back plate on ebay, for around 20 $)
To make this mod, you need the adapter (SKU #27001), a dremel (or a good knife or cutter, whatever, the back plate is in soft plastic, very easy to drill and cut !) and something to stick the adapter on the backplate (maybe a simple piece of good black tape will be more aesthetic, but thermal glue is so funny )
You also need to format your SDcard in fat32 filesystem, so it is compatible with android... I haven't tried the xfat filesystem that was on it at the beginning, because Linux doesn't handle it, so to put music on it I had to change it to fat32.
The total thickness is 13mm
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
This is how I did it on my Note. I love thermal glue because it's quick, removable, bendable, and makes the device a bit less slippery when hold with one hand, but it is, I must admit, quite very ugly !
I made a hole for the whole adapter in the back cover, to gain a little bit more in thickness, as well as I did remove one of the plastic sheet that was on the back of the card adapter.
At the end, it is still protruding from the back, but no more than the thickness of an otterbox protection. So if you use one of those, you just have to cut them too, and the adapter won't bulge anymore !
If you want it really slim, there's another way, but I haven't done it yet, because it consist of soldering directly the ribbon cable to the sd card, with it's plastic shell, or even more slim, by stripping the sdcard to the bare minimum : the printed board with the chips only (the card become more fragile like that, so be careful !
Knowing that the card cost around 200 $, I'm not willing to do that right now.
Moreover, the card is directly accessible, so you can now unmount your sdcard from the phone, and take it from it without shutting the device down.
This is quite convenient to transfer movies, music or pictures like this !
So if you have any idea of how to make it a bit more good looking, please share !
EDIT : I just updated my phone (a note 2 of course...) and updated also the mod, which now fits perfectly under the cover, without drilling it !

Kudos to nothing. This Frankenstein of a phone is gross. This is penny wise and dollar foolish. We should start a new forum called "dumb stuff" for this.

the converter cable looks pretty thin and flimsy. the whole thing wouldn't fit under the battery cover at all without cutting through the back cover? the battery cover is quite soft and should be able to flex a little to accomodate, no?

in the threadstarter's defence, I think he/she recognises the ridiculousness of his solution: "(maybe a simple piece of good black tape will be more aesthetic, but thermal glue is so funny )" I see the humour in this
seriously.. why is there still casing on the sd card? would it not be thinner if u removed the case.. hell it might even fit under the phone case
1) Pair it with extended battery cover (probably Mugen's in the future), the SD card should be able to be hidden inside the battery cover.
2) Format the card as ext2 (or 3,4 whatever) mount it as /sdcard (should be possible but haven't tried yet)

I was thinking of just buying the OEM case and modding it to have smart functionality myself.
My idea was to buy some magnetic sheeting such as that found here and stick it to the inside of the front cover. Hopefully that would be enough to both keep the cover from flapping about, and also activate the magnetic sensor.
Has anyone experimented with this? Got any tips or suggestions?
PS. If anyone lives in Melbourne, Australia and can let me know where I can find a grey OEM case I'd be extremely appreciative.
I thought the official case had the magnet for the smart on/off already?

Not to my knowledge. Although I'm baffled as to why it doesn't.
The trick would be to get a magnet which is not too strong or too weak. I modded a Kindle fire case with a small rare earth magnet which worked fine but also switched the N7 off when folding the cover to the back. I don't think any magnet is going to keep the front flap closed though, there's nothing for the magnet to cling to on the N7.
Hmmm. That's interesting. I just assumed that there would be enough metal in the device to hold on to. I guess the iPad has a metal back, so the smart cover would be attracted to that. I'm searching around for a case, and if/when I get a chance to try the I'll report back here.

What sort of magnets did you use?
As for my favourite phone, the 3315 is just a classic. I'll never forget the time I gave my new 3315 to a random guy I found on the internet so that he could swap out the green LEDs for blue ones. I was 14.

I modified my N7 case into a smart cover. Took quite a bit of experimentation and had to chop one of my magnets into quarters but eventually I got it working reliably without issues when the cover was closed or opened and folded back. To make the magnet flush inside of the case I melted a dent into the inside flap right where the sensor is located, which worked well.
The one additional thing did to make it completely reliable was stuck a flat bead to the outside of my cover to give about an eighth of an inch of clearance right where the magnet is mounted. It is flat enough that I don't notice it when my N7 is in use but provides enough buffer that I no longer have an accidental activations of the sensor with the cover folded behind the Nexus.

I highly doubt it since there is no micro USB integrated into it. It's just a piece of plastic so your phone doesn't know it's in it.
Just put an NFC tag on the dock. When you insert it, it will do whatever you programmed it to do.
That dock looks like any ordinary eBay generic piece of plastic, BTW. Nothing special about it, IMO. I have a generic squeeze handle one and it works great with any case. The one in the OP looks to only work naked. Not worth the hassle, IMO.

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering since some phone and dock doesn't need to be connected to switch, which confused me on how does the docking work. Anyway I have some NFC tags but so far the is no good app to automatically enable the driving mode without starting S Voice. I tried tasker and I can configure it to switch to the car mode (the icon appeats) but it doesn't enable driving mode (the one which enable the phone to read out events).

Thanks for the tip. But you could describe it more accurately what did you do?
Is this a secure fit without a bumper? I know passive holder is already available, so I can only assume active holders will follow soon.
Hi, I've only tried it with the flip case on and it fits very snuggly in. I imagine without the case will work fine but will test later.
As the micro USB port is central charges fine s well.
I haven't modified anything to make this work.
Stuck an NFC sticker on the holder and Torque kicks in every time the phone is mounted

The nexus 4 mount came in 2 sizes, one for use with a bumper and one without. Mine was the with bumper size.

The G2 fits very tightly with the flip case and is a bit wobbly with no case but it won't fall out etc

Do you use it with your own case like a quick window one?
Hello just a quick report to provide feedbacks on the following configuration :
LG G2 Official Quick Window + Brodit Nexus4 with bumber version : All fits well. The case opened allows when in the brodit support to charge and see your Full screen without any issue (if you accept to take 30 secs to take care of the power supply connector when inserting the phone in the support)
in a word Thanks 1979crazy for this really good tip.
