My wife and I have unlocked (Sim not Bootloader) ATT Branded Note 4 and S5, can we move over to T-Mobile and successfully receive OS updates through T-Mobile. Are there any other issues that I need to be concerned about?
Thanks
Yes you can move over to the T-Mobile network. However you cannot receive the T-Mobile updates since you do not have an actual T-Mobile phone. You'll have to put in an AT&T SIM card and update on the AT&T network for your phone.
alternatively you can manually flash and ATNT firmaware on your own if you want latest and greatest and security patches.

I just picked up a Nexus 6 secondhand, and was wondering if there is a way to determine whether this is a Google Play device or a carrier variant. It doesn't have any obvious branding so I'm sure it's not an AT&T variant.
Also, let's say it is the T-Mobile variant. Will I need to run a T-Mobile SIM card to get the OTA updates? Or will I still be able to get them with an AT&T SIM card?

they are all exactly the same device. you can buy from sprint, but use on tmpbile if you want. besides for att som locking it until fully paid off, they are all identicle.
@chp,
OTA updates come directly from Google. If there are different carrier variants, you will get the one related to your SIM.
There's only two variants.
The North America 'variant', XT1103, and the international 'variant', the XT1100. This tells us that finally carrier branding is only on the outside and/or with a bit of carrier bloat in the software. No longer affects the hardware.
thank WNRussell next time you see him about. . . . .
I am sure this has probably been asked before but I couldn't find a clear answer.
I have the AT&T version of the Galaxy Note 4. I am thinking of changing my provider to T-Mobile (for a bunch of reasons including I have come to hate AT&T). I know the AT&T version will work on the T-Mobile network as a Smartphone with a T-Mobile SIM. But I have several questions.
1. From what I have been reading, it appears that the AT&T bootloader is locked. Is that correct? So does that mean I won't be able to put in a T-Mobile ROM or a ROM from here?
2. If I can't put in a T-Mobile ROM and unlock the bootloader, how will I be able to get future updates for the phone once I have switched to T-Mobile. I currently have the latest official AT&T OTA release (5.1.1, Baseband N910AUCU2DOI2, Kernel 3.10.40-5613584, etc.). But Samsung has promised Marshmallow for this phone.
Any thoughts anyone? Or should I just break down and buy a T-Mobile phone or a Google Nexus 6P?
Thanks

You can do updates using samsung keis... look into cricket wireless, I hated tmobile, the messed my bills up constantly and the service was iffy... if u have good service with att cricket will be the same for 35 bucks a month. Make sure you carrier unlock your phone with art BEFORE YOU CANCEL!
OK guys, somewhat of a newbie, so try and give me a break. I am looking to upgrade to a Galaxy S8 and came across an unlocked T-Mobile S8. Can I flash the AT&T firmware to this phone? If I run the T-Mobile firmware on the AT&T network, I assume I won't get any updates? What about the radios? I know both are GSM networks and with both the AT&T and T-Mobile S8 sharing the same model number, I assume this won't be a problem.
Anyway, any guidance is appreciated.
Thanks!!!

I believe if it's unlocked from t-mobile, all you have to do is put your sim in it. Given they are both GSM and all the relevant info is stored on sim card and not the phone

you will still get updates from t-mobile. i am using a note 4 unlocked from tmobile on at&t for about a year, getting my s8+ tomorrow actually. the only thing you have to do is add at&t apn settings which are easy to find if you google. i would like to know if its possible to flash another carrier and then flash back to the phone's original carrier tho
I was wondering if I should take the update from att for my unlocked note 8? I am planning on installing my Verizon SIM in the phone next year. Or are there special updates that comes from sammy?

Unlocked means it will work on all the networks. It provisions to the SIM to better utilize the hardware in your phone. When you switch to Verizon, it will switch to their network bands.
I have a Verizon branded Galaxy S8, and I may plan to move to T-Mobile in the future. I know a lot of folks have either flash stock Samsung firmware or T-Mobile firmware, but I read that thanks to a recent update, the phone will adapt to any SIM card that's inserted into the phone. Is this true? Will a T-Mobile SIM work in a Verizon branded phone without flashing the phone first with features like MMS and Wi-Fi Calling?
Would there be any added benefits to flashing a stock or T-Mobile firmware at this point?
Thanks!

For the most part yes they adapt themselves now. Some have to be SIM unlocked but I believe the Verizon model already is. It should say SIM inserted please restart. It will install all the t mobile junk including any volte or WiFi calling. They might have.
I actually put in my Simple mobile sim card into my unlocked Verizon S8 and calling works but im not getting any decent data even tho i live in a area. With good coverage. Would i have to somehow flash tmobile radio? I been corrected the apn settings
Professor may have to manual add the access point. I had to when I did a verizon Z force 2 to Att.
