Excellent. Looking forward to it
On en.miui.com it is said that bootloader can be unlocked at request like in latest miui versions of other models. For me this choice makes perfect sense: if you are good enough you can unlock it, otherwise they don't encourage it

"If you are good enough..." - What does that mean ? As is in if you are a tech head or ?
EDIT:
Until someone actually uses it and proves it does it job, ideally Xiaomi themselves. Don't trust it.

It will be locked - http://en.miui.com/thread-231030-1-1.html
and receiving unlock code from xiaomi will take months if you are just a normal member of miui forum. Even after that, it is possible you are stuck by some weird errors .. just take a look at redmi note / 4c forum.
Thought to but MI 5 on first day.. but not anymore.. have to search for other alternative.

Wich errors? Can you briefly describe them?
Will it be possible to flash the rooted global version on locked bl? That's all I ask at least for months
"Will it be possible to flash the rooted global version on locked bl? That's all I ask at least for months" I'd really like to know that as well
You need an unlocked bootloader to flash roms
As long as xiaomi dosent make unlocking bootloader complicated ...I am ok with it ...but if we have to get codes ,permission etc for xiaomi it will be a hassle ...
either way this beast has to be unchained ...sooner than later I hope

Because if the bootloader was unlocked by default, people could hack into your phone or access it's data by bypassing the code on the lock screen

not like a locked bootlocker is synonymous with encryption, nor that it makes a phone unhackable. so if that is really their argument, i call bull****!
I dont get this locking at all, be it xiaomi, samsung or whoever. If I buy a smartphone, I want to own it, having full control over both hard- and software. Anything less is unacceptable to me.
If I buy a computer or laptop, I can always install another OS on there and am not forced to use the software that came with it. Why can't smartphones be the same?

Well see that is the thing. There are not opensource bootloaders for Android that could completely replace the bootloader on the device. If you did remove all the OEM software on a device you would have to load even the base bootloader by a jtag device before you would even flash an OS to the device. The bootloader is under the TOS you agreed to when you bought the phone. The hardware you own. The software you buy a license to use. You dont own it.
As for why they do it. One guy got an email reply when he asked and it is simple. They didnt like people removing their services (which is how they make money) So they locked the bootloader so you could only flash MIUI roms with their inbuilt services. Anything else they say is just more BS to come from them.
Also for your PC comment. That has recently changed. The windows 10 32 bit computers come with a locked bootload as well, you have to go through a TON of bs to get it unlocked.

Why? They've been out over a year right? If anything that pattern is indicative of a pretty long wait for mi5 sources.

Mi3 was launched in late 2013. I bought it on like September 2014. No custom ROMs were available. Some months later Ivan (he is not official Dev). But his work is closest to official ones. So hopefully he may release AOSP ROM from official sources (he doesn't share them).
About Mi3 kernel sources, they were delaying it. And it was said that once Mi4 will launch they will release. After launch more delays. And finally after months passed of Mi4 launch they released the kernel source. (it may not have all the modules)
But for Mi Note, it's relatively quick.
Similarly it may take few months.

I'm guessing Ivan will make AOSP rom (based on Marshmallow) for Mi 5 like he has done previously. Should be good
I recently received a Xiaomi Mi 5 device and am unhappy with the stock MIUI (7.2.8.0 Global Stable) functionality.
My previous phone was a Moto E (1st Gen) and several years ago, I had flashed a custom ROM by @TheStrix [from this thread].
What an amazing ROM that was. It provided an optimized version of the stock ROM that fully supported the hardware and provided a great base on which to add required Apps. I used it happily for years and my son still uses it.
I am looking for a Custom ROM for the Xiaomi Mi 5 that meets the following criteria:
1. Must be stable and supported
2. Must support all device hardware fully without losing functionality (example: IR blaster, NFC, fingerprint, 4-Axis OIS, VoLTE, ...)
3. Provide as close an experience to the standard Android OS it is based on as possible (example retain the great integration of the "OK Google" functionality)
4. As few Apps pre-installed as possible without compromising (2) and (3) above. But must include Google Play Store for a smooth way to install whatever apps (Google or otherwise) are needed later.
4. Clear instructions to install the ROM starting with a stock Mi5 device, using a Linux laptop. I am in to the "open source" movement and don't own a Windows device.
I have already spent a lot of time transferring 15 GB of my data to the device, so a way to update the new ROM without losing the data is desirable, but not a must-have.
Thanks in advance for the help and suggestions. Apologies if this thread turns out to be a duplicate.
Further information from a response I received on the MIUI forum.
My ROM version says MIUI Global 7.2.8.0.0 (MAACNDB) Stable. However official ROMs don't have "CN" in the version for Global Stable ROMs. So looks like my device came with an Unofficial ROM.
Xiaomi may only provide a windows-based unlocking tool. I do not know whether it may work correctly with Wine. Qcom 9008 mode may not work but you can still flash via fastboot, and unlocking bootloader is required.
MIUI is stable and all function should work normally but it is not a AOSP-like one. Lineageos 14.1 is stable but not all functions work - QC 3.0 seldom works, touch button does not work well enough on LGD panel. I do not know how to test OIS, but it is said to work.

In your situation, the fake rom situation, you have to first unlock the bootloader and then flash a real/official miUI rom and from there ... go where you want.
remember: DO A BACKUP if you need your personal data; because this operation, done right, will erase everything from the phone.
A good place to look for informations will be here on xda and the official miUI forum

The best custom rom for mi5, in my opinion, are the RR and the AOSCP. Fast, light (in space used and ram engaged) and maintained with love and dediction.
But they have some flaws; flaws widely discussed in their respective threads (here on xda).
My suggestion: if it's the first time for you with the miUI ... Give it a try!
Because it's in fact a custom rom, with many minor (and major) things already at your disposal.

LineageOS is your ROM then.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-5/development/rom-cyanogenmod-14-1-xiaomi-mi-5-t3501971
We'll get the official gemini release tonight.
The place for the mi5 roms in xda is in the front page of the mi5 subforum; there is a section just for them full of info and goodies and pixies and unicorns and etc etc. :
mi5 subforum: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-5
RR stands for Resurrection Remix and AOSCP is also know as CypherOS
But just a couple of hours ago LineageOS has started with the nightly: https://download.lineageos.org/gemini
And yes: do a search before asking a redundant question because all the informations are already here at your disposal.
Everybody here is saying that wating for a custom rom for p8lite2017 is a waste of time because huawei doesn't release the sources, then why does honor 8 have so many custom roms for it ? It has EMUI 5 just like us, it's made by the same company in the same year, how did the devs manage to make roms for it ??
Honor 8 source code is released, for P8 Lite 2017 isn't.

Some developers (also I) take the data of the devices which they own. They do not need the official resources. Therefore, there is not custom rom also from devices his resources were published. I build my custom rom when android 8 is released.

I'd be glad if we can get even just a custom kernel..But if we do get a custom rom, then all the more better!

I already work some time on a EMUI 5 custom rom. Alike for Honor 6x. Only of the Kernel is not enough. We also need 100% Recovery. There is not that.

True. Our Recovery isn't that all stable and consistent. I am not really expecting too much from this phone since its a budget device, and I got most of the things I want and need to work: root, busybox, Viper4Android. The TWRP is a bonus, even if its in a semi-usable state.
It's great if we can have Custom ROMs, but even just a custom kernel will suffice for now.
OFFTOPIC: On another note, I am hoping that Xposed will somehow work for Android 7 onwards. Even without a Custom ROM, that will open a lot of doors for customization.

I bought a Redmi K20 Pro (with unlocked bootloader) and had it shipped to me in Canada, not knowing what the limitations of having an unlocked, Asia/Europe market phone in North America were. I would like to use apps like Google pay and Netflix however my device is obviously not Play Protect certified and registering it with Google's register service doesn't seem to work. I am wondering if there's anything I can do to get my device certified, like flashing an EU rom or somehow "locking" my bootloader.
P.s. I know very little about this kind of stuff so I apologize if I'm missing something obvious here.

1. flash magisk ( also I suggest using custom rom ,like LOS 18 or something else since miui is garbage )
2. use magisk hide on " play store " and " google play services "
3. reboot
your play store should show certified now
To go further on what was said above, even with a locked bootloader you won't get play certified on a Chinese k20 pro. So if you like miui, flash eu.miui. custom roms are just so much better imo, has better features and you'll get far more updates plus play certified and be able to download Netflix and use Google pay come without needing root on those big roms like evo X, pixel experience, eu.miui ect.
Or the easiest method is to just flash magisk but why would anyone want to use Chinese miui anyway. Eu.miui or custom rom is your best bet.
Did you said you are running MiuWHY?
I just wanna mention that rros 8.6.1 gave me 14hrs of sot
The vendor I bought my device from listed this phone as having a global ROM, which I'm not exactly sure what that means aside from having an unlocked bootloader out of the box. Is there any particular downside to flashing an EU ROM if I live in North America?
And yes I happen to be running MIUI 12 Not the greatest experience but I guess it could be worse?
As for custom ROMs I came to this site a while ago (Mid 2019ish) looking for an Oxygen OS port for this phone and couldn't find anything. If that or even stock Android is available, and will give me a stable experience on this phone, could someone perhaps point me in the direction of the relevant discussion?
Edit: Just to clarify, I would absolutely prefer a custom ROM experience similar to Oxygen OS over MIUI, I'm just not sure what's out there in terms of options. If anyone has a good experience with a particular flashed ROM I'd love to hear it!

Not everyone has their phone for sot! I use mine for game a lot and miui's game turbo is really handy for me, along with floating windows feature. The implementation is very handy.

Hey folks. I hope you guys are doing well.
I want to know that should I install custom rom on my redmi 4x? Will it create problem for my device for long term use? If not, then which custom rom is the most stable out there and fast as well. Literally which one will be the best? I want your help. Thanks!
Since there isn't any good compact budget phones out there and I had to change several apps I use because they're not compatible with the 4x's software anymore, I've been researching about this.
The most recommended ROM is PixelExperience, the main downside about it is that has been discontinued. It works on Android 10 and that's an improvement over the 7.1 we have. Here: https://download.pixelexperience.org/santoni
Another one quite recommended is Lineage OS. This one has not been discontinued as far as I know but works on Android 9. Look: https://lineageosroms.com/santoni/
With all the custom roms, just like official ones, there always will be users that say something is not working properly.
I haven't tried any custom rom, ok? I just googled a lot about the options.
Good luck.

From personal experience, I've used Lineage OS 15 and 16 since I bought this phone over 2 years ago. And it has been working great. It takes a beginner some time to get used to flashing, recoveries, testing new ROMs, etc. but that should not be a big issue. The Linage OS wiki has a very good tutorial on how to set the phone up, it should mostly work with other ROMs too https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/santoni/install
