usb issue and root without odin? - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I currently have a note 4 marshmallow 6.0.1 but a few weeks ago before marshmallow got released the phone started charging really slow, it takes about 8 hours to fully charge, tried 3 different batteries, tried 3 different chargers and the issue persist. I tried to connect it to my computer to root it but it shows as unrecognized device, same goes for download mode (tried other computers too with the same result)
I thought it was the usb port so I ordered through ebay and replaced the usb board, it's still doing the same thing, takes about 8 hours to charge, is the fast charge capacitor/chip/controller on the daughter board or is it on the main board?
does anyone know if there is any other way to root the phone without odin as it's showing unrecognized on my pc?

Samsung devices are notorious for charging ports going bad.
Your charging port probably needs replaced fella. And as far as I know Odin is the only way to install TWRP since Towelroot has been patched back in the day.

@renickdp I have a note 4 as well.
I flashed Marshmallow and then a Note 5 port. Now I am having the same issues as you.
Extreme slow charging
(I use the app Ampere)
It's charging at a rate of 220mA
When normally it'll charge at 1020mA or 1700mA
It says I'm connected as a USB Charger, not AC (Which is wall)
Like you, I've tried 3 different power bricks, 4 different cables and 3 different batteries.
The thing that I find ultra werid is that this happened after flashing Marshmallow. I don't think it happened immediately for me but I honestly can't remember.
I am buying a new MicroUSB port and if it works after replacing it I'll tell you if not then this bug obviously has something to do with Marshmallow.

It happened for me about 2-3 days before marshmallow, already replaced the usb board and still the same issue, I'm starting to think is a device issue with the main board because even in download mode the computer shows unrecognized device
does anyone know if the power gets controlled by the usb board or the main board? I was looking at this picture and I was thinking the power management chip is what controls the fast charging and usb device identifier?

Edit: Tested with the ampere app, started at 620mA then a few seconds later started dropping down to 200mA

I don't know. But I have the same issue. I haven't yet replaced my usb board/port but Oh. I'm getting 250mA and below. At the max I'll get 350mA. What model do you have? What ROM / Firmware? (when the issue started)

I'm on stock it happened like 3 days before the OTA 6.0.1 that tmobile released, I updated OTA issue persists, model is the release one, not the newer T3
just received another usb board, will post back as soon I install it

I replaced the USB Port. Now the LCD screen is Broken! (I accidentally dropped it)
Soo.. I don't know if it works or not I'm going to end up getting a new phone most likely.
(I can't boot it into download mode. Not as of rn at least I haven't tried all that much but yea)
@renickdp
I'm sorry I couldn't be more help. It is an absolute pain rn.

I replaced the usb board again, same issue, on device manager on my pc I get a unable to get device descriptor, so I guess what controls the device usb must be defective on the main board

I will probably replace it but I need to do a backup I know I can backup the apk using different apps but, does anyone know any backup method that does not require root or a usb port and backups the app data?

Were you able to fix the issue?
I have the same issue with my Note 5. USB won't work for anything (Gear VR. OTG, Fast Charge) except slow charge. I changed the charging port and same issue. Can figure out what the issue is. Cant even flash firmware thru Odin as USB is not recognized.

used a brand new fast charge cable today that went hot and killed my USB going to check the cable for x'd cables latter on
( not happy )
swapped logic board to another frame to rule out daughter-board , so it must be a chip on the logic board I need to swap over , thankfully donor board around
no longer Trust these cables

tilt not charging with sync cable but with power

Has anyone else experienced this? My tilt will not charge if I use a cable that is a retractable charge/sync cable. The cables work because I use them with other devices and they charge fine. If I plug in my power cable, the tilt charges. If I use a portable battery charger, it charges. If I plug the tilt into the sync cable that came with it (not retractable and plugged into a usb port), it both charges and syncs. But it will not charge/sync if I use the sync/charge retractable cables. Like I said before, they both work because I use them for other devices.
I know this worked prior to cooking my own ROM. But now it does not. I'm not for sure if the two are related.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Alan
Firstly, make sure that under Settings\System\Power\Advanced that the box labeled "When device is on, do not charge the battery when connected to PC" is NOT checked.
If That box is NOT checked, it should work.
Secondly, & most unfortunately, check to see if the USB port on your device is bent, curved slightly, or is slightly lower on the right side.
If it is, then you've got problems & may need to RMA your device
Mine use to do that. It would charge on the AC charger, but would not charge
on a car charger. I eventually had AT&T replace it under warranty.
Take a look at the two pictures below. The top one is what mine looked like
and the bottom one is the new one.

A RMA may not be required, but the truth is, it is even quite possible that the cable is not capable of providing enought power for the kaiser to charge from. From my own experiance of retractable cables I have seen that they were not able to power my USB DVD-RW. While another, single, normal cable was more than capable. Id just like to add that the DVD-RW was meant to be only powered by USB. So try a different normal cable first before RMA. This as well the above posters information should fix your problems. If this helps, your welcome in advanced.

Great Pic Post! I can't tell you how many people have argued with me stating "If the USB is damaged it won't charge at all, anywhere, no matter what".
I certainly know that if it's a curved USB or slightly lowered on the right side it can definitely cause a loss of only car & PC-USB charge because it happened to me. People still argue though saying that's immpossible.
As another poster suggested, try another cable or try your cable on another device.
Im personally using an insten retractable mini USB cable, and I have no problems syncing/charging with it.
Erg. I looked at the usb port and I indeed had a pin bent all the way down. I tried to straighten but of course it broke. I purchased through Amazon (with a two year contract) so I don't think it came with a warranty. So that sucks.
Can anyone recommend someone to repair (close to Houston, TX would be nice ? Or would it be easy to repair it myself by replacing the port?
Thanks!
Alan
I have an unusual problem which is even worse!! My kaiser ONLY charges from the USB port on my computer. I've tried 2 or 3 car chargers now and the orange light comes on for a bit then goes off. Mains charger won't work either - orange light stays on but the battery level continues to decrease. It's a real bummer if I go away anywhere as my phone just eventually runs out of charge!!
Yeah, same thing going on here... my wall charger works when plugged into the phone, but I have a desktop stand charger that stopped working a few days ago... and I have the same thing going on with my phone's port...
I have trouble getting Activesync to pick it up. Usually says "must install 4.5" on my phone. I can usually delete the partnership and reboot and it works, but my pin is slightly bent.
Sucks.
where can i find the pin to fix this myself. Just the part. I looked at mines today and its slightly bent maybe thats why its it doesn't charge. I will look online in google.com but let me know if anything.
You can get it from pocketpctechs.com. I asked them the same question and here is the answer I got:
"Yes, we can sell you the usb port as a part only for $25.00 + shipping. Place the order online for the full service repair, then email me your order number and I can change the order before it's processed."
But of course it requires the skill and tools of soldering.
For whatever reason, my pin became bent in my mini usb port on my phone. It bends down to the right and my phone will no longer charge from my car charger, but does charge from the ac adapter and does charge and sync via usb (thank goodness).
I called ATT for a replacement phone and they told me that this is not covered under warranty. Oh man was I steamed. I told the rep that this was not my fault but was due to faulty manufacturing. I explained that the pin must sustain hundreds if not thousands of events of being plugged and unplugged as the phone must be charged daily due to low battery life. I've only had the phone for 6 weeks. How could this be my fault? So, after much arguing, he agreed to set up the exchange, but warned me that HTC upon receiving the phone may have my account charged $450 stating that this was user induced and not covered under warranty.
Can you all believe this?
Same problem here
Same here, maybe worse
Since I had a Hermes I had problem with this connector. It is not very durable, especially if you use plugged head-sets with the phone in your pocket.
It happened that my kaiser stopped charging properly in the mais, I had to leave it with something forcing from below for it to work : )
Then one day the worst happened, the plastic bit around the pins came off, and it bent, and trying to fix it broke.
end of the story, since 13th of december I gave it back to tmobile and I'm waiting for it to be fixed. They also told me that tmobile could not consider that as been defect. That connector is the ****tiest thing ever!!! How can that be my fault???? Anyway, I have insurance that I can rely on as a last resort...
Going again to the shop to check if there is any news about my telephone.
Meanwhile they try to push a G1 to me, no way...
regards to all

To make the long story short, I took it to the shop, they send to repair, then it came back with a dodgy power button, as they had changed the WHOLE board!!! Send it back to repair, came still a bit weird button, the manager then gave me a new Kaiser, nice end

Xperia Z dead(Reverse Polarity)

So i accidently plugged in the usb the wrong way and the phone shut off. Have tried every button combination and holding down the powerbutton numerous times with no success. Led light doesn't light up and have tried leaving it in the charger for various hours and used different chargers. My next step was to disassemble the phone and hope a battery pull did the trick but that didn't work. However when I disconnect the black battery connector and plug in a usb the red led lights up for about 15 seconds and dissapears.
anyone know any possible solutions? I think my battery might have fried

Is there a way to jump the battery and hope that that works? I've jumped plenty of batteries on phones with removable batteries but I'm not sure if the Z has metal contacts for negative and positve
no one?
normally any device that has DC input (like usb) is secured with diodes so that even when a faulty charger is connected it doesn't fry. But that's my electrical knowledge speaking. Please reply when you found out what the problem is

Alright thx for the info but maybe you had another problem with you charger and the transformation from 12V to 5V was bad, that can't be controlled with only a diode. Or maybe your One X hadn't any security internally because the manufacturer wanted to save money on that component / no place anymore to put it in the phone.
Think I have something similar..... Connected to car charger, led didn't go red, pushed charger in moved wire in phone charger goes off, phone won't start tried all button combos.

Can anyone else comment on this? I recently did this and my Xperia Z will not turn on. Would replacing the battery work or is the damage related to the other internals?

No I don't see any damage to the USB port.
I did the same to my xperia Z1 (reverse biased it using usb and 5 volts wires) The battery however had charge so as soon as I connected the phone restarted and could not charge any more. Any solution please ????
Might be an old post but I had the same problem. I was fixing a cable (18V) and I wanted the range the cable in the corner. I was so lazy to use a screw driver or something else. So I used what I have in my hand: The jack cable, plugged into my phone. So I used the bare part of the cable (Don't ask me why, I don't know). I don't remember if my phone restarted, but he was fine. But not my jack connector. When I plug an earphone it says that my earphones are not recognized. So I change it (by my self) But still the same problem...
Seems like the problem comes from somewhere else.
do you found the fried parts of your phone or fixed it ?
i have same issue today i connected an experimental cable (v+ was placed into gnd pin and gnd to v+) to my lumia 625 and it flashes then shut off immediately now it show no sign of life not charging not turning on
anyone knows what parts have been fried ?

[SOLVED] USB Host Mode problem

Hey everyone,
Yesterday I tried to charge my HTC One by connecting it to my computer. It never had any problem charging up before.
When I plugged it in, my computer connected and then immediately disconnect my phone, when all of the sudden my phone showed up the message "Phone is in USB host mode - Unable to charge phone while in host mode". I must repeat what I wrote: I never had this problem before until yesterday.
The only way for me to charge my phone is by going into recovery mode, wiping cache and plug it into AC power.
I don't know what's the problem and I sure can use any help of any kind.
Thanks a bunch in advance

It has nothing to do with the cable, since I tried using a different cable (my old Xperia Play charging cable) and that didn't work either. And my current HTC cable does charge my phone when I plug it to AC power

first of all, the only 3rd party cable ive found to work with HTC is some Samsung device cables, the layout of the cables which is usually 4 or 5 sometimes more inside the actual cable itself is different, never known a Sony cable to work, they are not built to be universal across all phones.
Basically inside the HTC cable you will have 5 volt+, 5 volt-, data+, Data- and usually some sort of ground, plus surrounded by a foil shield, then plastic coated which is the cable you see.
With it charging on AC just means your 5 volt + and - is ok, doesn't mean the data is ok, it couild be shorting out or anything if its damaged.
Worst case its the charging port in the phone, so I personally would try the cheapest option first.

So.. what are my options? The way I see it, I have 3 options:
1) Use a Samsung charging cable
2) If step 1 fails, repair it at a local repair shop
3) If step 2 fails, keep charging it for life on AC power
Though I don't understand: is it for sure a problem within the phone and has nothing to do with computer drivers? I just want to make sure that if I have it repaired I might as well get all the information I can get

My computer never "changed" it to AC mode, it's just that I can only charge it using AC power

I had a similar problem and i thought my htc had gone defect in the usb port. but for that to happen i needed assurance it was not a pc usb driver/software related issue.
when i installed and removed htc sync manager my phone no longer showed the internal storage. and plus i plug in all sorts of usb drivers and pens to PC
so i formatted my pc to a clean start. plugged in htc one and it worked straight away showing my internal storage
my advice is dont install htc sync manager...it has a habit of messing up the port software wise.
so do a format of your pc or plug to a another laptop/pc or friends laptop/pc

"Moisture in charging port" and Samsung PMC (Power Management Chip)

I've been getting this "Moisture in charging port" message recently and after Googling the symptoms I was very discouraged because "fixes" did not seem to work. Phone would only charge wirelessly and my nexJack Dex would only work when the USB C was plugged in one orientation only, if at all.. Eventually I paid ubreakifix to replace the USB C charging port and the problem has gone away.
Why am I posting this you ask? Seems very straight-forward. However the ubreakifix tech said he found evidence of a PMC failure and some "electricity was leaking" and causing the battery to age faster and will cause other failure modes to the phone such as I was experiencing. I was/am skeptical because the only method he used was to plug some "special" equipment into the USB C port. He was confident that he didn't need to recheck after the port replacement.
Has anyone else encountered a PMC problem with their Note 8? There is actually a YouTube video of a PMC Note 8 replacement---not for the faint of heart.
Hi, test to clean data and cache on USB Setting (system application) and reboot.... It's OK for me now.

Same happened to me few times, especially after going to swim and put my phone in my wet pockets, the solution was to plug the original charger (even with the message of moisture) and reboot. After the reboot the phone was able to charge via USB again, although I charge it wiresly most of the times.
I don't know but several persons helped that method, maybe just a software error.
I have the suspicion they're reading data from the phone, not directly from the hardware; and if that data is the result of a software issue (I'll get to that below), their voltage leak is a faulty assumption. My experience:
Same problem here. I tried a ton of fixes: new cables, new chargers, safe mode boot, USBDevice data wipe, Dalvik Cache wipe, full reset, etc. but none of them worked for me. Closest I got was holding down Bixby button on boot and then plugging in cable-- which would let me charge normally UNTIL I unplugged the first time; would always get moisture detected after that until next reboot....
Was ready to replace hardware at ubreakifix....
UNTIL I found this solution in a single obscure Youtube comment:
1. Reboot
2. Plug in cable on first logo
3. Unplug when 1st logo goes away
4. Quickly plug in again on 2nd logo.
It worked like a charm for me. Now I have no issues.
This confirms to me that there was some odd software flag that was tripped. My guess is that there's a baseline voltage the phone measures for charging, and when the voltage is under that baseline, it throws a moisture error. I bet this sequence causes the phone to measure a new baseline, thus resetting the bad data that tripped the moisture flag previously.
Just a guess, but would make sense.

GT-N7000 Completely Unresponsive - Won't turn on or boot into recovery/download mode

Hello,
Before anyone says there are already threads on this, I can assure you that I have spent days scouring through the forums to find a solution to my problem but cannot quite find the exact issue I've experienced.
As usual, I plugged my phone in to charge before I went to bed. I woke up in the middle of the night (as one does) and went to unplug it only to find the Kernel Panic Upload Mode message on a black screen. This has happened a couple of times in the past so I wasn't bothered. This is what followed:
Removed charger from phone.
Pushed power button, phone attempted to restart but hung on start up screen (Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 screen).
Repeated step 2 with same result.
Pulled the battery
Put battery back after a few seconds, pushed and held power button but there was no response.
Tried to boot into either recovery or download mode without success.
Tried all the button pressing/batttery removal sequences listed in the forums without success.
Charged battery fully on external charger and tried again.
These are my observations:
This is not a screen issue, the phone does not turn on and is not detected bu my PC, ODIN or anything else.
There is nothing wrong with the battery. (I have a multimeter).
There is nothing wrong with the charger (I have since used it to charge 2 other phones).
There is nothing wrong with the charging port (there is 5V on the VBUS line).
No voltage on +ve battery connector pin when charger is plugged in, with battery removed.
4.2V on +ve battery connector pin when charger is plugged in and battery is inserted.
Approximately 1.5V on +ve battery connector pin when battery is inserted but phone is not plugged in.
No current flows from battery no matter how long it is left in the phone or how many times power button is pressed. Battery voltage remains the same.
Phone is warm directly above the battery connector. Not hot but noticeably warm. Can someone please tell me which chip is behind the shielding? I've searched but all I found were EMMC and PMIC which are not in this location.
Important points:
Phone running on NightOwl LineageOS 14.1 Android 7.1.2 20180824 by Bauner for 2 years without any issues.
I have tried a USB jig but it doesn't do anything.
What could be wrong? Unlike most of the people who have had this problem, it wasn't a result of flashing any firmware and I wasn't even using the phone when this happened.

Hi @secondchild
Ditto, exactly the same issue... but on a different rom. Same version of Android, just using Resurrected Remix 5.8.5 (Android 7.1.2)
I've not gone to all the lengths you have with testing the battery, but know it's not battery either as I now have another Note and charge the battery in that. But same thing happened. All was fine charged at night time. Unplugged and put phone in pocket. Got to work, and saw it was stuck on Samsung logo. So I reset the phone, still stuck there. Pulled the battery, back in... and now nowt.
To this day, still not managed to get any life out of it... (hence the other Note). I read another post, where someone had similar issues and they managed to revive 3x dead Notes by placing them on a radiator, to heat up the circuit board. With such a success rate of that, I was keen (but worried something would go pop) try that method. So I moved the battery, stripped the note down so mainly just the circuit board and tried a couple of times.... STILL DEAD!!!
I feel we've suffered S.D.S. with our phones, but don't get why as we are not on that fatal old ICS kernel that caused that. Making me think all other roms/kernels could potentially be UNSAFE !!
Good luck, hope you manage to solve yours... For now, I've given up on mine and may look at it again at a later date... But at moment, I feel mine is toast
Cheers, Lister

I think I've given up too. I'll dabble with it every now and then when I'm bored. I did find out though that the low voltage I was getting on the +ve battery connector pin was due to a faulty connection. The pin was somewhat distorted. When I have time, I will try changing a few components. Don't know if you have the service manual but I'm aiming to find out what happens if I change U607. I suspect it's either that, or one of L607, L608 or R169. I'll let you know how it goes.
By the way, I did try the radiator thing. I wasn't really worried. If you can dry clothes on a radiator then the heat is nothing to a PCB.
