To upgrade to a newer version of Android (and enjoy Material Design), you must flash a custom ROM. Head to the Android Development section and flash a ROM that works with a locked bootloader. If you unlocked your device's bootloader, you can enjoy CM/AOSP-based ROMs. Read the OP of the thread or read THIS for instructions on how to flash. Ensure you have a saved backup somewhere and your device's battery is >50%.
Marshmallow on the Xperia Z1/s is not stable; from what I see, it'll never be.

So if I find a ROM that works with a locked bootloader, I wouldn't have to bother about the difference in Xperia Z1's model?

Well check SUS/PCC for update first, but if there's none there either - Download a 4.2.2 Firmware (there's plenty) and flash with flashtool, there's guide pinned on the forums. Remember not to wipe data if you have important stuff on it.
Search, read and then read some more...

[?] How can I root my Xperia Z1 on 14.3 Kitkat

Hello guys,
I am new to the Android community and especially the Rooting section looks really strange to me (but hey, I used to have an iPhone so who am I kidding )
Anyway, I bought an Xperia Z1 and now I'd like to get Root access on my phone. But every tutorial that I found requests, that I already have Root access on a lower OS version. Why? It doesn't make sense to me.
I am currently on unrooted Android 4.4 Kitkat (14.3).
Thanks for your patience with a "newbe"
Read one of the sevral guides in the general section and the development section.
If you are new I advise you to spend some time reading otherwise you could brick your phone. It may seem like a pain, but trust me, spending some time learning will help you
for starters, android is only at 4.4.2 as the latest version, not 14.3 (That's the FW version)
Greg
You downgrade using flashtool and flash a FTF
Look in the FTF mega collection thread in the general section to learn how to do that
The reason is that it is impossible to directly root 4.4.2, you have to downgrade to a rootable version and then upgrade to a prerooted 4.4.3 version

You might like to consider looking at this thread..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3042439
Also if you are new try to avoid unlocking the bootloader..
If you decide to unlock it first thing to do is to take backup of ta before unlocking..
So for time being i suggest playing with roms for locked bootloader as they are easy to unbrick and also no warranty is void..

Does Xperia™ Companion software find unbranded ROMs?

Hello. Sorry if this is a silly question; first time Xperia user here. Does the Xperia™ Companion software find unbranded ROMs that don't come OTA? I have a UK o2 Z3+ and want the latest official Sony stock debranded ROM. Could you tell me if the Xperia™ Companion software would download this for me or will it only bring up carrier-modified ROMs as if I were to check OTA?
Thanks!
Hi,
Any reason why you want to use the Xperia™ Companion software? From what you describe, it sounds as if you'd be better going with Flashtool/Xperifirm. You can freely choose from the available roms. Google for a guide for creating the FTF and flashing it.
Should work without B.L. unlocking as long as you're not trying to flash a modified kernel, but your phone will need to be carrier unlocked if you want to move from o2.
Cheers!

Hi,
Actually I love stock Rom only because they are very stable as compared to AOSP custom Rom.
But here in our country the STock Rom comes with lots of bloat. Is it possible to create a stock FTF by self with the help of Flashtool which doesnt have the bloats and useless apps so that my system run lagless. I dont want to unlock my Bootloader.
Any help will be higly appreciated.

there's nothing in FlashTool to allow you to work on the rom. You'd need to deodex the stock rom, work on it to remove what you don't want, then zipalign. there are guides to doing that, or you could watch the discussions here and see what happens. There was talk of someone creating a deodexed image.
Here's a thread regarding deodexing/zipaligning
BR.
deodex needs root
And z3+ BL needs to be unlocked to aquire ROOT. So I think its impossible.
