I had been using my Captivate for a while, and used Kies mini to upgrade to Froyo, and everything had been working fine until randomly the phone wouldn't boot.
It would take forever to go from the AT&T home screen, and would lag through the galaxy s intro, and then stop.
I tried to use Recovery mode, and it didn't work, so I tried to use Odin3 to flash back to stock.
Now it won't go past the Logo screen, and recovery mode doesn't work, but download mode still does. I have tried Odin one click, and Odin three click v 1.0, 1.3, and 1.7. I've used the .tar and the .pit from Breakin' Ranh's [Guide] How to Recover a Captivate to Stock 2.1 Eclair JH7
It keeps getting stuck in a boot loop after odin, no matter what I do.
Any suggestions?
Using SGH-i897
1007
first boot takes along time to build new files and delvik.. are you sure you waited long enough?
keep trying to get into recovery. try holding the buttons a little after the screen comes on.
factory wipe/ clear phone/
It keeps going to the AT&T logo screen for like 10 seconds, and then goes to the spinning wheel/battery charging screen, and then reboots.
Can't get into recovery mode through it, still.
a different .tar package.... dunno about that one..
or flash to 2.2 tar package
I have to use rom manager to get to recovery on my captivate

I was able to use a dragon rom to get it to boot, but now my phone wont give me any access to my internal sd card, and won't mount my external, so I can't download rom manager because I "have no room" Where do I go from here?
I've already tried formatting both cards, and it seems like nothing happens whenever I click on format.
you dont need rom manager....ever
Then what does he need?

I can get into download mode (only with a JIG tho) but when I go back to stock with Odin (or try to) it's just stuck in the AT & T logo screen, it doesn't go beyond that, how do I get into recovery mode, press both Volume buttons and Power button, when the AT&T screen comes release the Power button right?
Need some help please!
you might need to flash the 3 button fix but keep trying, if you get into recovery clear data and cache. but first boot always takes a long time as it has to build delvak cache and more... try flashing again, with the 3 button fix att rom.
3 button fix? to get into download mode you mean? I CAN get into download mode (with the jig) but not into recovery mode :-s
I have no idea how to flash it without being in the Stock rom, any help?
download is 2 buttons
recovery is 3 button.
some phones loose the 3 button combo to get into recovery.
in that case you need to flash the stock rom with 3 button fix.
it is for Att only so i dont know much more.
After Odin, I was in a boot loop yesterday. I plan on writing it up in a new thread to see if someone can help me understand what happened (cause I have Odined and modded two different cappys without issue) but here is how I was able to recover.
After Odin was complete and said successful, it reboots the phone.
Upon reboot I was in the ATT boot loop. After Odin, I lost both three button recovery and 2 button download (both of these worked before Odin). I don’t have a JIG so no way of getting to download mode.
I read to try the following sequence after reading it other posts.
1. Pull battery, sim, SD card and unplug the USB. Let it sit for a minute.
2. Plug in the USB cable.
3. Holding all three buttons, plug in the battery.
4. The battery charge (grey) should be seen on the phone. After the phone screen goes black twice let go of the power button.
This worked for me once, after several attempts.
Now that the phone booted back up, I did a master clear with Odin.
Upon reboot right back in to the ATT boot loop screen.
Was not having any luck with the steps above after several attempts.
Here is how I eventually recovered.
1. I opened Odin on the PC.
2. Pulled the battery and USB for a minute or two then replaced it and plugged in the USB cable.
3. After few cycles of black battery icon and spinning wheel, the batter icon turned green (like normal when you turn your phone off and plug it in). Sometimes this only took two cycles and sometimes many cycles (or a few minutes).
4. Once the battery icon was green, I hit the power button.
5. As soon as you see the ATT screen, pull the USB cable and the phone booted (if I left the USB plugged in, the phone went back to the black battery screen after the ATT screen).
6. I copied the correct Update.zip and Rom to my SD card.
From here I tried to boot into recovery via ADB.
The phone rebooted but back into the ATT boot loop.
Following the second set of steps above (2-3 times), I was finally able to get into Clockwork recovery.
From here I flashed Phoenix Unleashed.
After the flash rebooted and the phone seems to be running fine now (with the exception that I lost my 3 and 2 button combos, but that will be for a different thread).
From the Power Menu, I can get into download mode or Recovery no prob.
Not sure if this is something that will work for others but wanted to throw it out there just in case.
It never booted for me, so this is what I did
For anoyone that might find this thread, Odin 1 Click didn't work for me, so I flashed back into stock using Odin (not the 1 click version, another one), here are some links that proved to be very helpful (I ended up Flashing to Serependity 6.4):

FIXED:
Used this version of Odin to get me into recovery mode:

Is there any hope for me?
Running stock 4.0.4 on my unrooted GT N7000. Phone was plugged in and charging (nearly full 89%) when I tried to use swipepad to launch my goole reader app. Everything froze while still in swipepad and was unresponsive for about five minutes while I waiting for a crash report. Crash report never came so I tried the power button. No response, still showing the frozen swipepad screen. Took the battery out and put it back in again, hit the power button and it shows the galaxy note launch screen (Galaxy Note GT N7000 in white on the black screen). It stays there with no change (this is a bootloop, right?).
I've tried going into recovery mode (vol down, home and power) and nothing happens, it just goes into the bootloop. Tried to get into odin mode (vol up, home and power) and I can get to the warning screen where you can select either boot as normal, or download mode. Boot as normal leads to bootloop, download mode gets immediately frozen.
I've also tried the "take battery out, hold volume, home and power while replacing battery" process with no luck
What happened? What did I do? What do I do?
I'm dying here.
As far as I can tell, all solutions I've seen have involved access to recovery mode....

You are not in a bootloop (which is when the bootanimation repeats over and over) you are stuck in the splash screen. Anyway, that is not important. As you are running the stock ICS firmware which has the brick bug, I would suggest you flash the rom again in ODIN PC. Find your firmware and follow the tutorial in here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
DO NOT TRY TO WIPE ANYTHING IN STOCK RECOVERY.

Thanks for clearing that up (re the bootloop vs stuck in the splash screen), but looking through the tutorials, even with Odin installed on the PC, I'll need to get access to the recovery mode.
I can't boot into recovery mode. What then? Is there any way to flash a rom without recovery mode access?
From what I know you need recovery or download mode to flash a ROM you may want to order a USB jig and see if you can get it to down load mode that way other then that you may be bricked

My USB port is tempermental. OTG has been out of commission for a while.
So basically, through no fault of my own and without any recourse my phone is dead.
That's just great.
So, is this Google's fault, or Samsung's?
If you have not modified the phone be it kernel, rooted it, or custom ROMs then it would be a Samsung issue in my opinion anyways

Hmph.
Well thanks again.
I guess a terminal diagnosis is still a diagnosis.
Gutted.
I have a problem with my note and i really don't know what to do. I'm sorry if there is another post about this issue but i've not been able to find anything that matches.
Last night my phone refused to unlock even though i had just used it. I decided to reset the phone by holding down the power button. I tried to turn my phone on this morning but it would not boot up properly. The screen that says "Galaxy Note N7000" appears and will stay for a few seconds; it will either turn black and load the same screen again, or it will quickly show the little android person with the spinning orb in it's belly. It will continue this loop unless i take the battery out. Whilst like this, the back of the phone heats up quite a lot as well. I can enter odin mode by holding the volume down key but i cannot enter recovery mode by holding volume up.
Seriously, is there anything i can do to get my phone to reboot??
Thanks.
if you can get into download mode, try to flash stock rom again. Go here to download stock rom and for how to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
Edit: make sure you battery is charged more than 50%.
Edit: even before you try all these steps, flash philz kernel (.tar file) from pc odin and then see if you can enter recovery mode, if yes, wipe cache partition and dalvik cache and reboot the device to see if it works.
Ok, so there are a lot of threads about soft bricks and bootloops, I have answered in a lot of threads but it seems it needs separate thread to explain how to "revive" your phone from bootloops and soft bricks.
First of all, I don't guarantee that it will work but mostly this tricks do their job.
Tricks were tested and worked on many phones, but I don't take responsibility for hard bricked phones after performing tricks from this thread.
Sometimes you need to repeat process because everything must be done with perfect timing. Also if one method won't work try another.
1. Prepare your phone to press recovery combination and while plugging phone to USB or charger, hold keys and release when samsung logo appear. Do Factory reset in recovery
2. (the best) turn on phone into download mode and don't accept terms, when phone will reboot quick hold recovery combination and release when samsung logo appear. Do Factory reset in recovery
(3). Emergency download mode (when phone wib but don't turn on screen) - take off battery for few minutes, after that time hold download combination and insert battery, wait few seconds (so normally it would boot and enter dm), accept terms by pressing volume down, connect USB and flash stock Rom
4. usefull tip - Always have backup created in CWM on phone, you never know when it will be needed. What I do is creating backup every week/two weeks, also I have stock backup. I really recomend to create backup before flashing CM while you are on stock (it will guarantee everything will 100% work if something fails), it helped me a lot of times.
(recovery combination - volume up, volume down, power, home)
(download mode - volume down, home, power / accept terms volume down, decline - volume up)
In 1 and 2 "just in case" you can flash stock Rom, when it will start to reboot after Odin finish flashing, take off battery and insert again (to stop boot process) phone should boot into recovery normally but repeat point 2 to be sure.
Also, what is importiant, ALWAYS have turned on debug mode in your usb settings, first thing you should do after flashing CM, turn on debug mode.
===================================================================================================================================================
When you are switching from CM to stock, after flashing stock you will have almost 100% chance that you will have bootloop on samsung logo. You have to factory reset before first boot. So, after flashing stock, when odin will proceed reboot your phone, unplug phone and take off battery (take off battery cover before flashing, but be careful not to drop battery while flashing via odin, it would be really really bad for your phone, hold phone and battery all the time). After inserting battery back and assemble cover, go to recovery and do factory reset.

Thanx man it worked. Several attemps in 2 days.

Thank you for this ! The decline download mode agrements , press recovery combination trick worked , I managed to get to recovery ! I flashed stock rom 3 times and tried repartition with pit ...but this is the only thing that worked ! Thank you
Now I have a Idea about a Un-brick:
1. If you want to return (after a Forget a clean data/cache/dalvik) When You can downgrade with .md5 Stock ROM (or Custom)
2. If Recovery Doesn't works... You can only Download Mode (Volume Down + Home + Power) - Remember it's that's not with SIM/SD Card [Maybe that's optional if it forget but I will be recommend.]
3. Flash to Newest "ClockWorldMod"
4. After Restart - That's must be take off battery and Connect USB Cable to SGMII
5. Let's Turn On Recovery Mode with a "Samsung Logo" Before Input Battery [With a Battery it's doesn't does it Start,on Fortunately...]
6. And... Let's to clean data/cache/dalvik... And that's All of "Open source Unbrick"
What Did a get:
+ Downgrade ROM without a Additonal Box (Because that's Open source with a Easy-Root and Not Close-Source as a Self of Old Sony Ericsson Tuning - But I Like a Old Sony Ericsson's Too ... And "Sony" looks from a 2007 about a Modifications and Sony is not a blocked for Android - Fortunately... And for a Today Some users remembers about a Big Seasons Tunings from K310i or K550i [I had a Two phones... That's nice what I discovered about a ROM's Modifications... And Let's praise for Sony that's Not blocked for Androids... Thank you,Sony. ]
+ That's can be again to Upgrade eg. Cyanogenmod
And... A knowledge... Hope that's share a help.
might want to consider adding this
Hi OP, you might want to add this to your thread..
so, early this week, i faced a bad bootloop situation after the software update.. Even with a normal boot (no vol+,home button and power button pressing), my phone will still be stucked at CWM recovery..
Note that my phone was working fine, only the software update caused my phone to stuck in the CWM bootloop..
So, what i did was, i updated my CWM 4.0.8.2 [ my bad, cause when i rooting my phone initially last few weeks, and i've been reading outdated threads].. So, i updated my CWM 4.0.8.2 to CWM 6.x through CWM recovery..
Then, after it rebooted, i go to download mode, connect my phone through ODIN and flashed stock rom.
Now, it is working fine like new..
So first things first:
I am not a noob, I have been flashing phones for years
The phone has an UNLOCKED bootloader
I know what a bootloader/recovery are etc
So last night I upgraded my phone to 6.0.1. I then decided to root it and get a kernel on for color control. So I download one of the new kernels (Elementalx) for 6.0.1 and the systemless root that he recommended in his post. I flash both files and boot the phone, the phone bootloops twice after the password to boot screen and then it works fine. I install a few things adjust a few things (nothing pertaining to root) and then before I jump into the shower I reboot it. I look at it after a few minutes and it is sitting at the google screen with the padlock, no worries it has happened before so I reboot it only to be met with this same screen. Over and over it just halts here. I do the button trick to get into the bootloader, no dice. No button combination can get me past this screen.
I then go over to my PC and try it out and see if I am getting a Q_BULK issue (I had it happen to my Galaxy Nexus before) and the PC doesn't even acknowledge it, so now I am getting a little worried. I cannot power off the device normally, it just reboots back to here. I can manage a trick with the power cable and some quick button presses to enter the "charging" mode and from there it appears to shut down. Upon boot though it comes right back to this halt. :-/
So, does anyone have ANY experience with this before I contact Motorola? I really don't want to because I have frame swapped and don't look kindly on the process of undoing it for a replacement, but if it must be then it must be. Below is a TLR
Phone boots to Google/padlock screen
CANNOT access the bootloader/recovery through normal means
PC does not recognize it (I did prior in both fastboot and recovery so the drivers are all installed)
the phone does NOT appear to be in Q_BULK
the phone will not shut down, it just boots back to here
It "was" running ElementalX and the systemless root (both are the newest) for 6.0.1
-Current status, sitting on this screen waiting to die... but it has an almost full charge
OK, first off... YOU ARE A NEWBIE.
Turn off the phone and boot to bootloader and use that to load your custom recovery and restore your working backup.
Failing that, fastboot flash the stock image from bootloader mode.
What are you hoping to accomplish by draining your battery completely, this can only make matters worse.
@scryan you are a funny man?
you didnt say anything about trying to get into recovery.. i assume you tried getting unto your recovery?
Hold power button, up and down button all at the same time. If you are on stock recovery wipe user data and cache. See if you can boot into the bootloader afterwards. That's unusual you cannot get into stock or custom (if you have it) recovery.
So you're main problem here is that you can't get into your bootloader or recovery right now? Hmm..... that can't be good. My best guess would be to keep trying to get it into your bootloader, just keep on holding volume down and power for a long time, hopefully if you can get into either bootloader or recovery you can fastboot flash a clean stock image, or restore a nandroid backup (assuming you have one) with TWRP. My best guess though.
Briefly, your device powers on, so there's sign of life. It is either your cable, pc' usb port or the usb socket of the phone is at fault. Did you try with another usb cable at another usb port in the pc ?
Let the phone power down completely. And when it dies, connect it to a charger while briefly holding the vol down button to get into the bootloader. It might take a while since the phone doesn't have any juice but this trick might just work.
If already no warranty, so dissasembly the deive, re-attack your battery
