That very much depends on the kind of device you plan on getting, what OS version the device ships with, and your level of familiarity with rooting. Could you give me a price point and a seller for the device you want to get? I'm guessing you want the latest Fire, which can be found here.

That device's codename is ford, and the XDA forums for that device may be found here. This would be the wrong forum for this discussion, but I'll provide you some important things to know for the Ford (my sister has that same device, so I've done a lot of reading):
Always read the forums. This can't be stressed enough, and I highly recommend you read the forums before you even purchase the device. I haven't covered everything, and there's likely new developments coming that I've missed. I'm giving you a general primer, but this is by no means complete. Definitely read the development threads, help threads, and other device forums before you do anything with the Fire (including buying it or setting it up for the first time!).
If you get the Fire, it's possible that it'll ship with an older software version (hopefully 5.1.4 or lower). 5.1.4 isn't rootable itself, but it can be downgraded to 5.1.2 (which is rootable). Once you have root, you'll likely want a custom ROM, so make sure to get that flashed as soon as you can once rooted.
If/when you get the Fire, do NOT connect it to wifi or otherwise set up the device via Amazon's wizard. If you do, the Fire will OTA update to 5.3.1.0, which is neither rootable nor downgradable (as of the time of writing). Given time and resources, I'm sure somebody will find a root exploit for that version as well, but don't get your hopes up too quickly.
Downgrading is complex and may not work. For example - you cannot downgrade 5.3.x to 5.1.x or 5.0.x, and you also can't downgrade 5.1.x to 5.0.x. Amazon enforces anti-rollback protection checks at the hardware level if I remember correctly, and downgrading between versions like that will brick the device.
Custom recoveries (like TWRP) can't be booted, especially with 5.1.x or later bootloaders. From what I've read, one can boot TWRP via fastboot on 5.0.x releases, but that was patched with the 5.1.x bootloader. To flash ROMs, you'll need to use Chainfire's FlashFire. Again, you will need to look through the device forum for specific directions.
In short, here's what I'd recommend you do:
Keep tabs on the forums often.
When you buy, cross your fingers and hope you don't get 5.3.x preinstalled.
When you get the Fire, do NOT connect to wifi or go through the setup wizard.
Check your software version (again, don't connect to wifi). If you have 5.3.x, wait for a root exploit. If you have anything below that, read the forums and then downgrade (if necessary), root, and flash a ROM as soon as possible.
Good luck!

thank you for all the info. that i needed. i hope it comes with 5.1, i had a feeling not to have it on wifi but thank you for the heads up, i wont get my hopes up cause i know these companies dont wont us to root our devices even tho the gov. passed that we can do what we want with it that we paid fior
im not to worried about MM as i am staying away from phones and android devices that can no be rooted and if i am suck with one, it either be a Netflix device, camera or dust collector
my elipises tablet almost became a dust collector cause its a sucky tablet from Verizon but i was able to disable most of the bloatware without root and there is no support that well for it

[Q] New to tablets and ROM

Hello ya'll, I'm new to the forum, I joined because of the wealth of information here.
So I'm not new to Android, had one ever since I was 16. I rooted both my droid phones(droid X with that awesome slider keyboard, and RAZR MAXX) to remove those pesky bloatware apps, but didn't ROM them, as it just wasn't something I wasn't aware of when I did it. So rooting was as far as I got.
But rooting and ROM-ing a tablet seems like it could be a daunting job, I'm new to the tablet world But I already have most of the tools, from previous roots, minus a few that are platform specific that I'm currently downloading to support the new CROMBi-X
I figure I'll go about getting everything I need, so when I get my tablet back from the shop, I'll be able to dive right into the CROMBi ROM.
//
I don't want to brick my tablet so hence the questions I am unclear on.
//
Question 1: Asus doesn't have the standalone unlock tool on their website. How do I go about getting that tool to unlock the tablet? Was it done OTA or downloaded and installed onto the tablet?
I have searched a few places, and browsed the developer forums, but haven't come up with a surefire way yet. I've seen everything from asking ASUS to unlock the tablet, to flashing CWM recovery, and than flashing a rooted version of the stock ROM, 've read several of the forums, but I need a little bit of "English" on the topic, as this is something new to me. I did come across a root.zip link but I'm not entirely sure that is what I am looking for, or if it is version/BLoader specific. If it is, then that pretty much covers that question.
Question 2: Are all the drivers on the ROM? Or do I need to use something like [ADB/FB/APX Driver] Universal Naked Driver 0.7?
Question 3: Mods. Are they downloaded OTA from the play store, or is there a list of compatible mods for the ROM? I realize that most of them are probably cosmetic right? I'm probably asking in the wrong forum, but since this is LINUX based, once rooted, if I put Ubuntu on the tablet, and then run a ROM on top of it? or Do I have to choose between one or the other?
I'm only asking because I run a few programs that aren't able to run on the android platform that I use for recreational purposes.
Anyway, that about covers a few of the base questions I have for now. Time to get ready for work. Thanks for any help in advance!
For 1:
It's on ASUS website
www.service.asus.com/#!downloads/c1wax
Version V1.0
Unlock Device App: Unlock boot loader of TF701T.(Only works with 4.2 JB and later OS)
For 2:
It's been a while since I rooted however I think you only need fastboot to be able to put the custom recovery on the tablet. If you have ADB/FB drivers already installed your pc should see your tablet without an issue. I don't know what APX is.
For 3:
Not sure what you mean by Mods. And last I checked I don't think that you can and Linux to this tablet yet however even if you could you only get one or the other.
Oh and make sure you read through all of the instructions for rooting and roming

sleepy2 gave you the link. You find the Unlock Tool under "Utilites" on the TF701 downloads page

First you need to determine what firmware you are running now and decide which JB version you want to run.
Check under Settings > About Tablet > Software version. On stock your firmware version and bootloader version are identical.
If you are on JB 4.3 you have either 10.26.1.7 or 10.26.1.18 (if you have the former, update to .18)
If you are on JB 4.4.2 you have 11.4.1.17
On JB 4.3
a) You can root the tablet without unlocking the bootloader with Towelroot v1.
b) You can unlock, flash CWM and then flash sbdag's stock rooted rom, one of several custom roms or just the root.zip
On JB 4.4.2
Right now there is no way to root without unlocking the bootloader and flashing a custom recovery first.
Once unlocked and with CWM installed, you can flash sbdag's rooted stock rom or flash the root.zip.
CROMi-X 7.0 for 4.4.2 is in the works. I do not know if the other custom roms (CM, CROMi-X 6, CROMbi-KK) are compatible with the 11.4.1.17 bootloader yet, but that's just a matter of time.
To install CWM follow the insructions here:

Try it. I did not have to install new adb/fastboot drivers and the device drivers installed on my PC automativcally. YMMV
Open Device Manager, then connect the tablet. Let the drivers install and see if it shows up in Device Manager.
Then boot the tablet into fastboot, connect it to PC and see if it shows up as a fastboot device.
Enable USB debugging in Developer Options, then connect the tablet booted into Android and see if it shows up as ADB interface in Device Manager.
If you need drivers you can use the ones you mentioned.
Question 3: Mods. Are they downloaded OTA from the play store, or is there a list of compatible mods for the ROM? I realize that most of them are probably cosmetic right?

You'll find mods in the rom thread or at least the links for those that work with that rom.. No OTA updates

There's a thread in the TF700 dev section on dual booting Android and Ubuntu. Not aware that anybody has tried it on the TF701.
Thanks for the link Sleepy! I had searched the website a couple times before, but I must have missed that part of it. Every other time I went somewhere to find it, it came back page unavailable. I'm really disliking this Kuwaiti right now! Well I won't know until I get the tablet back what JB is on it, but I imagine it would be sent back to a factory setting because of the issues I was having, or just get a whole new tablet all together depending on what was causing it not to charge.
I appreciate the clarification on everything guys, without the tablet in my hands I'm pretty much downloading everything I can that might help me out. I already have CWM, and several versions of it to be on the safe side.
I have been doing nothing but non-stop research, but it's daunting to try and go through 115 pages of information and tools, and version changes and what's compatible and how to use them. Watching videos has simplified it a little bit.
The reason I asked about Ubuntu, was I saw it dual booted to an older CROMi 2.X on the 700T
I used to run XP pro/Ubuntu on my laptop. Which was really nice when I needed a lightweight OS to free up processing power. Well before I had to format due to a near catastrophic drive failure and unrepairable data corruption. Anyway, that is a project for another time, one thing at a time!
I'll be around, busy with work 6 days a week!
Thanks again!

List of repairs done
So what I thought was a simple battery not charging issue turned out to be a host of things. I had to have the LCD, Touchpadboard, Docking cable and LCD cable replaced, luckily I was under warranty. I imagine that would have been expensive!

Unable to root tablet running 5.1.2

I have a Fire 5th gen tablet running v5.1.2 and am very much looking to root it with the aim of installing stock Android. Most of the resources I found online suggest the best rooting tool is KingRoot., however after several attempts and reboots it always fails to root the tablet. Although, now that I think about it, I've come across references on this site of people who were only successful on the 4th reboot; don't think I tried that many times in a row.
Unsure if this is useful information but the tablet was bought from UK Amazon store and it states a software version has been downloaded but not yet applied.
What options do I have to root the tablet? If there is a better tool out there for the job, please let me know. Likewise, if all I need to do is downgrade the software, I'll try it. I'll do anything to rid it of Amazon's-branded version of Android.

There are two different FireOS versions that report 5.1.2 and only one of them is rootable (542168620). Many user reported that the rooting process works best if the device is not yet registered to Amazon.

Yep. Also be weary of the downloaded update which will likely push your tablet to 5.3.x which is not rootable.
You can rollback FireOS 5.1.2.1 to version 5.1.2 which can be rooted. Everything you need can be found in the forum index.

So how would I avoid that? Kingroot insists on internet access, and given that it often requires multiple tries, I am afraid it will give Amazon plenty of time for OTA update.

Partial FireOS downloads are discarded each time the device reboots. Kingroot reboots with sufficient frequency during the rooting process to prevent a full OTA update from being downloaded with a typical 'home' connection (say <50 Mbps). Another option is the desktop/tether version of Kingroot that does not require the device have a network connection. Downside is the desktop UI is in Chinese but is pretty easy to follow.
Thank you. I blocked the amazon update domains on my router (what I could find at least) and managed to root it. Good to know that it was probably not needed

For the benefit of future readers: blocking domains usually does not work long term to prevent OTA updates as Amazon (or their agents) rotate sources on a regular basis. I suspect this a for load balancing and other housekeeping, not an effort to circumvent user 'blocks'.

Out of the box Firmware

Did anyone's amazon fire tablet 7 come with 5.3.1 out of the box? What version did it come with? I am planning to buy one soon and I was wondering if anyone has bought one that had lower firmware on it? Thanks a lot!!

Based on self reporting the general trend seems to be 5.3.1 but you might receive any version depending on what the shipping warehouse has in stock. If you are seeking an older build (presumably 5.1.4 or lower) your best bet is a local retailer where you can check it out in the store before committing to a purchase. Turnover is often slower so better chance of scoring a 'dated' device.
Ok so my gf bought a Kindle fire for my birthday next month because I thought buy it sooner and it's more likely to have the firmware I want. I just opened it up to check the firmware before packing it away and fortunately it came with 5.1.3 out of the box. I didn't dare connect it to WiFi incase it updated lol. Just incase anyone is interested I bought this from Argos (UK) now I just need to figure out if I can downgrade and install a custom android ROM or just stick with fire OS and root. Fun times ahead

5.1.3 can be rolled back to 5.1.2 which is fully rootable. From there you can flash several custom roms. See forum index for detailed procedures.

Thanks, I looked into it. I just wasn't sure about using flashfire with 5.1.2 because I read before you can't get supersu on 5.1.2 only kingroot. Now I see there's a way to get supersu Can't wait for my birthday now, I feel like a kid again haha.
One question I haven't found the answer to yet which you might be able to answer for me. Well actually two Does the stock recovery have a backup feature like TWRP does? So if I mess up installing something and get a boot loop for example I can just recover the ROM and will that work with backing up an android ROM?
The second question is if I install android and something messes up can I just recover back to fire os by just installing the 5.1.2 .bin file? I've not looked at the stock recovery so I haven't seen the features or how exactly it works.
Thanks again for your help

- stock recovery offers no backup/restore capability (thanks, Amazon)
- FlashFire does offer this feature along with an experimental restore from fastboot; read docs carefully to understand capabilities/limitations
- 3rd party backup tool offers best option to protect against personal data loss
- FireOS can be restored via stock recovery; be sure to use 5.1.2 bin; anything lower will brick device

OK cool thanks a lot, it's all making much more sense now, it a bit daunting at first as all my flashing experience is through TWRP which is much easier While I'm picking your brain though, one more question. Is there a way to backup the android ROM? Or if I get into a boot loop I have to restore 5.1.2 and then reinstall android again?
I'm feeling much more comfortable doing this now though knowing even if I completely mess up the rooting or installing android I can just restore the 5.1.2 firmware. For £50 this thing is a steal.

Answered this in previous post.
Mine just showed up yesterday. 5.0.1.

Identifying my Fire.

Ok, I recently bought a Fire to experiment with. I want to strip out the BS, and use it as a tablet for my kids.
I've got it downgraded to 5.3.1 and rooted, I find their kid mode intriguing, but it doesnt let me use google play apps. Fail.
So, I figured Cyanogen or Lineageos would be a better move. Or honestly any rom that will give me full android. In my digging, i've found lots of howtos, but I can't be certain that they apply to my tablet. As with most android devices, all of them are referred to as their model name, not the branded name.
I can say that in the device info, fireos refers to this tablet as a "fire 5th gen". So what model does that make it? The last thing I want to do is try to flash a rom, and undo all the progress I've made.
Any suggestions on a clean stable android rom for this device are also welcome.
Thanks!
if you look here:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/help/id=201263780
The device labelled "Fire (5th Generation)" is the device I have. That doesnt help much though.
Some more googling has landed me here.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/index-amazon-fire-2015-t3210485
I think I have the answers I need.
Thanks for reading.
Also if rooted, download RootChecker (I have it). It will display some hardware and software information you otherwise wouldn't know. For example...I had no idea my Droid Razr M is also called a Scorpion Mini.
EDIT: CPU Z is also a nice little tool.
If you're rooted, use the 5th Gen supertool to install FlashFire, and then use that to install the Fire Nexus ROM. You won't regret it.

hello all!!
i am new to the forums, but i have been looking around for a while to figure out how to root and rom my Amazon Fire 7 (5th generation; KFFOWI). i havent used it in a while and i just loaded it up and now it has an update to Fire OS 5.6.2.0. is there any root for this device? and if so, has anyone found a way to custom recovery the device or unlock the bootloader? if there is no way, i am quite interested in the method used on LG's devices on if that would work to get a custom recovery on here. we all know about how most of LG's devices has a locked bootloader and the only way to get the custom recovery on specific LG devices was with a Bumped version of TWRP. if there is any way to test and work on it for the Fire 5th generation the same way it has been done on an LG G3, it might work out in the long run for this device. yes, root may have to be achieved still. but if someone can work on a ROM dump and try to find a loophole or a backdoor the hard way, we might be able to achieve root. i personally haven't learned android SDK let alone android kitchen, but i have a lot of experience in rooting and romming devices. my device is basically useless to me as i have a macbook and another android mobile device (LG Stylo 4 *still trying to find root for that device as well*), so if anybody tries these methods and can at least bring this device back to speed, we might be able to get more development for this device and probably can get Nougat or even Oreo on this device. you'll never know unless we try to put forth the effort to getting this device resurrected and rid of this FireOS plague!
Thanks!
