Hello world!
I like the fact that this device will be "waterproof", but a question that's popped up in my head recently is whether or not that applies when using wired headphones too. For example, say you're standing in the middle of the monsoon rains listening to music. Will the headphone "socket" be isolated well enough that the use of headphones is rendered safe & sound, or will we have to use Bluetooth for that purpose?
Hope I get my point across, as I don't really know how to ask this in a decent fashion. :victory:

Good question! But I don't know the answer maybe mail Sony

Unless the bundled headphones are water proof, I wouldn't do that. I think the headphone jack should go so easily, the headphone itself will be ruined.
Once I was washing hands while I was listening to music, and I touched the cable and it went right on the running water. The right ear stopped working. Luckily I was at home and used the hair dryer on the headphone. It isn't still that good (left ear is louder and play more frequencies), but it have to last until I get new headphones.

No, opening the port flap to the headphone jack invalidates the water resistance. As it's been said before, your headphones probably wouldn't survive much water either.

Xperia Z may be a advertised water resistant phone but when any of it's port covers are open it's the most prone to stationary water.
If you plug in your headphones indoors than it'll be ok , just don't do this under the rain

it is risky
i think it will not be "waterproof" any more,
it will be at most "water resistant"
sony xperia z handset's various ports, including the one for its headphones, all feature protective plastic covers that must be unclipped before they can be accessed. - so dont even try ur phone with headset in rain, rather attending a calls and reading messages with ports closed.
source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencet...-CES-2013-The-phone-use-bath-drop-toilet.html
So, the general guess is that it:
loses its waterproofness if I plug in the headphones mid-rain?
...and...
is water-resistant as long as I plug in the headphones when it's not raining?*
* Read: meaning that it won't take damage from getting a drop or two onto the output jack when something is connected
Mail sony and who knows you might even get an interesting reply from them - and can share it to earn brief fame among tech blogs
But u still can buy Sony's waterproof headphones, which cost £60 and go on sale next month
And take a shower safely while listening some music

i think you guys are confused about waterproof and water resistance.
heres an article http://boyslife.org/outdoors/askgearguy/9135/waterproof-or-water-resistant/
mainly the xperia z is not a gadget where you could operate under water. thats why there are videos out there of xperia z when you pour water on it the screen starts to act up as if someone is pressing the buttons.
taking a phone to operate under water is a whole new level. there is a reason why sony states 1meter under water for maximum 30 mins. IP57 certified - dust and water resistant. technically speaking, its something for like when you accidentally dropped your phone into a bucket of water and quickly pick it up or talk under the rain should be fine since the screen is off when youre in a phone call.
A lot of ‘waterproof’ electronics are IPX7, which means that they will be OK if you accidentally drop them in a stream and get them out immediately.

from the site
if the 35mm jack hole is water proof then theres no point for sony to design a cover on top of it.
haha would it work if sound was coming out of the speakers instead? haha...
underwater that is...

Any specific reason for it doing so? I've read that it has something to do with it being capacitive, but not completely sure what that actually means in this context.

This is generally the case with all capacitive touchscreens.
Capacitive touch screens work by using a thin grid of conductive materials on the screen to sense touches from conductive materials, like your finger. Water, obviously being highly conductive, messes it up quite badly.
This is why you generally can't use any capacitive touchscreen when it's wet; even a drop will usually make the screen freak out and sense touches that aren't being made.
I heard that the XZ has some tech that helps it sense fingers over drops of water (ie, just taken out of water), but it's probably not smart enough to handle being completely submerged. That would be my guess.

Completely right.
Over all taking pictures under water will be great option with this phone,
But I'm interested what if water finds a way into the device will the guaranty be void then?

Probably, yes, as you'd have to prove the you had put on all the lids and things like that.
why there's no one think this way!!
get a bluetooth waterproof headset and you can listening your music under the rain (even without using umbrella)..
How is the voice quality on your Gear?
I carry my phone (Note 3) in my front watch pocket, on my stand next to me, or in my mobile mount. This keeps the phone within 3 feet of the watch. Sometimes I can hear perfectly, but sometimes the audio breaks up so bad I need to quickly grab my phone and press the Headset button to disable the Gear's audio so I can use the phone.
It's random, almost 50/50. Is this a common or uncommon issue?

I've not had any issues with the phone on the Gear. When I ask most folks say I sound good.
I have had some choppy audio from SVoice, figured it was bluetooth interference.

People I talk to say it sounds fine when I talk to them, but when they talk to me, half the time it's broken up. I am assuming bluetooth issues.
Same here. Especially walking in downtown when it's noisy and windy outside, I have a hard time hearing the person talking on my watch so I have to hold my wrist to my ear, it's awkward and silly.

With respect, I think your expectations are very unrealistic and that's an understatement. Professional TV broadcasting outside microphones can cost tens of thousands of euros. Sound recorders are professional people who specialise in just sound yet even then there is no guarantee that the weather will behave. See the news on TV with an outside broadcast in poor weather and what do you hear?
Of course you will look silly when holding your watch up to your face to speak in to it, further more if the volume was higher are you sure you desire to share your conversation with the general public while walking down the high street?
I am hard to please yet even I realise the limitations of the device. What exactly where you expecting?
The volume on my gear is superb as is the quality of the speaker and microphone.
I have concerns about the gear but this is certainly not one of them.
Regards.

When I first got my Note (1) all the reviewers made comments about how stupid someone would look taking on such a big device. I never got that... phones were big before they were small, it's just an issue of what people become accustomed to. It immediately became very normal to me, and when I see people with much smaller phones they seem like toys. Holding your wrist up to your ear isn't that much different than holding a phone up to your ear. The only difference is, if someone pays attention they will see there is no phone in your hand. As wearable devices become more common, people will get used to it. I think putting the speaker on the clasp was a good idea, it does allow you to hold it up next to your ear in noisy environments in a much more natural way than if you were trying to hold the face of the watch up to your ear. I personally couldn't care less how silly someone thinks it might look, that's really more their issue of not being able to quickly adapt as technology changes.
My audio issues are not weather or distance related. It just seems like the audio I hear from the Gear is often choppy or has lag or stutter.
Is there any modification we can make that will allow the top speaker to work with music and videos aswell?

Doubtful. It's not a loudspeaker. If a simple mod would turn it into one, surely Motorola just would have made it that way from the start.
It's not a speaker. It's just a grille covering the ear piece to give the phone symmetry.
The speaker is really loud anyway, much better than the Nexus 5.
Thanks for the replies guys, the speaker is amazing but just wished that this phone could have stereo sound. I just can't believe that the 2nd gen moto g does and this doesn't. Don't know if it's just me but I can really notice hearing audio more from one ear while watching things or playing games.

Hello,
If you have an issue with the original headphones, i.e. low sound
Hers is a tip
Just remove the metal cover the sound will be great, better than vaiper4android!
Look at the picture
I dont think that the metalcover makes such a big difference. Generally the Huawei-headphones suck.
Even with the Cover removed, the Sound is still bad. (I tried this, because I dont use them at all so I dont give a f*** about them )
Greetings from Germany.

Well, your were just dirty. The metal cover doesn't make the headphones quieter. It acts as a dirt filter. Yours was so dirty that the dirt made the sound quite. Now, the dirt and dust can get right into your headsets, which will not only make them a lot quieter over time, it can also destroy them. You basically just damaged one of the most important parts of your headphones.
Clean your ears more frequently.

I didn't insult you directly. The last sentence was maybe to much and I want to apologize for that. I said dirt, this can be everything. Could be sand, dust, whatever.

Hey all, It's a strange situation, but I just noticed that my phone rattles... By saying that I mean there is sound of some loose component from the inside while gently moving/shaking the phone.
Probably it wasn't the case since day 1 because I would notice it earlier during phone call or something.
Important facts:
1. I did not drop my phone (it's less than two weeks in my hands)
2. The noise do not come from buttons / lenses
3. It looks like everything is working, but this sound isn't optimistic.
There is a link for short video:

Should I be worried? I never had such situation with any phone.

That's your camera rattling. It happens in almost all phones with optically stabilized cameras. Mine has it too. Don't worry, it's normal.

Shake, rattle and roll... seems oddly appropriate for a camera
Canon L lens make all kinds of cool little sounds. It's when they stop that you have to be concerned...
Thanks for answers, I feel kinda stupid I even tried to "shake" S20+ and some sound is also present (much quieter). Anyways I'll watch football game today with my friend which have S21U too, he won't stop me to shake his unit I have to be sure!
