Google Duo Available Now - Nexus 6P Themes and Apps

Google Duo has gone live on the Play Store. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.tachyon
What are your thoughts?

It's clear! I really like it so far

Just to clarify. This only seems to work for numbers in the USA. Still have to wait I'd you live somewhere else. Google stated that everything should be live in the next couple of days.

It's a staged roll out.
It's not available in most areas - specifically Canada here.. still is "Pre-Register" for me.
Be patient, it will be available soon for everyone, however for those who aren't patient: APK Mirror
You want the ARM64 NoDPI variant when it's available. Some users have reported that the 560-640 DPI one works best, but personally I'd wait.

worked flawless talking to a iphone user, super clear and smooth so far... only thing i wish u didnt need the number so i could totally abandon hangouts since i video chat wit the kids thru that but otherwise flawless

Duo's live in Germany. I just tried it between my 6p and my wife's iPhone 6S Plus. Everything is nice and clear. The interface is super simple too, just the way I like it.

Love it.. Simple to use i love the knock knock feature..
Now if Allo would come out.

I wonder when allo will release

So i noticed that this works really well if you have a really good connection. when the connection is even a little shaky the video will cut out completely. audio will still work though.

finally a decent scrabble app

just thought i'd share this, it's basically words with friends but strictly for android
its really nice when it works, but the servers have been messing up recently
http://mobiputing.com/2010/08/wordfeud-free-scrabble-or-words-with-friends-clone-for-android/
Seconded, I picked this up a few days ago. Although the servers are a bit troublesome right now, when they get that all sorted out the app itself is very well done, the UI seems quite polished. My only complaint is the ads after each turn can be somewhat intrusive, but otherwise I definitely recommend this to scrabble fans.
first froyo, now this... i officially love my android so much more
this will help me kill plenty of time at work. thanks!
wordwise is another scrabble like game for the android
I have been using word wise (WW) for a while since it has been the only option. A recent update really polished up the UI. I downloaded this and will try it out, I'm hoping it is at least AS good as WW because I don't really like how many permissions WW has access to.
only annoying thing so far are the ads holy crap.
I have been using word wise as well but haven't stopped playing word feud since i got it

Nice using them both now and just suggested my recent iphone to droid friend to do the same.

those ads are AWFUL
Seeing that you can skip them after one second of viewing... I'm okay with that.

Google Project Glass will change your lifeā€¦. Just say what you want

For a full video click on pic
I would love them if they would work like they do in the video and definitely buy them, sadly i dont think they will work at all as they do in the video. No way its gonna be that fast.
I still don't like voice interfaces, no matter if it's called Siri or Glass.
Hmmm perfect to go with their driverless cars so people don't get run over
there's still a road to walk in the voice recognition tech yet

Yep, siri doesn't work good if you have accent that siri doesn't like lol
I'm pretty sure it would change my life. Imagine all the poles you will run into.
what we are waiting for!
If, in the release, it have all the features bugless from the video, I will buy one, even if I have to sell a organ on the black market

and, it seems great to me. Its like the future is here but are you ready for it? - that's what the people are asking.

Slow screen rotation

Hi everyone
Lucky enough to get my nexus from currys last night before they'd made it properly onto the shop floor loving it so far but for one issue and that is REALLY slow rotation of screen in apps... chrome tapatalk YouTube everything takes forever as if it hasn't realised its been tipped over... a very heavy flick seems to help it along but that's really not good enough and I look a bit mental!
I tested with an accelerometer test app and all axes seem to register through all range of motion and even move v slowly so seems to me hardware fine and software bug? I read a Google post that there was an issue on nexus phones in December... anyone experienced it with the 7
Thanks

I guess it makes me feel better to know that I'm not the one having this problem. I wish instead neither of us were though!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29016781&postcount=434
I'm going to to try and flash a stock image tonight in hopes that it isn't the hardware. I also downloaded an app from the market that tests the sensors, and everything appeared fine there. If flashing back to stock doesn't fix it, I guess I'll be forced to do another exchange.....

Google Voice Search (Siri-clone) is overrated.

After watching several videos of it battling the Siri of iOS while I was awaiting my tablet, I was hyped about using this feature.
Now that I have had my tablet for almost almost a week now, it was overhyped and the accuracy was overblown in those videos on YouTube.
I know it's not my accent, since it gets my questions correctly, it just doesn't answer 'em.
I tried simple stuff too, like requesting for the current score of USA vs Korea in volleyball (when the game was going on), requesting for specific train times, requesting to see my calendar, asking it to see if I was busy on a certain day and time, and it just Google'd these questions, not telling me the answers (especially the last one; it Google'd "Am I busy at 4pm on this coming Monday?" instead of showing my calendar).
Hell even the simplest things like "show me my calendar" has it Googling that, and not actually showing me my calendar.
I've only ever successfully gotten it to tell me the weather, the time, set alarm, and tell me when the Olympics 2012 ends.
If Google Voice Search (or w/e they call it) is this bad, I wonder how bad Siri is, seeing how in those videos, Google beat Siri all the time.
Had a guy at work playing around with Siri, not very impressing, certainly nothing like the staged commercials. Technology is not there yet. I think that Dragon has a better voice recognition ability, (part of Swype Beta), but I have not played with their "Dragon Go" yet on my tablet. Didn't care for it much on my phone.

Siri answers a lot more of those types of questions, although it is definitely slower as the videos point out. Overall though, I rarely ask those questions anyways. I generally only ask about sports scores and weather or conversions, and a few more things.
I think they are both good at different things. Most of the YouTube videos I've seen seem to show of Google Nows speed a bit much. Hopefully what Google Now lacks.. now, it will make up for in later updates, assuming they are not harassed by Apple too much more.
I'd also like to mention that Google Now is not in any way a clone or copy of Siri. Voice recognition and human-like feedback have been strived towards since even before the USS-Enterprises computer did it in early Star-Trek Apple, or anyone recently claiming it was 'their idea' should be shot in the foot.
Didn't Google have to 'dumb' down their voice app because of the lawsuit Apple had against the Galaxy Nexus?

Is does work alot better than siri in alot of ways, then again this stuff was available since froyo. I believe Google said all those features are coming back

They removed local search (i.e., showing apps and contacts, etc., along with off-device search) from ALL on-device search, because it was the integrated search functionality specifically that was the patent that the judge found most likely to be upheld. Not related directly to voice.
But atleast Google now is better then S voice lol, I removed it from my G note.... For some reason it never worked for me : /
I'm getting "network error. Please try again" on my S3

I think it's pretty good, it's very accurate for me even in noisy environments.
It's just not very complex in it's abilities, which I agree with a member above is due to it being young technology rather than overrated per say.
As it's part of my phone and I use it more, I still find Siri far more frustrating and inaccurate. Oddly a series of jailbreaks make it far more capable and I'm wondering if we'll ever see similar hacking on Android.
Somewhat related, I'm just glad Google allows for offline dictation as there's nothing more annoying than a voice assistant telling you it's unavailable because you're in bad service area.

Well, if not for the insanity that is Apple, it would have much more capabilities, but I find it pretty easy to use, accurate, and despite local search, pretty good.
Lolz, why people always believe that Apple make new things every time and now calling this Google now a siri clone.
Having used both siri and Google now, I think both are different and have different strength points and Google now doing more work than siri. Siri is more vocal though.
People think S voice is bad but I have found it more useful than siri and it can do device functions as well which siri can't.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Google now isn't a siri clone and wasn't created to be one. Although I will admit that Google now works a lot better on my galaxy nexus, Google Now is pretty amazing. I love when I'm out somewhere that it tells me how much traffic I will have on my way home and will give me better directions.

As somebody already said, the voice recognition is accurate but it just doesn't give you 'local' results. I tried to get it to display a book I have in Play Books or music in Play Music but it wouldn't open those apps. I use SpeakToIt Assistant, which seems to be much better at playing your music, reading calendar, sending SMS's (on my Sensation), etc.
I think it runs better actually... Tried it out next to an iPhone 4s and asked them both the questions at the same time and my Gnex blew it out of the water

The OP complains mostly about calendar integration...which I agree ought to be included. It will, however, schedule reminders using alarms. I hope this isn't yet another patent issue....especially since voice commands have been in the works for years on multiple platforms. Heck, back in the 80s I had my Amiga executing various commands by voice...even telling me the time using Majel Roddenberry's voice after a 'computer. Time please' command. I programmed a bunch of voice commands using AREXX.
I find the voice feature very useful. On my galaxy nexus I asked it to call home depot and it called the nearest store and offered navigation and eta. It really makes for the ultimate hands free navigaion/calling system. It responds very quickly as well.
I would like it to SAY more. And I would pay good money if it sounded like Majel Roddenberry.

I know that for people in the UK you have to tick the box for it to search from Google.com opposed to co.uk, otherwise it wont bring up pictures and certain cards (as answers to questions).
Also, change the language to english (US) to get the cute female voice opposed to our British male, ha.
But overall, nothing like the Youtube video where the guy asks 74 odd questions on Google Now. When i try, it just searches the same question...

Has anyone received the Google Assistant update yet?

I'm currently running Pure Nexus and like many/most custom roms it has GA enabled but the other 2 phones in my house are stock Nexus 6P's and neither have received the update yet. One I signed up for the beta program and it downloaded and installed the 7.1.2 beta but no GA. Then I read today that it'll be a Google Play Services update that enables GA across MM/Nougat devices so I updated Play Services to the latest beta and still no GA. So, what do you know, what do you hear?? My wife and son really want GA but want to stay stock. Their tired of me messing with their phones.
Running stock, no root. Latest GPS and Google App and nothing

I clean flashes the other day after thinking about switching Roms... And for the first time I did not have to revert the build.prop line to train the assistant...

Thanks for the reply. Kind of strange that a weekend ago Google announced it wound start hitting capable phone starting last week in the US first yet it seems no one has received the update.
I'm on a Nexus 6P, never rooted, in the Beta program with 7.1.2. I'm also in the Google Play Services beta program. I have installed the Pixel Launcher from APK but otherwise stock. So far no Assistant. Live in the US.
Still no assistant here either. Are we missing something, or has Google not actually released the update like they said they would? I don't know of anyone that has actually received it to this point.
It's a server side switch and in typical Google form, they are turning it on very slowly. These trickle rollouts of new features are ridiculous. Either it's ready for release or it's not. If it is, release it to everyone. If it's not, then don't announce anything until it's ready.

I have been searching for anyone who has had it turned on. I follow a FB forum as well where every little update usually gets posted. Nothing there yet either. Hearing of others getting it turned on would at least be encouraging.

Thats what I was thinking. A week ago the tech sites were a buzz with "Google Assistant coming to most 6.0+ phones this week". Then nothing. All week. I'm still wondering a full week later why the tech sites are almost silent and no one is asking "Ok Google, what gives".

Someone in the FB group received Assistant about an hour after installing the latest Google App beta APK. I just tried it. Probably a coincidence, but at least someone has reported getting Assistant.
Isn't this linked to the google play services apk? If someone gets it, wouldn't posting the apk give it to all of us?

You have to have the correct Play Services but Google still has to "turn it on" on their end. That seems to be what is taking so long. As long as your Play Services are up to date you should be good. I entered the beta program for that as well. Still no Assistant though.
Mine was activated yesterday, right around the time I updated to the 7.1.1 March security patch. Don't know if there's a direct relation though.
I just got it today, I had everything updated and it showed up on its own.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Looks like we're very slowly but surely on our way. Still no GA love for the 2 stock 6P's in my house yet.
Edit: P.S. I didn't start this thread to complain, I was just wondering if I was the only one not receiving the GA update. I can only imagine what a mind blowing amount of mega giga google flops of computing power it must take for what must be thousands (if not tens of thousands) of questions per second via voice, interpret it, then send the answer back. All within a second or 2. For the thousands or tens or thousands of users asking/interacting at the same time. Mind boggling. It's probably a very slow rollout to be able to keep up and ramp up for the onslaught until they get a full picture of what the new computing/server farm needs will be.
My Nexus 6 has it, my wife's 6p does not.

Just got it guys. Running LOs, Google app ver. 6.13.25.21, and Google Play Services ver. 10.2.99, location Kosovo. It feels great not to do so many workarounds just to have it
East coast rolled out 32GB.
Still Waiting as well
I am still waiting as well. February 5 Security Patch, Google(Beta) 6.14.14.21.arm and Play Services 10.2.98.
Like so many others I signed up for Play Services Beta, but unlike the others I never got a bump up (update), and Still have not received the March Security Update.
But I swear if I don't side load most things from Google I am the last to get them.
