I haven't tried using layers for a very long time now, last I checked it was still RRO layers manager by BiySyko development.

The layer.apk's are in 'system/vendor/overlay'.
A layer manager isn't necessary; you can copy your layers manually with a rootexplorer.
The procedure is simple. Download layers and extract the layer.apk's to a directory.
Select the layer.apk's you want to use and copy the layers to system/vendor/overlay and reboot.
Yes, use Substratum instead of Layers Manager. Works the same, but you'll have to uninstall your current layers then install the Substratum versions. Works better and doesn't require reboots even though I still do as a precaution.

You guys make it difficult.
Why use other versions. Just backup the layers from 'system/vendor/overlay' and restore the layer-directory with a rootexplorer.
Sorry for the stupid noob question, but how do you use this app? I downloaded it from the play store, downloaded some themes, ace tried to apply it. I know i need something called Masquerade, but i can't seem to find that anywhere to download. Thanks for the help!

Masquerade is supposed to be included with Substratum. Substratum settings has an option that checks for the presence of Masquerade. If you don't get any results from that check, then something on your device blocked the install.
Are you rooted?

Masquerade unfortunately needs something called OMS support. It must be somehow enabled in the rom but I also dont know how to do that. There is one rom for sure which supports OMS, hence Masquerade called nutty rom. If there is support for Masquerade when you start the app, it is asking for root for substartum, and after that root access for Masquerade. After i uninstalled nutty rom and installed stock android 7 which apperatnly doesnt have OMS enabled by default, when I start the app it doesnt ask for root for Masquerade, only for substratum and can only use it as the old layers app, meaning each time you have to reboot. With Masquerade you dont have to reboot, if you change theme, it does it on the fly. Without Masquerade support you still have to reboot, and also cant change font and some other stuffs I dont know about.

This is basically a tutorial for how to use Winterboard app. I am not a developer, but I thought it would be gr8 to share this app with you.
XDA Portal article: http://www.xda-developers.com/android/cydia-substrate-released-by-saurik-for-android/
With this you can install and use themes made for CyanogenMod OS on any rooted Android phone with ease.
Works perfectly without any hassles
Requirements
Rooted phone. (Google if you haven't)
WinterBoard: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.saurik.winterboard
Cydia Substrate: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.saurik.substrate
Installation
1. Install both the apps.
2. Run Substrate app.
3. Tap on "Link Substrate Files"
4. Grant Superuser permissions.
5. After linking tap on "Restart System (Soft)
6. You phone will reboot.
7. After it again open Substrate and tap "Restart System (Soft)
8. Install desired themes for Play Store.
9. Open WinterBoard.
10. Tap on the theme icons which you want to enable.
11. You can prioritize them by moving them up using check box.
12. After that tap on "Restart Zygote"

Features
No need to install CyanogenMod custom ROM.
Can use multiple themes at a time.
After the setup is done the applying theme process is quick.
Note
I only tested this thing on Jelly Bean device and like 2 years back, haven't tested afterwards. Dev stopped development while back. Also only CM10 theme.
Alternatively I would suggest HK Theme Manager.
does this support new CyanogenMod theme engine themes? ?

I don't know the answer of this but what I can tell you is, I tried this and it worked successfully with the themes I installed.
Neat
I was looking for a replacement themer app for certain roms that do not use the CM themer cause I cant seem to get it ported or aligned right and their is no forums that teach you how. I just wish I did not have to restart the phone to install the theme if I could just somehow figure it to just do the systemUI that would be much more tasteful....Thanks :good:

I have tried the xposed modules I am familiar with but I haven't found a way to get the date in the status bar like Wanam does for Touchwiz. Coming from the Samsung S4, I got used to having it there for quick glance. Any one know of a setting or module I might be missing that could achieve this?
I should also note that the apps in the Play store are cheesy looking. I want something that matches the fonts of the phone and doesn't create an entry in the pull-down notification either.
Use a custom rom such as Mahdi and you can have this feature.

I would simply test it out and if it does not work for you simply delete it. But custom rom is the way to go. Also try SlimKat since OPO asked them personally to create a rom for there phone

I ended up trying it and it works for what I needed. Thank you both. I am still going to look into one of the custom ROMs. I just get tired of keeping up with the updates since there is no OTA (except for PA I believe).
For the functionality, I'm not sure, I just read various things about conflicts between CM and xposed/gravitybox tweaks.

Slim has a OTA and to be honest if it is running right why do you need to update. Updating is not mandatory but so many feel like if they dont have the latest they are going to burst....

If you want to do this yourselves.
1st Download and install xposed framework installer to your phone (root needed)
Get it here
Check framework is the latest in framework
.Then in download section of xposed framework search for resflux and install
Or get it here
Then in modules section of xposed enable resflux and reboot
Open reflux and select laboratory
Then click the app you want nodded
Then simply use the up to select and change texts. Colours back rounds etc.
Then to apply . Press back and reboot
Use only png images for back rounds
IL give a more detailed guide when I get to my pc.
Has anyone tried this yet? I just tried and i changed colors of alot of things in gear manager on phone and rebooged has in still phone this same. When i went back into theming app the colors where still changed to what i changed them to but in gear manager they didnt change.I have it checked in exposed so that isnt the problem.Do you need to clear cache of gear manager or whatever app your trying to theme? It seems like a good app if it works rite.
So i just looked on the developers page and it was confirmed working on a few devices and alot of stock roms.I have galaxy s4 with hyperdrive rom so maybe it doesnt work on my phone.

Now that google has patched systemless root, are there any more benefits to it compared to the regular root?

It's currently the only method to root stock rom and kernel. And leaving /system read only and untouched seems to be marshmallow's flavor if you will.
I have been on systemless for awhile now so perhaps it has changed but dont you need a modified boot image to avoid the corrupt phone message?

few possiblilities:
1. You haven't received the rollout for the new safetynet api
2. Your payment wasn't checked with safetynet this time.
3. You lucky booger.
I was going to say, they may not have "updated" android pay yet. I wonder if you don't update how that will work. Tbh, the systemless root does seem pretty moot at this point unless you love OTAs.
It is gonna get to the point that people will have to pick either root/custom roms or using things like android pay. Not a big deal personally as all mobile payments are blocked in every store here
