Selecting an Android Auto Head Unit - Android Auto General

I have been searching online everywhere and cannot find any good sites or tables that compare Android Auto units. I don't even know where to begin when selecting a unit. Can anyone help me? I have no idea where to begin. Thanks in advance!

I'm in the same boat I'm trying to find one for my sons car & have no clue which brand or mtcb/c/d to get..
I've been talking with someone from AVIN & they said the Avant 3 will be released in the near future but with a $799 US price tag....NO thanks
I'm looking for one that already has 2gb ram & 32gb internal storage I've only seen a couple of these but since the new roms have been released is there even a point in getting them..?
I've been banging my head for a few weeks now & need help deciding..
I have a guy on ebay that'll sell me a 7" Pumpkin KD-C0250 with kitkat for $220 US is this a good deal..?
Thanks in advance ! This site is awesome so much better than joying support..LOL
EDIT: The models I like has no dvd has the buttons on the front left side with SD & GPS slots
MUST pair with iPhone 5/6

Cid, I think we are talking about two different types of units. I think you're talking about straight Android head units, what I am looking at are Android Auto compatible units. Like these Pioneer units, for example: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/androidauto/

Kenwood DNX893S and android auto

This one is driving me nuts. The advertising for this unit shows an icon page. Messages, phone etc. That only seems to be for Carplay with the iphone. When I connect to the unit with the usb, i can't look at or receive any texts that are on my phone at the time I connect. There is no home page with the icons that show my phone aps. It won't even show the apps it's supposed to work with on Android. It seems that you can with the Apple aps. Am I doing anything wrong? It looks like Android auto was an after thought to sell more of these Kenwood units. I'm having issues navigating thru this unit. I use Android music but can't get this thing to default to my playlists. Do I have to buy an iphone just to use the potential of this $1700.00 mistake?
Wow now i am really glad i passed on this. After being burnt with 990hd i was really down on Kenwood. Went with a joying Chinese android unit and LOVE IT

First, the unit only retails at $1299.
Second, try running a stock rom then complain about it. Its the custom rom that breaks Andoid auto and bluetooth.
Third, apps NOT installed from play store will not show up on the andoid auto screen.
Learn how to use the info from this page to your advantage. when you follow it, you will be able to get spotify, pandora etc on your AA screen

990hd was such a turd. the new 893s is running on with a dual core processor, much faster and now is linux based vs before was android 2.3. it will run circles around your andoid unit from china. I have had them all since the 990/991/992/ DNN series, DNX 690/691/692 and dnx890/891/892 and now my current 893s. 893s is such a great unit compared to the rest of them out there

I wouldn't waste too much time, he's only made 2 posts and they're both to complain about it because he didn't do his research first.

Yours is not the only dollar in the world.
$1299 US --> $1740 CAD / $1790 AUD

Eh...
1) Android *is* Linux.
2) Dual core ARM... REALLY??? You think a DUAL CORE ARM is going to "run circles" around a QUAD CORE INTEL? While it is certainly an improvement over their previous SINGLE core TURDSLUGS, twice nothing is still nothing.
3) You've HAD THEM ALL.... means that ALL of them have been inadequate. LOL, you're doing a bad job of marketing for them.
Also from Kenwood literature... "Dual Core Processor w/ Faster Start-Up Time: The Kenwood navigation receiver utilizes a Linux based system and dual core processor for faster operating speeds and enhanced stability. The unit has start-up time of approximately 17.7 seconds from OFF to the last source selected or navigation map screen."
*** YOU SERIOUSLY THINK THAT WAITING NEARLY 20 SECONDS TWIDDLING YOUR THUMBS IS FAST?
I'll take my Joying **ZERO** seconds startup ANY DAY over that. Yep, I sit in my car, turn the key, wait precisely ZERO seconds and have Google Maps up, tap in the input field and START TYPING AN ADDRESS. By the time you finish waiting, I've already backed out my driveway and am on my way up the street!
I've had kenwood too. BOY was it ever nice to get that junk out of my car.
Oh one more thing, since you are very aggressively attacking "your andoid unit from china", your kenwood is made in MALAYSIA. Yeah, that is SO MUCH BETTER than 'Made in China'. LOL

It's the only dollar that matters.
Everyone else compares theirs to this one.
Good luck with your China joy.

You speak like a typical american -- thinking that you are the center of the universe.
NOBODY cares about US dollars any more.
People talk about THEIR OWN dollars.
Luck? Not needed.
I think I know what your problem is: you spent sooooo much money on those pieces of junk that you're trying to tell yourself that they're somehow better than something you can buy for 1/3rd of the price. Its called SHAME and EMBARRASSMENT. I pity you.
But like I said... I've already owned kenwood products, so there is NOTHING you can do to convince me about how good you want me to believe that it is.... I KNOW BETTER.

Yep, shame and embarrassment.
while I dont agree with the arguing, I would have to say the new Joyings are pretty fast. I had the older MTCD with 1GB of RAM and it was brutally slow.
However the new 2GB of RAM and Intel processor units are smooth, pretty quick, and I would say hard to beat.
Edit to add- I don't want to derail this thread, I was looking at the DNX893S pretty heavy. But it is crazy expensive, however it does look cool
You can't get the same sound out of China no name brands. There good for the money, but with all audio out , there is a big price increases to get the best sound. If you just want options, go with the cheaper one's . You can spend $ 10 000 to $ 15 000 on speakers if you want the best, but $ 500 are good to
Yes but for the money you save you buy amps and kick @SS speakers and you are there. Kenwood is just awful. Bad support and way behind the times.

Android head unit

Hello everyone,
I want to buy an 2din Android head unit as christmas present. I had checked some ebay offers, but I'am totaly confused about all the units which are available on the market. Maybe someone can help me out to find the right one? A few sugestions would be nice :good:
It should support:
Android auto
GPS navigation
DVD support
rear USB plug
updateable to newer android versions
price max. $160
How about this one?
ebay item no.: 162236269887 (sorry, can't post an external direct link as a new member on xda)
Thank u guys a lot for ur help
sry for my bad english
greetings
Michael
no sugestions which one is recommendable?:crying:
Well... I recommend NOT THAT UNIT.
Unfortunately, if you want something that isn't complete garbage, you're going to be spending a bit more than your target price.
1) NONE of the aftermarket chinese Android head units will support Android Auto, but *some* will be able to run an open source re-implementation of Android Auto called "Headunit for Android Auto" -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/paid-software/android-4-1-headunit-android-auto-t3125252
2) Thing about running "Headunit for Android Auto", is that it requires certain hardware video codecs to be available, which I *understand* to mean that ONLY the head units running INTEL SoFIA SoC will have. In other words, just to get off the ground with your requirements, you will have to aim your sights at the *BEST* chinese head units.
3) For a moderate price bump ($40), I suggest that you narrow your focus to the ones that ship with 2GB of RAM. For example, any of these: https://www.carjoying.com/new-android-car-radio/quad-core-2-din-android-car-audio.html -- you will note that you will be looking at a price of around $300 US.
If you want paid for real Android Auto support that is guaranteed to work consistently, then you need to set your sights on the more mainstream brands of head units that are carried by big box stores. For example, Pioneer, Kenwood, etc. Of course with those, you'll be looking at a very significant price jump, even for their LOWEST END models.
definitely get a unit with 2GB of RAM

Ordered Sony XAV-AX100

i currently have a Joying in my Jeep, but it quit working. I'm going to try to fix it, but i figured if I am going to have the dash apart, I should have a backup or something. So I picked up the Sony XAV-AX100 from Amazon. Going to put it in tomorrow.
It will be my first experience with true Android Auto. I have used the Android Auto app on my Joying head unit, but not an actual Android Auto unit. And my wife has an iPhone, so I'll try Car Play out too.
Nice. It would be great to get your feedback on the comparison of overall experience between having a Joying unit and Android Auto. Wish someone made one with a bigger screen.

it is out for delivery now, I hope to get it installed, but i think the screen will be the (potential) deal breaker.
I upgraded my joying from the Jeep specific to the Universal 8 inch, and I was contemplating getting a 10 inch. So going back to 6.4 inch will take some getting used to
I had perfect eyesight until about 3 years ago where I started to need readers. I swear about it every day. I'm not sure I can use a tiny screen in the car anymore...safely. Had you tried the Auto app on Joying at all for comparison?

I did try the Android Auto on the Joying, it was ok, but not great. Since the phone portion doesn't work.
I got the Sony:
https://youtu.be/j6MUgq6wfBc
I will have a more in-depth review up later, but I will eventually be going back to a Joying or a Seicane. If I had never had an Android head unit, the Sony would blow me away. Android Auto is nice, but after having full Android, it is hard to go back to the neutered version.
I also dont want to plug my phone in every time. However, the sound of the Sony is drastically better than my Joying. And this is coming from someone who was a big fan of their Joying, and thought it sounded great. The Sony just made the sound really come alive.
I will also say, Car Play is superior to Android Auto. That being said, I'll never have an iPhone, i greatly prefer Android, but as far as their in-car products go, Car Play is definitely better in my opinion

Comparing several different models, need some guidance so I don't buy the wrong one.

I'm wanting to put an android double-din head unit in my 2005 F350 but there's so much information, so many different models and variations, and not a lot of info about the models I've found. I don't want to end up buying a head unit that isn't reliable or doesn't have good XDA/root/ROM support.
My goal here is to have something that plays FM radio, has a decent GPS, would like DVD player, and most importantly handles my bluetooth Torque Pro well because monitoring temperatures on this vehicle is extremely important(powerstroke engine). I'm just going with universal double-din and buying a double-din radio install kit since this route appears to offer more radio options compared to shopping for vehicle-specific radios.
I'm honestly more confused after all my research the last two days and have no idea what to buy. So far I have the following models on my list...
Pumpkin 6.2" Android 6.0 32gb ROM 2gb RAM TDA7560 OctaCore FastBoot DVD- Model #CN10-02207B I can't seem to figure out exactly what CPU is in this one. It has the TDA7560 audio, plays DVDs, has front aux/usb/sd which makes using those ports much more convenient. Downside is it has physical buttons down the left side. Not a huge deal, and it seems to hit on all my other requirements so I could look past that. No idea on aftermarket/XDA support.
Xtrons 6.95" Android 7.1 2GB/16GB RK-PX3 64bit 4core DVD - Model #TA695P Can't figure out what audio chip/amp this one has and it's only a quad core so 'fast boot' isn't available. It is also the PX3 which, to my understanding, means it has better root/rom support on XDA? No idea on Xtrons support.
Xtrons 6.95" Android 6.0 2GB/32GB OctaCore FastBoot TDA7851 DVD - Model #TB697P Can't figure out what CPU this one has. Pretty much same requirements met as the Pumpkin, but face looks cleaner without those physical buttons. Has the better audio amp chip. No idea on aftermarket/XDA support or how Xtrons support is. So far this one is my favorite based on appearance and specs. Main downside so far is that USB/SD appear to be on the back of the unit or via cable plugged in to the back, so this hurts convenience a bit.
I'm not sure which of these models would be the best head unit for the money, or if any of them are known to have issues. Models are changing and updating so fast that it's hard to find info on them here on XDA. Anyone have any tips/advice for me? Would like to purchase one today since my current radio is no longer working.
Couldn't hold off on ordering any longer since I need one delivered by Tuesday.
Rolled the dice on the Pumpkin 6.2" Android 6.0 32gb ROM 2gb RAM TDA7560 OctaCore FastBoot DVD- Model #CN10-02207B since it and other Pumpkin models seem to have better reviews all around compared to the various Xtron octacore models.

Best Android Universal Headunit Money Can Buy?

Hi,
I'm looking for 9 inch LTE/4G enabled Universal Android Head unit. Been using several head units but almost all of them are fake China head unit (wrong Android details, wrong screen resolution, etc)
Any suggestion for the best head unit money can buy that can support Cam 360 and include DSP?
Thanks
you're in the wrong forum, Head up one and go to Android Head Units. Short answer they are all Chinese Head Units as no US company will make one apparently. Names like Joying, IDoing, Daisata, Teyes, seem to at least be truthful about the specs, if not the features. I'd head over and do some searching. Personally I just put a 9" IDoing with CanBus in my '18 WRX, it has some quirks, but generally does what was advertised and is "true" android 10 if someone cobbled together and limited and true 720p. As you will be reminded most of these units are all basically the same with only a couple true manufacturers and a lot of assemblers and resellers.
If you do some research of features you want and go in with moderate expectations(so far my expectations have been FAR exceeded).
