Ordered Sony XAV-AX100 - Android Auto General

i currently have a Joying in my Jeep, but it quit working. I'm going to try to fix it, but i figured if I am going to have the dash apart, I should have a backup or something. So I picked up the Sony XAV-AX100 from Amazon. Going to put it in tomorrow.
It will be my first experience with true Android Auto. I have used the Android Auto app on my Joying head unit, but not an actual Android Auto unit. And my wife has an iPhone, so I'll try Car Play out too.

Nice. It would be great to get your feedback on the comparison of overall experience between having a Joying unit and Android Auto. Wish someone made one with a bigger screen.

it is out for delivery now, I hope to get it installed, but i think the screen will be the (potential) deal breaker.
I upgraded my joying from the Jeep specific to the Universal 8 inch, and I was contemplating getting a 10 inch. So going back to 6.4 inch will take some getting used to

I had perfect eyesight until about 3 years ago where I started to need readers. I swear about it every day. I'm not sure I can use a tiny screen in the car anymore...safely. Had you tried the Auto app on Joying at all for comparison?

I did try the Android Auto on the Joying, it was ok, but not great. Since the phone portion doesn't work.

I got the Sony:
https://youtu.be/j6MUgq6wfBc
I will have a more in-depth review up later, but I will eventually be going back to a Joying or a Seicane. If I had never had an Android head unit, the Sony would blow me away. Android Auto is nice, but after having full Android, it is hard to go back to the neutered version.
I also dont want to plug my phone in every time. However, the sound of the Sony is drastically better than my Joying. And this is coming from someone who was a big fan of their Joying, and thought it sounded great. The Sony just made the sound really come alive.
I will also say, Car Play is superior to Android Auto. That being said, I'll never have an iPhone, i greatly prefer Android, but as far as their in-car products go, Car Play is definitely better in my opinion

So What do people think of the new Galaxy Player 5

It looks cool, nice screen, features.
1GHz processor, comes with 2.2, but ROM's will come out quick if the device becomes popular. Alright Camera, normal capacitive screen, nothing fancy.
But at 5" might be attractive to loads people.
So what do you think?
being a Samsung fan and all, i'll say it's a cheap shot at fighting apples itouch
Probably not enough to compete with iTouch in the music player market.
Samsung's usual mistake. Adding in too much
Putting in too many products at once makes consumers think that the company will not remain committed to the device and future updates might be reserved for newer devices which might ome out later.
Also, this, as it comes out while Kindle Fire came out, and the SGS2 came out for the US market, and with growing rumours about iPhone 5......... This probably was not the time to release a half-hearted attempt to beat out the iPod range.
What do you think?
A 5" phone with integrated hardware, (experia play like controls) alongside a HD display and a Tegra 2 processor would have been nice, or would it have pushed the price a bit too high to copete in the multimedia market?

I bought it and this thing is really nice!
My experience:
I had an ipod touch 2g, then an ipod touch 3g because the 2g stopped working after about a year at most. then my ipod touch 3g battery quit and I replaced it and then the device corrupted later on and i finally gave up on apple products because they are basically junk to me and never last...
So I looked around for a while for a good iPod touch alternative, and I eventually came across the Samsung galaxy 5.0 Player.
I looked over the features being very skeptical, and then I finally realized that this is what I want!
It does more than my iPdo touch, I have true GPS offline navigation with sygic, I have Gvoice texting and VoIP apps for free 2 way calling and texting over wifi.
The ear piece makes it nice because I can use it like a normal phone too!
and the best part is, all the features of android that are stock, are what I had to jailbreak my iPod touch to get close to.
The iPod touch is locked down and it feels like an idiot box.
This android feels like the smart box!
And yes the resolution could have been better for the screen size, but it IS VERY CLEAR already, and it seems better than my iPod touch 3g's screen resolution!
The Bluetooth is amassing too, no erroneous 10 dollar fee from apple to make it work a short while after I buy it...lol
It is basically for me, because of the google voice and gvoice VoIP and sygic apps, A WIFI ONLY CELL PHONE!
(YAY no data plans, no cell plans, no minutes overages, and its great for me because where I live has free wifi everywhere)
**Granted I still have my cheap dum phone for emergency calls because when your driving on the freeway to places, you do need simple calling and a few text messages avaliable, the GPS and offline maps is dome by my samsung!
A friend of mine got this when he bought a Samsung Smart TV so i've tested it a lot. I have the Galaxy Note, which is the Galaxy 5 on steroids so i compared them:
Performance:
- The Galaxy 5 is "fine" with the 1GHz, but it's pretty outdated, but it works.
Display:
- 800x480 resolution on a 5" screen. I'm sorry but it looks like ****. I can count the pixels, and the colors are washed out.
Build quality:
- Made of plastic like all the samsung devices, but it seems like Samsung has used a cheaper plastic on this one.
Conclusion: I would never ever buy this, but if i got it bundled with a Smart TV without a price increase i wouldn't protest. It's fine to use it as a remote for the TV, and that's about it.

alternate os for car indash monitor?

Hello everybody, majid here. Long time stalker since the HTC touch android port days, yet not much of a poster. Now normally i do my research for as long as it takes but it has been about 3 months now with no type of luck.
What I'm looking for is a little out of the ordinary for these forums here but this community really knows its stuff so i came to you in my time of need. But enough on the formalities let me get to my [miniscule] dilemma.
Now i bought this in dash flip out monitor and i like it a lot. Big 8.3" screen and all the nice bells and whistles i could ask for. Except for the ugly os. It's a very low definition watered down iOS lookalike. And is incredibly ugly to me. I'm looking (and hoping and praying) that somebody here has this particular unit and conjured up a nicer looking ui.
My device is the power acoustik ptid-8310 NRB and is not exactly the most common unit and i know it is a long shot but hey, it doesn't hurt to ask does it?
Thank you in advance!
any luck?

Hey there, I see it's been a year since this post. I'm actually looking at getting a Power Acoustik in dash unit, but I had the same concerns as you. I'm sure something could be done to really maximize the potential of this unit. Have you had any luck finding a developer who's willing to work on it or any luck improving the unit yourself?
I know there's tons of development on Pioneer's App radio units, but when these Power Acoustik & Soundstream units are half the price with a bigger screen and some of them better displays it really seems a shame they aren't being looked at.
Sorry for the late response, I actually forgot I even asked this!
But unfortunately no, I haven't had any luck as far as finding a developer that would know anything in this subject. And if you're still looking at power acoustik units I'd keep in mind that newer mobile phones are not supported as far as Bluetooth pairing is concerned. The newest device I have that is still supported by the unit is a nexus 4 so I'm assuming any android running 4.2 and lower is still okay which is upsetting since I have a g2 running lollipop ?

Should i get a nexus 6?

Hello, i was wondering if its worth getting a nexus 6 sealed in box bought in june 2015 for 250. im just scared of the battery bulge problem, any advice will be great.
I'm using it for 2 years and didn't face any battery bulge problem, at least not yet.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
The phones dated march 2015 or later did not suffer the battery bulge problems.

Quite a few people got phones with bad speakers. They make hissing crackling sounds when the battery gets to lower percentages. Mine does this and it's a minor annoyance. Everything else about this device to me is SWEET! I LOVE my Nexus 6, but it's roulette getting a device without the speaker issue. Like I said, minor annoyance and totally usable without too much issue, but noticeable nonetheless. Great phone however, love mine.

Personally I would say Go For It...especially at that price!
I got my Nexus 6 in March of 2015 and Love It. So far it is the best phone I have owned so far. And that is say a lot since I previously owned the HTC EVO, HTC M7, and HTC M8.

Keep your 250 and by a newer model.
In a few months their will be complete new Nexus models.
I am using N6 for about 2 years.
Out of the box the battery life wasn't enough for intensive use between 9 to 17. Cause the white user interface. I needed to unlock the bootloader and root the N6 to change the dpi and install layers and apps with a black background.
The N6 is good but the Google stuff is not.
Personally I would say for the next few months, try to put away $50-$100 each month until the new devices are released. While this phone is still operable for the age it is at, it lacks a few things such as fingerprint scanner and a nice camera. Not to mention the size, which can be off-putting for some.
My suggestion - Save your pennies and buy something with a Snapdragon 820+...That is at least my plan.
For 250.00 its still a solid option. The camera is fine and finger print scanner is not a huge deal. I would say it is a bit better then "operable". You will be looking at spending 600.00 to get the newest Nexus when it drops.
@smokinjoe2122: What do you define as "nice" in regards to the camera?
I personally find the camera to be quite excellent. It's no substitute for a dedicated camera if you have one. At the same time the best camera in the world will not help you if it's sitting in the camera bag when you need to get a picture.
Case in point, this picture would not have happened if I had to look for a dedicated camera in a bag. However, because I had my N6 on me, a seagull casually standing on a car was immortalized. But à chacun leur propre.
None of the things you mentioned, except for the size, are truly dealbreakers. The size can be intimidating, but to gain converts to the cause you simply have to time it right and hope they can keep an open mind. I managed to convert my roommate to a large-screen phone simply by letting her play with my N6 for a little while after I had gotten it. She got a Moto X Pure two months ago and couldn't be happier.
@Simplyeduardo, go ahead and spend the money, but you might want to invest in an OTG drive while you're at it. Especially if the phone only has 32GB of storage on it.
To answer your questions:
Comparing my Nexus 6 camera to my girlfriend's Nexus 5x, the difference is night and day, especially when it comes to HDR or low light pictures. There's also missing support for the latest features such as 4k video.
I also feel like finger print scanners are getting even more important for things such as Android pay and enterprise applications. If you've used an iPhone, many applications can be locked down with security only to be unlocked by the fingerprint scanner or pin. The Nexus 6 unfortunately will never have that technology (Sure you can use a pin, but FP is much better imho).
Lastly, the performance of this phone isn't the worst out there, but it defintely isn't the best. There's plenty of posts here and on Reddit that talk about performance issues, lag, stutters, ect. I for one can validate that, and I have a feeling it'll only get worse as Android will be designed to run better on the newer generation hardware.
So, do you spend $250 on a 1.5-2 year old phone, or do I put away another hundred to two hundred and get the newer generation Nexus or OnePlus 3?
my november 2014 bought n6 has an ever so slight buldge, with the back cover raised about 1mm(yes, barely). i bought mine for the full $650, plus tax. anyways, ive never even considered getting it relaced, as it does absolutely no harm to me or my use. ok, i cant use my n6 under water for sure, or water will get in..
but for $250, i wouldnt even think about it.
With all the development we have these phones are still relevant, and will be for quite some time. I used to trade up every 6 months to a year, but I have had this phone for almost 2 years now and see no reason to get a new one. IMHO a new phone wouldn't be an upgrade anyhow, we would have to wait on development. Just look at all the sweet mods and roms these awesome devs. Have created for us! There's something for everyone. Good luck, Happy flashing.

Question in the singular. I only asked one.
The larger CCD pixels in the sensor do make a difference, I do admit. Especially if using the Google camera app as it is barebones. However, switch the camera app to one with manual controls and that advantage is lost, since it's possible to adjust not only the ISO of the camera, but how long the shutter stays open. If you adjust the ISO to 1600 or more, you improve the sensitivity of the CCD. If you can control the length of time the shutter is opened, more light is let in. Recording more light is the name of the game.
The camera is not a deal breaker. It's a good camera that gets better when coupled with the right software. 4K video is a non-starter to me, i.e. it's irrelevant.
Fingerprint scanners are a security hole, since you can be compelled to unlock your phone without need of a warrant. One of the reasons I DIDN'T spring for a 6P at Christmas 2015 was because of the fingerprint scanner. So, not a deal breaker.
As someone who has used Touchwiz, I'm very familiar with lag. I have yet to see any lag on this device. But not everyone is as fortunate as I am, I guess.
I still would recommend this phone over other Nexus devices. The 1+3 is a tougher sell.

Kenwood DNX893S and android auto

This one is driving me nuts. The advertising for this unit shows an icon page. Messages, phone etc. That only seems to be for Carplay with the iphone. When I connect to the unit with the usb, i can't look at or receive any texts that are on my phone at the time I connect. There is no home page with the icons that show my phone aps. It won't even show the apps it's supposed to work with on Android. It seems that you can with the Apple aps. Am I doing anything wrong? It looks like Android auto was an after thought to sell more of these Kenwood units. I'm having issues navigating thru this unit. I use Android music but can't get this thing to default to my playlists. Do I have to buy an iphone just to use the potential of this $1700.00 mistake?
Wow now i am really glad i passed on this. After being burnt with 990hd i was really down on Kenwood. Went with a joying Chinese android unit and LOVE IT

First, the unit only retails at $1299.
Second, try running a stock rom then complain about it. Its the custom rom that breaks Andoid auto and bluetooth.
Third, apps NOT installed from play store will not show up on the andoid auto screen.
Learn how to use the info from this page to your advantage. when you follow it, you will be able to get spotify, pandora etc on your AA screen

990hd was such a turd. the new 893s is running on with a dual core processor, much faster and now is linux based vs before was android 2.3. it will run circles around your andoid unit from china. I have had them all since the 990/991/992/ DNN series, DNX 690/691/692 and dnx890/891/892 and now my current 893s. 893s is such a great unit compared to the rest of them out there

Eh...
1) Android *is* Linux.
2) Dual core ARM... REALLY??? You think a DUAL CORE ARM is going to "run circles" around a QUAD CORE INTEL? While it is certainly an improvement over their previous SINGLE core TURDSLUGS, twice nothing is still nothing.
3) You've HAD THEM ALL.... means that ALL of them have been inadequate. LOL, you're doing a bad job of marketing for them.
Also from Kenwood literature... "Dual Core Processor w/ Faster Start-Up Time: The Kenwood navigation receiver utilizes a Linux based system and dual core processor for faster operating speeds and enhanced stability. The unit has start-up time of approximately 17.7 seconds from OFF to the last source selected or navigation map screen."
*** YOU SERIOUSLY THINK THAT WAITING NEARLY 20 SECONDS TWIDDLING YOUR THUMBS IS FAST?
I'll take my Joying **ZERO** seconds startup ANY DAY over that. Yep, I sit in my car, turn the key, wait precisely ZERO seconds and have Google Maps up, tap in the input field and START TYPING AN ADDRESS. By the time you finish waiting, I've already backed out my driveway and am on my way up the street!
I've had kenwood too. BOY was it ever nice to get that junk out of my car.
Oh one more thing, since you are very aggressively attacking "your andoid unit from china", your kenwood is made in MALAYSIA. Yeah, that is SO MUCH BETTER than 'Made in China'. LOL

Yep, shame and embarrassment.
while I dont agree with the arguing, I would have to say the new Joyings are pretty fast. I had the older MTCD with 1GB of RAM and it was brutally slow.
However the new 2GB of RAM and Intel processor units are smooth, pretty quick, and I would say hard to beat.
Edit to add- I don't want to derail this thread, I was looking at the DNX893S pretty heavy. But it is crazy expensive, however it does look cool
You can't get the same sound out of China no name brands. There good for the money, but with all audio out , there is a big price increases to get the best sound. If you just want options, go with the cheaper one's . You can spend $ 10 000 to $ 15 000 on speakers if you want the best, but $ 500 are good to
Yes but for the money you save you buy amps and kick @SS speakers and you are there. Kenwood is just awful. Bad support and way behind the times.

Failing to find N6 replacement - 1+6, Moto G6, Nokia 7+

As described in the title.
I'm failing to find a replacement for my N6..
Pixels are way above the budget.
OnePlus feels like it but lacks stereo speakers, but looks like good enough as camera (ois) and OS (updates, cleaner).
Moto g6 is mid ranger - good value for money, lacks OIS and stereo. Plus OS updates will be long delayed if I compare it with ny wife's G5S Moto.
Nokia 7+ looked promising as design, Android One program, battery. Budget wise - exactly to the point. However missing stereo speakers. And camera looks like disappointment to reviewers due to lack of OIS.
Any thoughts ?
My brother has the Nokia 7+. And I own a Nexus 6. As for comparison, I can say that 7+ is an OKAY upgrade. But sure, N6's speakers are better. 7+ speaker is not bad tho. But trust me, you'll miss the amoled display. 7+ cameras are awesome, don't listen to reviewers. Install gcam and viola, pixel quality shots on N7+.
We have the same situation tho. For now, I consider the Xiaomi Mi8 SE and refurbished Pixel XL.
As I wait for a worthy replacement, I am maximizing the life out of my N6. Recently changed the battery, flashed custom ROM & kernel. And man, I never thought this device will still hold its own like it does. Maybe keep this phone until the end of this year. I think we still have to wait for more SD710 phones to come out. But that's just me. Cheers!
@Ivan - thanks! Sounds promising And yes - N6 is still holding on, just I've dropped it. Still has life in it though.
Which ROM do you use?

No financing options where you are? I ask because financing through Google is how I got my P2XL.
My N6 though is still seeing use. My roommate preferred it over the Moto X Style (XT1575) I got for her, simply because the screen was larger as well as Android 8.x custom ROMs. That's saying something when an older device is preferred over a newer one, but I digress. I wouldn't go with any of the options you give in your post title however. None of them have quad HD screens and apparently they don't have stereo speakers either. Instead, I'd look into used devices such as on Swappa and get one from there.
Thank you for your replies.
Yes, not easy..N6 proved to be actual in the present, and not easy to replace in mid-range.
Yes Pixels are.very expensive here.
I would go with LineageOS if I was not security freak and doubting about installing Google Apps aside from a site.
OpenGApps.org is a reputable site and has been the "go to" option for years. However, several developers on XDA also have downloadable GApps packages available. I'd hunt for them if you don't trust OpenGApps.org, and then upgrade your N6. Nitrogen is a good choice, better than LineageOS I feel.
Imagine if they revived shamu with 18:9 aspect ratio, fingerprint sensor, usb type c, upgraded camera & SoC, same awesome front firing speakerS. Heck yeah, that's my dream phone!
It already exists. It's called the Pixel 2 XL.

Nah, no headphone jack & wireless charging.
And I also mean the curved back design of shamu.
None of which were on your list. Now, obviously people's mileage will vary here, but wireless charging is something I never used, and as for the headphone jack? I was just like you in thinking I would die without a headphone jack. And then I grew up.
P. S. I rather like phones I can't spin on a desk.
OnePlus 5T seems like such a perfect replacement - probably what I'd get if I were in the market right now. Oneplus has became the de facto nexus replacement after google decided to update its pricing scheme

Thinking about this too. OP5T is still available in my country, 3rd party tho. Will wait for 5T price drops when OP6 arrives here.
I admit that I'd like to see Google buck trends like Samsung, but I don't see it happening. Since there are so few choices out there for decent devices with unlockable bootloaders you will at some point have to decide what you would prefer to give up, whether it be a display without a notch, a headphone jack, or wireless charging.
I can live without the headphone jack, but I also have bluetooth headphones. If I couldn't, I'd be using the USB audio adapter Google provided in the box.

The only thing I want is wireless charging.

And that is where mileage will vary. I never used wireless charging and don't care if the device has it.
It's too bad Google wants to be like/become Apple. First with the OS now the notch...What's next? Google needs to move away from trying to be Apple before people start to move away from Android. If they haven't started to move away already. I'm also having a hard time finding a worthy phone to replace the Nexus 6...But so far I'm happy staying with it for awhile.
