[Q] Has anyone purchased Moto Maxx from Mexico and have it worked on Tmobile in US

I am interested in getting a Moto Maxx from Mexico but want to make sure that everything works perfect on Tmobile for the US. I had issues with Droid Maxx from verizon on Tmobile and dont want same issues. Has anyone actually done this and if so, whats the result?

Yes, many running this Moto Maxx phone on T-mobile. It has LTE bands 2, 4 which are T-mobile's main LTE bands. In some markets T-mobile is also now using LTE band 12, but you probably won't miss it.
Also has GSM and HSPA bands too, of course.
If you order from Mexico, that phone is already unlocked for all networks the hardware can handle. If you order from Puerto Rico, make sure it's SIM unlocked by the seller or that he gives you the code. In Puerto Rico, sold by Claro and comes SIM locked. I have both Puerto Rico and Mexican Moto Maxx phones. The Puerto Rico eBay seller already unlocked the phone before he sent it to me.

Works fine for me. Supports all of the bands (except LTE 12) out of the box. The only phones that currently support band 12 are the Note 4 and the note edge AFAIK. Some have enabled band 12 (which the snapdragon supports) but have not been able to get a signal (likely because there is no antenna that can pull it in). None of the issues that people have reported with other Droid phones (drops to H+ and won't reconnect to LTE etc. Call someone or they call you and it drops to H and then connects right back to LTE after.

My Experience Exactly as well here in MN- almost always on LTE

That T-Mobile LTE-capable phone in MN is the one from Mexico, correct? Because the Puerto Rican dealer responded to my specific question and told me the "4G" on their model only uses HSPA+ in the U.S., not LTE.

Mexican Moto maxx and Puerto Rico Moto maxx are the same and they work perfectly with LTE At&t and t-mobile on the states.

I have both Puerto Rico and Mexico Moto Maxx phones. YES, I own two. They both have LTE.
The dealer that gave you that answer is ignorant of what he is actually selling. Even the Puerto Rico Motorola website lists the specs that show the LTE bands.

Yes, I'm aware of the spec's, etc. But I've yet to hear confirmation from anyone that full-blown 4G LTE is currently fully functional with their T-Mobile-connected Moto Maxx in the U.S. (specifically, MN). Remember...regardless of the phone spec's, the provider can also block it (a guy at Best Buy told me LTE was blocked in this case due to Verizon exclusivity agreements).

Verizon cannot block either of my Moto Maxx phones on AT&T or T-mobile. Now you are talking gibberish.
Many, many T-mobile customers have said they are using the Moto Maxx on T-mobile LTE. For some reason you don't want to believe them.
I don't know what "MN" has to do with it. T-mobile's main LTE bands are LTE band 2 and LTE band 4. If T-mobile is using LTE bands 2 and 4 in your area, the Moto Maxx will connect to them. The Moto Maxx is unlocked and now you are listening to idiots at Best Buy? I own two, they own none. They know NOTHING about the Moto Maxx, OK?
Verizon has NOTHING to do with T-mobile's or AT&T's LTE bands and NOTHING to do with the Moto Maxx working on LTE bands 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 17 (which the Moto Maxx does). Arghhh.
I have two Moto Maxx and am using one of them on AT&T right now, LTE bands 2 and 17. Verizon has nothing to do with my phone. OK? Verizon can't block it, they can't sneeze at it, they can't even see it.

Take my word for it, those aren't HSPA speeds. Something else gives it away -- the LTE indicator in the status bar.

There's no difference in me being connected to LTE band 2 on AT&T and you being connected to LTE band 2 on T-mobile in your area.
You can see how many different LTE cell towers I have connected to over the past few days...
Eight AT&T LTE band 2 cell towers and five AT&T LTE band 17 cell towers. (AT&T uses LTE band 2 and 17 in the metro Atlanta area. ) Across the nation AT&T uses LTE bands 2, 4, 5, 17. So, if I travel elsewhere, the app log would show more LTE bands. But I've proven my point.
T-mobile uses LTE bands 2, 4, and now 12. You stick a T-mobile sim card in the Moto Maxx and you WILL connect to T-mobile's LTE network if there's a tower within range transmitting LTE band 2 or 4.

And LAST but most important, this Moto Maxx phone has been certified by the FCC to operate in the U.S. and U.S. territories on OTHER providers (not Verizon). Motorola even promised the FCC this phone especially had LTE bands 2 and 4, even though the FCC found more bands. But especially LTE bands 2 and 4 HAVE TO WORK IN THE USA.
The Droid Turbo has a different FCC ID number. And the Moto Maxx does not have CDMA bands enabled so it's NOT for Verizon, but yet has been certified for usage in the USA and USA territories. I don't know how much more I have to say.
This is what the FCC actually found, during testing and certification.
But the point is, the Moto Maxx (XT1225) phone is approved for use in the USA. Verizon has nothing to do with this phone, and has no control over how this phone is used on non-Verizon networks (GMS/HSPA/LTE). I have no idea why you think they would.

I just received my moto maxx yesterday and I can tell you I have 4G on T-Mobile. I live in las vegas and have speeds of 18 mbps. Those speeds are from inside my home where my signal is notoriously crappy. Some people have mentioned that they are unable to browse Internet while on the phone but I can do that just fine. Text, mms, call and internet all work as they should with zero complaints.

Tell him you have LTE and not "4G" and he'll be happy. LTE is the only real 4G anyway, but AT&T and T-mobile engaged in so much false advertising with HSPA being called "4G" that people are confused.
But apps like LTE Discovery show how you are connected and signal strength. Also Xposed/Gravity Box gives you the option to display "LTE" when you are connected to LTE network.
Of course over 50mbps download speed with 39ms ping time IS LTE. You don't need the status bar indicator to tell you that.

Actually I just downloaded lte discovery and it says I am on lte band 4 specifically. I hope this helps.

Now I just need to figure out if I want to spend >$500 on a new phone with 4.4 and without OIS for its camera, especially since phones with 5.0 and Snapdragon 810's are due within a month (despite the supposed "issues" of the 810...and yeah, I know the Maxx will get 5.0 soon, but its upgrade "life" will be shorter).

The XT1250 does, not the XT1225. There's two Moto Maxx models, one sold in the U.S. on other CDMA/LTE carriers. One sold internationally with just GSM/HSPA/LTE.

I listed several regional CDMA/LTE carriers in this thread who sell the XT1250 "Moto Maxx", which is identical to the XT1254 (Verizon Droid Turbo) except for carrier-specific software. Even has the exact same FCC ID. There may be others. I stopped at half a dozen.

NOTE: Even though one carrier has a 64GB version listed, an XDA member contacted them and apparently all they are selling is the 32GB version. Again, the carriers in the two posts above are not complete. I used my knowledge of the cellphone industry to go through smaller CDMA/LTE carriers (actual facilities-based carriers, not MVNOs), went to their websites and looked at the devices they sold. I knew the XT1250 Moto Maxx (non-Verizon "Quark" for U.S. carriers) existed, and once I found a Wisconsin-based carrier, I knew there would be more. When I got to 5 or 6, I stopped.

Both Moto Maxx models (XT1250, XT1225) and the "Droid Turbo" XT1254 (Verizon's name for it) are all Motorola "Quark" phones with identical hardware. The XT1250 and XT1254 are both U.S.-sold CDMA/GSM/HSPA/LTE model -- with the same FCC ID.
The XT1225 has no CDMA and slightly different LTE bands (with some overlap). It has a different FCC ID.

OK, so I have searched around in these forums, found the thread where some people were able to unlock some bands for the MOTO MAXX XT1225. However, I just want to verify before I return the hastily bought Droid Turbo from Verzion (XT1254): has anyone had success unlocking LTE Band 17 to use on AT&T here in the states? Right now, it's the only issue I have with the device. I get HSPA+ no problem, phone calls, etc but LTE eludes me. I live in Durham, NC and I verified on my old phone that I use band 17 for LTE.
Yes, I know I should've researched more but hey, some guy on youtube said it works and apparently thats all I need to buy a phone. (Especially at the decent price of $550 for the 32GB)

Based on FCC info there is no reason to believe the XT1254 supports band 17 LTE. I am quite sure there is nothing you can do to enable it. The XT1254 and XT1225 do share band 2 and 4 LTE hardware but the rest of the LTE hardware is different.

Yeah, other phones have had LTE and HSPA bands enabled, but usually it was bands which are enabled in the same device in other regions -- like Galaxy S5 European bands for USA or vice versa. The modem and firmware supports those bands, but Samsung had certain bands locked down or enabled, depending on where the phone was sold.
People have been unable to enable European LTE band 20 on the Moto Maxx XT1225 because no Quark phone has that band anywhere.
HOWEVER, LTE band 17 is enabled in all XT1225 Quark phones... so could LTE band 17 be enabled in the XT1250 (U.S. CDMA/LTE Moto Maxx/XT1254 (Droid Turbo) ? Theoretically, is possible, but I'm not going to say yes.
I delved into all this deeply months ago to try to enable LTE band 5 on the XT1225 -- since it was found by FCC certification tests, but Motorola didn't list in the Latin America specs when released. Then, after doing a whole bunch of work and confirming with the NV calculator dev, LTE band 5 was already enabled as was HSPA band 4 (for T-mobile). So, while knowledge is always useful, all my work was not necessary.
When the Moto Turbo XT1225 was released (same model number, same FCC ID, same SKU), Motorola FINALLY listed all the bands that are enabled.
@Steve-x is correct. Up to this point in time, no one has enabled LTE bands that are not already enabled. Still, LTE band 17 is theoretically possible since all the Quarks share the same Snapdragon 805 modem, and some do have LTE band 17.
In a similar way, many many people have enabled LTE band 3 on the Nexus 5 D820 and enabled LTE bands 2 and 4 on the Nexus 5 D821. I'm going to do that soon for my wife's Nexus 5, as we are going to Brazil this summer.

Google has two Nexus 5 phones, with different FCC ID, different bands enabled due to being sold in different parts of the world. People have been able to enable LTE bands Google locked down.

Thanks for the help guys. After thinking about it some more, if I wasn't paying full retail out of pocket and I didn't have a special return window with Verizon, I'd probably give this a shot.

XT1250 on AT&T LTE Band 17
It seems the XT1250 and XT1254 are counterparts -- I just purchased a XT1250 thinking Band 17 was enabled, but only getting HPSA+ and no LTE.
Any luck, thoughts, etc on this lately?

Not "counterparts", identical devices. The XT1250 (U.S. Moto Maxx) = XT1254 (Droid Turbo). Same FCC ID, same bands, same exact device. Since the XT1254 does not have LTE band 17, neither does the XT1250. The XT1250 is basically the dev version of the XT1254, with unlockable bootloader via Motorola website like the other Quarks.
While all the Quarks share the same hardware, including antenna, the radios are different. The XT1225 has a different FCC ID because it does have different radio.

The XT1250/XT1254 has CDMA bands which the XT1225 does not have or need. The XT1225 has more HSPA bands, different mix of LTE bands and more LTE bands. All Quarks share LTE bands 2, 3, 4, 7. But the XT1250/XT1254 has LTE band 13, while the XT1225 has LTE bands 5 & 17, plus more HSPA bands.

I was wondering that now with root and BL unlock, is it possible to enable more bands to work with AT&T LTE? I enjoy the Turbo and having H+ only isn't exactly a deal breaker, but LTE would be nice to have yet. Any help appreciated!

Unless the Droid Turbo XT1254 has the AT&T LTE bands, there's no way to "enable" them.
Besides the Turbo already works on almost any carrier, you just have to edit the APN settings for your network.

Thank you. I was under the impression that the bands were present, just not enabled or something. But the bands just simply aren't there.

The Droid Turbo XT1254/U.S. Moto Maxx XT1250 (same identical device, same FCC ID) does not have all the AT&T bands. AT&T uses LTE bands 2, 4, 5, 17.
Only the "international" Moto Maxx XT1225 & Moto Turbo XT1225 has all the AT&T bands. The XT1225 has a different FCC ID from the XT1254/XT1250 -- has no CDMA bands, but has more HSPA bands, and a different mix of LTE bands (bands 5 and 7, but no band 13). The radios between the XT1250/XT1254 and the XT1225 are not compatible, so you cannot flash one over the other.
You CAN use the Droid Turbo/U.S. Moto Maxx on AT&T, but you will not have LTE bands 5 and 17. Here in the Atlanta area, LTE band 17 is used extensively. You would only have LTE bands 2 & 4. For AT&T, you would be missing LTE bands 5 & 17. Which means you would drop down to HSPA (3G) in those areas where 2 & 4 were not available. In metro Atlanta, if I had the Droid Turbo on AT&T I would be on LTE band 2 half the time (north of Atlanta) and HSPA the rest of the time (in Atlanta, and south), since it doesn't have LTE band 17.

All the Quarks share LTE bands 2, 3, 4, and 7. In the FCC letter it only mentions they share LTE bands 2 & 4, because no U.S. carriers use LTE bands 3 & 7, and the FCC is a U.S. regulatory agency.
Can you "enable" LTE bands 5 & 17 on the XT1254/XT1250?
Conversely, can you enable LTE band 13 on the XT1225?
Theoretically you could, since another Quark model has them... but realistically probably not. Samsung, One Plus, and others manufacturers disable bands not needed on their phones for various regions/carriers -- and by rooting and using modem software (ike QPST/QXDM) people have been able to "enable" additional LTE bands in various Snapdragon phones. The Galaxy S5 in Europe has the bands needed there, and the Galaxy S5 in Latin America has the bands needed there. The bands not needed are disabled via software interface, and by editing that people have been able to create "world" phones with all bands enabled! (Google it.)
The difference in Nexus phones is those bands are NOT disabled.
But that only works if the bands were there to begin with, then disabled by the manufacturer. People have tried to add LTE band 20 (used in Europe) to the Moto XT1225 and were not successful. It would show it was enabled but they could not receive/send any signal on that band. The issue is no Quarks anywhere have LTE band 20, so there's not really an LTE band 20 that can be enabled. Like turning on a light switch that's not connected to anything.
HOWEVER, theoretically, since one variant of Quark has LTE band 13 and the other doesn't, and other variant has LTE band 5 & 17 and the other doesn't, you could create a Quark that had ALL the bands between the two: 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 13, 17.. But it would depend on if Motorola/Lenovo manufacturer is similar process to Samsung and One Plus. Are all those bands there and they just disable what they don't want? Or do they use completely separate radio firmware for both variants?
I don't have the time or patience to go looking for bands I don't need. I did all the band enabling stuff earlier before Motorola admitted the XT1225 had LTE band 5 already.
This is a screenshot of the "3G" bands in QPST. There's similar interface for the LTE bands. But it was a LOT of hassle, and then I found out the XT1225 already had LTE band 5. It was in the FCC tests, but not in the official specs when first released. Thanks! That was very informative. I'm ok with HSPA+, which I get 90% of the time and LTE the other 10. The Verizon XT1254 even has a proper "H+" icon, I had read previously it says "3G"

Is HSPA+ more battery efficient than LTE I wonder? It's of no consequence since it takes a fair bit of effort to kill the battery in a Turbo, but still curious

I think it is, since it's basically just 3G right? I do know that LTE sips your battery like nothing else though.

I ordered the XT1250 on a whim and was apparently confused on what would and wouldn't work. So after reading this and reading some failures others had in enabling band 17, is it safe to assume that I should probably send it back since I won't have good LTE coverage on LTE (especially if I am moving to Atlanta for grad school at GT next semester)? I bought it when I saw the initial xt1225 vs xt1250 vs xt1254 guide that said the 1250 worked with ATT LTE. So it only works with ATT LTE in some areas?

You won't get LTE band 17 on the XT1250 U.S. Moto Maxx (XT1254 Droid Turbo under another name).
I have AT&T, live in metro Atlanta area and use LTE band 17 quite a bit.
I'm in downtown Atlanta right now at work, and I'm on LTE band 17. North of Atlanta, in the suburbs where I live AT&T uses LTE band 2, and further north towards Chattanooga or west towards Alabama there's a lot of LTE band 4. Georgia Tech of course is smack in downtown Atlanta, so you would be there a lot more than me.
Here's my LTE Discovery log, so you can see.
However, you would still have connectivity on AT&T... You would get LTE bands 2 & 4 where those are available, but you would drop down to HSPA in areas where there was only LTE band 17. Nationwide, AT&T uses LTE bands 2, 4, 5, 17. But, in Georgia (and other states I've traveled) I have not encountered LTE band 5 yet.
The XT1250 and XT1254 are identical, down to the FCC ID. Same CDMA, HSPA, and LTE bands.
The XT1225 has a different FCC ID because it has different mix of LTE bands and greater number of LTE bands (2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 17), more HSPA bands and no CDMA.

Hard to say...I'm just dealing with HSPA+, I average 5meg down and 1.5-2megs up, so it's adequate for most anything. Of course it pulls LTE some of the time also.

Gotcha. Thanks guys. I was thinking since Motorola said the antennas were the same that I could enable band 17, but since that's not the case, I may send it back and save up for the xt1225 or the Moto X Force.

But is it true that 17 can't be enabled? I'm still looking into this myself as I really don't have the means to get a different phone, at least not one on par with the Verizon Turbo.

That's kind of what I was getting. I'm still a bit curious. I read in another thread @ChazzMatt said it would be theoretically possible since the Motorola FCC letter stated that they had the same hardware and antenna, but he did not recommend others trying it.
And yeah, I'm a college kid about to start grad school, so I don't have the means to purchase a new international flagship either. I know that if I get the phone and request the unlock code from Motorola, then my warranty is totally void. I'm used to that, I've unlocked and rooted every phone I've ever owned. So if ChazzMatt thinks bands 5 and 17 may actually be there, I'm willing to jump down that rabbit hole if I keep the phone.
EDIT: Also, having grown up in rural MS, 5 megs down is like lightning. My residence wasn't eligible for any internet service better than hughesnet until two months ago when UVerse became available.

If you're willing to jump through the QPST, QXDM, LTE bands calculator and similar software hoops , you can try. But, if it doesn't work for you, don't blame me. Adding LTE bands 5 and 17 to the XT1250/XT1254 is more feasible than trying to add something like LTE band 20 (Europe) since at least another Quark (XT1225) does have them. Or adding LTE band 13 to the XT1225...since the XT1250/XT1254 has it. But I don't need LTE band 13, so I'm not concerned.
I did a crash course in all this last year, before Motorola finally admitted the XT1225 had LTE band 5. It was there in the FCC tests, but then was not listed in the official specs -- for some strange reason -- when the phone was sold in various Latin American countries. (I think Motorola originally was going to sell the XT1225 through AT&T, which is why it has ALL the AT&T LTE bands, then changed their plans.) Then, when the Moto Turbo XT1225, with the same FCC ID as the Moto Maxx XT1225 debuted in India, Motorola finally listed all the LTE bands.
(Two devices with the same FCC ID have identical communication properties, bands, etc. This is by law, due the American Disabilities Act. Handicapped people depend on this stuff and companies can be fined large amounts of money by the government, plus be liable for MILLIONS in lawsuits from eager lawyers. That was why when I found the XT1250 U.S. Moto Maxx and XT1254 Droid Turbo had the same FCC ID, all the arguments for Verizon "exclusivity" were over. Legally, technically, everything, they are the same device. Don't care if they have different Motorola model names or numbers.)

Oh, I certainly wouldn't blame you. You never claimed it would actually work, just that it was possible. I haven't read through all the nitty gritty details of the process yet, since I was on the fence about using it. But I do have three questions before I try it:
1) How long do you think it would take?
2) Would I need to repeat the process any time I flashed a new ROM?
3) Is the risk of failure limited more to the bands just not being there or actually hard bricking the phone?
If the process doesn't take a terribly long time and the phone comes in by Wednesday (which it should), I can try it before I head to Georgia Tech for a visit Thursday.

Sweet. I may give it a shot. I'm rocking band 2 lte at my current location and back home, so worst case scenario, I don't get it. I'll let you know if I get it working. I'll have to get the phone and unlock the bootloader and all then familiarize myself with Motorola procedures since I'm used to HTC and Samsung.

Which "Turbo" do you have? Droid Turbo XT1254 or Moto Turbo XT1225? I assume Droid Turbo because only those people don't also give the model number.
There's two distinct devices (two FCC IDs), sold under three model names:
Verizon Droid Turbo XT1254/U.S. Moto Maxx XT1250 (same phone, same bands, same FCC ID) and
Moto Turbo XT1225/"international" Moto Maxx XT1225 (different FCC ID from XT1254/XT1250, but all XT1225 share the same bands with each other, and are the same phone).
These Droid Turbo/Moto Turbo/Moto Maxx are all under the "Quark" umbrella and except for radio bands are the same hardware, just like all "LG G4" are all the same hardware even though sold by different carriers in different countries.
All the custom ROMs support all Quarks. Custom ROMs over here are for all Quarks, ROMs (kernels, recovery, apps) over in the other Quark forum are also for the XT1254. Most dev work is still over there.
Of course Quarks with GSM/HSPA/LTE carrier SIM cards get simultaneous data/calls -- that's only a Verizon (CDMA) issue. But during phone calls on GSM/HSPA/LTE carriers, you will temporarily drop down to HSPA during the call (for simultaneous data/cellular voice), then jump back to LTE (data only) after the call is completed.

What is "OK" ROM?
We have 7 custom Marshmallow ROMs for the Quark (maybe 8 depending on how you count) -- they work on ALL Quarks, thanks to our CM dev.
But I'm not familiar with OK ROM. Oh, maybe you mean AOKP? See, I think you are just looking at ROMs here. Yeah, Bliss and AOKP are great, but we have TWO Quark forums. Click that link above and you see all the ROMs. TWRP recovery and BHB27 custom kernel and other ROMs live over in the other Quark forum.
Right now, seems Bliss and Resurrection Remix (Marshmallow) are the two most popular.
Since you don't have the device yet, just to let you know... the XT1254 need paid bootloader unlock via Sunshine($25). Thank Verizon. The other Quarks have free bootloader unlock via code from Motorola website. No, there's no free bootloader unlock for the XT1254. Just believe us.

As for what GSM/HSPA/LTE bands the Droid Turbo XT1254 supports? Well, let's discuss all Quarks. The XT1254 is yours.
The XT1225 and XT1254/XT1250 all share LTE bands 2, 3, 4, 7.
The XT1225 additionally has LTE band 5 and 17 (more bands used by AT&T).

The XT1254/XT1250 instead has LTE band 13 (Verizon LTE band), plus CDMA bands. While it does have some HSPA bands, there's not as many as in the XT1225.

So, of course you can use the Droid Turbo XT1254 on SOME of AT&T's LTE bands or some of T-mobile's LTE bands. Just not all of them!
The problem you will have is in cities like Atlanta, GA where I live where AT&T uses LTE band 17 a lot. In places like that you will have HSPA/HSPA+. In areas where AT&T uses LTE bands 2 and 4 you will be OK. In northern part of Georgia when I drive to Chattanooga, that's mostly LTE band 4, so you would be OK.
So, for AT&T you mostly need a phone with LTE bands 2, 4, 17. (5 is used very little.)
For T-mobile you mostly need a phone with 2, 4, 12.
You have a phone -- the Droid Turbo XT1254 -- with two of those bands: LTE bands 2 & 4.
I have the sibling Quark, the Moto XT1225 -- so I have all of AT&T's LTE bands.
As long as you stay in places AT&T uses LTE bands 2 & 4, you will get LTE. IF you drop down to HSPA, it's probably because you are in an LTE band 17 area or just crappy LTE signal in general.
Same advice with T-mobile and LTE band 12.

Now on AT&T or T-mobile you will NOT get VoLTE. AT&T restricts that to certain AT&T-branded phones and T-mobile restricts that to LTE band 12. BUT you will still get simultaneous data/cellular voice during phone calls on either carrier.

I have a droid turbo that I've been using for about a year using WiFi only. I make all my calls/txts via google hangouts.
I want to pick up a data-only sim for it, but am not sure what would be compatible with a Verizon phone. I don't need a voice plan at all (rather keep using hangouts dialer) and only need a small amount of data per month (sub 1GB).
What are my options? Thanks for the help.

The Turbo is an international phone that is compatible with both CDMA and GSM networks, and it is not SIM locked, so just about anything you plug in should work from a hardware standpoint. If I were you, I would look up the bands that your carriers of choice use and compare them with the bands that the Turbo are capable of receiving, and pick the carrier where there is the most overlap.

U.S.
AT&T uses 2, 4, 5, 12/17 (17 is a subset of 12) and some more LTE bands are coming on line like LTE band 30 -- but still in most places it's 2, 4, 17. I can show you my LTE Discovery logs for my XT1225 -- which has 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 17. While I have run across LTE band 5 a few times on AT&T, it's mostly for supplemental LTE coverage in dense LTE zones. There's very few standalone LTE band 5 locations. But if I didn't have LTE band 17 on my phone I would be dropping down to HSPA a lot!.
Where I live (Atlanta metro area), 17 is use a LOT inside the city where I work -- while 2 and 17 are used around the perimeter and LTE band 4 is used up north of the city and towards the Tennessee state line.
If were on AT&T and you lived in an area where 2 and 4 are only used, you would be lucky. However, If you lived in an area where AT&T used 17 quite a bit (like inside Atlanta city limits), you would have to stay on HSPA a lot.
T-mobile uses 2, 4, 12.
Any MVNOs affiliated with those carriers (H20, Net10, etc.) would use those bands too, of course.
Stay away from Sprint and any of its MVNOs.

In South America, many of the major carriers use LTE bands 3 and 7, which is why the Droid Turbo XT1254 is popular as a used phone in that region. Although the "international" Quark 64GB XT1225 ballistic nylon + Kevlar was released for Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Puerto Rico -- a 32GB Droid Turbo XT1254 is a lower cost option for many with otherwise the same hardware specs.
XT1225 has more HSPA bands and LTE bands than the XT1254, and slightly different LTE bands -- but are otherwise the same phone. But the XT1254 came in two memory variants -- 32GB and 64GB, while the XT1225 was 64GB only. While there were 64GB Droid Turbos also with Ballistic Nylon + Kevlar, the ones flooding the secondary markets around the world seem to mostly be the 32GB models, which of course have no expandable memory. It's a trade-off. I won't buy a 32GB phone nowadays, even if it had microSD card (which the Quarks do not).
The XT1225 has held its value better than the XT1254 -- I think because of the 64GB memory and easily unlocked bootloader -- plus more HSPA bands instead of relatively useless CDMA bands most of the world does not use.

Take UK for instance... Vodafone uses 1, 3, 7, 20, 38. You'll get reception on 3 and 7, but not the others. If you are unlucky enough to live in an area where there is no 3 and 7, then you would almost never get any LTE. But you could still drop down to HSPA.
