Mi5 gps - Xiaomi Mi 5 Questions & Answers

Hello guys, wanna ask something
Are you guys experiencing the gps cannot lock, and always "searching for gps"? I tested it outside with google maps and high accuracy settings but still no luck.
Im currently on miui 8 global stable, is there any way to fix this gps issue?

me too and actually lots of people having this gps issue on mi5. I'm looking for solutions to it also.

Try updating again via updater, click the 3 dots on the top right, it will download the whole package, and reboot again. It works for me

I have the developer MIUI 8 6.8.25 and my GPS works perfect.

Can anyone recommend a good free app for GPS testing?

Try 'GPS Status & Toolbox' from the Play store.
+1 on this, I am also having constant issues with my gps, it seems to be pretty random as it would sometimes lock immediately while the other time i have to wait up to 15min.
I am currently on 6.4.27 from xiaomi.eu as it seems to be the one of very few roms where download transfer rate is not an issue.

Doesn't work when plugged in to either of my QC 2 fast chargers (car and home).
Works fine normal slow charger.

I think it's software related regarding the GPS issues in mi5
Because right now I'm on the custom ROM, the latest multirom, the GPS works flawlessly with no issues at all when I'm using google maps to navigate. Meanwhile the latest global stable has a very bad GPS performance, unusable even.
So I guess I'm gonna keep using this multirom instead of the official stable release, and hope that the devs who're responsible for developing the global release finally fix the issue in the next global release :good:

I had gps problem with all v8 miui rom, cannot get gps locked on google maps. when using gps test the fone only see 5 satellites. No fix solution working yet!

Guys,
Couldn't it be that a certain batch of MI5s has been manufactured with a faulty GPS module? I have tested it on countless rom versions both MIUI and AOSP/CM. It is always the same, my Mi5 takes ridiculous 20-30mins to obtain a lock and then loses it every 2-3mins.
The only occasion when GPS was working fine was few days after I've bought the phone and took an 800km trip, it was stable all the time and I was very happy with its performance as it obtained a lock almost instantly. I was on 6.4.27 from xiaomi.eu back then. Problems have started when I was driving back (and I didn't change ROM during that time) but it was nothing compared to what I'm experiencing now, I am under impression that this is getting worse with each day.
I am back on 6.4.27 now and it's not any better. The GPS is unusable in its current state and I'm considering sending my phone to the seller for a replacement.
My phone was manufactured in May 2016 (says the box), it's a 32GB black version, could you guys please let me know when were yours produced so that we can (or can't) establish a common pattern here?
Cheers.
EDIT:
The issue seems resolved with the latest update (6.9.1 from xiaomi.eu). GPS on my Mi5 has been stable for the last 4 days with an average of ~23 satellites detected, it takes around 30s to obtain a fix. That's a huge improvement, keep it up and we might see other issues resolved once and for all

i'm planning to buy a mi5 but first i want to be sure that i won't have gps issues as had with g5!
at first you said that gps was weak either on MIUSI or CM/AOSPA.. that seems to be an HW issue.. so how is it possible to have solved gps issues with a SW update? do you still have rock solid GPS tracking? i need it for sport and gaming purposes

any clue how to fix it?

For me it always flworked outside but i didn't work inside my house only...

Its still not fixed....its been 5 months and still not fixed... I still dont understand i spent 350$ on this piece of ****
Someone please help me fix this issue..

Mine has always worked fine. I am always on the latest global dev of miui. What did you try to resolve it?

I've tried different GPS fix in the google store, changed to xiaomi.eu in 2-3 different versions, changed to global developer, wiped everything, edited the gps config, turned off miui battery optimization and granting google maps permisions to all. Nothing seems to fix it, always 15 or less satellites, bad signal and about 2-3mins to lock the position.
Nothing seems to work... Now trying to install 6.11.10 xiaomi.eu and then switch to the latest xiaomi.eu stable as recommended. If I find any solution I'll let you know, but I'm staring to think it's related to hardware, my GF owns another mi5 and 0 problems since the first day.
Edit: Installed 6.11.10 without formating system aaaaand.. nothing changed.
Installed again formating system and 6-10s I get my location for the first time, more GPS showing and seems to work fine.
I'll update again to last xiaomi.eu and test it to see if all keeps working.
For the time being: 6.11.10 xiaomi.eu with format system corrects the GPS error

Because of the unusable and unreliable GPS, my very expensive Mi 5 Pro Ceramics will be sold.
Nothing will ever be fixed for this phone, because Xiaomi does not care about a solution.
What is a phone worth that has GPS problems? I paid 370 USD for the 128 GB version.

My GPS has working fine but since 2 months I have the same problem.
I am using a magnetic holder in my car for my MI5.
But without problems until that moment.
Are you usign magnetic holder??? Perhaps that's the problem, but I am not sure.
I will sell my MI5 because i need the GPS for my job.

I don't have GPS issues per se, but when it is connected to the USB for power in the car it doesn't work. The moment I un-plug it the location is fixed and it works as per normal.

Having the sa,e f*** issues
I am having problem with the GPS since I bought the phone...
At the beginning was taking super long to fix the position... sometimes half an hour.
It was working and failing apparentely randomly...
but now... worst!!!! is not working at all. 0 Satelites
The internal test of the GPS fails...
So I think that if I am still on time I will give it back or change it or something!!!!

[Q] Buggy GPS, am I the only one?

Hey guys, I'm having GPS issues with my phone. Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same.
I'm getting a decently long lock time and then afterwards, every 10-15 mins I'm getting a lock loss followed by a little delay then a lock again.
In case it helps, I'm on stock build KTU84P.N910TUVU1ANJ7.
Consequentially, if someone could help me out by giving me the following files from their phone, it'd be really appreciated:
/system/lib/hw/gps.default.so
/system/lib/libloc_core.so
/system/lib/libloc_api_v02.so
/system/lib/libloc_eng.so
/system/etc/gps.conf
Same here.. Across ROMs(NJ7 based ROM and stock NJ7) as well. Did the compass calibration but didn't fix it. Navigation on this phone is pretty terrible since it loses gps every 15 minutes like what you're seeing.. Any suggestions from anyone would be great!
I flashed the new baseband and still am having the issue of a buggy GPS...
I did have initial issues.
But the compass calibration seems to have resolved most of those.
Though yesterday I did lose the gps signal, which I thought was weird.
It was the first time it did that which I can remember.
It's happened to me on all my Note phones. Samsungs gps is less than spectacular.
Ya I'm having the same issue it doesn't matter the ROM still same issue. But think its a Samsung firmware issue. It works for me initially on a trip A to B but seems way back B to A it stops. Didn't have this issue with note 3. Part of my reason for bigger phone is GPS use so this is irritating. If not fixed with lollipop might have to change.
Sent from my SM-N910T using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
My Note 4 is currently completely stock/unrooted NK4, and I've seen the same thing - GPS works for several minutes, dies for about 5 seconds, then comes back. I've also once had GPS fail to lock at all until I rebooted the phone. :-/
Oh, well. It's still way better than my old S3 which had been dropped quite a few times.
I'm not having any gps issues. The new updated maps is doing it for me.
But, on other phones I have installed the faster fix app when having gps issues. It can be acquired in the playstore:

[Q] GPS losing signal

Hi,
I have a brand new stock Nexus 6. I have just finished configuring it and started to use Navigation. I can see that the GPS is loosing signal ("looking for satellites") every couple of minutes, rather randomly, for some 10-20 seconds. I use GPS Status to check this. I have trying to search net for anyone with similar issues, but not found anything. Has anybody seen this behavior before, or should I have the device repaired/replaced?
Mine is perfect so far. I used navigation for more than 400 km with 230 km the longest without stopping, no problem at all. Navigation software was Nokia HERE. GPS was strong, quick and reliable.
GPS is set to device mode.
Stock ROM, stock kernel, stock recovery, not rooted.
Please check apps, probably there is one causing your problem. Otherwise probably you got defective one ?

Thanks. I will try device mode and see if this helps. If not I will have the device replaced

Terrible GPS Performance

I've noticed lately that my G920T has a terrible time keeping GPS lock. Definitely a pain when I'm trying to use Waze or other GPS apps. It seems to be significantly worse in my car but overall, GPS Status reports that most satellite signal health is bad. I don't have a case on my phone, so I really have no idea what could be the issue. I've tried resetting AGPS to no effect.
I'm currently on XtreStoLite 3.3.1, running Arter's kernel, but I have experienced this issue on other kernels as well.
I've been noticing this too. Especially when driving. It seems to happen most when an app installs/updates in the background. Toggling GPS on and off in quick settings fixes it, but it's inexcusable and impossible to do while driving, when you need it most.

Are you running greenify? You'd have to toggle doze off... If not download the gps conf files from online and use the appropriate one for your geographic region.
I've experienced similar, as well as some other random stuff that I won't get into here, started about 5 weeks ago. Basically seems to come down to having power saving enabled and maybe screen off (I'm almost always running power save). Francis might be onto something with doze, but it shouldn't be disabling GPS while it's actively running in an app (navigation, fitness trackers, etc) whether PS enabled or screen on or not. I've had this phone since last October, done a few different ROMs, but I'm currently stock (EPF1) with just root, no other mods and have been in that state for several months (because I've been lazy), no updates or anything. Tried removing apps that might have been installed recently at the time, to no avail. No clue what the deal is, but I'm gonna flash some custom ROMs again, which hopefully solves whatever bug issue this is.
Don't think I provided any solution, but wanted to give some input as I had similar issues.
I discovered the problem. I was using Arter97's kernel. Re flashed the kernel that comes with the ROM; GPS works much better.

General Can't turn on WiFi and Bluetooth

Was about to put it as a [Question] but decided to place it as possible troubleshoot and experience for anyone with same problem.
Damn, was not expecting this and out of the blue.
I used my mi11ultra normally today, on Xiaomi.eu 12.5.11.0.
I order from Uber, while i waited, was playing asphalt 9. Then poof, lost my wifi connection. Could use mobile data.
At 30% battery remaining.
Couldn't connect to wifi and decided to reboot my phone.
For a few tries turning on wifi reboots my phone after freezing for a few seconds.
Sometimes it doesnt even turn on(no blue icon)
Turn off phone and let the heat dissipate. it's not hot today, and im using FHD res at 120hz, also haven't been playing for a long time, maybe 30minutes.
Tried restart i wiped daivilk and art cache on twrp.
Tried updating just now to 12.5.12.0 , nothing.
Tried Reset Wifi, bluetooth and mobile, nothing.
It lets me, sometimes, enable wifi, search for networks, connect and the wifi shuts down after about 5 seconds.
Right now as i was writing this and decide charged the phone so i could factory wipe. Im at 60% battery and the issue is gone for now.
I posting BOLD on battery comment because i found it that that was the issue oddly enough.
I'm charging the phone till 100% and will let you know if it happens again. "i hope i don't jinx it."
My greatest fear is that i would have to send it to repairs which takes time.
I Jinxed it . Going to Factory reset.
Watched abit of Netflix and then suddenly it freezed the phone and rebooted automatically.
EDIT: It's a faulty wifi module... Have to send it for repairs

Chinese version. I even flashed original stock Chinese rom 12.5.12.0 and locked bootloader and it freezes and reboots itself when using wifi or bluetooth.

Sounds like it might be a hardware issue if it persists across all ROMs
Do you have a warranty to get a free fix ?

It had warranty, yes, and it was the Wifi module but ultimately i decided to get a refund.
Curiously i read it's a Mi 11 Series issue, if you decide to search in google "mi 11 wifi issue".
So i have to say farewell to Mi 11 Ultra Community.
My decision was done with several annoyances from Xiaomi and not for the hardware itself, all the crazy features and camera are badass.
Lack of optimization,
Missing gestures navigation with different launchers(which other manufactures already fixed long time ago in android 11...)
Generic updates(same changelog for all devices) and lack of transparency.
I still advise my friends and family to get a Xiaomi device for what they get for the price and i keep getting impressed by the hardware in these devices.
Also love the ecosystem and new features being added every MIUI version.
I got a POCO M3 with Android 10 Xiaomi.eu, that works gesture navigation and doesn't need third party apps.
I think it all comes down to software, because in the hardware department there isn't any complain from me.
I might even get a Poco X3 Pro for 170€ for a secondary device and install some AOSP rom there.
This decision might change in the future since Xiaomi said they are implementing a team dedicated for software issues, but not to this device.
Until then goodbye
Just my opinion,
seems like all hardware issues are happening to people who flashed non stock rom's.
Fingerprints before, and now wifi and Bluetooth.
Glad I am with global version and stock rom (tried .eu for a while and found it garbage). fingers crossed to stay happy

Question miui 13.0.4

I've had the 11t pro for a little more than 2 months and even though it's not the best device out there, it does a pretty good job for a budge phone with such specs(in my opinion)
a few things I've noticed and not sure if others share the same frustration are:
after upgrading to miui 13.0.4 I noticed in top left corner (mic/cam)icons that show up when I open any app using them...any way to disable them?
when playing a game, I noticed phone sometimes lags so badly(though it's not a demanding game, visual wise) and I can't even have a whatsapp video call while playing without phone going terribly slow until I end the game.
sometimes out of the blue, the phone becomes super laggy even with no apps running, and I can't figure out what is causing it, so I end up restarting it.
if anyone has noticed anything else or has got any tips/tricks please share
p.s: is it doable to flash an eu rom on a device with global rom? I was told difference between both is google pay on european which doesn't exist on global, but I have it on mine.

The mic and camera icons is an Android 12 security feature to let you know when you might be listened to or seen, and I don't think it can be removed.
No idea regarding the game and slow downs. Sometimes with a major version change it is better to factory reset and set up from scratch, so that might help.
Yes you can flash different ROMs from other regions. The IMPORTANT thing is if your device came with a Global ROM and you unlock your bootloader and flash the Europe ROM, then you must not lock the bootloader again, if you do it will brick your device. You can put back the original Global ROM then lock again.
Hope that help.s

After updating from 12.5.21 to 13.0.9 I have experienced lags in various situation as well. After that I unlocked bootloader and flashed xiaomi.eu 13.0.4, but it's not much better. Now I'm thinking about downgrading to xiaomi.eu 12.5.10 or stock 12.5.21, that worked very well.

I use xiaomi Eu rom without any problem.
it is preferable for the first installation to use the script "windows_fastboot_first_install_with_data_format" then for the updates"windows_fastboot_update_rom.bat".

I know that It was clean installation. On stock with MIUI 13 I had the same problems.
I'm now on version 13.0.9, jumped to this version from 12, clean installation. What I'm finding is Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turnoff around 23:30 each night, this seems to be some deliberate power saving function when the phone detects the person is likely asleep, and I can see in my access point log exactly when Wi-Fi disassociates and turns off, only turning on again in the morning when I unlock the phone. This may be related to having DND turned on using the schedule option, this is set from 22:00, but I have this set to still be disturbed by my contacts, so need Wi-Fi to remain connected. This all worked fine on version 12.
I can't see any settings under Wi-Fi or battery management to disable this. Anyone else seeing the same thing or have a solution?

Did some more Googling, found others having the exact same issue, see
https://www.reddit.com/r/miui/comments/tlxjjh
Appears to be a deliberate power saving feature, where the option to disable it, due to a bug or oversight, isn't available.
What is it with Xiaomi and their excessive battery saving modes.
wouldn't you find it under battery settings?

That appears to be the bug in that the options to disable it are missing. There are no settings anywhere to disable it.
