Note 5 LCD Screen interchangeable with Note 3 Screen? - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My note 5 has a damaged unresponsive screen, and i would like to still collect the media off of the device; i do not need to use the device after i back up the media off the device.
I do however have an old note 3, and my question is:
Can i temporarily connect the note 3 screen to the note 5 and proceed with the backup of the note 5?
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you are trying to swap motherboard from note5 into note3(because note 3 screen is attached to bezel/body), so no way to do it. I don't have the knowledge in repairing hardware but they are completely different hardwares, hence it looks impossible.

Note 4 stylus wont work on Note 3

Just played with a Note 4 and noticed the stylus won't work on the Note 3. Didn't try the other way round.
Any idea what they changed? I know they talk about tilt sensing.
Bit annoying as I regularly swap styluses between my Note 3 and Surface Pro (1)

All the styli (I have three) I had pre-Note 4 work on the Note 4. The Note 4's stylus works on my N10.1-14 and vice versa. I can't check my ex-Note 3 because it was traded-in. Setting that needs to be enabled/disabled maybe?

Take your stylus out of the Note 3 first. If it detects that the stylus is in the silo,it won't allow you to use another one.
At least that's how it's working on my note 2.[emoji1]

Interesting. Good to hear. Can't see what setting they would have changed though.
It was the same with the Note 3 stylus and Note 2. It makes sence. Ever year samsung a different Wacom digitizer and a new Super AMOLED screen.
I can confirm that Note 4 stylus work well on Note 3. Tested on N9002 and N900.
Note 3 , note 4 , note pro tab....
3 of spens works with each other including air command and button.....
There is no reason why the Note 4's S-Pen wouldn't work with your Note 3. Both devices utilize Wacom technology for their digitizers.

OK must have been because I didn't take the stylus out of my note 3!
Is it right the 4 can detect tilt of the stylus?
Surface pro pen also works on note 3/4.
They all work interchangeably..

I've only tried on the last two of the series i.e. note 3 and note 4.. But they should work on all with the same technology..
Is the tilting also working on note 3?
How does actually it work? new sensor on the pen or on the screen panel?
Sensor is on the panel, I think the pen itself is passive.

It works just fine. I just tried my friends Note 3 stylus on my Galaxy Note 4 and he tried my Galaxy Note 4 stylus on his Note 3. Both worked fine.

Switching Note 5 and Note 4 spens....

I like the clicky part of the Note 5 spen, so my question is can you store and use the Note 5 spen in the Note 4. Are they the same size? Wondering if someone has already done this without causing damage to either the phones or pens. Thanks.
No can do, they are different

Note 5 N920C received weird notification...

Hey guys, so I have the N920C but probably because I have a Note 7 ROM I received a notification saying that "I must return back my Note 7".
I know that this is not a problem if this stops here but what if Samsung does something like Nvidia did with the Shield?
If they start locking phones remotely could this be a problem for a Note 5 user that uses a Note 7 ROM like me?
What do you think? Thanks.

Sammy detected Note7 being active via the software. As long as they lock down via hardware-detection only (like how AOD doesn't work correctly) then you're OK.
Otherwise I would shoft back to non-Note7 rom lol.

Well, I think if I see some news about Samsung locking Note 7 phones via software I'll put the Note 5 Rom back sadly :c

Note 9 S Pen work on the Note 8

I was wondering if the New Note 9 S Pen will work and fit with the Note 8. I have a Note 8 and love it. From what I have read of the Note 9 specs, there is little need for me to upgrade.
Much larger battery
Slightly larger screen but same resolution
Better camera but its only better because of the updated software
More drive space
And an S Pen that (shoots freakin laser beams) has Bluetooth support
Those are great upgrades, but I do not feel like spending close to $1000 two years in a row. I kept the Note 7 S Pens when I returned the explosive phones multiple times in case I wanted backups. They work fine with the Note 8 even though their spec were supposed to be slightly upgraded. I would love it if I could get my hands on an Note 9 S Pen and be able to use it with my Note 8 without having to buy a whole new phone. I especially love the feature of taking a picture with the S Pen.
Does anybody have any thoughts or insight on this?
Looking at the Note 9 S-Pen I doubt all the functionalities will work with the N8, like the S-Pen charging or even working as a Bluetooth device as with the N9. It may not even fit.

it need be charged. i guess it cant be full working on note 8. when it was low/out of battery, it would become note 8 spen?
Find a way to charge the pen and I don't see why we can't use it with a note 8

Yeah another poster said the new pen is longer than the one on the Note 8 so it may not fit or might stick out.
It would probably work as a normal S-Pen. But without the bluetooth functions.
I have tested on both the Note 8 and Note 9. They won't work with each other. The Note 9's S Pen can't do anything on the Note 8' screen, even it's just a little touch or swipe.
Thanks for the feedback. That is a little disappointing but I guess I can wait. Samsung upgrades their phones just a little bit every year with just one great new feature to get me to consider the upgrade. Smart business plan. I wonder is a third party S Pen with Bluetooth will be developed to work with Note 8. That would be rad.

That's not right, I tried it at a Samsung store a couple days ago and it worked just fine as a plain EMR pen. I couldn't test fit since the pen was in a holder though.
Charging the pen capacitor likely won't work on a note 8, but it'll still work as a normal wacom pen.
The note 9 pen is bigger. It doesn't fit in the note 8
This is a really dumb question. You think samsung would allow note 8 users to use the note 9 pen... theres a whole reason why they're pushing the note 9. It's not even the same internals anymore.

Not a dumb question and apparently it does work (but won't charge or fit in note 8 of course).

Lol in terms of being able to use it as a stylus I'm sure it works fine. The whole point of that note 9 pen is for the functions... if you can't charge the pen or fit it back into the phone wouldn't you say its supposed to be meant for the Note 9. It's a dumb question ...

Of course the note 9 pen is meant for the note 9 lol, no one is questioning that . OP's question did lead to the clarifications on the level of interchangability between the note 8 and note 9 pens, which some found helpful. If you think it's dumb, well, thanks for telling us how you feel! Otherwise, I don't see any added value there... Moving on [emoji41]

There's actually a battery saving option on the Note phones that lets you turn off the S-Pen touch detection while the stylus is inside the phone. I noticed this as well at a store where the Note 8 pen didnt work on my Note 4 until I took out the pen from my Note 4. The option also exists on the Note 8. When you turn the option it off you can use your extra S-Pen's while the original is still inside the phone (I believe it's turned off by default actually, not sure though)
need to appear smart?

That is a really dumb answer. I could say for example newer MS surface pens are working on older devices; so why not asking if the newer note pen works on older devices. But that is not my point. The point is rather that your need to appear smart by degrading others.

Never tried to "appear" to look smart. Just stating something that's obvious. I don't see why the pen wouldn't work in terms of navigating through the phone with the actual touch of the stylus. The functionalities obvs wouldnt work. Anyways I'm moving on. Peace.

Point taken. For some this is a learned behavior. Still, it is emotional abuse. I would watch that kind of language. This is a great community. It would be even sad to lose someone to emotional abuse or harassment. Make no mistake. It will not be tolerated. Take the high road. Be the better person. Peace.

Does note 9 s pen fits in silo of note 9

So my note 9 pen damaged I don't want to spend a huge amount of money on a new one, I found that the the note 8 pen is pretty cheap I was wondering whether it will fit in the silo. also other than Bluetooth connectivity are there any difference between the two?
Note 9 pen is slightly larger than the Note 8 one - size wise yes, it will fit, but it will likely be loose and fall out unless held in by something.
I know for a fact that the Note 9's S-Pen fits in the Note 8. So the Note 8's S-Pen should fit in the Note 9 without any issues. As you have stated the only differences between the two S-Pen's is that the Note 9 has Bluetooth features. Otherwise they are both function the exact same
I have the spare note 8 S pen and it won't work with my note 9. Not sure if it's a bluetooth thing picking up the 9 pen but either way my little test didn't work. Could be doing something wrong but might be worth testing out before spending money and it not work.

Check your S-pen settings. There is one that allows multiple pens to work. I believe it is off by default...
Have the Notes 8, 9 & 10+, S-pen from each works on all...
older model spen will not work on newer models. I have tried that. Like my note 3 note 4 pen did not work on note 9. but note 9 pen worked on note 3 and note 4. same is the case with note 8. You can use note 9 pen on note 8 but not opposite. sorry for my bad english. hope it will help.

Bulldust... As I said above, Note 8 S-pen works on Note 9 and 10+... And vice versa...
I also have the ORIGINAL NOTE from waaaay back and that S-pen ALSO works on ALL the models listed...
The base tech HAS NOT CHANGED...
Check you settings for the S-pen as there is a setting to use multiple S-pens that must be turned on otherwise, if an S-pen is docked and you try to use another S-pen, the touches won't register...
The ONLY thing that won't work is, of course, the bluetooth stuff as the older models didn't have this...
Long story short, S-pen from any Note series phone WILL work on any other Note AS LONG AS THAT PESKY SETTING IS CHANGED...
Anyone who says different is wrong unless talking about the bluetooth part. That is hardware and model specific...
It means they haven't looked at the S-pen settings and changed it.

I did look and didn't like the battery warning. I also left the 9 pen in the other room. Could be a counterfeit note8 pen. Like I said spare.
Thanks for the info. It's good to know. Will see what happens when I change the settings and test that pen. Guessing I bought it off Amazon lol.

Shouldn't matter as long as it has the wacom tech like an original S-pen... I have a heap of cheap 3rd party s-pens lying around I bought for the 9 a long time ago on ebay. They all work but as they don't have the bluetooth part that of course doesn't work on the 9 and 10+.
I also have a note 10.1, 10.1(2014 edition) and a Tab S4. These pens are also interchangeable...
Cheers guys...
Should also note, if the original S-pen is removed from the phone, ANY S-pen should work whether the setting is for multiple or not... If you are trying out the S-pen with your original in the phone it is detected and the 2nd pen won't work. Try removing your original pen and try with the replacement. It will also work. No need to change setting then and worry about battery warning...
