Screen brightness problem - Galaxy S 4 Active Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As of today, for no apparent reason, I cannot change the screen brightness. It always goes back to 49%. No matter if I decrease it or increase it, or even activate auto brightness, it always returns to 49% when I open any app. What should I do to fix this?
Today, I updated the SuperSU app and its binaries, I thought that this was a problem, however, when I uninstall SuperSU or install previous version that was installed, the problem with brightness remains.
My phone is i9295, with stock Android 4.4.2

Never mind, I figured it out.

[Q] Auto brightness not working in v30b?

I am on stock V30B flashed with SmartFlash.
Whenever the phone reboots, the display settings are reverted to 100% brightness and 2min timeout.
Hard-resetting phone does not help. I also noticed that the brightness level changes a few seconds after the phone boots.
I attempted to search for related issues, but the only thread about this is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=39182640&postcount=376.
Can someone confirm if it's a bug or something's wrong with my phone?
Worked fine for me when I was on V30B. :good:

[Q] Unknown App Flashing When Toggling Wifi

Last night I was at home and noticed my wifi wasn't on, so I used the quick settings in the shade to toggle it. After a few seconds, wifi connected, and some unknown app took focus and closed repeatedly. After a few moments, it stopped and all was well.
I thought it was strange, so I turned wifi back off and the same thing happened. I rebooted, tried again, and got the same result. I was trying to think of a way to see what was happening, so I tried using the Screen Record function in Gravity Box, which didn't help much, because it happens so fast, and no info is displayed, just a black window that goes away quickly.
I then turned on the CPU usage in Developer Options to see if anything consistently came to the top when toggling. I saw a few apps each time Plume (Twitter), and Maildroid (email) were two of them. Both of these apps behave differently on wifi and 3G/4G (push vs. pull), so thought -maybe- it could be something with that. I uninstalled both of those, rebooted and tried again, getting the same result.
I recorded the screen when this was happening with the CPU usage displayed, and was wondering if anyone has any ideas? I don't really want to uninstall and reinstall EVERY app on my phone, so I was hoping someone may have seen this before or see something I'm missing when watching it happen.

Thanks for any input anyone can offer!
Do you check virus from your phone ?
I am also having this, seems to be due to 4.4.2 OTA, which I continue to delay as I am rooted.
Mine doens't only happen with wifi change, but also just randomly when using hangouts, keyboard stays out but hangouts min -> maxes quickly. I have tried freezing the update apps but it apparently didn't do anything as I was still asked to update earlier.
Only hangouts? I have that app disabled.in the app settings.
I can't say for sure that being on 4.4.2 fixed it, but I am on 4.4.2 now and it is not happening anymore.
I unlocked my bootloader and did the 4.4.2 SBF, unlocked and rooted. I installed probably 99% of the same apps (only ditched 1-2 that I never used anymore) and I am not having the flashing issue anymore.
Hard to tell for certain if the pending OTA was the cause, but it may have been.

[Q] Ambient display failure

It worked when I first booted up. After a few hours it quit. I did a factory reset, and the same thing happened. I then went through my running apps and turned them off until none were running except the system apps. Still didn't work.
Anyone else have this happen that can suggest a fix? If I have to reset and install apps one by one, how do I do that, since on signing into Google the apps auto load

To fix auto load, you can change the system setting to not backup apps; it's in Settings > Backup & reset. I thought upon initial Google account sign in you could switch that setting off too, and that prevents the apps from auto-installing. I have backup turned off because on previous devices and versions of Android it was contributing to battery drain.

I did what you suggested, adding single apps and confirming the ambient function worked. Found an app that seemed to be the cause, and upon uninstalling it the ambient function came on line. However, about a half hour later, it stopped working again. Spent over an hour on the phone with Moto, and they figured out that ambient doesn't respond unless the phone has been asleep more than 10 seconds. That seemed to work for me. So I did my 4th reset/install of the day, and again, it worked for a while, even with all my apps (including the one that seemed to be the cause in the first place). And then, it stopped again.
I searched, and one suggestion was that ambient won't work unless you have a locked screen. I usually don't use a lock, but what the hey, I'll try it. Set up a pattern unlock and (wait for it.........).
Nope.
I'm stumped.......
Mine seems to stop displaying the ambient as well. It will display a few times initially and then stops. I don't know if it extends its sleep period after every interval or not. Also seems like if you lift up your phone to look at your ambient notifications, that disables any repeat display too

Screen rotation problem

Has anyone else had problems with auto screen rotation, mine has twice now in 4 days started either getting stuck in landscape mode or would start rotating back and forth by itself,I fixed it for now by clearing cache, but curious if anyone else has had this issue.
I have the same problem on 910c variant, even factory reset does nothing, I hope it is not a faulty hardware
Ditto on my 910T3 TMo. Stock rooted. Auto screen rotate stopped working 2 days ago.
I have wiped cache and dalvik.
I have tested sensors with other apps (they work).
I have run self tests (dial *#0*#)
I disabled all Xposed modules
I tried 3rd party screen rotation app
None of these have resolved the problem.
Also tried wiping Dalvik and cache and reflashing the kernel.
That didn't fix the issue either.
the problem seems to happen when the phone is hot, because when I wake up In the morning I turn it on and doesn't have the problem
I have the same exact issue. I've replaced my phone 3 times because of it. BTW I'm on 910T.
Hopefully this new software update that just rolled out fixes this issue.
I also noticed when in the camera app, if i rotate the phone between portrait and landscape, the controls on the screen rotate appropriately.
So again, that verifies the sensors are working and it isn't a hardware issue for me.
Also tried using stock launcher, but no change.
Am about ready for a factory reset.
I've experienced this also but I thought/think it was a Nova launcher bug that seems to have corrected itself.
Since the recent update everything has been running fine. So far I haven't gotten the screen rotation issue!
It used to happen at least 2 times a day. I think it might just be a software based issue.
SM-N910T still on 5.0.1 stock having the same issues. It gets stuck in landscape, stays stuck in over landscape position.
I ended up doing a factory wipe and updating to the stock rooted DOK2 rom that just came out.
So far no issues and screen rotation is working (along with several other nuisance issues that went away).
Just as an update I lost screen rotation on DOK2 stock rooted ROM. However, I believe it may have been related to some debloat cleanup I was doing.
Under Ti Backup I searched for "facebook" and manually forced uninstall of the 4 "system" apps that came up.
I don't know what any of those would have to do with screen rotation, but one of them does.
I was not able to successfully restore those files via Ti Backup either, so ended up dirty flashing the same DOK2 zip file to restore them.
That fixed it. So rather than forcing uninstall of those files I just removed updates and disabled them via the android app manager.
So far so good.

Always on display clock freezing on android 11.

Does anyone else have the problem where the clock on the always on display is not showing the correct time (it stays frozen until you turn on and off the display)? It happened after updating to Android 11.
Same here. On the Dutch IT-site tweakers.nl it is also mentioned several times.
I did a clean factory reset (thus without restoring a backup). This does not help.

Mine work perfectly after the update
Use smart activation and it won't freeze anymore
Thanks for the suggestion but I really want to have it stay on all the time and not freezing the clock and the AOD icons.
They rolled a big update but the bug with the Always on display still occurs they did fix the app switcher bug though
