Well i'm happy with a setup i've just done. Using my X Mini portable speakers I get a very loud speaker, with high quality. If anyone else cannot be bothered/cannot figure out how to fix HDMI, these are probably better than my Tv's speakers anyways. And there only £12 =D
Also, YATSE remote for android allows me to control it despite not having CEC!

Hello, I haven't seen much on Raspbmc on XDa, but its a great little OS. With overclocking controls (much like yuo might get on android) and XBMC booting by default for the professional look =D
Anyway, I haven't been able to get any sound out of the HDMI. I know that sound output can work (on a different OS, like raspbian). Also, i noticed that the HDMI control (ie using TV remote to control it) doesn't work.
Any ideas? Anyone else using PI?
(also, have tried loads of configurations in audio, now i'm stuck)

I've been using raspbmc since I got my first pi and haven't had those problems. However the last iteration of rc5 did have issues with cec which would explain why your remote wouldn't work if your not on the absolute latest. As far as sound only issues I've heard about is with people using external stereo for sound. Disable DTS if your using your tv. With the latest versions be careful with overclocking, there's currently a problem in the build that is causing SD card corruption for a lot of users.

Check out xbian.org its a xbmc build for the rpi that works great. My remote for my LG tv works great and same for sound, no issues. Has oc control as well. It does freeze up every few days but that's my only issue with it

I know that sound has worked on XBMC, i remember when i first got it i tried it breifly, im gonna try with headphone port and see if i get sound. Even if I do, i'd like to use the HDMI output, rather than headphones/portablespeakers.
Any clues?

Headphones working fine... i'm not sure whether that is a good thing or a bad thing...
(im testing using a few different sound sources, not just one, os i doubt this is any Program errors. It must be the system. Are there any drivers i can download for a samsung TV?)
Also, i might try on a different TV and see if it's just the tv?!

I see that no one has commented on this in a while, so I hope that the thread is not dead. When I hook up my Raspbmc to my TV through my Denon receiver, I get picture, but no sound. I added the two lines of code to the config file mentioned on the Pi forums that supposedly force HDMI. When I go into audio settings, however, I don't even seem to have an HDMI option. The only options are Analog and Coax.
Thoughts?

I had this problem too when I got a Raspberry Pi a week ago, with a Samsung UN32EH4000 (I don't think the TV has CEC, if that matters). Tried all the recommended solutions, but never had the HDMI choice for the sound even. Went to Xbian and had no problems.

I have given up on Raspbmc, and even xbian as I have found they don't work well, for me.
I did like Arch linux, but had problems had memory problems.
I have had memory problems on all of the distros tried, I think it might be a hardware problem (after a successful boot or two it forgets how to turn on and just fails)
Oh well :L Gonna try raspbian for a bit and see if i get anywhere.

I was able to fix this by adding "hdmi_force_hotplug=1" and "hdmi_drive=2" to my Config file. I also went pure Raspbmc. You can install XBMC from Raspian, but since my goal was a media extender, I just installed Raspbmc. Wait for everything to settle, turn off the Pi, put the SD card in your PC, open up config.txt, and copy those two lines of code.
Make sure when you edit the config file on a pc, if using windows. Use notepad+ as windows will not properly format the file using utf-8 with standard notepad.

Also... make sure you're using a quality dependable power supply that actually puts out 5V and at least 700mA, I use an Amazon Kindle Fire 2.1A charger just for the headroom.
The easiest way to check is to have the Pi plugged in and on, and check voltage on the board directly with a test meter. If you don't get the correct values, try a different power supply.
So just a quick review of the NETGEAR Push2TV Wireless Display Adapter PTV3000 I just bought. Got it for a bit under $60 USD from Amazon. Did the firmware update at work before coming home -- didn't even have a TV to connect it to there! You do the update from a PC over Wifi and web interface. Now, I first tried to update the firmware from a Mac laptop I had lying around but couldn't. I could bring up the update page, but when I browsed for a file, I couldn't pick it! Tried both Safari and Chrome... Either way, just used a Windows laptop and IE 9 and the update worked fine.
Anyway, at home plugged it into my TV, picked up my Note 10.1 tablet and it works great. With the latest firmware on the Netgear, connection speed is pretty quick -- a few seconds. Video from my Note 10.1 was slightly letter boxed due to the 1280x800 resolution of the tablet ... but when you played video it would go full screen. When playing video, any on screen graphics do no show up on the TV at all. Also, on the Note 10.1 when playing video through it, you do not see video on the tablet anymore. Just black where it should be. This is fine (IMHO) ....
When using the UI of the tablet, the speed on the tablet felt unaffected (butter smooth in other words) but on the TV it was maybe running at 30fps. You could see some flight artifacting but I was sitting very close to my 52" LCD.... Text was totally readable and it looked just as good as Airplay does on the Mac.
NOW, I cannot test with my phone. Why? Well, I didn't know this, but when I tried to connect, it would connect, but after about 10 seconds disconnect. On my TV it would say HDCP Connection Error (or something along those lines.) After a little reading, turned out because my phone is rooted and has a flash count of 1 and System Status: Modified, you cannot use AllShare Cast! That is crap if you ask me, but it's how Samsung set it up.
I tried flashing stock recovery and then using Triangle Away, but the phone still says "Modified" and that sets the count back to 1. Pretty lame ... I am on a stock rom/kernel and now recovery, but something is flipping the status. I'm sure if I flashed back to 100% stock it would work fine, just like it does on my bone stock tablet .....
Honestly, this is a real bummer to me as I was excited at how well it worked with the tablet and for travelling, this tiny little box would be great for using in hotel rooms.
Oh I didn't mention, the size of it is very small -- like a deck of cards, and very light. Also it has a Mini_USB input (not Micro) and while the power adapter is 5v/1amp, it says when you turn it on you can easily power it from the USB port on a TV. Very handy.
So to sum it up:
Stock phone with unmodified system status? Get it. Cheaper than Samsung AllCast dongle and more functional because it supports Miracast (Sony Xperia, Nexus 4, some LG phones) and also Intel WiDi so basically all the current crop of Windows 7 and 8 laptops running with 3rd gen intel processors.
Modified phone like me? Better stick to the MHL HDMI adapter and you will have to get up to walk to your phone to switch the video or buy a long HDMI cable.

Recently, i bought the Raspberry Pi Camera Board v1.3 and hooked it up to my Raspberry Pi, because i wanted to make a livestreaming (web) camera.
Many tutorials are advising me to use ''Motion'', but this simply DOESN'T work, and i'll tell you what:
I installed everything following every single detail on installing Motion for the Raspberry Pi and it's costum camera, but when i go to my Raspberry Pi's IP address and add :8081 or :8080 my browser simply does NOT find the page ''this page does not exist'', but just going to :80 works fine, and i can ping, SSH, and FTP it normally.
After reflashing my SD-card and installing Raspbian like a hundred times it only worked ONCE, but for just 3 seconds! after that it failed again.
So because Motion is a piece of crap i tried other livestreaming stuff like MJPEG and MJPG, but it's storing like 10 pictures every second on my SD-card, if i would continue using that software my SD-card would die/wear-out within a few weeks, so that's not going to be it too.
I also tried using a simple command line together with VLC so i can watch it from there, but the problem is that you cannot set the FPS any lower than 24, i need to do that because streaming 1080p 24 FPS via a raspberry outside your local IP causes it to lag (because the RPI cannot handle the bandwith?) and setting the camera to anything lower than 24 FPS causes huge lag too (looks like the camera doesn't support it?).
So what now? how can i make a simple HD with 2-5 FPS livestream via web with a Raspberry Pi? should i buy a simple USB Logitech webcam? what other software can i use?

This is my first post on XDA Dev.
I bought a Chromecast last week and plugged it in and set it all up. So far I am well impressed with it except for 1 thing. When I go to cast from YouTube either via my phone, tablet or laptop to my TV it sounds like the people are under water. When I cast my chrome browser tab with YouTube loaded and enlarge the video it sounds perfect.
I just cant quite get my head around why its doing this. All other apps like BBC iPlayer work a charm with no problems whatsoever.
I've powered things down, tried to plug into different HDMI ports, tried different power sockets and USB ports but still it's the same.
Any ideas chaps?

I have reset the thing numerous times from using the button to using my phone and laptop. Still no joy.
Does the chromecast depend on certain TV drivers / firmware? I must admit I have never updated my TV since getting it and do not even know if there are any new downloads for it to be honest.
The TV I have is a Samsung UE55B7000 and the firmware that I am using is T-CHU7DEUC-2009.0 (so quite old)

Hello guys, I'm planning to build my first carputer. 2 years ago I have modified a tablet, Asus zenpad 8, very similar to Nexus 7 in my opinion. Now I want something more.
What I want:
Fully automated pc that works exactly like an android head unit but much better and more flexibility when it comes to external devices like an external DAC with optical output. Actually this is the main reason for not buying an android head unit, didn't find one that works very well with an external DAC. Some other things that I want from this carputer: the compatibility with steering wheel controls, backup camera, fm or even DAB radio, gps, phone calls( via bluetooth), 4G internet and so on. Many of those things are pretty simple to integrate, will talk about them later.
The components:
1. The pc - didn't think about it yet because there are loads of mini pc on the market for good prices. The only problem I'm thinking is the start up on ignition. First I wanted to go for a Remix mini pc but I don't know how could I make it start on ignition and after that automatically play the last song. If I would go for a normal PC, I found a smart PSU which has the possibility of ignition start and stop and puts the computer in sleep mode. That way I will avoid the waiting time for the boot, in fact the computer will be permanently turned on. The only problem I can think of, is the compatibility of this PSU with the android Remix OS. Is it possible?
I've tested the Remix OS and I like it, very quiq, easy to use in car with a touch screen, support all the external devices( wifi, 4g, fm and DAB, external DAC with optical output) and the launcher can be changed. I know I can opt for Windows OS and that way I will be sure that the PSU works but in my opinion windows is not so "mobile friendly", not so easy to use in car.
2. The screen: not so many to talk about, found on ebay some 9" tft touch screens, very good resolution, hdmi connectivity and USB for touch. The best thing with these screens is the AV2 input for the backup camera. The screen automatically switch to this input, has guidance lines, and this way I solved the problem with the camera. And also is quite cheap.
3. Steering wheel controls. Found on ebay the Joycon steering wheel adapter that is compatible with Android. I just have to make an initial configuration and that's it, nothing more, simply works through USB.
4. The other external devices: all of them can be found on ebay for good prices. The only thing that worries me is the bluetooth compatibility. I remember when I built that Asus zenpad tablet, I couldn't find a solution for this. Now my question is, what type of bluetooth adapter should I buy and how do I integrate this in the carputer. And I'm not talking about physical connection, I think I will need some kind of software, app, that knows what to do with this bluetooth adapter.
So, in the end, I would need some help regarding the ignition start, just the hardware part of it, all the other automatic things (launch the app and play the song) can be made with tasker very easy. Also I would need some help with the bluetooth phone calls.
Hope I didn't miss any important thing and I will appreciate any help. Thanks.

Have you thought about using a rock 64 single board computer like a Raspberry Pi that Android is really supported something like that could work really well as it has gpio outputs for various functions USB inputs for audio dacs and DAB radio and can work with touch screens or even projectors for heads up.
The truth is I know nothing about raspberry pi, heard about them but nothing more. Can you please explain a bit more? Is it possible to make it automatically turn on/off on ignition? How? Apparently that's the hardest part of the job. I've read on the internet that Remix OS doesn't work very well with stand-by function and if I'll make it to shut down completely, I'm afraid that will take too long to boot back. I was thinking about Remix mini pc and a controller that simulates pressing of the on/off button simultaneously with the ignition but it has to be tested.
So, quickly searched on google about raspberry pi and banana pi possibilities, there are some power supplies for in car use, basically they simulate a shut down from the button with a delay. That looks very good, very easy to do and also very cheap. But, how fast can boot a raspberry or banana pi running Remix OS? Does anyone know?

To make it turn off and on with the ignition, just plug it into a 12v line that is powered when ignition is on. Generally the 12v line to your head unit fits that criteria. If you want constant power to keep the device in standby mode, you can connect a relay to an a wire that is powered when the car is powered, then use the relay to short the pins of the standby button.
For boot time, you can achieve quite a bit of improvement by getting the fastest sdcard you can buy.
Thanks for advice. I've searched on youtube how android works with raspberry pi and in my opinion they don't do it very well, I mean it struggles even on youtube playing videos. So, I bought an ssd hdd, 32gb and made some tests on my pc. Found a version of android 7 special made for in car use and I'm quite happy with it until now. This android has a "special" feature, when the power button is pressed the pc shut down without displaying any confirmation message on screen. That means it will work perfectly with an intelligent power supply like m2-atx, m3-atx etc. In the next few days I'll get a new pc, micro atx mainboard so I'll begin the tests on that. Until now I've got a boot time around 30-40 seconds. Is not a bad time but I'll try to remove the unnecessary apps from startup and see what happens then. I'll post some pictures or even videos when I'll have good results. Any advice is welcome. Thanks.

I think you didn't read, I couldn't find any that works with an external sound card(DAC). My audio system is quite expensive, made for sound quality, and of course I want the head unit to be as good as possible. An external sound card with optical output I think is the best you can get.
Google search "raspberry pi alternative" theres lots of these little gadgets now adays, raspberry pi 3B is one of the most popular ( and cheapest) but there are more out there that are more powerful & better hardware.. The ASUS Tinkerboard is becoming popular as well I think I may be getting one for a streaming machine.
I've already purchased the PC and ordered the PSU. The price for all those components(+ a 30gb ssd) was under 100£ so not very expensive. Why I went for a pc instead of a single board pc? I don't know, maybe because I have no previous experience with them. Yes is true that is way much bigger than a raspberry alternative and the power consumption as well but I don't mind, maybe in the future when I'll get bored again I will try one of those pc's.
So, I've tried to install the Android X86 64bit (there is one version on internet with a patch that removes the confirmation message when you want to shut it down) on this pc with no success, all I've got was a black screen or a continuous reboot. Found out that Android X86 64bit is not so friendly with AMD cpu's. Should've search for that before buying it. Anyway, tried the 32bit version so that one works very well but I didn't find any with that patch installed. How can I remove that confirmation message when the power button is pressed?
