Last night I picked up the Note 3 to replace my original Note i717. I’ve rooted it with designgears’ root. So I’m currently running into a few issues that I’m hoping some of you might have some suggestions on.
1) The note 1 had five icons per row in the home screen, now despite about a third more horizontal pixels, we have 4, and it looks like fewer vertically too. This needs to change. It sounds like there is no way to do this without hacking around...
Should this work? It's for the S3 though, and I worry that things may have changed since then.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2221124
Solved, using modified T-Mo SecLauncher4.apk installed per: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=46635711&postcount=26
2) On the note, it would show that I had text messages or missed calls on the lock screen, and I could swipe to unlock starting from those to go strait to the new message or missed calls. Now I see that I have messages, but I can't seem go directly to it like I could before. How can I get that feature back? From what I've seen so far, I liked the old lock screen better. I don't really know what it's doing with that top part of the lock screen - I may be missing some key insight here.
3) The notification bar is cluttered up with a keyboard icon, "select input method". How do I get rid of this? I know how to select a keyboard, thankyouverymuch.
Wanam/Xposed does it
4) WTF is my magazine? What does it do? Do I want it?
Samsung bloat, but said to cause problems when disabled.
5) How can I make it stop connecting to AT&T Wi-Fi "hotspots", without turning off Wi-Fi entirely? It automatically connects to them, using them instead of the perfectly good 4G signal. This would be fine if they worked, but unfortunately most of them have no connectivity behind them, so internet access just stops when in range if one with Wi-Fi enabled. I know I fixed this before in the note, but I forget how.
Settings -> Wifi -> Advanced, uncheck the obvious option
6) There is an eye in the notification bar. Sometimes it is white, other times it's dimmed. What is this conveying to me? Is this the samsung eye-tracking thing to make it not turn off the screen while looking at it? If so, does it only think i'm looking at it when the eye is white? If so, it's not doing a very good job, because i've seen the white eye only a couple of times for a few seconds at a times.
I was right, and it can be disabled, or Wanam can hide the notification
7) Has anyone had any luck removing the AT&T logo from the back cover without trashing the finish? Maybe acetone? What kind of plastic is it, anyway? It feels like polyethylene or polypropylene from the outside, but the inside feels like something harder than that, so I don’t know.
8) The stupid physical home button activates the screen! Is there a way to wipe the bottom of the screen with the phone on without accidentally unlocking it, short of carrying q-tips around to neatly clean around the stupid physical home button?
Wanam/Xposed can disable unlock on home.
New Question:
9) That really annoying bug where it gets stuck in EDGE mode is still here. If you try to use the internet at exactly the wrong time while leaving a dead-spot (happens a lot with subways in boston), your data connection gets stuck in EDGE, and stays there, potentially for a long time. Rebooting or toggling airplane mode fixes it... but isn't this a pain for everyone who lives around a subway system? How do others deal with this?
10) The package contained a small plastic baggie, containing a small tool made from a strip of metal, about 1 inch long, and an even smaller bag with 5 thin black rods about 3/4ths of an inch long. What are these?
Replacement S-Pen tips, and a tool for replacing them.
Thanks
I don't know all the answers but ill try
1)I think that's a DPI issue at least partially. Root it,install Xposed and the App Settings app.
2)go to settings, device, lock screen to enable lock screen widgets
3)not sure. Xposed might be your friend here
4)more Samsung bloatware. I don't use it.
5)I believe you can turn this off in the wifi settings

Probably not, but from what I've read, freezing it causes problems with email. One thing you can do is to go into the app, press menu, select settings, and uncheck the box that says "open using the home key." That will at least stop that annoyance.

Under settings, wifi, advanced, you uncheck the box that says connect automatically to AT&T wifi.

Correct. I find this feature worthless and have disabled it on my various Galaxy devices.
(Questions not resolved highlighted in orange)
1) Thanks - I have Xposed + Wanam, but it doesn't seem that they allow me to change the number of icons in the grids. I'm studying the dimens.xml and integers.xml - Trying to figure out what everything there means. I think i'm gonna be able to get 6 decently sized vertical rows in... but I need to make sure I know what I'm doing, and don't screw something up.
There is a SecLauncher4.apk and SecLauncher4.odex in the /system/app directory - I've decompiled the .apk, and know how to recompile it - but I'm a little unsure of what the presence of the odex file means in terms of where to go from there.
2) The issue isn't that there's no widget, it's that the widget that's there sucks. Before (on the original note), I could in one motion swipe (in any direction) from the message icon or widget or whatever you'd call it on the lock screen, and land at the new message. Now it seems like I have to tap the messages notification and then swipe in the box beneath it, which requires considerably more dexterity to do with one hand than just swiping away from the widget like I could do before.
3) Wanam does it.
4) Got it! sounds worthless. Actually, might be possible to defang in SecLauncher4.apk - it's got a lot of options related to the magazine.
5) Thanks, got it.
6) Okay, cool. It actually seems to be better than useless, so I'm gonna leave it on for now (until it does something that pisses me off, at least). Wanam can hide the eye if I tell it to, which I probably will.
8) Wanam can fix this.

Thanks, found info on using the T-Mo files on AT&T Note 3 - see link in OP.
My S5 seems to be possessed. Its not rooted (cant anyway) no rom, have done absolutely nothing out of the ordinary to the phone other then install my normal apps from the play store.
Yet the phone is constantly, about 20x a day just going to the 'call logs' screen. I've rebooted the phone, logged in and with nothing open poof call logs. It seems to happen more when my fingers are hovering near but not touching the screen, is there some sort of air gesture for call logs that I dont know about ? Its never any other screen, its not like its accidentally hitting the 'back' button. It is starting to get a bit annoying ..
I notice mine opens apps "on its own". Not sure if its a gestures or hover thing or what. Usually gallery or phone, which are right next to each other on my home screen (all the way left). Must have something to do with it.

YES!!! My Rogers (SM-G900W8) does it too! I thought it was probably because I installed something, but, now that I see you have the issue !!
I posted this same question in the Q&A section regarding the call logs. Ultimately , I factory reset my phone. That fixed whatever the problem was. It was annoying the crap out of me.

I found the problem, it was my galaxy gear 2, every time it 'checked' my phone for new messages it would leave the phone on the call log. I turned off the option to open content on my phone from my gear and all is well now !
I have been experiencing this issue since upgrading to Lollipop on my S5. I too have a Galaxy Gear 2. I have just disabled 'Smart Relay' in the Gear App (which is what I presume you were referring to) and so far all seems good Thanks.
I have the S6 Active (SM-G890A). I'm coming from a s4, both AT&T. Here is the issue. With the new phone I have a hard time getting back to the keyboard after using voice text. In the past I could quickly press X and get back to where you could edit the text with the keyboard but with the new S6A, it very sluggish and sometimes completely unresponsive. I have to tap it several times. I'll attach a screen shot. Anyone else noticed this? Or better yet found a fix? I installed a new keyboard and still had the issue.
I tried a few keyboards and didn't like any of them. I keep going back to the Google keyboard. I don't have any issues with it on the Active.

Only thing I've noticed is even with Auto rightness off the screen still dims itself ever so slightly when you leave a lighted area and go to a darker area, I'm assuming it's the blue light filter....Even though I have that option turned off.

Only issue I've had is a daily "Android System has stopped" popup, but it's pretty uneventful. Nothing crashes, phone doesn't restart. Just hit "ok" and go about my business. I assume it's related to the disabled package list I've carried over from MM.

Hi Norbarb,
Last weekend, I was on QA4 then I Odin'd back to APK1 and took the Official ATT OTA update to Nougat 7.0.
I just tested screen mirroring and it worked without any problems. Sorry, I don't have a Samsung BluRay to test.
Now the issue that I've been having is reboots. In the beginning, when I was first on N7.0 I had no problems whatsoever for a few days.
- On Feb. 20th, I kept getting a message that one of my apps unexpectedly closed. Now this app is old and wasn't even supported on MM (it's called Webcams widget) but it had worked flawlessly on MM and Nougat QA4.
- Then on Feb. 21st I had a couple of reboots happen, I went into a solid Bootloop that started in the afternoon and kept rebooting for around 10-15 times! It stopped long enough for me to actually Power Off my S7E down in the normal manner and I left it that way for around 5 minutes.
- I searched for solutions and finally ended up clearing the Cache Partition like this:
Wipe cache partition
Turn off the device.
Press and hold the Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key at the same time.
When the phone powers on, the Android System Recovery screen appears approx. 30 seconds later.
Release all of the keys.
Press the Volume down key to highlight "wipe cache partition."
Press the Power key to select.
Press the Volume down key to highlight “yes” and press thePower key to select.
When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
Press the Power key to restart the device.
My phone went without a reboot for almost 2 days then yesterday afternoon I had one single reboot. My next test (if needed) will be to clear each app cache/data. Unless it gets really, really bad again, only then will I resort to a complete reset.
The only difference between using my phone on the official QA6 and the sideloaded QA4 is that I had turned off auto-updating for my Play Store apps when on QA4 (and earlier). I had a lot of updates occur when updating to QA6.
Doing more research today, I found an article talking about some common Nougat problems and possible fixes here.

It help me with lot of problems. Just make backup using Samsung Cloud and after factory reset using restore from Samsung cloud you will have 97% all of you settings and apps back. It is wort to do it.
Actually I just took a guess and re-enabled com.qualcomm.atfwd. I don't have a wifi display BUT I haven't gotten "Android System has stopped" since I turned it back on. This was never an issue on MM. If it happens again I'll try a few more packages related to Android System before a factory reset.

Package Disabler Pro. It's the only one that currently works in Nougat as far as I know.
I switched to OnePlus 3T today, and here are few observations guys...
Compared to Nougat on S7E... different level of speed and responsiveness, way different.
I used CM and AOSP roms in the past, on different phones, I know they fast, but this... speed demon out of the box, with MM or Nougat.
Feel bad for leaving S7E forums, but believe me guys, it is a flagship killer indeed. Unbelievable.
I will go back to Sammy with S8 only if they will be able to keep up with this kind of speed, plain and simple.
I was hoping with every generation that Sammy will get rid of touchwiz lags... new phones and new chipsets were piling up, but it never changed, unfortunately.
Touch wiz nougat is a bloody mess next to 3T nougat...
Yes yes, I know. But I never used edge panels... or OOD that much.
Peace out guys!

I have this issue also, it keeps dimming constantly, and my blind self can't read it without manually turning up the brightness.
(Eye exam on Fri LOL)
Hello. My first post here. I have been lurking & reading for years.
I have a few of the minor issues that others have, like the colors will be washed out sometimes, pull down notifications are a bit harder to read. My main issue with this update is that my recently used apps will randomly close when the screen is locked & only keep 4 or 5 open. I want them to all stay open & I close the ones I no longer need. That is why I got this phone in the first place. Now apps that I need to go back to later & continue working are gone. Very annoying. I assumed it was a new performance setting activated without any explanation of how it will affect normal usage. I can't find where to change that particular setting, if it is changeable at all now.

Thanks for the tip. I tried that a few times. No change. Even added frequently used apps to be unmonitored. It is still closing all recently used apps, except the last 4 or 5. I just now turned off the app power monitor completely. It didn't change the estimated battery life hardly any. We'll see how that goes for a while.

Using the US unlocked variant, I haven't yet received the pie update. However, just reading around, I get the general impression that the update isn't that good (buggy, lost features).

I decided not to wait for Verizon Wireless to update my phone, and I saw a way to get it now on reddit so I pulled the trigger (go to https://firmware.science/ for instructions). It was brain dead simple.
Not sure what's supposed to be "buggy", because I have found zero issues - but then I've only had it a day now. Lost features? Not sure. Well, you can't set Performance mode any more in Device Maintenance (now called Device care), but I never changed it. And the Device Maintenance edge panel is gone, too. You can still get Battery, Memory, and Storage in settings. Also, you can schedule the phone run this automatically, now.
Night mode works (long as you're not using any theme). Battery life is impressive (lost less than 2% overnight). Edge panel icons are huge, now. Not a fan of that. At least Android Auto fully works... no more lost icon dock. That's the main reason I upgraded.
I mean, if you have examples of specifics where it's buggy or other lost functions, I'd be interested in what, but i can't complain so far.
Main issues for me
1. Multi window features are completely stripped down. No drag to popup, cant switch window positions without redoing the actions from scratch, etc.
2. Samsung Good lock customizations and routines are broken.
3. The interface is very erratic. Even Samsung apps with the interactive areas at the bottom still have the 3 dot menu at the top. Non Samsung apps anyway follow the old ui, so overall, its not that much of a benefit.
These were an integral part of my usage, so Pie is a disappointment for me at least.

Not that impressed so far; cannot add items to quick settings menu - you can only move around the existing icons.
Lots of things now require more tapping to get there, ie simple thing like checking batter usage now needs five steps: pull down on quick start menu>press settings>press device care>press battery>press battery usage.
Would be so much easier if you could just create a shortcut to this screen??
PIE/One UI just seems change for the sake of change. I've not seen any benefits yet.

I got Pie last week (AT&T - US) and so far I don't have any complaints. A few cosmetic things to get used to, head-up notifications are a bit different looking, but battery life is actually noticeably better.
I like it. Was apprehensive about this at first as was concerned at ruining decent battery life but this is darn good!

I have tried it several times and keep going back to Oreo. I got the official OTA (At&t) thinking the minor issue I had with bluetooth would be fixed. If I'm connected to bluetooth in car there is no alert if I get a text. This doesn't exist on Oreo. I know its minor but bugs me.

My only issue so far is that Pie seems to be forcing people to create duplicate threads here on XDA asking for people's opinions on Pie, even though there's already several Pie threads here. I hope Samsung squashes this bug soon.

Ha! I personally haven't seen them; they're usually beta impressions or threads for specific issues.

If you go in the Bluetooth Devices list, find the car Bluetooth, hit settings and make sure that both Call Audio and Media Audio are set to ON. You may have had Call Audio off if you experienced that behaviour.
