All in one Dock - Off-topic

Preface: forgive a noob for not finding a relevant subsection of XDA forums please, thank you.
I keep hearing/reading vapor-ware about how you'll be able to plug your phone into a dock of some sort and have it ~be~ your computer. I'm not aware of any solid product on the market yet, but how hard would it be?
Frankenstein something together, start with a USB2.0 (powered) hub.
Add a USB2.0 > DVI (or HDMI) adapter
USB Keyboard and Mouse
USB > Audio out
(USB > 10/100 ethernet?) nah your phone has wifi right?
Maybe a usb mem stick
Your phone or tablet would connect into this Frankenstein Dock and then we'd need the wizard overlords of XDA to pump out an apk that allows it all to work.
I got to thinking about this because I was fiddling with my RPi and hey it's a tiny computer with less cpu than my old cell phone that I still have. Why not have my old phone be productive in some way?
I don't actually know *What* I would use it for on my old phone. Music Server?
But having something like this in place could be a good way to move forward towards replacing the desktop with a phone.
Just an idea.
Thank you for your time and efforts.

[Q] And USB adapters for the DS7 yet? So we can hook up controllers etc.

Just wondering, since some of the newer tablets let you hook up mini usb devices to it and so. Was wondering if there had been any adapters yet or so for us streak 7 users? Would be cool to get a wired controller hooked up and so.
You would need an OTG cable to do that, as dell doesnt make any you will have to make your own or use the HDMI dock.
Well I have the HDMI Dock, so I could use the dock then insert the usb device to that? Was thinking about getting that Logitech F710 with that usb dongle, heard it had support for android. What else would I need? Or hows that work fully.
As for the non dock part, has anyone made a cable yet to work?
if your device had a usb-a connector you have no choice then but to make a cable.
the sixaxis/ds3 uses a mini usb connector and might work though usb,
I know it and the wiimote will work over bt, with the wiimote being the easier to pair one.
Well I have the wiimote working fine, Issue there is.. Yea.. Battery drain on that remote. So figured maybe getting a adapter. I guess I need a USB to Mini micro usb? (The new style mini usb thing.. man I miss the old big RAZR size ones) How many of you have used a HID device or so on android or the streak 7?
you'd need to splice together the dock connector to preferably a USB-A female port, it'd be the most useful as you'd have a cable that could accept anything, but it'd mean you'd always need a minimum of 2 cables.
You'd also have to dissemble to dock connector itself i believe as the OTG pins are different from what's wired in the normal sync/charge cables, you cant simply cut the cable and rewire it, you'd prob have to cut the dock connector open and resolder
If you made a dock to micro usb connector it'd only accept devices that have a micro usb port on it.
Keep in mind usb mode means that the controller would be drawing power from the device itself, while controllers dont draw that much, it's still something to point out
Wouldnt this be all I need?
http://www.amazon.com/USB-Female-Mini-Male-Adapter/dp/B0016RNX2I/ref=pd_sbs_e_4
Would take the normal size usb dongle or cord, fits into the USB slot of the dock itself.
I havnt actually tried it but it sounds like that should work, i know that port is designed for otg connections so i'd assume it'd take care of the hard work.
When on 2.2.2 Did I need a special program for this to work? I know 3.x had native support. Just wondering. =) (Or can any game/emulator with key remapping auto detect)
if it's anything like the hoops needed for the s5 on 2.2.x yes, unless dell included their own code stuff to make it work, then i'm not sure.
I've never attached a controller to anything, wired or not so I can only say that much
Wonder what the app would be called or so, anyone know? I mean I ordered the part, should be here in a few days, then I can report any tests I have with a Rumblepad 2.
Ok tested it out, So far nada. Dont know if its even supposed to work.
Has anyone here hooked a wired controller up to their android? Running Honeycomb now too.
I know people talk about the F710, which I wonder if that works cause its battery powered?
So what's the verdict guys? Can a controller or other USB device be connected to the mini USB port on the docking station and work? If not, will it work if you plug in a mini USB OTG cable (like this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mini-USB-Re...757?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a6edf5335) into the docking station and then plug the controller into the OTG cable?
So far my verdict is nada.. dont think its supplying power to the usb ports. Now its been said that adapter based ones may work, something where controller is powered by batteries. Tho again. No one ever gives a real confirm.
My next area to branch out is http://www.onlive.com/controller 50$ but you can use a adapter for the pc. However it also works with bluetooth, something that the tablet DOES support and no adapter needed. Since I have the onlive app, least it will work 100% for THAT. Once my tax money comes in, Ill order the controller and see if it can work on emulators and so too. least then we will have 1 solid answer that has some good use. (Since honestly, onlive on the tablet really isnt bad at all!)
Why not bluetooth your ps3 controller though the sixaxis app on the market thats what I've done works great

To answer both. If I am not mistaken. PS3 controllers have to be "paired". Which means when you wanna play PS3 or Tablet.. got to re-pair them all the time, correct?
Wii-Motes I know you dont have to re-pair them. However.. one thing I hate... that to use the classic controller.. you need to have the Wiimote laying around somewhere.. then the cable for classic. Seems bulky for normal use.
Both controllers all are battery too. Would be nice for wired solutions. If I do anything wireless, I may as well get that Onlive controller with BT support.
If you have a sixaxis/DS3 dedicated to non-ps3 use: you only have to re-pair it every time you want to use it on a different device.
The sixaxis/ds3 do work in usb mode, at least on pcs. I dont recall if there's a solution to use it in usb mode on android (though i'd imagine it should, as usb mode is trivial to enable)
If you only have a single device to use it with, you only ever need to pair it once and then you're done.
Well, I finally went and tried hooking up a usb hub to my S7, and my results were absolute failures.
I bought an OTG <-> dell 30 pin a while back and a standard OTG <-> dock cable.
I dont have a baseline as I dont know offhand which kernels are specifically tested to work.
It seems to enable the hub (by enable I mean it powers up on detection of a host, it's wall powered)
on my S5 with ICS/Phoenix kernal (which is known to support usb hosting), but nada on my S7 with ICS B4/mod and stock 514.
Can anyone explicitly confirm that the b4 and stock kernals work with host?
I'm pretty sure nothing is happening on either of those, and as it works fine on my S7 it's definitely not bad cables/hardware.
Edit: at least the S5 is even capable of powering the hub itself, and with a dock it can charge at the same time. If it wernt for the terrible HDMI out on it, it would be a full on android pc with the dock.
The S7 on the other hand: I still cant get anything, remotely powered or self powered: it gives no response
I can tell you, yes, ICS kernel does have otg drivers but may not provide power to those devices.

USB Dock

Hi All,
Is anyone aware of a dock for Android phones, similar to the laptop docks. It should be able to charge, provide HDMI and sound output. And also a port to connect a Mass storage device.
This is possible with the USB OTG. But I am not sure about the drivers for the HDMI out or audio out. Is there any place where we can find android drivers for these devices.
Thank you.
I just picked up the "multimedia" dock straight from Samsung, and really all it does is charge the phone. No access to the headphone jack as it becomes blocked, and as far as I know, there is no HDMI output for my NS4G. Granted, it does look nice with the phone docked, and it does everything I need it to do anyway - charge the phone and make it into a nice desktop clock. $17 on eBay in case you are interested. Let us know if you manage to find what you are looking for. Would be nice to find out I can do HDMI out after all.
USB/charging dock
As far as I know, you won't find any dock with HDMI or sound support for the Nexus S. All docks for this device do exactly the same thing, they only charge, and mount the SD when connected to a PC. You can find two or three different models on ebay for 20 or 30 dollars.

Can't you put it on the side to use it as a clock + access the headphones port?
its a good thing

I would really love a USB dock/ HDMI adapter for the Nexus S too. I watch stuff i dloaded from the internet on it all the time and i would love to be able to connect it to the big screen
Is there any way to use pen drives directly with nexus s, like it does in nokia n8

[Q]Howto connect the i9000 to the pc screen?

Hi guys,
been a passive viewer in the xda forums for a long time but never posted anything, so be easy on me - It's my first.
I would like to connect my galaxy s i9000 to the pc screen.
I know there's the TV out option, but it involves a 3.5" to RCA cable, and pc screens don't have RCA jacks.
Does anyone know of a way to do this? and if you know what kind of cable is required that will be great.
I'm using the CM9 rom, build 17 from theam hacksung.
Just to clarify, I want to connect to phone to the PC so I can view the phone on the PC screen.
Thanks in advance
Short answer is you can't.
Longer answer is you might.
Your monitor doesn't have RCA connectors but if you have a tuner installed inside your PC, you might be able to connect it to that and then use the software that came with the tuner to display it onto your monitor.
Another method would be to use a RCA to whatever input your display has converter but they are are usually pricey and after a search for RCA to HDMI/VGA/DVI I don't think they really exist.
Even if there was a 3.5mm to HDMI/VGA/DVI cable, it wouldn't work unless the display was designed to take a PAL or NTSC signal through those types of connections.
With cm9, you need to have 3.5mm to RCA cable plugged in then go into System Settings>Advanced>TV Out. The option is greyed out when no 3.5mm to RCA cable is plugged in and the option has to be checked every time you plug the cable in.
Thanks for the reply,
I knew about the tv-out option, but didn't think about using a tuner - that might work!
Another question, do you think that a micro usb - hdmi cable might work?
I saw a while back that samsung offered such a cable that was designed for that purpose exactly.
I've searched a lot of forums but havn't got a clear answer if this actually works, not have I seen a youtube video demonstrating this.
Does anyone know if using a micro usb - hdmi cable wokrs?

Do you know what tuner you have? I'm not sure if yours will have it but there will be a yellow plug like the ones you find on a TV.
I'm %99.9 sure that the I9000 doesn't have HDMI out through USB. It would seem a bit excessive to have two video out ports. Although you did spark an interesting subject, if someone could whip together drivers to work with something like this we could potentially have HDMI through USB but I don't see it happening any time soon.
Here's another way to view your phone through your PC: http://mymobiler.com/

Looking for Y otg and charging cable please

I am going to install the Nexus 7 to my car, indash, but I need to find the cable that allows usb storage, dvb radio and charging, is there a cable that has multi usb connectors, please could someone give me links to items...many thanks.

I was looking for something similar a while back. I'm in the UK and still haven't tracked one down
You can find a y otg cable HERE. If you need several USB port, you have to use an USB hub. And also you must flash a kernel with USB host mode charging patches.

Something like this perhaps? It had a usb a cable with a switched 5v lead (for host mode charging), that end plugs into a regular usb otg cable. The other side has female usb a (for devices), mini usb (for most small usb hubs), and male usb a (for connecting to a power source, in the 2nd pick there is a 2000 mAh usb battery)
I couldn't find anyone selling them so I started making them. I could make you one or post a wiring diagram and you can go to town on it.

How much to make one and post it to me please.
Ill make and estimate for you over the weekend. Do you want it exactly like the one pictured or do you have a custom request? Your kernel supports otg charging correct? Where will I be getting a quote to ship to?

I have the usb car rom and kernel by http://mehrvarz.github.io/nexus-7-usbrom/, this should work. yes I would like the same as yours please.
I have alot to do to my car anyways, I previously re modded my dash to fit a double din and modded out my boot to fit the base amp and power cap in the boot still having the spare in there and the base actually fitting inside the spare wheel and still sounding good, so will have to research the wiring needed for the nexus and the volume control and such...please be nice with the price, I do appreciate it though.
I am in the uk, where are you from?
I found the kernel you compiled, wondering if this will work with the rom I installed too.
It might, its all cm10.1 source. The current version does not support host mode, the updated one I'm posting this week does (just so you know). If it does work for you you could do some fun wardriving with your car mount, if your into that sort of thing!
I'm in sunny california usa

Will have to see what the shipping fees will be, I have friends over there too. Part of a gaming clan. Have been for sooo long now. If it works out too much, I will have to ask you for the wiring diagram and I will have to see about doing it myself, I am good with electronics, but it was just the time to set aside. You can message me the diag if you like, please forward it to fixer14 at hotmail.com.
Ok cool, its a pretty straight forward design. If you can solder you can make one.

Ok matey, hit me up with the details then please.
I have just been out to my car and have set my phone up via bluetooth, and also want my nexus to connect to the phone and have sound, calls, satnav running to the amp via phone, when I try to connect it seems that it will only allow 1 device at a time, so this is an issue for me, I want to be able to run my copilot live from the nexus, and also have ability to play music and receive and make calls. is there a bluetooth receiver that will allow me to do this without having to switch to a specific device each time...any ideas welcome, my nexus is not a 3g one.
My amp is a 4 channel Hertz, with powercap installed.
I'm installing my nexus 7 in my car as well but I'm concerned that it wont charge while running Nav, Pandora and other apps at the same time. It seems that the nexus 7 is picky when it come to cables and chargers. What do you guys suggest

Ive got my nexus 7 installed into my double din, I'm using a Parrot device to bluetooth sound to but also charging it from the usb slot from the Parrot box.
I'm going to change the bluetooth to a AUX cable to save on battery use and already tried optimising settings to save on battery.
I'm not very clued up on this type of stuff but I've got it so the screen comes on and status on when power is there, got screen dimming widgets so I can dim the screen right down when I want to save battery.
All in all it works very well but battery does eventually die after a week or two so I take it out for a full recharge.
A couple of ideas I'm thinking is
1) using usb extension cable, run it to the glove box and every couple of days attach a emergency battery charging unit.
2) using a little solar panel charging unit built into parcel shelf.

I am not concerned about power usage as an inverter will solve this permenantly. As long as you get the correct charger for use with the inverter.
Im going with this charger. From the looks of it, it seems to be a good choice.

I wonder why more developers don't include the fast charge option in their kernels. Ill let everyone know how it works
Okay, I have just made up a dock for the nexus for my car, it is in "Production State" at the mo, so I still have to tidy it up and spray it and finish it.
I have fitted a charging connector and audio connector into it,
Hardest part was getting the connectors to line up.
At least it is started now, I will be making up the OTG cable, when I get the wiring diagram for it, have all the bits ready.
Okay, here is the Video, I know the dock looks rough at the moment, but it has to be tidied up.

sony xav-ax100 USB questions

Hello
I have been talking to superdave about adding a second USB to my sony xav-ax100. I am very capable of taking unit apart and soldering on the new USB cable to the board. But that is about the extent of my knowledge on doing this. I have no programming back ground. So here are my questions:
1: upon adding the second usb to the board is there any programming that would have to be done for this to work? Does a second USB icon just show up on the main screen.
2: also Dave talked about doing the UART while the head unit is open. I have tried to do a little research on what this is, and from what I can tell it is a way to hook up a computer to the Sony head unit. Why would I need to do this? Keeping in mind I have no programming knowledge.
This unit is going in a bike so once I get it set up to be able to use two USB's. And of course the "caution screen disable" mod. I should be done with modding this unit.
My hopes for this Mod are so I can leave my thumb drive hooked up to the (1) USB port, and be able to hook up my phone for the AA feature for maps and spotify on the (2) USB port.
Thanks for any help on this.
Hub works fine on mine for use with a USB stick and Android auto.
