I got the 16GB Touchpad few days ago and since i got the one with an american charger i cant charge it yet (till i get the traveler kit).
My actual problem is that it doesn't charge through the USB port too. I left it for like 24-30 hours charging through the USB port (with the cable that came with the touchpad) and when i try to turn it on, it shows me an icon of an empty battery.
Is my usb cable problematic or it just that the touchpad cant charge through the usb port from a PC?
ps: every time i plug the usb it get a message telling "to reliably charge please use the charger and cable that came with this device"
I have the same issue with a 32 GB one. I received it brand new, factory sealed today and it is going back to HP. I called HP, the cable is fine, works with my HTC phone, it's the USB port on the Touchpad, it's loose and losses connection. HP is sending a box with prepaid shipping label and doing a warranty repair.
I really love the Touchpad and I am a bit disappointed with receiving a new device with a loose USB port. HP has great support and I can't wait until I get it back.

Unfortunately thats not an option for me (returning it to touchpad), since i bought it from Ebay (thats the only way possible for me to buy a touchpad from my country).
You had the same issue with the charger plugged in the usb cable as well?
What sort of power source do you use, if not the charger.
I've tried to use a computer, but it does not look like it's charging, but data transfer work.
I tried with an iphone charger, that sort of work. It complains about not getting enough power (iphone charger is 5,0V while the hp charger is 5,2V)
Bottom line. Use the original charger, just buy an us adapter. It works great.
There is another thread here sonewere discussing chargers for non US owners.

Im trying to charge it through my PC using the original cable that was in the box (tried it in a USB 2.0 port) and im getting the 'try a reliable recharging source like the USB cable and the charger that came with your touchpad'.
I also tried charging it with a 5.0V 200mA phone charger but it didnt work either.
Shouldnt it charge even a bit with the cable? im trying to charge it for 2 days now

Yes, tried the wall charger, then pc, a different usb cable, all had the same result. When I plugged in I could feel the USB port loose in the Touchpad itself, it had a bit of play and if I played gently on it, it would begin to charge or connect to the pc. When i let go, it disconnected from my pc and then gave me the charging error message. I purchased mine from an e bay store and it has a warranty for 1 year.
I would be happy to help you with yours, if you want to ship it to the US, it has a warranty from the factory. Pm me if you'd like help. I am certain that shipping to and.from US could be costly but I am willing to help.

Mine will only will charge from official HP chargers. This is much like my old iPhone 3g before all the generic manufacturers caught up. I suspect that the voltage and amp requirements are tighter than the USB specification, so it will be a crap shoot if you use non HP chargers.
With that said, HP has 30% off all touchpad accessories right now. Combine it with the cupon SAVE15HP

Don't worry over that, I can get what you need and ship it to you.
Also, in speaking to HP, any USB charger in the US works, they're considered universal.

you cant charge the touchpad using a computers usb ports. it doesnt draw enough power. the voltage of the charger doesnt really matter, it needs at least 2 amps or it wont charge the touchpad. cell phone chargers usually only draw 1 amp or less and usb ports only .5 amps.

That is absolutely not the case.
I have only charged mine once with the AC-USB thing and I have been using it since I got it the first day of the sale. I use mine all day long and only charge it occasionally via USB to PC connection. I use the original cable from HP and another one from my Samsung Mythic (work and home).
The message that you get when you plug it in is misleading but normal on a stock TP. However there is a patch in PreWare that changes it to just default to charge and not bug you. Anyone who intends to use this thing at all with WebOS needs to get PreWare installed. In fact, some time spent at precentral.net would benefit any new owners. You will learn A LOT more about these little jewels. I spent a few hours reading stickies and interesting threads and learned a great deal.
If it is really plugged in (and you will know because your PC will tell you) and you get no charge, you have a problem. It should charge on or off while plugged in - mine does.

Now to be completely honest - the first charge I made out of the box was with the AC adapter and I left it in overnight like I had been told.
But since then I have never used the AC plug and I have let it get down to about 20% or so but no lower.
It very well may be that from a DEAD state, it requires the extra amps to jump start it, but as long as you have that initial charge it is covered by the lower amperage of the direct USB-to-PC connection. I'm guessing it came with a fair charge and you burned through it without ever plugging it in to the USB.
Bear in mind that not ALL USB ports on a PC are powered the same either. Older USB 1.0 and 1.1 are crap for power. Front or top-mount ones also may not have as much juice as the ones in the back directly off the motherboard. Look at portable hard drives, some come with a double-header cable to use two low-powered ports. I know my top-mount ones will not power my 1TB 2.5-inch drive, but the ones in the back do.
However, I am really surprised you can't pick up a standard plug in USB adapter for your country for a few dollars (equivalent) for wall. Jeez they sell them at the dollar stores here now. I don't know if a car adapter would output enough to do it but that is another idea. If you can get one, you should be able to bring it back easily enough. The 2 amp adapter does charge a lot faster.

LOL, I am really in a rare mood as this question has bugged me a little. So I decided to find some straight poop. Here is the best description I have seen anywhere.
http://www.maxim-ic.com/app-notes/index.mvp/id/3241
If you don't want to read it, the gist (as I understand it) is:
At 5V, the USB ports in a PC have to be able to source (provide) at least 500 mA (.5 AMP). However, depending on how your motherboard is provisioned (MOSFETs and diodes) that is limited/controlled.
The spec though, does allow as much as 5A to be provided. In fact, 2A is not uncommon if the other ports are not loaded.
So you could try unplugging all your other USB stuff or try another computer's USB ports.

Given that the HP charger has a 2A output, odds are that anything much below around 500mA isn't going to charge the device, or at least not at a rate that'll offset the drain while it's running.
The USB ports on laptops often won't supply enough current, particularly if there's other devices on the same bus. If you plug it into a powered USB hub then you should be in business as they should supply more like around 1A generally.
My Touchpad charges from my laptop USB port, however it is slow. I am getting about 8 - 10% charge per hour. The screen needs to be off though, otherwise there is no noticable charging happening.
Mine is not charging with USB laptop at all. Need to use wall charger
I have XRON VB2.8 on my two touchpads and both show battery charging symbol when they are connected to computer via USB and yes the they charge very slow.
FYI, can't remember if WebOS / Govnah tells you what the current amps being used is, but if you are on Android tools like Elixir 2 tell you how many amps you are either discharging (-) or charging (+). So depending on what you are using (wifi, bluetooth, # of widgets, running applications, screen brightness, overclocking, underclocking, etc.) YMMV on whether or not you can charge via usb connected to your computer.
So if you are discharging at a rate of -750 mA connecting to a usb port on your computer will still have you discharging at a rate of -250:
Code:
[COLOR="Red"]-750 mA[/COLOR] + 500 mA = [COLOR="Red"]-250 mA[/COLOR]
mine charges in the usb port, but only if I turn off the screen or turn off the touchpad completely. my ports only provide 500mA, and with the screen off, the touchpad draws about 50mA, so it can charge at about 450mA. With the screen on, it draws about 760mA, so even when it's plugged in the USB, it is discharging at a rate of about (760-500=260mA).
good morning everybody :
so last night, my phone worked normaly untel i unplaged it from computer, the screen wont turn back on, and got the red led (like it still in charge )
so i pushed the power button down for 10s and i thought that i just turned the phone off . but i actually killed my phone.
i pluggued it on wall charge all night. and today i tried several solutions and nothing:
held power button+down/up button for 10s and more then 10s
faced the light sensor to light and held power+down/up button
plugged unplugged to computer several times
the only thing i got is a sound when i plug it to computer, and adb devices wont list anything.
i noticed that my computer( win 8 ) detected it as : Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 (com3)
please help
please, i allow my thread a little up . i still can't fix it
I had this issue after my kids were using my usb to wall plug, and later had this issue when they used my usb to 12V charger in the car. They have our old Inc.s. Anyway I ended up using a different cable and it began to charge and everything has been fine since. The odd thing is that both of the other cables still work for other devices just not my One anymore. If you don't have another cable to try it with I've found them for $7 - $8 at Big Lots/Odd Lots and for about $5 at Dollar General & 5Below and once at Dollar Tree. I should have bought 4 or 5 of those. I haven't had any issues with any of them except my kids seem to ruin them fairly quickly but they are both under the age of 10.
thanks for your reply, i already tried several chargers .. but no results

It sounds like you're port may be damaged. Next step is probably the tech center at your carrier. ? hopefully you have insurance.
I have a T-mobile branded Note 4, which I purchased used on eBay about half a year ago. The device worked fine apart from having difficulty finding and keeping a GPS signal - which I didn't mind as Google Maps worked without a problem. In the last 2 days I saw that my Note had problem with charging the battery. The charging indicator would show up, but the "Fast Charge" option would not appear despite being enabled in the settings. Not only that, but the battery would actually deplete itself when charging.
At first I thought that the problem was with the ROM screwing up for some reason, so I went back and restored a backup, but that didn't help. Following that I thought that the issue might be the battery being faulty so I got myself a brand new battery, but nothing changed. Finally I determined that it was actually the USB port that was at fault. I had issues with software acting up and faulty batteries before, but never a broken USB - which is why I never even considered a broken USB port being the reason.
So, now I'm stuck with a phone that refuses to charge and can't even connect to my PC at all. I honestly don't know what my options are at this point. I don't consider myself tech-savvy enough to take the phone apart and change the USB port, but I'm also out of luck, because the phone is rooted and running a custom ROM on it and without a working USB I can't bring it back to its original state. I'm the second owner as well, so even if I was somehow able to restore the phone to factory settings I don't know if Samsung would honor my warranty and I'm on MetroPCS not T-Mobile, so I can't go through them either.
I'm wondering is there any place online that I can send it and get it fixed for a good price or should I just mark my losses and sell it on eBay for a lower price stating that it has a broken USB port?
If I could make some easy suggestions first. Thanks to some good moves by Samsung if you just buy an external battery charger you can swap charged batteries very easily. If you don't want to swap you can install a wireless charging back on your note and fix that right up. As for accessing the phone with USB you could get away with a Micro SD to SD adapter and just put files you need to transfer on that. Files can also be sent over Bluetooth and WiFi with our phones. The only thing that would be very hard to work around would be Odin flashes to new firmware updates. I will say sometimes you can hold it just right and get a connection but you need a stable hand.
For affordable extern charger with two extra batteries I recommend checking out Anker on Amazon. Any generic MicroSD to SD will work so go with what is cheap. As for professional repair? I looked over the daughter board replacement steps on ifixit and on a quick look it seems like the screen has to be removed making it a pain. Finding someone reputable to do it is really the biggest challenge. I hope the workarounds help and that maybee you can find a permanent fix from a reputable repair shop. Check locally, it is a common procedure. Good luck.

You can purchase the flex port (which has the usb port, mics, etc.) for about $10. There is a youtube video tutorial on how to replace it. Watch it and see if it's easy enough for you to do it.
Did you try a different USB cable? You didn't mention that you tried that. Some independent cellphone shops can repair your phone, but I don't know how much they would charge. Sorry If wasn't much help.
The tablet is dead, it was suddenly. Won't charge or turn on and it's not recognised by the PC. Recovery mode (power button + volume-) doesn't work either.
I know that is not the screen, because the PC doesn't detect the tablet at all. I tried with another battery (my wife has the same tablet), but I had no luck. I also know that the charger and the usb cable are fine.
What else I can do, any ideas or suggestions?

I had the same symptoms after disconnecting and reconnecting battery,I hed to disconnect it for like an hour and then three times try to power on the tablet and it did power on. Maybe your battery is dead so after another hour you may try to use the other battery. If it will work, try to connect the batteries together so the dead one can get a little charge (but do some research I am not sure if it won't have a chance to damage anything) then the same after an hour connect try power on and if it powers on immediately give it a charge.

Just wondered if you had tried this and if so, how you got on? Asking because I bought my daughter one off ebay and it was working fine when I got it, am sure I recharged it once , she played it and then again in morning and thinks she played it till battery ran out. I have since tried charging via pc and mains power, and have disconnected battery twice (case was v. easy to remove so concerned this fault may be reason it was sold), but cannot get a flicker of a response on screen. i got my daughter this as she was desperate for an android tablet for mods for minecraft as I had bought her a Amazon Fire 7 and from what I could see just after xmas, it wasnt possible to root it or sideload at that time, and she said Amazon had no mods compared to the play store and she had been ecstatic with the mods she had found for her android for the short time she had it. I do know when I plug it into the wall charger that the motherboard area gets warm if its been plugged in for a while? Bit of a noob on this stuff, and off sick with probs with my nervous system so my concentration and memory can be a pia. Anyway I was wondering how I can find out if its goosed or what I can try? One of the batterys advertised on ebay is about £50 which seems steep to me, esp. if it doesnt fix it, and esp since I have been unable to work for a few years cos of this illness. I only bought the tablets cos I had extra money after I finally applied and got pip, and got it backdated. Any recommendations for a reasonably priced option for her for her minecraft? Should I go the tablet\notebook type route or can they not handle minecraft? Bit confused by these new notebooks esp touchscreen ones as new ones seem to have small amounts of ram yet are v. popular.
Thanks for advice\thoughts\feedback and let me know if I should start ,y own thread...I only jumped on this to see how he got on and then as I do nowadays with this illness, I then jumped from topic to topic that jumped into my head x sorry x

Firt I would try to trickle charge the battery.
BEFORE YOU DO THIS:
Remove the SD CARD. I forgot to do this and snapped my card straight in half removing the back cover.
This started happening to my ME176 as well but of course not until after I retired it and gave it to my mom.
I would start by letting it sit on the charger for about 30 minutes (since we don't know the current charge state and if the overcharge block is functioning). This will give it a slight charge if dead.
Disconnect charger and remove the back cover and disconnect the battery (as posted earlier). Push and hold the power button a few times even though there is no power.
It may take a few tries of disconnecting and reconnecting the battery before it decides to power up, so keep the cover off while doing this.
As with other similar posts, I seem to be having USB issues. Neither charging cables nor OTG show any signs of functionality. Wireless charging, however, does seem to be working but I must keep my phone out of its case. Just like the others, I saw a few persistent popups from Samsung VR to take a little tour, and twice I went back to what I was doing. Hadnt seen it since, then all of a sudden while connected to a normal note 3 charger, it began to rapidly switch between charging and disconnected. Unprovoked of course, and when I went to inspect and reinsert the cable, it began again after 2 or 3 minutes. I unplugged it, promptly tested with the original charger and had no luck. Then on to many more cables and charging bricks, laptop ports and such.. no action. Tried OTG flash drive, nothing. Last ditch effort, tried wireless charging with the phone off and its working. Has any headway been made in this issue? It seems software related, and at the very least carriers could acknowledge it if so. I am not under warranty, and this is an incredible loss for me as it effectively neuters my cell phone. I need to charge while out and about to run my business and wireless isnt very portable... Please help XDA
I have isolated the problem to a software issue undoubtedly... Correct me if im wrong. The wireless charging is interrupted when a cable is plugged into the usb port, indicating that it is not faulty and the phone recognizes the hardware. At least according to my personal logic.
EDIT : The Induction charging appears to be on its way out as well. Only working intermittently, and rarely at that. I fear the worst brick possible (one not caused my my own tampering)
Desperate bump plus a bonus question: what would you consider a fair price to pay for USB port repair? Considering giving that a try, maybe I have bad solder or something. I don't have UV glue and all that other necessary stuff to check it out myself.
So, I think I have a the same issue. I had Note 5 (DUO) which was 8 months old and it just suddenly stopped charging. It charged via USB only if the phone was turned off. However, it seems that it charged wireless. Because i was traveling, in the pinch, business meetings etc, could not waste time figuring out the issue and purchased another Note5(DUO), in August. Well, just today, it developed the same simptom as the previous one: it stopped charging via USB when the phone is on, it only charges when the phone is off! I see that there are no replies to the OP message, but adding my issue here in hope that there will be some response....
