Not getting Hangouts notifications after Nougat update - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello All,
I decided to flash the 7.0 factory image last night and everything seems to going very smoothly except I do not get any notifications from Hangouts unless I actually go into the app. I did go in to and disable the battery optimization on it however they are still not coming through. Is this an issue anyone is having? I can't think of anything else I could do so I'm wondering if maybe this is a bug.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

I've had this problem many times with Hangouts over the years and I know people who have stopped using it due to this issue.
I was having this issue with all my chat notifications (internet based chat), flashed a custom ROM and it seems to be working better.
I am not sure how to fix it, a factory reset is all I can suggest.

I'm a big Hangouts user (with my Google Voice number), and I'm getting notifications as normal under Nougat. I get a drop-down that lets me reply when a message comes in, which quickly scrolls back up and is replaced by the normal hangouts notification icon. I did a straight OTA upgrade to 7 from 6.

Just saw this post and wanted to know if anyone came up with a solution for this problem.

Not receiving SMS/MMS on stock messaging app.

Hi, first of all thanks for the help you could bring me. My problem is that since yesterday night I'm not receiving any kind of sms or mms on my stock messaging app. Today I was trying to solve it but with no success. So I installed Go SMS Pro and to my surprise it worked, I started receiving SMS and mms, but still the stock messaging app is not alerting of upcoming sms even though it's receiving them (I think that they share a common folder and that's why if in go SMS pro it works it'll show on stock messaging app, so in theory stock is not receiving but just showing, am I right?).
For now I'm using SMS go pro, but I'd like to know why this happened. I read something about accessing a hidden testing menu (*#*#4636#*#*) to change the smsc but that menu is not available on my phone (any idea why?) tried the code above and tried using those apps that serve as a shortcut. The screen goes dark as it's trying to access the testing menu and returns to home screen, in other apps (like missing shortcuts) it shows as unavailable. I even edited the hiddenmenu file on efs/carrier from OFF to ON and still the testing menu doesn't appear. I'm using my phone right now with mobile data, wifi works well and so do phone calls, no problems at all.
I'd really appreciate any ideas that could help me. My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300 running 4.3 firmware, I updated from 4.1.2 a couple of days ago but didn't have any problems, I could receive sms normally. The problem happened suddenly yesterday night.

there is an option in Messaging app...Auto Retrieve - check if enabled....
if other app work with no problem it's just an app related problem..not something else...check in app setting maybe something is not enabled...
a factory reset would make it work for sure....but is too much...

Thanks for the answer. Yeah, I don't want to factory reset since I've just did it to upgrade to 4.3. About the app settings, I've just tried all the possible combinations. I'm just using GO SMS Pro for now but MMS aren't downloading. Sigh.

try this: go to Settings->More->Application Manager-> Select "All" tab -> select Messaging-> Clear data + Clear cache...

Issues with Android 5.0.1

Hello everyone.
I've updated to 5.0.1 and I've been having issues with updates basically I'm not getting notifications for my Emails or WhatsApp or any other app for that matter, i have to manually go into my apps to get my notifications. For example, once I go to my WhatsApp i get my messages all at the same time (iOS style) and also my emails, I have to go into my mail box to refresh to get my emails. Is this an issue or i'm missing something in the settings?
I searched before starting this thread couldn't find anything.

Sounds like you need to do a factory reset. Always good with an update anyway.

tell me, are you using greenify? i had the same issue for a day, until i found whats causing it. i never greenify my apps with notifications first off. greenify has a setting to keep notifications, when i enabled it i stopped getting any notifications. as soon as i disabled it and rebooted, i got notifications again.
I just did a factory reset and it seems that it has solved the issues so far so good.

Hangouts Issue

Anyone having this issue? When I receive a text, I swipe up to go directly to hangouts and after I type in my pin to unlock, it'll take me to the hangouts app, but I'll have to scroll down through hundreds of texts before I get to the one that was just sent to me. This started happening after the latest update of hangouts. Tried clearing data/cache and rebooting, but it didn't work.
I've got the same. I only started noticing after I'd updated to lollipop though. If I go to the normal unlock, then hangouts, it takes me straight to the message...
Same here. A work around is opening hangouts directly and not through the notification.
Yup. Same thing and it is annoying as hell. Like mentioned before, going directly to Hangouts works, but it also negates the point of the shortcut from notification shade or lockscreen. The other thing that works is to just type your response and send it. It jumps to the bottom after you hit send. No good if you didn't get to read the sender's whole message, but if you already read it on the lockscreen or wherever and know your response it works.
Yea, noticed all those things after a while. I assume it's a hangouts issue and not Motorola's issue? Because it was working as intended until the recent hangouts update...
I don't think this has anything to do with the moto x. It happens on my nexus 4 and nexus 7 and started whenever the completely revamped hangouts a few months ago.

Android N SMS problem

Ok I had this before on my nexus but cannot remember how I fixed it.
I get an sms and it shows in notification but when I open the sms there are no text in the message. It just disappears.
And it happens in Hangout and Messenger.
What's the main sms process ? Want to see if I force stop and clear data if it will fix the problem
Thanks Rudolph
Does anybody know why this happens? I have the same issue but am not sure how to fix it.
Would really appreciate the help
Same issue here. Nexus 6 on Android N.
I have Hangouts as the default messaging app.
When I receive a text message, a heads up notification pops up but when I open hangouts the message is gone.
I also tried to switch to the Google Messenger app. In this case I can receive texts but I cannot send them...
Textra seems to work fine but it's not my cup of tea...
Anyone knows how to fix this, please?
Now it's getting even weirder.
It looks like whatever SMS I delete in Hangouts or Messenger gets restored after I close and reopen the app...
It looks like that whatever I do in Messenger or Hangouts goes nowhere and does nothing.

This is why it is an alpha build and not really meant for day to day use.
Same issue here.
I searched old threads, and found there is a solution, just reboot to safety mode, and send a sms to yourself. Then reboot to normal...
However, it doesn't work for me.
I have just found what may have caused the issue (at least in my case) and it was entirely my fault.
I basically dirty flashed the N alpha on top of my previous 6.0.1 installation where I had made quite a few changes, instead of doing a clean installation.
That plus the fact that some SMS/MMS things have now changed in M (for example the telephony databases are no more stored in /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony but are now under /data/user_de/0/com.android.providers.telephony ) may have messed up my system.
I've now done a clean installation and all seems to be fine with SMS in Hangouts for the time being.
Other small annoyances (mainly related to the cellular data connection) also seem to be gone now.
The SMS issue reappeared after some time (i.e. Incoming text messages are shown in notifications but they are not saved in Hangouts or Messenger).
After having done all sort of different tests, it looks like the issue may be related to a language setting.
The Android N alpha allows you to set two languages under Settings > Language & input > Language.
- With just one language enabled, all is fine.
- With 2 languages enabled, Hangouts and Messenger seem to work ok for some time, then the disappearing-SMS bug comes back. The only workaround I could find is to disable the second system language and reboot the phone.

Not receiving notifications

Hey all, I hope somebody can help me out with this. I've noticed this problem with multiple apps but I will continue my description with Whatsapp as it's the most important to me.
It seems to be random, but some (becoming most) times I don't receive any notifications from whatsapp. When i open the app, i can see the app "updating" and receiving all the messages that were sent to me since the previous launch.
I have gone to the battery management and turned whatsapp to manual mode with all 3 options enabled (auto launch, secondary app launch and background usage)
I've also turned on unlimited data restrictions for the app.
I'm still facing the same issue. Anybody else out there facing the same thing with whatsapp or any other app? Any ideas how to fix this?
Same problem messaged Huawei and got a real crap guide on how to fix it . There "fix" was to hard reset the phone which we all know a new phone should work out of the box what good is a hard reset going to do apart from wipe the phone
It could be a network issue. Sometimes when am on wifi every notification comes on time(tested it with my second phone). When i switch on 4g , notification can have a considerable delay. And not only watsapp. Instagram facebook gmail you name it.

Have you try to put out whatsapp from battery optimization apps...
Settings, Apps, Apps, press 4 dots upper right corner, special access (or something like that), exclude whatsapp or any other app from battery optimization
My notfications are working, but sometimes it doesn't play the notification sound for whatsapp. It seems to be random, does anybody know how to fix this?
