ADB over WiFi missing from developer options - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I needed to switch on adb over wifi. This way i can cast my screen on my laptop using vysor and put my phone away for better network. I am pretty sure that the option to switch on adb over wifi was there in previous version. I have gone through some threads concerning activating adb over network, haven't tried them yet. Please confirm about the option in dev options and any app that can help in casting screen. Thanks
Edit: currently on rooted Stock Nougat

I'm very late to this thread, but luckily, as of Android 11 and up, adb works over wi-fi (without USB) on non-rooted Android phones via Developer options Wireless debugging switches.

[Q] Teach me how to Dou...Tether!

I'm currently running Firefly 2.7, but I've had a similar issue across a couple roms and several modems. The only successful tethering I've EVER done has been via Firefly here and whatever stock kernel/modem it comes with.
Basically, I'm looking for anyone to explain to me what process they use to tether...
I've never successfully USB tethered. I've hotspotted twice, once it worked GREAT (I was plugged into usb at the time for power), it was fast and flawless. I tried over and over again one day and finally got it to connect, but it repeatedly wanted to time out and error, although it never lost its wifi connection. That time I was NOT plugged in.
These are both using the baked-in tether options in Froyo---USB tether and hotspot, NOT using an external app. I've also used PDANet successfully, but I'd prefer to be able to bounce between systems (I actually use about 5 different laptops regularly) and share the connection on the road.
All my systems are using Win 7, selecting home or work as network type. Any suggestions welcome.
Quick edit: I've noticed that sometimes with this rom my wifi will stop working all together---I don't leave it on normally, but sometimes it won't turn on.
i dont have any wifi issues with Firefly
I have never done USB tether before now. It worked on first try. took me less than a minute to figure out and have working.
however to enable USB tethering.
plug USB into PC
Press Menu button
Press Settings
Press Wireless and Network
Press Tethering
Press CHECK enable.
PC will do the rest by itself. (win 7 64 / other drivers pre-installed)
Yea, that's pretty much exactly what I did. You're successfully hotspotting and usb tethering w/ firefly base rom? Hmm. Anyone else?
tethering AND hot-spotting?...
no i tethered only. ( PC got internet from PHONE via USB )
hot spotting is wifi.. ( aslo know as Mobile AP )
you want to do both? or...?
EDIT: you can also share internet through Bluetooth if your pc has it. mine does.
EDIT EDIT: to get my Mobile AP fully connected (no limited connectivity), i had to have windows "Troubleshoot the connection" . And setup your Mobile AP settings on Phone to use WPA2 with password. your phone # is a good choice for PW.
I just want to do one OR the other successfully each time. Bluetooth isn't a choice currently, really the Mobile AP is the best overall solution. I had just left it open to see if I could connect, but if I can make it work every time I'll certainly secure.

T-MoUSA Z1s C6916 WiFi HotSpot not broadcasting (14.4.B.0.56, rooted, not-deodexed)

Awesome community, I'm having an interesting (read: annoying) problem with my (above mentioned) T-MoUSA Z1s on firmware 14.4.B.0.56.
Prior to the latest firmware OTA push, my WiFi tether worked perfectly. It broadcast, devices could see the SSID and connect, etc. Since the update, even though all the visual indicators on my phone say that WiFi Hotspot and set to broadcast, everything on devices configured to connect (even if the SSID isn't broadcasting) acts like the network isn't present. I've tried changing every aspect of the configuration; SSID changed, Encryption changed, disabled, re-enabled, etc. Nothing has worked. T-Mo reps confirm my plan is still set to allow WiFi Hotspot. They also confirm they've seen no data on the WiFi HotSpot allowance.
I can't find any other threads in the Help/Troubleshooting section about this, nor has there been any mention in the update-related discussions in General and in Android Dev. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Update!
Using root explorer, I renamed the entire folder of \data\misc\wifi and rebooted. After reboot, launching WiFi Tethering prompted for setup again. Tethering now works.
Dear Marius
so have you achieved root on your c6916?
Many thanks!

Troubleshoot Wi-Fi Tethering Android 5.1

I searched for help unsuccessfully. If I missed a post that offers help, please refer me to it.
I have an unrooted first generation Motorola X. It has recently been factory reset. When I enable Wi-Fi tethering and I can see the wireless connection but none of my devices can connect to it.
Windows Devices say "Cant connect to this network"
Android Devices just never say connected
Troubleshooting steps I have already taken
1- Reset adapter (On windows)
2- Rebooted (both phone and computer)
3- Uninstalled and Reinstalled newest driver for PC
4- Successfully tethered this PC to a different phone on same plan using Wifi Tethering
5- Successfully tethered this PC to this phone using USB Tethering
6- Attempted using 5ghz vs 2.4 ghz
7- Attempted using no security vs WPA2
Any ideas what else I can do to troubleshoot this?
Running the stock firmware? If not, what are you running? What model Moto X do you have?
I can confirm this.
Moto X - 1060 DE on Verizon. Stock firmware
OTA update to 5.1 broke tether in the way mentioned. Wifi appears to cycle on and off repeatedly such that you may be able to occasionally catch it, but the connection is not maintained if it even ever gets a chance to complete.
AT&T cancelled their roll-out without explaining why, but I would not be surprised if this may be one issue
Edit: LG-G3 had the same issue. http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-lg-g3/general/lollipop-tethering-t3071188

vysor

can anyone use vysor? to me only black screen, I tried vysor's suggestions but nothing to do
I just found this thread long after I got Vysor (and scrcpy) to work (almost) flawlessly on Android 11 (with USB setting up the initial adb connection and then switching to Wi-Fi thereafter)....
In early May I updated from Android 11 to Android 12 and I found out that Android 12 has a fantastic new Developer option "Wireless debugging" feature where you can set up the adb connection to the PC completely over Wi-Fi (no need for the initial USB connection!).
I just wanted people to know new information related to using Vysor completely over Wi-Fi (no USB connection is ever needed again!).
This always on Wi-Fi Vysor capability is new in Android 12 because Android 12 has a new Developer option for "Wireless debugging".
However, Android 12 also has a new Developer option for "Enhanced MAC Randomization" which randomizes the MAC address on every Wi-Fi connection, so with that added desired Wi-Fi simplicity in Android 12 comes also the added desired privacy of MAC randomization on every connection (the difference being Android 11 only randomized the MAC per SSID, as far as I understand it).
All this new Android 12 functionality has implications for your Vysor (and scrcpy) setup, based on my tests over the past couple of months.
Of course, if your router is using the MAC address to hand out the IP address you might need address reservation since the router can no longer expect a consistent MAC address if you set that new Android 12 Developer option but you can set the Android phone to request a "Static" IP address (if you want the adb connect commands to be consistent in the IP address in day to day usage).
I have found that rebooting the PC causes me to need to reconnect via an adb command on the PC before Vysor will work, and, for unknown reasons yet, often the Android 12 "Wireless debugging" switch gets turned off (mysteriously) - which affects the Vysor (and scrcpy) connections from one day to another.
It's no big deal once you figure out the commands and switches though, where the screenshots below show the settings I currently have on my unrooted Android 12 Samsung Galaxy A32-5G phone from T-Mobile (many of which are for privacy and functionality reasons).

Moto e5 plus usb tethering issue

I have a moto e5 plus, that wont let me tether my mobile data to my computer through usb. The setting just stays blank. How do I fix it? Thank you
You have to make sure you enable developer options, (tap build number until says unlocked). In developer options enable adb debugging. Then switch your default USB mode to either data transfer or tethering mode. Hope this helps you out.
