Gear VR overheating.......... - T-Mobile Note 7 Questions & Answers

Neither of my Note 7's would overheat while using Gear VR. I've NEVER received the heat warning.
So, now that I've downgraded to the S7E, guess what? After 15 minutes, bam, overheat warning. This whole fiasco has got me so pissed off right now.

Galaxy phones run hot the first few days. If you just got it, let it settle in for a few days, then try again.

just dismiss the warning and move on, in reality the phone is just warm, not hot. I think Oculus is just trying to cover their own asses in case something does happen. This way, if you ignore it and something DOES happen to happen, they can sit there and say "we told you so"

When this message pops up, because the S7E is piping hot, the phone gets extremely laggy, forcing you to exit VR. You can't just dismiss the warning. The extreme lag will continue.

I had no lag. It always worked for me to just ignore and dismiss it

For me I had the Note 7 in the gear VR and it got really hot after about half-an-hour. It's not worth the risk to me for my devices to get that uncomfortably hot whether they're just breaking in or not

Have you tried a hard reset (hold down power button for like 20 seconds) and do a factory default to rule out software glitch?

This sort of thing happens when a new device is released. Unfortunately it comes with the territory. Just look at pretty much any iPhone ever released...

Galaxy Gear Phone Anti-Theft

How cool is that..
Samsung have inadvertently build in an anti-theft device in the Galaxy gear for your Phone...
How... Just leave your phone in another room and start to walk away from it... Voila... Gear vibrates to say it has lost connection.

well, that doesn't stop the thief from stealing your phone, does it?
Yes it could stop the thief if you realize you left your phone behind and retrieve it before the thief. I was thinking same thing. Not a long range on that Bluetooth. Actually wish it had a hair longer range. Can't go upstairs with watch if phone charging downstairs. Would kind of defeat the anti theft feature...heh.

Message: check battery cover for protection against water damage ..."

I get the check battery cover message every time phone turn on or reboots. Do you guys it too? I'm thinking it should only appear if the back door is open or loosely shut.

That's likely a feature - to make sure your phone is in the best possible protected mode in the event of exposure to water.
It should be the same for everyone. It is a reminder because Samsung is assuming when you restart or power on the device, that you may have removed the cover to access the battery or sd card.
You also a message when you unplug the usb charging cord.

All those stupid messages are why I like to root my phones.
Xposed mods can help you get rid of most of the annoying messages.

Yea totally agree with rooting. Up to this point I used to be on a Galaxy SII Skyrocket, with CM10.2 stable version. And honestly life was so good with CM and ADB. I'm gonna wait a little longer for a root solution, I still don't know how this S5 will behave in response to flashing those. (The yellow triangle voids the warranty, and triangleaway might not work on S5) So I'm staying away from that mess yet.

Unless you really piss someone off at AT&T, then they (in the past anyway) usually don't care if you rooted your phone. As long as it's a verified "mechanical" issue and not a software problem, then I've never heard of anyone being denied warranty claims.
Take that with a grain of salt though. It's certainly not "set in stone" and is subject to change with the wind.
EDIT:
There was one developer awhile back who was a bit of an ass. He hard bricked his phone and tried to get it warrantied and he was denied when Samsung said it was his software that caused a CPU issue. I think they "knew" him though.
You know, if you have a case on ur phone I don't see how your back cover could be loose.

Does anyone know why this happens?
When moving around a lot and phone is in my pocket its starts to get hot to the point I
carry it in my hand. Does any one now why or how to prevent this from happening?

I also carry phone in front pocket. I wear jeans and walk a lot, don't have any issues with heat. Does it happen with any pants or only with specific? Try putting phone in another pocket.

I have also had this issue. Thought it was my imagination as it has been very hot lately, then realized my phone gets very warm in pockets for some reason.
its happens in my front pocket no mater if its shorts or slack it start to get hot with in 4 to 5 minutes. Then I just carry it in my hand. I'm not rooted so its all stock. I have not gotten the notification for the update yet but I hope it fixes this problem. I think it has something to do with the excessive movement of the gyroscope triggering some action or process. still happening.

I have disabled many apps that I didn't need and one of these apps is LG Health - could it be that this app as you mentioned uses sensors to update the app's info when phone moves?
Are you guys sure that it isn't that the weather got warm? It's end of summer afterall..

I'm not rooted so no way to shut it down. I'm a fan of rooting but have not done so because it's so time consuming to start moding, customizing etc one it's rooted,
I'm a flash a holic and don't want to return to those long night lol

I don't have root. Go to phone settings>apps>swipe left until you get to "All" category, then scroll to LG Health Agent and you should be able to disable it.

This happens to me, just noticed it today wearing gymshorts at work. But it only happened when the screen was toward my body, if I faced it away from me it was fine... Weird.
Probably friction. I just got 2 G4 phones Friday night and no issues so far. Been on mine constantly and the only time it got warm was when i was using navigation in Denver yesterday. This thing stays cooler than my note4.

That's was happening to me to. Disable the LG health app as few post before and it should stop it. This worked for me and you don't need to be rooted to disable apps. One note is that there are 2 LG Heath apps running 1 you can force stop and the other you can disable.
Was at a block party all day yesterday and I noticed my phone never got hot after disabling the LG health app.
Hope this helps

Rooted lg health app completely deleted :/ as for the mods I had it did it before and after I rooted so no mods still had issues. The weird part is it's instant. Like I can take the battery out for a half hour put it in turn the phone on and put it in my pocket screen facing in and it's hot till it completely boots. But the phone itself doesn't feel hot when I pull it out. It's the weirdest thing.

I know you completely deleted the LG health app. But from what I remember there are 2 LG health apps running I force stopped one and the other I disabled, don't remember the exact app names but both apps were next to each other. so just double check and make sure both LG Health are gone from your "ALL" apps view.
You can check under Settings > General > Apps >swipe 3 times to the left till you reach ALL and go down and make sure none of the 2 LG health apps is running.

I think you should try and get it replaced for a new one. I picked two brand new ones from T-Mobile on Friday night and have not had any issues with them. My wife is constantly on hers but not such a "heavy" user like me. I tried replicating the issue you're experiencing but it just doesn't get hot. Even from my usage it just feels warm like most phones so. Surprisingly this thing stays cooler than my Note 4. Way cooler! Makes me wonder how come so many people that own the G4 have issues with heat. I guess the Note 4 is hotter? I do know we used to have to figure out ways to keep the Note 4 cool on first boot because it would get so hot. Few folks actually had to put theirs in the fridge just so it could boot.
Since doing a full 10N update, with wifi on in my pocket it gets warm. I also use LG health and Google Fit. But not until I turned off wifi did it start cooling down.

Water damaged. Still functioning, but painfully so.

Hey!
Thanks for looking at this. My Droid Turbo got a little wet during a snorkeling trip. It was in a bag so I didn't think it got that much water, but once I got back to shore, it started stuttering and finally froze. I tried to get it to start but it would just seize up. Finally gave up and factory reset the phone, and kept it in rice the rest of the trip. Once I got back, I took out the logic board, let it soak in isopropyl alcohol (99.99%) for a couple hours, reassembled the phone, then let it sit in rice overnight.
This is the behavior it's currently demonstrating:
Booting the phone results in it getting to the "Droid" logo. It will linger on that and look like it's about to startup, then restart. This will loop indefinitely. (EDIT: This is no longer happening. Phone boots after 10-15 minutes after droid logo...and crashes after using Android for 5-10 minutes.)
If I enter the bootloader, I can boot up with the "Factory" setting. Then it will go through the boot up cycle, then go black after the "droid" logo. After about two minutes I'll get the "Android is starting..." prompt with the "optimizing app 1 of 8".
Once the phone gets past this, I will be in. The phone is responsive, but after awhile it will either freeze up, or completely crash and restart. I've gotten it to boot into safe mode but it still crashed.
Since I submitted, I got into Android without using the "factory" bootloader. It took nearly ten minutes after the droid logo and still crashed, but this is still an improvement?
So at this point, I'm unsure what to do next.
I bought the phone off ebay so I have no warranty or insurance. It appears that the wifi, and antenna are working, but the crashing is really annoying. Would it be possible to root and flash a custom rom? I'll take any advice at this point! Thank you!
TLDR: Phone is extremely unstable. Unusable for a daily driver. Need help getting to island of stability.
Edit: I'm taking it to UBreakIFixit tomorrow as they have a free diagnostic. I'm not really wanting to pay for anything professional unless they can guarantee the phone will be fixed.
Snorkeling? Is this salt water? If it is that makes quite a bit of dielectric paths.
