The camera starts fast. It's the focusing that may fail you. In good lighting is fast enough, but you may still end up with blurry pictures if you try to take the shot the moment the camera comes up. But in good lighting, it's usually in focus. Don't try it with lesser light.. It will need up to a second to focus
well let me put it this way... for me I returned my V20 and went back to the the S7 edge, found the 7 edge opens quicker and take`s quicker pics for me, double hit the big home button and boom there you go, and the small little voulme buttons on the V20 are a pain, I found myself hitting the volume up instead the volume down to open the camera quickly, and in general I still find the pics from the S7 edge better than the V20. but that`s my opinion, and you know what they about opinions. lol
Camera on the lg v 20 needs work. I really feel it's a software issue, hardware is very good.
I miss the Samsung camera. I don't think I can return my v20 so I'll have to deal with it. Hopefully lg release an update.
horrible video recording speed using SD Card, internal storage is a bit better but idk why there's a delay in the first place.

Is my phone broken?
I think I found the cause of it and it is a software bug/limitation (I’m on 7.0 on the Nov 6, 2017 security patch). This black screen happens when the photo size is set to 4:3 and the video resolution is different (all the video resolutions are 16:9), and you press the video record button. This only affects the stock camera when used in auto mode, and does not seem to affect third party camera apps.
While setting the photo size to 16:9 to match the video resolution, this does not solve the 1-5 seconds of delay when I press the record button and when the phone actually records. The delay seems to be less with third party apps.
Why does LG do this?

Hello guys. I am new with my milestone here and I have an important question if you have some ideas about it. However my previous phone (google G1) had 3.2 mp camera built in, its photos were quite better than my milestone which has 5 MP with flash light! I am very disapointed with its camera performance. Is this something about software and development or something about its camera lens?
Its photos are full of gren and noise in it and deffintly doesnt seem to be a 5 mpx.
Hi I have the same question. the photos has noise and I think is better my last g1.
any ideas??
Try charge your battery full if using flash.

It has nothing to do with battery because photos are bad even in full daylight! I hope this is something about firmware and can be fixed with some new software , Unless i will sell this phone.
I have also not'ced that camera flash light of this phone is not working proper when battery goes lower than 30-40 and its a shame when its night time your battery has to be higher than 50 if you want to use flash light.. But there is something weird with this because of this flash light brightes and shines so strong even battery goes low when you half press shutter button for the auto focus. then when you press for taking the photo then it wont flashes up like before. REALLY WEIRD.. I am gonna sell this odd phone. Unless those stupid mistakes wont be fixed by 2.2 upgrade. hopefully soon..
Can I ask to poeple who upgraded their droid to 2.2 is there any difference at camera performance on your droid after update ??
To be honest there is not a difference in camera performance. That all varies between the lighting and zoom level of the camera. I have noticed the grain side of the photos, however I have had some great clear photos taken with the phone as well. The video quality IMO is superb for the phone. Even before the 2.2 update I did, the pictures turned out great despite some showing a little bit of grain.
The megapixel number means nothing, and actually for a given physical sensor size (IE the ones that fit in phones) a higher MP number will mean ****tier pictures.
The performance is just how it's going to be.

well I tried to take the same photos with both stock camera program and camera 360 program, and my results were not far different from eachother but 360 photos were a bit better. Camera 360 photos were about 3-4 MB, but droids itself photos were 1 MB. I can say the MB difference didnt reflect the picture quality. they were almost same quality. so no need to use 3 times more space for ordinary photos.
I changed my camera application.
I now use the app: Pro Zoom Camera 5X
And that worked for me.
It takes better pictures.
Dont know all the reasons.
But 1 major reason for me is,
With the original, you half press the camera key to focus, then full press to take the picture.
This creates movement when taking the picture.
With the app i'm using,
you press full ones, it then focuses and takes the picture.
but you can also use the volume button, which is an easier key to press full.
or you can just tap the screen.
For me it made a huge difference.
Though,.. still not as good as we want it to be

I am not sure if the only problem was half shutter vibration on the photo problem. it seems more than that. To me It can be fixed with some software improvments but im not sure how much can it be good with new software.. Does anyone know which brand or what kind of lenses does motorola uses for milestone?

Thank You for sharing this info. I will try it myself.
so It's my understanding the camera takes about a second to wake up..
How great is it at taking pictures of things in motion? I'm not asking for anything incredibly unrealistic but, I know that my captivate tends to have problems if something is moving or it's not a still shot which can be a little annoying..
So far I've had my T for a week and the camera is one of my biggest grievences.
It takes about a second for the screen to boot into the camera mode but then takes ages (sometimes 5-6 seconds) to focus properly before it takes the shot!!
It may just be that I need to tweak the settings but a feature that is boasted like this one you would think would work out of the box.
I'll post back after I've had another play.
Focussing takes longer if the light is low. The camera should focus pretty quick in the day time. Once my S3 comes back from surgery I'll compare if the speed of this camera bothers me. It hasn't yet, though.
Sent from my LT30p using Tapatalk 2
I have the S3.. The camera on it is much better than the xperia T on pretty much everything responsiveness \ motion capture \ night - low light conditions. Maybe its the xperia app that lacks something dont know..
Sent from my LT30p using xda premium
I find the camera focus to be a bit of a nuisance too but I find if I type on the screen where to focus the image it will sort itself out in maybe 2 seconds tops ready to snap the picture. It could be down to light conditions but my experiences with the cameras been okay.
From what I was expecting from Sony's advertising the camera is a let down. The app is nice to use and I love having the dedicated button. However focusing seems to be a bit hit or miss. Certainly compared to my old OneX. Hoping that it'll be improved with some software updates as the hardware should be quite decent?

I've been using the Xperia GX for 2 months now since it launched in the summer but it should be similiar to the T/TX (well, exactly the same as the TX)
Waking up / Firing up the camera quickly
If the camera process is not running it will take 5-6 seconds to start up.
If it is running, then it is much faster. When it is running in the background it does not consume a lot of resources (in particular it doesn't really impact battery life since that is the single worst part of the GX/TX)
Be sure to check your camera settings as well for the "Quick Launch" settings.
This has been seen on several Xperia devices but here's briefly how it works.
When the phone is asleep, you hold down the camera button. It takes about a half second for recognize the long press then will fire up and take the shot in less than another half second. You can change your setting to choose whether it does nothing, fires up the camera, or fires up the camera plus takes the shot.
If you use a screen unlock pattern, you will still take the photo and subsequent photos but you cannot go to view/share/etc the photo until completing the unlock. This is to both give you security while not stopping you from quickly taking photos.
Pictures of things in motion
I was surprised that it takes pictures very quickly with little shutter lag. The day after I got the phone, I went to climb Mount Fuji and was surprised I could take clear photos of the foliage whizzing by outside the bus window.
That being said, that only really works in well lit conditions.
In well lit conditions, it can focus quickly 150-400ms but like others have said, this is not the case in low light (or when the device starts to overheat or when bogged down with apps running and demanding wakelock).
If you use the quick capture feature, it will guess the focus and take the shot.

By default, its set to face recognition and thats what delays it. Change the settings on the camera app and you would see the full glory of it
really? in the shops i was hands on-ing with the xperia t , and whenever i tapped the big capture button it would instantly capture even if i clicked many times , like a burst shot.. so does my old phone ray but it laggs a bit

Launches pretty fast with double-click of home button.
Fast even with HDR+ in optimal lighting.
Is the autofocus faster than the asus zenfone laser?
It's been extremely slow for me even to open, nevermind capture a picture. I do not have HDR on and this is after the supposed update that would make things quicker.
Camera is quick enough for me - I usually just do point an shoot pictures.
I think camera launch speed is a hit or miss sometimes.
Most of the time it is quick. But at times, it takes like up to an second before the viewfinder comes on from black screen.
totally hit or miss. but i feel most of the time it's about 5-10 seconds from double hit power button to blue shutter button to take a pic. coming from an S6 which really marketed the **** out of their fast launch camera, this is night and day. Nexus needs to pick up some speed.

It never takes longer than 2 seconds for me. I've compared it to my Nexus 5 and it's consistently 1 second faster to load the camera and ready to take a picture with HDR+ enabled.
You might have some background processes eating up your resources during the time it takes 5-10 seconds to load your camera. We can assume that is caused by one of your 3rd party apps. Most likely one that hasn't been properly updated to support Android 6.0.
Camera is Bugged
camera is slow af to load compared to an s6 or any iOS device
trick i found for 3-4s off to capture time
just got a 5x, but found the shortcuts to camera too slow.
i worked out a trick which consistently gives me short capture times.
seems to work with any camera app; i use Camera X for burst.
prep work:
- allow fingerprint unlock
- launch desired camera app
- turn phone off
- pocket the thing and wait for... the moment.
- unlock with fingerprint and ...
- ... tap volume down to take a photo, or hold for burst
the biggest downside? the AF is slow, so my subject (a toddler) is often too quick / out of focus.
Happy with camera
Apparently 2 seconds from the phone being off to taking a HDR+ picture is slow to some people?
My camera always loads in 2 seconds and can snap HDR+ pictures in succession with zero delay (it processes in the background).
Compared to my N5, the camera is noticeably faster and the image quality is better too.
Not the fastest camera but launches preety fast. It takes some time to focus and take a pictures. For the cost they shoud have improved this.
Oh man, after the April Update, camera launches and focuses so much faster. I am amazed.
From lock to take a picture, sometimes slow or even could not connect to camera. When I just got the phone it seemed fine, now I can't rely. Would 85% storage full affect it somehow?
Sometimes indeed it has some af issues (my toddler is sometimes faster than Nexus apparently) but there are very rare occasions. I take a bunch of photos and I've never experienced any real problem. Camera is responsive, and there is always the opportunity to take another shot
Camera Speed improved with nougat, especially hdr processing
Not fast enough, definitely can't compare with S7 Edge.

I felt bad when tried at showroom, it took a little bit of time to save picture. But when I bought it and be installed latest 5.1.1, the time to take and save a picture is less than 1 second.
I think camera app start-up is reasonable but the shutter lag is unacceptable. I once photographed a seagull standing on a bridge and it was still standing when I pressed the shutter but the sensor captured it flying away...
https://www.dropbox.com/s/j5hcj2jeazzjs77/DSC_0988.JPG?dl=0
Not good. App takes too long to start, can't take quick bursts of photos and the images take too long to save. It's a real shame.

I agree. Really not good at all, especially since many other phones on the market take photos in the blink of an eye.
Long time Sony fan. App launch and shutter lag pathetic. Sometimes it takes 3 - 5 seconds to actually take the picture!
It's really bad with Flash ON/Auto, much quicker if you switch it off.
Since Marshmallow it's a little bit better, but it's still way slower than the Galaxy S6/S7. Even my old Galaxy Note 3 was faster. I expected better from that phone in the camera department, and I don't blame the sensor... I think the app is the culprit. Compared to Samsung, LG, HTC and Apple, Sony probably has the worst stock camera app
I think the only way you can minimize it is using the shutter button. Using the on-screen button will slow it down cause more lag because it autofocuses once again. The thing is the Z5 always captures the frame directly after "capture" instead of the current frame. I had an old Sony point-and-shoot from over 10 years ago and it was able to pause immediately to save the frame the moment the button was pressed.
It's even worse on third-party apps because taking a picture causes the camera to autofocus first and struggle for a considerable time before taking the picture.
It's probably poor optimization but I highly doubt Sony will fix it, even though it seems to have improved in the X/X Performance. Now they're claiming 0.6 shutter response from standby and "nearly instantaneous" normal shutter response.
apart than camera launch time, that is depending on various parameters, disable the "photo analyzer" app. The picture save time will be increased dramatically as the phone will not search for faces , etc
Timing to take picture is fast, there is no phone on the market that focusing faster than Z5.Only when you taking bigh resolution photos 23/20 mpx phone needs about second or two to save it.

Depends on conditions. The camera is very slow at auto-focus. In daylight and a stationary target, there's no noticable shutter lag. At night and/or moving target, it can be a few seconds enough that you miss whatever you were trying to video. Video seems to always take a few seconds to start recording. The camera also does not seem to support zoome of any kind. If I attempt to zoom at all, the picture quality seems to become horrible for some reason.
As for time from screen off, it seems to vary. sometimes the camera app is up in less than a second, sometimes I have to wait a second or two.
last day I worked with my friend's LG v10 fast and smooth UI and great Pictures that I never had chance to took with 23 megapixel z5!
SOC 810 IN Z5 and 808 in v10 and 23 megapixel against 16 , something wrong that Sony can't fix this ! yet.

Can you show a screen-recording showing there's no shutter lag? Many users here have noticed - take a picture of cars passing by and you can see it always skips a frame (I would estimate 1/20 of a second).
Xperia X boasts 0.6 second capture from startup yet they won't bring such optimizations onto the Z5. perhaps some of it is due to the hardware, but just about EVERY other high-end phone has nearly no shutter lag, even those with 20+MP sensors.
I said " In daylight and a stationary target, there's no noticeable shutter lag." A car passing by isnt stationary so the auto-focus has to do some work. I don't think 1/20 of a second is noticeable to most people. I mean most movies are around 1/24 of a second and you dont notice. I think for a real camera, 1/6th of a second is about average. 1/20th might be for pre-focused.
I dont have another camera so I can't time it. I tried using a timer on my laptop and taking a photo of my screen while clicking my mouse to start the timer at the same time.
If my phone is in the right mood, using the camera button, I can get a photo off in just less than 2 seconds.
The shutter lag seemed to be about 0.3 seconds. Now if I repeatedly tapped the shutter button, it seemed to be as fast as 0.1 seconds.
So in the right conditions, I think it is pretty fast. In the wrong conditions, its horrible.

I already half-pressed the shutter button so that autofocus is locked - it still captures the frame after the screen flashes. Using manual mode at 8MP with sports mode speeds things up a little bit. Some people on this forum have disabled thermal throttling and the lag is significantly reduced, but is still present. The final capture press after autofocus is determined should be virtually instantaneous regardless of conditions, as it is on iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and many other phones. While there is still some input lag (which is something like 5ms) and the autofocus also slow things down, this is what companies call "zero shutter lag" - even if it isn't 100% true it is still reasonable. Sony Xperia always skips a frame after the shutter button is pressed and that is your final image. This may seem like nothing but for action shots this is unacceptable. And it's not because the sensor is higher resolution as HTC M9+ Supreme Camera Edition has a 21MP Sony sensor that is just as fast as the iPhone 6 or Galaxy S7. So currently, the Z5 is a terrible choice for instant action shots.
It's even worse for video - it always takes me 1-2 seconds for the phone to film the first video. A second video is much faster, but videos showing the Xperia X has much faster video capture on the first go.
I remember Kit-Kat times and Sony burst mode.
Some users now what i am talking about...
Guys what is going on. Software should be faster and faster... I personally bought z5 mainly because of the promises that camera is top nodge and now i can see that is not... Period and i am sory to say that, as huge Sony fan.
Bottom line is that you can have all MP in the world, fancy smancy auto focus, addons and so on, when post-processing is bad, user experience is bad allso.
I'm also annoyed that video and camera buttons are not on the same interface, and you need to swipe. Some people prefer it because they accidentally film video instead of taking a photo, but it would be better if they gave an option, since the initial release had both on the same interface.
And I can't understand why there is no burst mode... Some claim the hardware is too slow but my friend said he had it on the Z3, and HTC M9+ Supreme Camera has it as well (I only tried briefly). I was deciding between the HTC and the Z5 and went for the Z5 because I thought the camera would be better and also because it has quick-charge and runs on a Qualcomm SoC (I was well aware of the overheating issues, but I'd rather have an SoC that is reliable with updates - the M9+ is still on Lollipop in many places!)
No matter what settings I use my camera is very slow, slow to launch and slow to take picture. I normally have to hold the phone still for a second after I press the shutter to make sure it has take the picture properly. It is not terrible but certainly not as quick as other flagships on the market.
I am going to to a master reset of the phone today to see if it helps, I shall report back!
I have taken the plunge and did a factory reset on my phone. It's too soon to tell whether it's had any effect on camera launch speed but let everyone know once I've used it for a bit longer.
Hi, I bought a P9 that is yet to arrive but the other day I was using my friends P9 and wanted to try the camera in pro mode (which is the mode that I use the most on my phones) and I noticed that after some speeds, when playing with shutter speed, the viewfinder image just stops updating the amount of light that should enter ie. I'm indoors with artificial light and if I set the speed to the fastest posible the viewfinder does not go black (and it stops showing the differences in lightning way before the fastest shutterspeed). Same goes the other way, if I set the speed to a ver very low one the viewfinder does not end up looking white, so it makes this feature useless cause the only way I have to see if I'm using the correct speed is to take the shot and then open the picture to see if it was the correct speed. I noticed this happening also in the Huawei Mate 8. I'm used to the LG G4 wich every step of the shutter speed shows a difference in lightning in the image your watching. Is there a way to fix this? does this happend with every Huawei phone? I haven't got the phone yet but I'm already thinking of selling it and getting an S7
I am also coming from an LG G4 and found the lack of feedback in terms of how much light I get by changing different setting, as I major drawback. To answer your question: yes, all Huawei phones seem to lack this feature. The only option is to take a shoot at that setting and adjust back and forth, per the exposure you see on the picture taken.

thanks a lot, I'm really going to miss G4's camera app along with it camera quality so I think I'm gonna sell the p9 as soon as I get it and get an S7, the pro mode in a camera is way too important to me to withstand this Huawei bug like behavior =/
If you lock the shutter speed, then by changing to different ISO values you get a good feedback on the live screen related how much light gets in. But unfortunately does not work the other way around which is equally important, to lock the ISO and play with shutter speed. So it`s a half of drawback but still annoying.
