C6903 unlocking -> root -> drm -> recovery. - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guides are over detailed and confusing...
I installed kingroot long ago to try get somewhere.
This has screwed up the stock update system and root is lost after each reboot.
So time to go full custom in hopes that the phone will be able to update and run root apps, be junk free and run like a beast.
i have read so many thread for months now and i am getting more and more confused.
i'm on 5.1.1.
please if anyone has the time run me thru the process.

What do you mean root is lost after each reboot??
And what exactly are you trying to achieve?

If i use kingroot and reboot root no longer works.
So i have to root again.
I want to pretty much reflash stock or switch to custom rom.
My stock rom is acting very sick.

Oh OK. But u shouldnt mess with DRM keys or the bootloader on your first go - flashing a stock based custom ROM is what you should do. Its a good start for a newbie
1. Root ur phone using kingroot
2. Install XZDR - XZ dual recovery ( it installs a recovery for flashing ROMs and mods)
3. Download your ROM of choice( dstrikers , kryptonian etc are stock based and hence donot require an unlocked bootloader, u can flash them straight and not have to worry about anything else.)
4. Reboot to recovery ( after installing XZDR you get an app that let's you reboot to recovery)
5. Wipe the data partition( as the name suggests , it contains all ur apps and data , so back up everything) so that all the old settings and configuration doesn't mess up your new ROM.
6. Flash the ROM and reboot
7. There, you have a custom ROM on your phone
It might be confusing at first but there are lots of videos on YouTube detailing each of the steps above watch them.
Have fun.

ahh thanks!
you legend.

Glad to know I helped

[Q] Can not unlock Bootloader

I am almost too chicken to post because reading all the developer threads I feel like such a noob.
I recently rooted my Nexus One, thanks to a developer that created a painless one button rooting app. The problem is after downloading and installing many apps that require superuser access I am finding out that I am limited in what I can do without unlocking the bootloader.
I want to find a theme that replaces the standard white bar "which will cause screen burn" with a black bar.
I backed up all my apps, "Titanium Back Up"
I backed up my ROM??? "Maybe not" using a program call Rom Backup. "I have not figure out how to to nandroid backup "not sure the right name"
I googled found many procedures on unlocking the bootloader but I can not get it work.
Download ADK
Found a place that has Fastboot download it
I even found out I need to copy file from ADK folder to the Fastboot folder
Held down the power button trackball got the correct screen "even though my old eyes have a hard time reading the little character"
connected my phone
Ran the batch file
It returns saying wait for device.
The device is connected, in the right mode, my device manage says the is an Android device connected.......
But no matter what I do I can not get the screen warning me that to unlock my bootloader I void my warranty.
I found here some theme labled that hey work Nexus One 2.2 and I want to try them but Metamprgh will not load new themes on a radio that has a locked bootloader.
I am not worried about losing my warranty I live in Canada if I ever need warranty work it be a hassle anyway.
I thought unlock the bootloader.
When the phone powers up login my Google Account, reload Titanium Back up to restore my my phone.
Back up the Rom once more using Rom Backup if I want to recover my stock Rom
Run Metamorph and play with the themes
But I can not unlock the bootloader ....... "waiting for device"
How can I unlock the Bootloader, I there a more current method?
What can I be doing wrong I see a device in my Device Manager?
Will my method for restoring my phone work, never done a full phone wipe?
FYI this forum is scary there should but a developer and a Noob section.
You don't need to unlock your bootloader. My bootloader is locked and I'm rooted. It seems like you're missing superuser.apk. You need that too allow all of the programs like ROM manager and Titanium Backup root permissions. I'm not sure how the one click app works but I know that it probably should have installed the superuser application to allow those apps root access. Check and see if its in your application draw. You might want to try "one click rooting again" because it seems like it didn't work.
Side note: Titanium Backup does not back up your ROM. It just backs up apps and their data stored on your phone so it can be restored when you flash a new ROM. The way you back up your ROM is through the android custom recovery using the nandroid feature.
Thanks Magma,
Yes Superuser is installed.
A program wants superuser access I can grant it.
Metamorph does do several checks and it needs superuser access.
It is my understanding superuser access gives apps access to system hardware but if you want to use Metamorph to change the standard Android Shell that is going to modify your ROM and you will need and unlocked bootloader.
Here is what happens when I run Metamorph it finds the zipped files on my SD card, I select a file, it exacts the package, I say update al .... PLEASE WAIT for 20 or 30 minutes, it may then tell me to reboot but nothing happens my theme is still stock Android 2.2
This is where you can find out about and download the One Click Root App, it is in this section themes and apps.
It roots you device but leaves the bootloader alone
I know titanium backup just restores all your applications and data. The way I understand it if I ever need to do a master reset, I login Google, download Titanimum back up use it to restore every thing else. Yes which every ROM I was running will not be touched.
I am pretty sure I need to unlock the Bootloader.
But to unlock my Bootloader I just as I said get please wait I tried everything.
Alright man, you need the Android sdk for your OS so go to the android site and get the SDK, then install drivers for phone, and you NEED a custom recovery to do a NANDROID of the ROM, from what i understand your like me
have everything stock but with root privileges! and i from what i know as of now, unlockBoot loader gives you the option to do fastboot, if you want to continue messing around with stuff i highly suggest you flash custom recovery like Amon-Ra or even clockwork(from market) then go to Nandroid back up, then flash a custom rom like Enomther's Rom that is nice and stock clean stable, but still able to do themes

Wow lot to digest. I do have and install Android SDK the instructions in the tutorial I googled said I needed it, The Fastboot command needed files in the ADK directory.
The thing is since my command window did not see a device,
With your Nexus One in bootloader mode and connected to your computer via USB cable, go back to the command prompt and type “fastboot-windows oem unlock”.
Would even be able to flash anything?
At the end of the day I am very happy with Android 2.2 and I do not think I want custom roms at least for now. All I want is to get Metamorph to work so I can change how it looks.
try to type fastboot oem unlock
You do not need to unlock.
You used the one click root.
Now download Rom Manager and flash the Clockwork Recovery.
There, now you suddenly have a custom recovery, can flash custom roms, and flash custom themes on top of the roms.
And you still have a locked bootloader.
You don't even need to manually go into the recovery to flash your roms and themes, Rom Manager will do it for you. Chose the rom or update.zip file for the theme and it will automatically reboot and flash it for you.
From clockwork you can also make a backup of your phone. Through Rom Manager choose to back it up, and it will restart and do a nandroid backup for you automatically.
try to type fastboot oem unlock (Done but it just responds wait for device)
Now download Rom Manager Done and it seemed to back up my OEM Rom no problem and flash the Clockwork Recovery. Question is this over writing existing Nexus One ROM because as I said since really have nothing against OEM ROM I would like to keep it?
There, now you suddenly have a custom recovery, can flash custom roms, and flash custom themes on top of the roms. At this point my phone would be powered up with the Clockwork Recovery ROM? I want to use Metamorph to flash themes on top of the Nexus One ROM
And you still have a locked bootloader.Well if Clock Recovery does the job and at the end of the day I get OEM 2.2 ROM which I can theme with Metamorph I am ok never unlocking the Bootloader.
You don't even need to manually go into the recovery to flash your roms and themes, Rom Manager will do it for you. Chose the rom or update.zip file for the theme and it will automatically reboot and flash it for you.
Yes Understood I have the program
From clockwork you can also make a backup of your phone. Through Rom Manager choose to back it up, and it will restart and do a nandroid backup for you automatically. But as the questions above do I really what to keep the Clockwork Recovery ROM. I do not know what the Clockwork recovery ROM does but I do just want to theme my Nexus One OEM ROM.
So let me see if I got the steps straight.
Head to the download section find the Clockwork recovery ROM.
Copy it to my SD Card.
Open ROM Manager and install it.
Reboot my Nexus One, the ROM manager forces the Reboot and I will be running my phone with Special ROM, old version of Android?
Then do I load my back my OEM ROM and modify it with Metamorph?
or is what loading the Clockwork ROM actually do is it is not a full ROM when I load it with ROM Manager what it does is add to my existing OEM ROM. This process will then let me modify the ROM with themes. When I reboot after loading the Clockwork ROM I will find the phone looks and behaves the same as always "running Android 2.2" but the Clockwork ROM will add files and when I use Metamorph it will work......
............. Man I am such a noob, but i guess at one time we were all noobs.
You are still mixed up:
Clockwork is not a rom. It is just replaces the stock recovery.
To install the Clockwork Recovery you:
1. Download Rom Manager
2. Press the first item "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery"
Done, nothing has changed, except your recovery partition is now different, which allows the flashing of other stuff.
Anything you do from now on could wipe your curent install, so make sure things are backed up in case you want to go back.
Now from Rom Manager you can flash any other rom or update.zip
The biggest issue you might face is that I don't think you can theme the stock froyo rom. You will need a special de-odexed rom. So you would have to go to the development section and find a custom 'stock' rom. Then flash that one though Rom Manager.
Keep in mind, when you do all this, you will not get any OTA updates anymore either, unless you flash back to the real stock rom and the stock recovery. But most people don't care, since the custom roms will be updated eventually to the latest, if not before.

I need to learn how to use the search better. If I had read this first I assume I could have updated the radio without unlocking the bootloader. arg.
Yes I did not understand, ROM Manager first entry is Clockwork Recovery.
You said I can install themes using ROM manager?
I click on "Install ROM from SD Card", I had a pretty scary moment not know what I am doing I tried it the phone reboot to an "exclamation mark and Android". I pulled the battery and it booted.
This make me wonder if yor find an unstable theme or ROM how can you use ROM manager to restore a backup?
Could the reason Metamorph did not work is having "Clockwork Recovery"?

Sorry, but I am going to have to recommend you do a lot more reading in the development section, the wiki, and all the sticky posts. Don't try anything until you understand how linux works, partitions, bootloaders, how Android roms work, even how a metamorph works.
Spend a few weeks or a month reading about everything, through the whole threads before trying to jump in. That's how I learned everything.
You seem intelligent enough to do everything, but what you lack is an actual understanding of what those things are, so you just need to spend a lot more time on it.
When you do fully understand everything, it will be a breeze and you will enjoy it a lot more. You will be less likely to completely screw your phone, and if you do you will know exactly how to recover.
I need to learn how to use the search better. If I had read this first I assume I could have updated the radio without unlocking the bootloader. arg.
You saying yes it is true I need to unlock bootloader?

You maybe right, maybe I should give up for now. Learn to do a backup and restore using nandroid. Just not sure how much time I am willing to invest just to gain the able to put themes on my phone.

Yeah, you shouldn't do anything yet, read up on stuff for fun until you know what is going on.
For instance, in what I quoted above, you understood the exact opposite of what he was saying.
He was upset that he didn't find out about this way to root before he unlocked. He didn't have to unlock and is now disappointed he did.
OP. What ROM are you currently running? Stock FRF91 or something else?
To my understanding you need a De-Odexed ROM to apply themes that modify the framework.

After rooting, did the SuperUser App appear in the app drawer?, if so, the phone was rooted and the steps you took appear fine to flash the ROM. Don't know what you mean by it didn't work (error msgs or what?) Also, don't know what or how you're trying to download something. Perhaps if you can provide more information, we can help
I'd suggest reading this post here.
Also I would have him Odin 1-click back to stock and start over.
Plus in the future please post what the error was as it would help determine your next troubleshooting steps better.
Yes superuser did appear in the app drawer.
When we tryed to flash it said operation aborted i dont know why.
And he is trying to download apps. from the market and its not working lol
Yup.. I'd flash back to stock then re-root. Sounds like something went screwy when you attempted to flash the ROM.
We restored the back up before attempting to flash the rom so would that be okay instead of flashing back to stock?
Also is there a way to back up all the apps so if do flash back to stock we can get them back instead of re downloading everything again?

First ROM

Hi,
I have some experience with ROMing but I really do only basic staff. First of all, info:
Device is SGS1, with an Israeli operator stock ROM (2.2), not rooted, not SIM free.
Never messed with an SGS before, only Atrix and used to doing everything easily with ROM Manager but on SGS I'm reading about Udin, flash stock before custom ROMs etc and decided to stop and ask...
Is it possible to simply, root, install ROM Manager, flash CWM recovery and get going (nandroid and full wipe before installation of course)? This is what I did on the Atrix (with the addition of unlocking the BL which I understood is not needed here)
Again, I just want basic ROM flashing the way I am used to with the Atrix
Thanks!
You can enter the recovery with the stock ROM. Power off your phone, then when its completely off, hold volume up+home key+power button then wait for the recovery to show up.
Not following you.
The device doesn't even have root. Is the BL really unlocked from stock? Is it ok to do everything with ROM Manager all the time as long as I do a full wipe?

The easiest way would be flashing a Gringerbred Firmeware that is alerady rooted.
Try and follow these instructions: http://www.darkyrom.com/index.php?threads/odin-darkyrom-10-2-resurrection-gt-i9000.4272/
After installing that Rom, your Phone will have unlocked BL, Root-rights and other Stuff You'll need for flashing.
Just give it a try you can use Rom Manager as well after following and flashing that Rom
Edit: If you flashed that custom Rom you are abel to flash all other Roms like these Stock Roms: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=948790
Just read a while and don't forget to make Backups of your User Data and your EFS-Folder!!

[Q] Unable to start WiFi after flashing CWM 6.0.2.8 and 6.0.3.1 on custom JB ROM

Hello All,
I am on stock v4.1.2, flashed myself.
Now I want to move on to custom ROM.
My current stock ROM is rooted, and I have also unlocked my bootloader.
Now when I want to install custom ROM, I need to flash CWM, and when I do (tried v6.2.8 and v6.0.3.1), and install any ROM, my WiFi becomes unresponsive (failed to turn on). When I flash V20A back, everything turns normal.
I also gone through http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2180138&page=43, and install the unsecure boot image after installing CWM 6028, but this make my custom rom hang on startup (on bootload screen).
Kindly help me out.
I have search a lot in the P880 forum, and didn't find any help regarding to this problem.

i dont understand what the recovery has to do with the wifi. recovery is just an interface to easy install something, copy paste , edit , change permissions , etc , things we do using adb commands. it is just an environment. its something else u are doing wrong there.
<EDIT> yea i saw the thread on your link. others seem to have same problem but with the unsecure boot. why do u need unsecure boot if the bootloader is unlocked ? just install teamwin recovery or cwm recovery and the rom u want.

Well, I did. And it all went fine, and I am able to install various custom ROMs, and after I install custom ROM, my WiFi becomes unresponsive. I am completely at lost. I also tried MIUI v5 which is non-CM10.2 based, and it also showed the same issue.
Here are my steps to install a custom ROM.
- Currently I am on my V20A stock ROM.
- Root the stock ROM using the All-In-One-Toolkit v1.4.1
- Flush the CWM 6031 using ADB as
Code:
su
cat /mnt/sdcard/recovery.img > /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
sync
- After reboot, my device has the CWM.
- Copy custom ROM zip files to my device, and reboot to recovery
- Wipe out by data and cache
- Install ROM
thats it
And when I boot into the new custom ROM, my WiFi do not work.
Please help.

not exactly.
And here are my steps to install a custom ROM (if currently I am on my V20A stock ROM)
1. Root the stock ROM using the All-In-One-Toolkit v1.4.1
2. Unlock bootloader using All-In-One-Toolkit v1.4.1 or manually like this.
3. Flash the CWM 6.0.4.5 or 6.0.4.4 or TeamWin Recovery
4. Reboot the device in recovery.
5. Enter ADB sideload and install custom rom or using ADB bootloader or using ADB copy the rom in sd card and use install in recovery.
6. Wipe data and cache and reboot system.

I did wipe the data and cache after installing the custom ROM. But the result is the same; No WiFi response.
However, I always copy my custom ROMs by mounting my phone through USB to my Win8 laptop, and then copy the ROM file through windows explorer. And then install the ROM from the CWN recovery. Thus do not use ADB for copying files, or installing custom ROM as mentioned above. If this is the main issue reason, then advice.
Also I haven't tried TWRP till yet. Will do now. Till then, what else I can do.
Thanks for the quick replies.
i dont know what else you may doing wrong then. one was the insecure boot which is useless since u have unlocked the bootloader and the other that u had flash older version of cwm recovery. maybe compatibility issue with that version of cwm rec ? test and see.
format system also, when installing a new rom, not just data, cache & dalvik

One piece of detail I missed to mentioned in my case previously was that, I unlocked my phone using the method mentioned in the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2263627 as I was unable to unlock using the official method.
After I unlock my bootloader, I have flashed V20A KDZ several times, and each time the SW Upd mode show me that my bootloader status is unlocked. Thus after first attempt of unlocking, I never came across need to unlocked my bootloader again as each time when I do the KDZ flash, I get the bootloader status as unlocked. And after each flash of KDZ, I was able to install CWM and custom ROMs, and boot into them successfully.
Is this something causing the issue?

sorry , personally i dont know what else u may doing wrong there . and no it doesnt matter which way u unlock the phone, but since u unlock it , it stays that way until u lock it.
at least stock rom is working fine ? if that works fine there, then just install only custom kernel, do your tweaks, install another launcher and then delete the default, etc. u can do any modification u like to the stock one to make it look and work the way u want it.

Does it help if I installed a custom kernel on my custom ROM (with WiFi issue). My understanding is that the WiFi driver is compiled inside the kernel. So changing the kernel might reduce the issue. What do you think? If yes, then kindly advice me on which kernel should I install on my till now custom ROM MIUI v5 http://en.miui.com/download-79.html.

a developer would never release a rom in public with wifi issues by default and since i have already tested all roms available before i end up to one, i can say that they all worked , but only had small bugs on homescreen. really i dont know what you are doing wrong and not even a teamviewer connection wouldnt help in this case. but on stock your phone works fine ? only in a custom rom u have this issue ?
<<EDIT>> did you also do a full format before going to another rom ? there is a choice in teamwin recovery ( dont know if its in cwm also ) to format data. careful i dont mean to wipe everything you see because you will remove the recovery too and u will have to flash it back. the format option deletes everything besides the recovery. if you dont format before you go to a totally different rom, then you maybe have issues. especially when going from stock to custom, differences are huge. you must format before flashing. and dont forget the gapps, if they are not inluded in rom. ( in your case miui there must have them inside, because i see its 256 mb+)

YES. When I flashed stock V20A, I never had issues with Wifi. Its when I install custom ROM, and any custom ROM.
So I suppose, either there is something wrong in my installing method, or in my stock ROM that won't allow WiFi to work on any custom ROM. But how much influential will be the stock ROM if it is being replaced by a custom ROM?
Well, I haven't formated before I install any custom ROM, as it was not instructed in the forums. But I will do that now, and let you know the results shortly.
Thanks again for the replies.

yea some informations are always missing from the instructions generally , but this is a developer forum , so it doesnt always include informations that are 100% well known to be done. So format and install again and tell me if its everything ok.

Can you direct me how to install a custom ROM using ADB? Since when I format my /data, all of my custom roms that I copied will get deleted. So the only remaining option is to copy them using ADB.

What?????
Why would wiping your /data folder on internal storage delete your custom ROMs? Surely you keep them on your external SD-Card?

you dont need to copy it . u can open adb sideload from recovery and on pc use command : adb sideload [path/filename of rom.zip]

So you are saying that, I copy them to external_sd, and then do the data format. Ok ... Will do and let you know.
BTW, I also found V20B. I will start with this stock rom instead of V20A. This might improves some thing.

AT LAST .... FIXED ...
I did two things, V20B, and format /system, /data before installing new ROM. So my steps were:
1) Flush V20B instead of V20A
2) After rooting, and installed CWM 6044 touch, copy custom ROM MIUI to external SDCARD
3) Reboot into recovery, and format /system, /data, and /cache partitions
4) Install custom ROM from external SDCARD
5) Wipe data and cache
6) Reboot into the new world
:good: formatting did the work sorry i didnt think of it earlier.

[Q] will i lose root while upgrading to 12.1.A.1.201 from 12.1.A.0.266?

Hi,
I'm currently running stock 4.3 (12.1.A.0.266). My phone is ROOTED, but have LOCKED BOOTLOADER. I have
My question is simple: will I lose root? Or any apps/data/sms/etc for that matter?
I just don't want to do all the stuff all over again. 12.1.A.0.266 is buggy but still is tolerable. >.>

Yes, you'll lose root if you update via OTA or flashing stock.
However, I think OTA does not wipe data, so you'll probably have your data. Do back them up just in case (can't remember since it's been a while since I last update via OTA ).
If you want rooted .201, install either of these roms:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2704312
(v1.1 looks and works like 201)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2658043
(v2 is a much "improved" version of the above)
I have installed the first one and loved it.
A few days ago I installed the second one and loved it even more.
Whatever you do, do a nandroid backup of your .266 (and preferably, add titanium backup of your apps and data/sms/contacts)

Yup - screwed up somewhere in the process but no worries.
The process is almost the same way you got your .266 root.
To get new root and recoveries:
a. Flashtool - choose .257, then follow prompt to hook in your usb cable while pressing the Vol-down button
b. Once complete, close flashtool, unplug your device and reboot device
c. Once loaded and past the minor set up, turn on usb debugging and check "unknown sources" (all under settings)
d. Assuming you have all adb drivers installed (through flashtool installation), hook up your device to the PC and install Doomlord's exploit V18 and recoveries
Install new root 201
Boot into recoveries and flash the said .201 rom+SU+recovery (all zip files) using TWRP. Make sure you wipe cache/dalvik cache/data first. After flashing the zip files, select reboot from TWRP, and let the phone run a bit as it sets itself up (android and sony) during the booting process.
Note:
Ultimate purexsp V2.1 zip is simply an update file (not the full rom) - don't flash this one yet.
Somewhere within the thread you'll find the V2 full rom <663MB in size (as seen in my ext SD card). Flash this one and ignore the other versions
Edit:
Here it is:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51733368&postcount=423
