wifi completely dead on stock Nexus 6 running Android 7.0 - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I am running android 7.0 on my nexus. I updated to android 7 about 2 weeks back and the device was working perfectly until yesterday when all of a sudden the wifi stopped working. What I am facing is this:
I turn on the wifi and I dont see any network although my laptop and some other android devices are connected to the SSID.
I have both 2.4G and 5GHz SSID but the phone cannot see any network (it keeps on searching for networks endlessly).
I have performed a network setting reset, a factory reset, even re installed the factory image but no luck.
I am still not sure whether it is a hardware damage because the phone did not fall or came in contact with water or any such thing.
please guide.
Thanks,
Sid.

Hi, I forgot to mention that. I have also performed a reboot for modem and router too . Plus, my phone cannot see any network. I checked with other devices and there are about 8 to 10 SSIDs around my home and I see none of them.
If you would like to see some specific log files, then please guide me and I will attach them here.
Thanks,
Sid.

Check radio version and if not latest flash 42 radio from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3066052 I had similar issue on MM and fixed it by reflashing modem zip.

Hi,
I checked my baseband version. I am using the latest one.
following are the details that I see in the bootloader section:
Bootloader = moto-apq8084-71.21
Baseband = D4.01-9625-05.42+FSG-9625-02.113
The Link also shows the same baseband version as this one.
Are you suggesting that I should flash only the "radio.modem.img" that inside the downloaded zip?
Thanks,
Sid.

I flashed zip as is from TWRP. No harm in updating radio again to same version it may fix the issue.

Hi,
I re-flashed the radio using the zip file through TWRP but still no luck!
Could it be an issue of a broken driver binary?
I also flashed cyanogenmod 13 and the WiFi did not work even then.
Thanks,
Sid.

Hi All,
Quick Update. I have noticed that my bluetooth is also not working. It cannot find any bluetooth devices around while I have my laptop's bluetooth turned on and visible to devices.
My laptop cannot detect the phone's bluetooth either.
I tried creating a wifi hotspot to check if I can see the created wifi AP but that is not visible to other devices too.!
After searching a bit on internet I found out that Nexus 6 uses a single BroadCom BCM4356 Controller that has both 802.11ac + Bluetooth 4.1 functionality.
If it is indeed a hardware damage issue, shouldn't it be considered under manufacturing defect and be replaced/repaired even though my phone warranty has expired this august?

If your warranty is expired, you'll have to pay to get the motherboard replaced. Especially as there is a 4-month gap between warranty expiration and now.

Hi All,
Thanks a lot guys for your help. One last question before I decide to use this phone as a paperweight for now:
I noticed that when I check my data usage in settings. I see two modes.
1.) Cellular data usage.
2.) WiFi data usage.
In Cellular data usage, the Billing Cycle is set to start from 14th of every month and, hence, the graph in usage statistics is from Nov-14 to Dec-13. which shows some activity because I am using it.
However, In WiFi usage, It says 0B used between Oct 18 - Nov 15. But, when I open the statistics, the timeline in the graph says Jan 1, 1970. Isn't that unusual?
Is it normal to see that time? Assuming that the hardware has gone bad, aren't the statistics built by android processes and hence should have correct timeline?
I am attaching 3 screenshots for reference.
Thanks a lot,
Sid,

Wifi problems

I bought a second-hand G1(no data plan) since I wanted to play with my phone. It ran 1.6 DMD64 stock with the newest radio; and it had WiFi problems.I did some research before purchasing and knew it could be flashed; so I tried flashing it to a modern ROM to see if that would solve the problems. After figuring out it was an American phone(I live in Holland) I managed to root it and flash CM6RC2. I now sometimes have a lot of reception; sometimes not. I tried installing WiFiReEnabler and WifiFixer; WifiFixer made connections overall a bit more stable; but half of the time I still don't have WiFi. I also tried to use my laptop's WiFi for my phone via USB; followed the instructions but failed. My phone managed to get semi-bricked 3 times in that period(stuck at G1 screen), and I tried flashing another ROM too; so I flashed CM 4 times. I'm using a Belkin N1 wireless router; switched channels, security and looked at my keyphrase.
The problems I have with WiFi:
- Not finding my router even though being quite close to it; happened only with 2 of the 5 times I flashed
- Finding my router but not connecting; happened 3 of the 5 times I flashed
- Saying that it's connected but not allowing me to browse; happened all times but WifiFixer occassionally fixes this
I'm still running CM6RC2 with Amon Ra recovery 1.7 on an American phone; my router is a Belkin N1 with firmware version 3.01.04 and hardware F5D8631-4 v3 with WPA-TKIP, broadcast SSID on, channel 4.
Is there a way that allows me to get stable internet on my phone without a data plan?
This could be either a hardware or software issue, not quite sure. Your options are listed below
1. Root and flash to a different more updated rom
2. Flash the newest radio(not sure if it effects wifi signal strength, forgot)
3. Open up the G1 and see if any connectors are loose.
Option 3 is probably out of the question, option 1 and 2 can be done by looknig into the rom bible(sticky) in the G1 dev thread, this will give you threads with new roms, how to install them etc, as well as flashing the new radio(if you have not yet done that)
I already flashed the newest radio, since I tried to install CM6 and in that guide I was instructed to flash the newest radio. I also obviously have installed CM6RC2 which is the newest version of CM.
I did read somewhere that more people had WiFi issues with CM6RC2 or deratives; I'll try running an older version of CM.
Edit: Doesn't work; at least I can't browse when I'm connected. Doing a nandroid restore right now; I'm intending to use Froyo.
In the case that doesn't work, how hard and dangerous would it be to open up my casing and look for those wires? It's second-hand, so warranty would likely not be a problem.
Thanks for answering anyway.
Is it possible that your router is using a different band?
I don't know about Holland, but sometimes different countries allow different wireless bands.
Try changing the channel on your router to something like channel 7 or 11, something varied from the norm.
Well. I found a solution. Connecting my old sitecom wl-167 which has no wireless N support seems to give me no problems.
(Holland has different channels then America, but my G1 was surprisingly already configured for Europe)
Thanks for your help anyway!
P.S. My XDA does seem to have some problems. "No route to host" when trying to post.
Edit: It appears it isn't 100% fixed; WiFi-fixer still solves it right now but it might not be the solution.
Edit 2: Well, WiFi-Fixer is able to fix my problems all of the time for now; but ocasionally I have WiFi for 10 seconds then 10 seconds no WiFi, et cetera.

Edit 3: It isn't threatening to my WiFi anymore. Thanks everyone who tried to help me.

[Q] My IncS completely disconnects, often!

First of all, let me start of what I've tried doing, in order.
New SIM-card, factory reset, unlock + root, custom ICS (VirtousQuattro).
None of the above solved my problem, it still persists! The problem is, the phone disconnects completely from the network (no bars) and I can't manually search for a new provider due "active package transmission" or something like that, it stays disconnected for 1-3 minutes and then reconnects. It happens fairly often, like once for every 5 times I try using the phone. I haven't noticed the problem when being connected to a WiFi, so I'd assume the problem is related to an issue between the phone and the network.
Has anybody else had this problem? Any idea how to solve it?
Have you tried flashing a new Radio? I can't see how that would differ from flashing a custom ROM, but might be worth a shot?

So much for being "unlocked". Also, hey mate
Yes Naforcee, I have exactly the same problem. And it never happens while using wifi as you said.
It started immediately after I updated to Sense 3 / Android 2.3.5 from HTC.
What was the version of Android in your previous Rom? I had issues when I was on Froyo and went to Gingerbread without flashing a new radio.

Don't think it's a physical problem, I have perfect connection and it just dies out for about 2 min until it reconnects, and I can't search for network when it's down due to active packet transfer..
Could try a new SIM card. Might not fix it, but worth a shot - I've seen this posted as a fix for other people.
I used to have this problem on certain radios on the Desire Z, after flashing around a bunch of radios to try all of them. Stuck with one and it went away, so it was software for me.

Try flashing this radio http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1471861 using the ADB method. If that doesn't help I recommend doing a full wipe and reinstalling the ROM. There are a lot of different custom ROMs for IncS which can be found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136463
I personally like Niks ROM and Android Revolution HD.
Looks like rom installation issue.
My son's Inc-S having a similar problem to the OP, but more severe. A couple of weeks ago he entered airplane mode with all behaving normally, but since exiting airplane mode at the end of the flight he hasn't been able to register on the network (voice or data). We've tried:
fiddling with all the network settings
change sims (all sims work on my Inc2, none work on his IncS)
cleaning the antenna connections
reboot
factory reset
flashing new ROM (Android Revolution HD 2.3.0)
flashing new radio (3805.10.03.29_M)
So far, no satisfaction. We're still seeing no bars of reception (with an X) in the notification area, and don't have the option to manually or automatically register with any network operator (although several occasionally show up as options under "Search Networks"). We usually get the error message, "Unable to search for network while packet connection is active" when trying to select a network. Funny thing is, mobile network data has been shut off on his phone for the past month so the packet connection is definitely not active (wifi is on). Based on a network signal analyzer app, the phone is receiving the same mobile network signal as mine (-65 to -70 db) when they are side-by-side, so the problem does not appear to be in the antenna. The phone works just fine using wifi but is useless as a phone.
Any ideas about what to try next?

Probably a RIL-Radio communication issue. Recommended radio is the newer 3822.01.08.14_M radio, so maybe you should try that.

Thanks m8, all my nexus devices are having wifi issue with anything above channel 11, really odd bug can cant get 5G working at all so no AC currently.
Such a strange little bug.
I'm having problems connecting to a Channel 11 WiFi that I don't have to its configuration. This happened since the L Developer Preview and is still there after the 5.0 release.
However, it worked perfectly fine on versions 4.4.4 and older!
A bug report is here.

Thanks, I was on the point of rolling back to 4.4.4 as I wasn't able to get wifi to work again, other than from Safe mode.
However it seems to be working now that I've shifted my channel from 13 to 8
I have the same problem here, finally i'm not the only one having this issue. Fixed after changing Wireless Channel number to 11 from 13 and i'm not sure if this is also related with Wifi drain bug.

I'm also facing a problem with wifi on my Nexus 5 (D821) with Android 5.0.
I can't connect to my wifi repeater TP-LINK TL-WA850RE, the device says it's connected but shows that "!" sign.
I don't know if it has something to do with wifi channels, since the repeater works fine on another devices running Android 4.4.4 and Windows, PCs, etc.
Don't know if it's another wifi bug on Lollipop or what.

Nope, you are not the only one, I have the same problem. I actually did a clean install of Lollipop, it was terrible. Battery pretty much drained in about 8 hours with less than an hour of screen on time. I have reinstalled again (this time installed 4.4.4 and then doing an OTA). Lets see how that fares. Overnight, with minimal apps running I got from 97% to about 74% (7 hours) with wifi off, but in battery stats wifi is being shown as on.

Broken WiFi on PEAP Android M Marshmallow Nexus 6 N6

Wiped and flash modified boot from ChainFire + factory image.
PEAP WiFi does not seem to work. Always on 'Connecting' and eventually 'Authentication Error'. Credentials used were correct and is working on my N6 previously.
not sure what is the problem. Tried removing the 'pmf=1' from /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf but it is not working.
Anyone has any idea what might be the problem?
I haven't been able to connect to the 2.4 ghz network in my office since I flashed the M factory image. It uses 802.1x authentication. The 5 ghz band seems to be unaffected.
same thing happened on my N5. probably gonna revert my n6 back to L and stay there till there is a fix.
There is a google tracking thread for this issue. Please let Google know: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=188867
It looks like this issue is very similar to what happened with iOS9 beta deployments. Our office upgraded our Linux radius machines to support TLS 1.2 when that occurred and it didn't fix the issue. Then, another version of iOS 9 ended up fixing the issue. Hopefully enough people can push Google to put out a fix.
No, it's definitely a bug with the RADIUS server, see comments 29 and 37.
I wanted to bump this and not make my own thread since I found it via search.
I contacted my school's IT department to see if they can do anything about the RADIUS server, but it looks like that they'll probably not do anything about it.
Can I do anything on my end?
I've tried using hells Core with the old WiFi drivers but with no success. Not wanting to go back to Lollipop due to Marshmallow's stock battery usage is too good to give up.
Tried connecting with Stock ROM + stock kernel and hells Core.
Same issues for me.

[Q] - Nexus 6 Wifi Slow

Hello All,
Just got a nexus 6 and went ahead and installed a custom rom (Pure Nexus).
Not sure if its a ROM issue or not (Trying a different rom shortly), but my wifi is terribly slow. I put it next to my amazon fire tablet and ran a speed test multiple times.
Amazon - Avg is 15-20
Nexus is 5-7
I have read some forums that says changing the band helps or forgetting the network and readding but no luck.
Anyone else have any tips before I have to send it back for a new one?

Less than a year. ATT UVerse provided router.
No problems here, I did a 135 down and 50 up on Comcast router
Looks like something with the Rom. I put Chroma on it and now get around 20 down. I do not think its app related as I just restored all using TB.
Going to clean flash pure and try again.
It's not Pure Nexus, but something else. I'm getting 160 down, 12 up (802.11ac) on Pure Nexus. Have you updated your device's baseband to the latest?
Stock ROM, 802.11n, reaching ISP cap of 60/10 on web speed tests.

Found out it was a rogue app that caused it. Thanks for your responses. Can you point me to the latest baseband? I saw the Modem Collection thread here but the latest looks to be for the M preview back on 7/10?
Go to Google's firmware page and download the latest firmware package. Extract the files inside. I believe there will be an additional archive in the firmware package that you can extract that will contain the radio image.
I was having slow WiFi issues too. I updated the firmware on my router and switched the channel and now it flies.
That's not so easy to do when the entire 2.4GHz band is congested with connections, as it is in my area. Simply changing the channel didn't work for me, and I had to get new hardware that supported 5GHz. The gamers and video watchers in the house all appreciated it.
Other phone is same?
my problem previously was the same..i tried it with stock and aosp based roms, then i went to asked my sister to call our isp.. and the technician was able to verify the problems.. it was our internet cable.. they replaced it and it worked back to normal..
I had a similar problem, but only with the 2.4Ghz band, I live in an apartment complex and in Los Angeles so it's even worse. Luckily nobody uses the 5Ghz band so that works fine for me.
Update but found out that the issue is that my wifi slows down when my BT is on. Does not have to be connected, just have to be on...
Another Update is that I found out the combo is...
Wifi Connected + BT on (Does not have to be connected) + RetailMeNot App
I froze RTMN and now there is no slowness.
So the app is the culprit, not the combination of bluetooth and WiFi. Good thing you got it sorted.
