I'm probably not going to ask this correctly, but here goes.
I'm seriously considering switching my carrier from Verizon to ATT due to better pricing (and other reasons).
I would be bringing my Galaxy S6 (sm-G920V) over to ATT as part of the switch.
I know that I can't root my current phone with the current build because the last update "fixed" that, is but if I switch, will my build change to something else that might be "rootable"?
In other words, will my new carrier (ATT) wipe my phone and put "their" build on it?

If you bring your phone, you will remain on the same build. The only thing that will change is you'll put an at&t sim in and it won't say 'verizon' anymore.
Also, I don't think you'll get future updates for the device from Verizon anymore, and at&t cannot update the security patches or future os versions.

Android newbie looking for more in-depth rooting gotchas and unlocked s6edge on AT&T.
Hi everyone, and thanks for all the great info here. Let's assume I have my "how to root" links bookmarked and ready to go, but like a good boyscout I want to understand the gotchas/subtleties before I cliff jump. I'm also within my 15 days to exchange my s6edge AT&T for an unlocked one at Best Buy, which I plan to do today... :highfive:
(I'm technically savy, but a real newb in the world of android versions, manufacturer changes, and carrier versions and conflicts...) :crying:
1) How do I do a full ROM-level backup before beginning my adventures in rooting? Titanium Backup is no good since I need root to use it. I'd like an iPhone-style backup that I can just restore should I brick my phone.
2) After I exchange my phone I'm going to immediately airplane-mode it to prevent autoupdates (my current phone already autoupdated to unrootable OF4)... once I root how do I effectively get-latest? I'd obviously like the latest security updates, and 5.1 if I can manage it, and to maintain root.
3) AT&T doesn't have 5.1.... but if I go unlocked then can I run 5.1 on AT&T? (I've been iPhone forever -- carriers messing with you is really foreign to me). On a related note, can AT&T send some update/profile-change OTA to my phone that will conflict with updates I'm doing locally? If so any tips to avoid this?
4) An unlocked phone will perform just as well on AT&T as an AT&t phone, right?
Thanks for any info, help, and/or pointing me to resources where I can find the info, in advance. I'm technically savy, but a real newb when it comes to the gotcha-ridden ground of android and carriers.
Thanks again.

It's likely any replacement phone you get at this point will have OF4, or at least OF3 on it. It will likely be unrootable out of the box.
There is no current bootloader unlock for ATT branded devices - if you are lucky enough to get a rootable device, you can run a the two roms in the ATT section. You can run XtreStoLite v 1.5 from the regular S6 section, and maybe other 5.0.2 roms from there as well, I'm not aware of any others being tried.
In either case, we will not have 5.1.1 until after ATT releases it.

Thanks for the info -- this is where I get confused. If it's a 925F, and I put my AT&T sim in it, it isn't an "AT&T branded device", right? So the bootloader shouldn't be all locked up by AT&T? I should be able to put any GSM sim in there and run on that network... so can't I just do what I want with the hardware at that point without AT&T controlling me?

How about a simpler version...
- Can I use the "download booster" function (that AT&T removed) if I have an unlocked 925F on AT&T? Can I use 5.1 on AT&T with a non-AT&T edge?
I'm trying to work out if AT&T controls all phones or just the AT&T branded phones (925A).
Thanks.
Oh, guess I misunderstood your situation. Since you have an F model, you should be able to do whatever you want in terms of root/rom, just follow the instructions over there. I think as long as your APN is set up correctly, you should be set. As long as its working now, worst case would be full factory reflash of what you're currently running. Just remember if you root in a way that trips Knox, it's tripped forever.
I think I've seen people posting that they had download booster enabled while on ATT, but I don't recall seeing any comments about whether or not it actually worked.

I am sure this has probably been asked before but I couldn't find a clear answer.
I have the AT&T version of the Galaxy Note 4. I am thinking of changing my provider to T-Mobile (for a bunch of reasons including I have come to hate AT&T). I know the AT&T version will work on the T-Mobile network as a Smartphone with a T-Mobile SIM. But I have several questions.
1. From what I have been reading, it appears that the AT&T bootloader is locked. Is that correct? So does that mean I won't be able to put in a T-Mobile ROM or a ROM from here?
2. If I can't put in a T-Mobile ROM and unlock the bootloader, how will I be able to get future updates for the phone once I have switched to T-Mobile. I currently have the latest official AT&T OTA release (5.1.1, Baseband N910AUCU2DOI2, Kernel 3.10.40-5613584, etc.). But Samsung has promised Marshmallow for this phone.
Any thoughts anyone? Or should I just break down and buy a T-Mobile phone or a Google Nexus 6P?
Thanks

You can do updates using samsung keis... look into cricket wireless, I hated tmobile, the messed my bills up constantly and the service was iffy... if u have good service with att cricket will be the same for 35 bucks a month. Make sure you carrier unlock your phone with art BEFORE YOU CANCEL!
Sorry if this is a real noob question, but...
I have the AT&T version of the SM-T817 and just recently moved all devices over to T-Mobile. The tablet is unlocked and the new SIM card is in place and working fine.
My question: is it possible to flash the T-Mobile version of Android over this? Don't know (but can guess) whether the bootloader is locked (the tablet is not rooted). The main reason would be to get the MM update, which I am pretty sure AT&T will never actually release. My guess is that it would not be possible and if there was an LTE-supported version of a custom ROM out there, that might be the only way to go.
So...possible? And if not, is there a ROM someone could recommend which is based on MM and supports T-Mobile LTE?
I know this is an old thread, but I'm hoping someone has an answer. I'd like to know too.
So, at long last an update: I am on T-Mobile with the tablet unlocked, but still using AT&T's version of Android (now on Marshmallow). I updated the tablet while still on AT&T, and now that I am on T-Mobile the software is apparently locked at the current version because I can't connect with the AT&T upgrade servers. T-Mobile is more than willing to sell me their version of the tablet at $50 more than AT&T, but I imagine the lifespan of the S2 is pretty limited. I don't see any upside to buying the same tablet again for more money and maybe 6 months before there is a replacement...
I'm having the same questions!
I have been running with my S7 (exynos on US T-Mobile) for three years, using SupermanRom and a snapdragon-version CSC to get wifi calling enabled. I've always rooted and ROMmed my phones, but this latest endeavor with the international S7 version on a US carrier, and getting everything working (volte/wifi-calling) and also having no carrier bloat (that's why supermanrom) has really been more trouble than it's worth. I am ready to run a new note9 US-unlocked version, and try to enjoy the stock experience for a while, so I can be done with painful maintenance.
That said...
I just ordered a new SM-N960U1 ($635, in case anyone is interested: https://www.ebay.com/itm/273812623540), and when it arrives, I will be wanting to apply the latest official Android Pie update to get into the One UI + dark themes experience. I would really like to update it right the first time and avoid all the carrier software that will possibly get enabled. I will likely be transferring my T-Mobile sim from my S7 (I also have an extra unused T-Mobile sim). It could be as simple as: put in your sim and boot it up, cross your fingers and enjoy what happens.
But would anyone care to tell me what I probably should actually do, or not do, to hopefully be running the latest Android 9 update without carrier bloat?
- Thanks
I posted in wrong area hopefully this is right spot...
Hello, new to forum. I have a Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G Model number SM-G998U It's from at&t unlocked I'm using mint mobile When I try to update I get a software Update Interrupted message try again in 24 hours. I backed up and reset phone but it didn't fix this issue. Probably because I need an at&t Sim card, not sure.
Second related question is there a non at&t neutral rom that I can download and install ? So that I'm not relevant on at&t and that hopefully won't Include at&t bloatware.
I've modified a few phones before with different roms though it's been awhile.
I'm Learning the hard way, the difference between a truly unlocked phone and a carrier unlocked one.
I just can't afford a $1,200 new phone.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and thank you.
Welcome to XDA
Personally I wouldn't worry about updates. AT&T updates can update over wifi or a special AT&T update cell tower. If the AT&T firmware is intact using wifi OTA updates might work. Otherwise a Samsung Experience center at Best Buys can do it. Or you could do it yourself.
I avoid touching the firmware on my N10+'s, this one in my hand is still running happily on Pie... lol, Samsung upgrades/updates can and do break things. Once bitten, twice shy.
having the same issue with a used unlocked ATT device that I bought recently in India. Unable to update it. Is possible to load the stock ROM and remove the AT&T one from this phone? will that help?

Thank you, sounds like best option is best buy for me...
You can always download the latest unlocked firmware from https://samfw.com/ and flash it with Odin
